MTHS Student Gives Back Through The March Of Dimes

okyn Valleskey, who goes by the nickname Skey, is a junior at Manheim Township High School (MTHS). Since the fall of 2020, Skey has been helping the March of Dimes, first by holding a diaper drive and now by organizing a March for Babies team.

Although Skey’s involvement with the organization, which promotes healthy starts for all mothers and babies, only began last Nov. 17, on National Preemie Day, his connection to the mission of the organization goes back to 2004, when he was born seven weeks premature. Skey came into the world via an emergency C-section, and he spent his first days in a Neonatal Intensive Care Unit (NICU) fighting to stay alive.

The son of Erin and David Valleskey of Lititz, Skey said that knowing the story of his birth has enlightened his perspective on the health of newborns. “I have always been told the story, and it has made me appreciate what the March of

Dimes and hospitals do for children in the NICU,” said Skey. Following Preemie Day 2020, Skey started considering ways he could help. “I contacted the March of Dimes to see what I could do locally,” recalled Skey, who noted that options included a diaper drive and the March for Babies.

Skey began a diaper drive around Thanksgiving 2020 by reaching out to his neighbors, family, and friends. “They were very generous with their donations,” shared Skey.

“I can’t tell you how much I appreciated it.” Skey specifically asked donors for preemie-size diapers, along with size 1 and size 2. “It’s the smaller children parents are not prepared for with an early birth because they are so unexpected (at that time),” he explained. “(The parents) probably have larger diapers stocked up but not the smaller ones.”

Next, Skey devised a plan to increase the number of diapers he collected. “I wanted to take the effort a step further to reach outside my neighborhood,” said Skey.

VisionCorps vice president and chief development officer Megan Tomsheck said that one woman who receives services shared how the virtual connection has changed her life. “(She) said that the (situation) has improved her life because it is hard for her to get out of her home, but now she can participate virtually,” recalled Tomsheck.

Ament noted that, overall, the changes have benefited clients and the organization. “The reality is that our service delivery model will be much stronger because we can do these things virtually,” he said, adding that virtual connections use time more efficiently. “We have a very creative team, and I think the opportunities are endless,” Ament said.

The hybrid programming is part virtual and part in-person. “You can’t safely teach someone how to cross the street over the computer,” noted Ament, who added that the organization was careful to protect all involved. “Our goal is to address safety with employees and the clients we serve,” he said. “For instance, a lot of our intakes are done either over the computer or the phone, but when someone needs direct attention, whether it’s our occupational therapy or mobility program, (it’s completed in person) with safety precautions taken.”

Virtual programming in a variety of formats has been utilized by VisionCorps staff as well as associated groups that receive services. “We have a lot of small groups meeting virtually,” said Ament, referring to the nearly 20 groups that discuss topics from mobility to books to service dogs. “We serve five counties,

“We shut down services for a couple weeks, but we quickly realized our services were still needed out in the community,” said Chris Ament, vice president of rehabilitation and education with VisionCorps.

Grim has worked in digital marketing in Lancaster County for nearly a decade. With a business partner, he built Sparrow Websites before recently shifting his focus from doing the design work to helping business owners develop content and opening Bootstrap Local.

“I have a passion for those businesses who have a great idea, a lot of grit and determination, but don’t have a huge budget for marketing,” Grim said.

Grim is a member of the Southern Lancaster County Chamber of Commerce and has been a guest speaker on the subject of effectively using the web to market small businesses. Additionally, he offers marketing advice with Lancaster SCORE, which provides free mentoring and education for business owners and entrepreneurs.

“I’m on my second business, but I got a SCORE mentor. She’s been fantastic,” Grim commented.

“Every business should have a SCORE mentor.”

With how important websites are, Grim advocated spending time, if not money, to develop one.

Domain names can be purchased relatively inexpensively from Google, and free or low-cost site builders like Wix, Weebly, and Webs are available. Grim recommends using SquareSpace, which has a strong search engine optimization (SEO) framework that helps websites become visible in searches.

Before starting, however, business owners should plan a good

messaging strategy by identifying their target audience and how the business’ service or product can solve customers’ problems, and they should create a mood board, which will lead to the creation of a style guide. Grim recommended visiting www.mystorybrand.com to help with that process.

Once the site is live on the web, the next thing is to update it on a regular basis through blog posts, video content, and voice recordings.

These can be uncomfortable at first, Grim noted. “For most businesses, in order to grow, (owners) need to step out a bit,” Grim shared. “For a while, I didn’t like being on camera, so I didn’t do anything, but then I discovered podcasts. I got comfortable with them, and now I do videos.”

Podcasts are a significant missed marketing opportunity, Grim said, as there are large databases of podcasts looking for guests. Even if a podcast is not local, the link will point back to the business page, which will improve rankings in search results.

Other resources for business owners include www.canva.com for creating attractive visuals and www.answerthepublic.com for discovering what questions potential customers are asking. “(Go here) if you want to create helpful (website) content but don’t know where to start,” Grim advised.

Sierra Club To Offer Grants The Sierra Club - Lancaster Group announced a request for proposals for its next round of green project grants. The deadline to apply is Wednesday, March 31. Any Lancaster County organization with a project that promotes sustainability, expands environmental awareness, and improves green infrastructure is eligible to apply for a grant. The local club also will offer its expertise and labor to support those projects that are awarded grants.

invited to purchase a ticket, which will be entered into a random drawing. There will be 30 winners in the 30 days of April. Ticket holders must be 18 years of age or older to participate.

“Each day we will pull a name,” explained Lynda Charles, president and founder of the organization.

“The name that we pull will get the designer bag of that day. Hopefully, people will buy more than one ticket.”

The giveaway replaces the organization’s previous fundraiser, a designer bag bingo. “Last year, just prior to COVID, we actually had our very first designer bag bingo at the Farm and Home Center in Lancaster,” Charles reported. “People loved it but

with COVID our fundraising events have altered, just as everyone else’s has. We decided to do this for the month of April.”

Currently, the organization has about 20 bags that it purchased brand new by designers Michael Kors, Kate Spade, Tory Burch, Coach and others. Sponsors are needed to fund the cost of the remaining bags.

“We have a lot of styles and colors,” Charles pointed out. “With our choices, we are trying to appeal to as many people as possible.”

Winners of the bags will be contacted by phone, and their names will be announced on the Help The Fight website and Facebook page.

All proceeds will benefit the charity, which provides breast cancer

patients with funds to buy groceries, pay rent and mortgages, and cover day care fees and medical bills. It also provides funds for cancer screenings.

“Wherever the need is of the patient is what we help with,” Charles said. “We have filled oil tanks and put tires on a vehicle for a onevehicle family. We have paid electric bills and bought Christmas presents by giving a family a Walmart gift card.”

Charles lost her mother to breast cancer in 1989 at the age of 49. In March of 2009, her sister was diagnosed with breast cancer. Soon after, the charity began.

“Within weeks of our sister’s diagnosis, the assistant at our office was also diagnosed,” Charles recalled.

“My husband, Dave, and I wanted to be able to help. We held a bake sale

to help with their expenses. We raised over $9,000.” She said that in addition to the bake sale, the money was raised through sponsors and a sale of T-shirts.

In 2020, Help The Fight assisted about 200 individuals. “COVID shut things down for a while. Those that needed assistance or screenings did not get them. We had a real rush when things opened,” Charles said.

“Cancer is so unkind, and it does not stop during a pandemic.”

“They were glad to help with the drive,” reported Skey, who worked with Curvin Hurst to set up a collection at the store and with Jon Hurst to film a promotional video that was posted to the store’s Instagram and Facebook accounts. The in-store drive was scheduled to run from Jan. 11 to 21, but it was extended when diaper donations exceeded expectations. When it ended, Skey was able to donate 2,269 diapers to the March of Dimes, with the

The Manheim Township girls’ and boys’ swim teams are league champions. The girls’ team competed on Feb. 5, winning for the second year in a row, and the boys won their fourth consecutive league title on Feb. 6.

Church To Host Easter Giveaway Leola United Methodist Church, 7 W. Main St., Leola, will host a free Easter giveaway event on Saturday, March 20, at 10 a.m. in place of the annual Easter egg event and the Spring Fling. This year’s drive-through event will be held rain or shine.

Every family will receive the recipe and ingredients to make a breakfast casserole, along with Easter eggs filled with candy that

they can use to have their own egg hunt at home.

Through this outreach event, the church hopes to encourage families to spend time together. The Easter Bunny will be available for pictures at the event.

Program To Examine Hotel’s History Landis Valley Village and Farm Museum will offer a free virtual presentation titled “The History of the Landis Valley House Hotel” on Tuesday, March 23, at 7 p.m.

life at the small crossroads community of Landis Valley.

After more than a decade bringing musicals and dramas to the New Holland area, Cavod Theatre has looked back to the organization’s roots to stage a junior version of one of the theater’s first productions “The Music Man.” Last set to play in December 2020 but postponed due to COVID-19 restrictions, the show, “The Music Man Jr.,” will be presented at Cavod Theatre, 641 W. Main St., New Holland, at 7 p.m. on Fridays, March 19 and 26; at 2 and 7 p.m. on Saturdays, March 20 and 27; and at 4 p.m. on Sundays, March 21 and 28.

“It’s one of the more fun junior shows,” said director Alex Weaver, who grappled with the challenges of rehearsing under COVID-19 restrictions. Weaver divided the 36-member cast into “family groupings,” and taught the show’s lovebirds, Harold Hill, played by Derrick Lambert, and Marian Paroo, played by Soren Lefever, how to portray emotion without getting too close or looking directly at each other while singing.

The plot of the musical revolves around Hill, a con man who pretends to be a band leader. He sells musical instruments and band uniforms to the residents of River City, Iowa, while promising to train the members of the new band. The townspeople, with the exception of librarian and piano teacher Paroo, fall for Hill’s tricks. Although Paroo sees the truth, after witnessing Hill helping her younger brother, Winthrop, played by Brandt Esh, overcome his lisp, Paroo begins to fall for the trickster.

“The Music Man” has been a staple of musical theater since it debuted on Broadway in 1957. The show is known for toe-tappers such as “76 Trombones” and “Ya Got Trouble,” along with the softer melodies of “‘Til There Was You,” and “Goodnight, My Someone.”

Because “The Music Man” is such a popular show, Weaver is planning to deliver the classic tale but still offer audiences a bit of a fresh take by encouraging his actors, ages 9 to 17, to look into the depth of their characters. “I am a big fan of character development,” said Weaver. “I am trying to help them understand that every line in the script is in there for a reason to help them … understand their character a little better.”

Weaver noted that it has been satisfying to see students take a break from what is happening in the world when they come to rehearsals. “(I enjoy) seeing the kids come in here and have fun for three or four hours and forget about everything else in a safe environment putting on a show,” he said.

After having to reschedule, the director is especially looking forward to sharing the hard work of the cast with audiences. “I really hope audiences can see there is still fun to be had in bad times,” he said, adding that he also hopes the theme of authenticity will shine through. “The message behind the show is being able to find your true self,” he explained. “You don’t have to lie or be fake. It’s OK to be who you are.”

Esbenshade said that the program is implemented in a number of phases, beginning with an assessment and orientation. “We go over goals and how we can best help (a woman),” explained Esbenshade. “We tailor the curriculum to each individual.” The program includes a focus on trauma and drug and alcohol addiction, along with life skills training. During later phases of the program, the resident will work or attend school.

“We think it’s important for people to know about (human) trafficking and to know it happens right here in Lancaster County,” said Janelle Esbenshade, director of development with North Star Initiative, “with the hope that once they understand … if they come in contact with (someone who is being trafficked), they will be educated enough to know what to do.”

To help make community members aware of the signs of trafficking, North Star Initiative will hold an awareness event, Welcome to the Battle, at Petra Church, 565 Airport Road, New Holland, on Friday, March 19. The event, which will feature a panel discussion, will begin at 6 p.m.

Tickets, which are limited, may be purchased up until the day of the event. Proceeds raised from the event will help provide trauma therapy for the survivors at The Harbor.

Panelists who are lined up to take part are Heather Castellino, Pennsylvania deputy attorney general; Derek Thompson, founder of Abolition Men; Brad Ortenzi, retired police officer and eastern USA regional director of Zoe International; and Liz Nolan, education specialist and licensed professional counselor for North Star Initiative. A surprise guest will also join the

discussion. The event will include desserts provided by Zig’s Bakery and Shady Maple. Attendees will be asked to follow Petra’s COVID-19 guidelines, including wearing masks.

According to Esbenshade, the forum is designed to educate by posing questions to the panel about human trafficking, such as, “What is (human) trafficking?” “Who are the victims of this crime?” and “What can you do to get involved?” Esbenshade noted that runaways and homeless people are the main two groups of people who are preyed upon by traffickers. Trafficking that occurs in Lancaster County is often related to the network of highways that converge here. “We are a pass-through state,” explained Esbenshade, who noted that roads from New York, New Jersey, and Philadelphia come through Lancaster, York, and Harrisburg to Baltimore and Washington, D.C. North Star operates The Harbor, a place where survivors of trafficking can experience physical, psychological, emotional, and spiritual care and support in a Christ-centered program.

“The Harbor focuses on restoration and re-entry, coordinating the services needed to address physical, mental, legal, educational, and other issues relating to the time spent in the hands of traffickers,” said Esbenshade. With a staff of 15, The Harbor

This donation is double the automaker’s April 2020 donation, in which it helped provide 50 million meals to the hunger-relief organization.

Locally, the Central Pennsylvania Food Bank will benefit from the donation.

The Central Pennsylvania Food Bank, a member of Feeding America, has reported that demand for food assistance is at record high levels. Thousands of families in central Pennsylvania are experiencing food insecurity for the first time as a result of the pandemic. Of those individuals, one-third are children.
