anheim Township is a diverse community. It is made up of a wide array of people, traditions and beliefs. But one of the things that it seems that all residents can agree on is that spring is a time of hope, change, and getting outdoors. “I’d say that everyone is more alike than they are different,” said Harry Norton, a recreation manager who’s been employed by Manheim Township for 39 years. “We’re all just people. I think everyone wants some positive aspects out of life for their Participants at the Manheim Township Recreation Department’s Community Egg Hunt seek eggs. families and opportunities to enjoy it, especially when it of recreation is to find enjoyment.” the Manheim Township Recreation With this philosophy in mind, Department (MTRD) will present its comes to recreation. It’s a club. It’s a group of individuals who share values, experiences and a vision. Members of the Conestoga River Club (CRC) believe that if they take care of the river, the Conestoga River will take care of them. “Why does the river matter? Because it brings us together,” said Todd Roy, the program director See River Club pg 2 Participants in a Conestoga River Club program learn kayak safety.

10-8 Emergency Vehicle Services Is Honoring History BY JEFF FALK
What makes all emergency vehicles special is the nature of their work. What makes this particular emergency vehicle special is the nature of its work and how it relates to history. When citizens were fleeing one of America’s darkest hours, this fire engine was speeding toward the trouble. “This is a unique piece just because of the history of it,” said Randy Fisher, who’s been the service manager at 10-8 Emergency Vehicle Services for six years. “That alone is worth its weight in gold as far as memories go. The truck has been drawing a lot of attention because it was at the (Twin) Towers on the day of the (9/11) attacks, a day we will never forget. I wanted it to be part of history. I wanted to see it recognized this year.” Located at 501B E. Main St., New Holland, 10-8 Emergency Vehicle Services is currently performing work on a very special fire engine. The local authorized dealer and service shop for all types of emergency vehicles is refurbishing, repairing and generally reconditioning a former Fire Department of New York City (FDNY) tower ladder truck that served honorably on Sept. 11, 2001, at the World Trade Center in Manhattan. “The truck is in pretty rough shape,” said Fisher. “(The owner) wants to be able to drive it. and founder of the CRC. “If we don’t take care of this planet we live on, we lose our right to do that. We have to work with our neighbors because it’s a great, big job. Why does the river matter? Because we matter.” CRC is an environmental club, it’s a recreational club, it’s a community club. The club is dedicated to taking care of, advocating for, conserving and educating about the 60-mile Conestoga River, Lancaster County’s river. CRC doesn’t maintain a brickand-mortar headquarters or clubhouse; it performs its service work in and around the water. But the club does conduct quarterly volunteer meetings at Rhoads Energy Corporation, 205 Hazel St., Lancaster, including an upcoming one from 8 a.m. to noon on Thursday, April 2. “We’re very much a grassroots organization,” said Roy. “We teach what we know. We teach how to kayak safely. We teach how to leave the Earth a better place than we found it. What we do is different. Instead of talking about it, we figure it out and do it.” An active organization, CRC engages in a number of activities throughout the year, including educational kayak excursions, celebrations of Water Week and Earth Day, outreach programs, awarding of scholarships, safety training, overnight camping trips,

said Roy. “We work with the county parks and recreation department. We also work with volunteer fire companies. We’re doing more now than ever before.” “Five years ago, no one was doing anything, and now we are,” he continued. “Now we have a plan, and we have people who have bought in. It is in its infancy, and it’s growing fast. We’re doing what I like to think of as responsive maintenance or proactive care of the river.” For additional information, go to https://conestogariverclub.org.

“It is our river. It is Lancaster County’s river,” said Roy. “The history of the Conestoga River is the history of Lancaster County. There’s a lot to learn on the Conestoga, like stream health. We teach how to live better in your own backyard.” CRC’s work is funded through government and foundation grants, but the organization also financially benefits from fundraisers and the staging of paid events. Roy founded CRC in June of 2020. “Our goal is to be on the Conestoga every day of the summer,”

fun floats and fundraisers. But one of the club’s main focuses is both large-scale cleaning and the maintenance of the Conestoga River, activities that have netted more 67 tons of trash; more than 7,000 tires; and even the odd dumpster, picnic table and trailer. “Life looks different from the water - not just the world, all of life,” said Roy, a resident of East Petersburg. “When you’re on the water, you care a lot more about what’s in it. If we can heal the water, we can heal the world.” Through its outreach efforts, CRC reaches an audience of more than 2,000 like-minded individuals mainly residents from all parts of Lancaster County - 300 of whom are members and 40 of whom are actively involved volunteers. CRC’s mission is supported by many prominent business partners and organizations, including the Pennsylvania Department of Conservation and Natural Resources, Pennsylvania Fish and Boat Commission, Lancaster County Conservation District and Lancaster Conservancy. “They are people who like what we’re doing,” said Roy. “There is so much energy around the Conestoga River Club. You don’t do this stuff for fun. You do it for intentionality. When you build that kind of rapport with people, it starts to mean something.” The Conestoga River forms near Morgantown and intersects the width of Lancaster County from northeast to southwest before depositing its waters into the Susquehanna River at Safe Harbor. While only 32.5 miles of the Conestoga are navigable, the river runs through 14 Lancaster County townships and municipalities, including West Earl Township, Upper Leacock Township, East Lampeter Township and Ephrata Township. The Conestoga River can be accessed through 14 launch facilities - offering various levels of amenities - including one at Sylvan B. Fisher Park in West Earl Township.

“They’ve done a lot of work, but they’re in a holding pattern now. If I can get some donations, we can keep it rolling.” Medeiros originally purchased the tower ladder truck for $10,000 at an auction site. “ I t h a p p e n e d f a s t,” s a i d Medeiros. “The truck was going to a scrap yard, and we saved it. Trucks like that get decommissioned and they get torn apart. I’ve been through a lot with it.” Medeiros’ plans for the 2001 Seagrave fire engine include getting it drivable so the truck can take part in a commemoration of the 25th anniversary of the 9/11 tragedy in Harrisburg in July. “That’s what we’re hoping will be our outcome,” said Medeiros. “I would say we’re about halfway to where (Medeiros) wants

“We’re a Seagrave dealer, and the owner reached out to us. He needed help, and we told him we’d help him out where we can. Renovations do get pretty labor intensive.” Paul Medeiros, a resident of North Carolina who is associated with the Virginia Fire Museum and the Old Dominion Historical Fire Society, is the owner of the Seagrave ladder truck. “(10-8 Emergency Vehicle Services is) helping out because of the meaning of the project,” said Medeiros. “They’re a humble group. To this point, 10-8’s technicians have per formed about 25 hours of work on the ladder truck, replacing windows and a thermostat and checking its engine and brakes. The tower ladder truck was first taken to 10-8 Emergency Vehicle Services for reconditioning in September of 2025. “It’s just fundamental stuff for now,” said Fisher, a resident of Lititz.

Then 4-year-olds will be afforded their opportunities, followed by 5- and 6-year-olds and 7- and 8-year-olds. Every one of the total of 10,000 multicolored eggs will contain a prize or a treat, and each hunt will include a golden egg that will provide the finder a special basket or super prize. “The best part is seeing the joy and excitement of the children as they participate,” said Norton. “We have a countdown; we turn them loose and off they go. upcoming Community Egg Hunt, which is designed to get individuals moving, appeal to everyone and bring people together. This year’s edition of the popular annual event will be conducted from 1 to 3 p.m. on Sunday, March 29, on the turf fields of the Manheim Township Athletic Complex, 2883 Weaver Road, Lancaster. Through the generosity of individual and business sponsors, the event is free to attend, and everyone is welcome. Visitors are encouraged to bring baskets for collecting eggs. “It’s a celebration of spring and renewal,” said Norton. “There’s a lot that goes on, but the big event is the egg hunt itself. We want kids to have fun and for everyone to get an egg. The vibe is very low-key with a sense of building excitement.”
“It’s open to the general community. There’s plenty of room for people, and there’s a lot for them to do,” said Norton. “Primarily, they are parents bringing their children in search of a rewarding experience. With things like this, it’s really about the enjoyment, about the fun. As parents are leaving, they often tell us how enjoyable the experience was.” “The event has become a favorite tradition for so many families,” said Matt Stopa, director of MTRD, “and we’re excited to welcome everyone back for another great afternoon together.” In 2021, it was Stopa who provided the inspiration and initiative that led to establishing the Community Egg Hunt as an event. “We had a number of events that had fallen to the wayside,” said Norton, a resident of East Hempfield Township who is planning to retire from his MTRD position on Monday, June 1. “Matt Stopa restarted and reinstituted the events. He said, ‘There are a lot of special events we could do,’ and he got things going. It was just something Matt took upon himself to expand. People came out and loved it. It’s great for the township, and it’s great for the families.” MTRD also hosts an Earth Day celebration in the spring, participates in National Night Out in August, stages a Halloween event in October, conducts a holiday open house in December and hosts a Groundhog Day event in February.
