As manager, Rick Kane makes Township run smoothly

It’s a thankless position, one performed behind the scenes, with little or no fanfare. It’s a difficult job that requires organizational skills and prioritizing, as well as a certain level of tact.

One doesn’t have to be a native to be the manager of Manheim Township. But it sure does help.

Meet Rick Kane. While it’s his experience and expertise that may

Adult Sports League takes off

“We are always adding programs and creating opportunities,” said Risa Paskoff, executive director of Aaron’s Acres. During the winter, the organization added the Aaron’s Acres Adult Sports League to its offerings for adults with disabilities. The league joined existing sports programs such as the Chuckie Magee Flag Football League, which began in the fall of 2022. Paskoff pointed out that Challenger Little League of Lancaster County is available in the spring. Challenger has given individuals with special needs a chance to play baseball each year for nearly three decades.

After the flag football program attracted 20 members who participated in regular games at the Manheim Brethren in Christ Church on Saturdays from August through early November, Aaron’s Acres organizers wanted to offer a winter program, dubbed Aaron’s Acres Adult Sports League. “We started it at the beginning of February,” said Paskoff, who noted the program

has been held each Saturday from 10 a.m. to noon at the Lancaster Brethren in Christ Church on Fruitville Pike, with the last installment set for March 18. “We opened it to adults ages 21 to 40 as with the flag football,” explained Paskoff. “We didn’t know if they would like kickball or soccer or floor hockey, so we did two weeks of each.” The rotation began with kickball, which some of the participants had never played before. Next, the program featured soccer and is finishing with floor hockey. Halfway through each session, the group took a break for a snack. More than 20 participants and four volunteers took part. “They loved kickball. It was so much fun,” said Paskoff, who noted that in the future, she hopes to have more volunteers at the sessions.

Because of the short duration and number of volunteers, parents of participants are required to remain at the venue. “It gives the parents time to mingle and (network),” said Paskoff, who noted one participant’s mother had moved to the state only recently and was able to learn about resources from other

parents. The participant was happy to take part in the activity. “He’s very social, and he was so excited to be with other people,” said Paskoff.

Because of the success of the flag football league and the winter sports programming, Paskoff said, Aaron’s Acres plans to hold the programs again. “It’s just continuing the mission of providing meaningful programs to people with disabilities and expanding the ages,” she said.

“It’s another opportunity for individuals with disabilities to be together for social time and also be physically active, and it gives families times to connect.”

Aaron’s Acres holds a six-week summer program to serve about 200 children with disabilities. In the summer of 2022, the camp moved to New Holland, and Paskoff said the organization plans to hold camp in the New Holland Community Memorial Park again in 2023. Paskoff noted the organization continues to look for an existing building to renovate to meet its needs.

The historic town of Lititz has always been associated with Wilbur Chocolate, or for at least as long as anyone can remember. The reminders are everywhere, the signs are all around, and with a little imagination, visitors can still make out the aroma of chocolate being made there.

In 2016, the production of Wilbur Chocolate at its longtime plant on North Broad Street was ceased, ending the site’s celebrated 125-year run of creating the confectionery.

make him qualified for the job of manager, it’s his love for Manheim Township that motivates him to do it well.

“I’ve lived in Manheim Township for almost my entire life,” said Kane, who’s held the position of township manager for a year, after being employed as the chief of the fire company. “I can assure you that I came into this position with a different perspective. I know the history. This is my hometown. I’m vested. Now I’m raising my family here.”

Kane’s job as township manager is perhaps best characterized as a little bit of everything, all the time. Kane is the guy who can get you anything you want or knows who can.

With 44,000 residents in its 24 square miles, Manheim Township is the only township in Lancaster County designated as a first-class township - that is, one that has a population density of 300 or more residents per square mile. Of the nearly 2,400 municipalities in Pennsylvania, there exist only 92 first-class townships.

Present owner Cargill Inc. established the Wilbur Chocolate outlet store across the street at 45 N. Broad St. and opened a Wilbur plant on Lincoln Avenue in Lititz, where white chocolate is currently manufactured.

In addition to the sale of a variety of retail items, the outlet store creates some in-house delicacies that incorporate the use of Wilbur Chocolate. A lot of that chocolate, which has stayed true to the original Wilbur recipe, is being produced in Mount Joy, in Hazleton and at the Lincoln Avenue facility.

Erica Dixon, the manager of the Wilbur Chocolate store, said she is routinely asked if Wilbur Chocolate is still produced in Lititz.

“I’ll explain to them about the facility on Lincoln Avenue and the white chocolate,” said Dixon. “Here (at the store), we create a variety of chocolate, kitchen-made items, but we don’t make the chocolate here.”

In many ways, the Wilbur outlet store connects Lititz visitors to the town’s chocolate past.

In the early 1900s, commercial success expanded the production of Wilbur Chocolate from Philadelphia to Lititz. Before Cargill purchased Wilbur in 1992, chocolate was produced in Lititz for the better part of the 20th century.

“I think there’s a strong association with Lititz and Wilbur Chocolate,” said Dixon. “When people think of Lititz, they think of Wilbur

Chocolate, and vice versa. They kind of coincide with each other.”

Dixon said the Wilbur Chocolate outlet store welcomes thousands of visitors each year, some of whom are local and some of whom are from out of town. They are drawn by curiosity, the Wilbur legacy and, of course, their love of chocolate.

“ Wilbur Chocolate is a brand that’s been around for many years,” said Dixon. “People want to see the history. We have a lot of items made at the facility for sale at the store. People can also learn a little about history when they’re here. Our claim to fame, our signature item, is Wilbur Buds.”

“ We’re very proud of being a part of the Lititz community,” concluded Dixon. “We want to continue the tradition of serving the area. We want to continue to uphold the Wilbur legacy.”

“For me, what makes the job interesting is the variety,” said Kane. “We’re so big and we’re so busy, but big doesn’t make us better. Financially, we’re pretty well off. We have to be good at using all the tools in the toolbox to provide the services we do. Some of it is prioritizing and thinking what’s important to the citizens. We have to balance the services we provide with the budget.”

Kane directly or indirectly oversees Manheim Township’s 400-member workforce of full-time, part-time and seasonal employees.

Manheim Township operates or maintains a police force, a fire department, a zoning department, a planning department, a public works department, a library, two

pools and a golf course.

As the township manager, Kane also provides support and acts as the liaison between the public and the Manheim Township Board of Commissioners.

“Not a day goes by that I’m not on the phone or meeting in person with one of the commissioners,” said Kane. “I would equate my job to being like the operations director of a corporation. I’m responsible for the day-to-day operations in the township, and our product is service. The vast majority of Manheim Township residents who walk into this building for a service really don’t give it a thought.

W hen you put all the pieces together, it ends up with the township manager.”

Kane began his work in the township at the age of 16 as a volunteer with the Manheim Township ambulance. For 37 years, he has provided some sort of service to the township, as either a paid employee or a volunteer.

“ We have such a diversity here and all these people need services,” said Kane. “The fact is our residents enjoy a level of services you don’t get in a lot of places. We have to be proactive to provide that level of services. We believe we’re providing those services well, but we’re going to need more resources if we’re going to continue providing the services we are now.”

We are fortunate to live in an area that has long been regarded as the “Garden Spot of America.” Generational farming is a part of the Lancaster County culture. In fact, we lead the nation in young farmers. According to the most recent Economic Impact study by the Pennsylvania Department of Agriculture, 14% of farms in Pennsylvania had a young producer (defined as someone age 35 or younger) operating as the primary farmer. At last count, Lancaster County had 2,400 young producers, twice as much as the second-ranked county in the nation, LaGrange County, Ind. In addition, Lancaster County leads the nation in farmland preservation, with more than 113,000 acres preserved. As promising as that sounds for the future, we’re still losing more than 1,200 acres of Lancaster County farmland each year to development, according to the Lancaster Farmland Trust (LFT), a nonprofit organization with the mission of preserving agriculture and stewarding the land in Lancaster County. For more information on LFT, visit https://lancasterfarmland trust.org.

Farming can be a backbreaking, often undervalued vocation that doesn’t stop at 5 p.m. on Friday. Like we often do with first responders and the military, thank a farmer for his or her service to our community. Look at labels and buy locally. See where your milk, produce, and meat are coming from. When you shop at local supermarkets, if you don’t see local produce in season, ask why the store isn’t providing locally sourced foods. Encourage the store to offer local produce so shoppers can easily support local farmers.

The Lancaster County landscape is dotted with roadside produce stands when crops are in season. Most of these stands and farmers markets won’t open until later in the spring or summer. Below is a list of some of the many locations where you can get fresh local produce, meats, and cheeses.

Farmers and growers face a significant threat in the years to come as industrial agriculture operations continue to expand. According to the National Resources Defense Council, industrial agriculture is the large-scale, intensive production of crops and animals. Such operations make it more difficult for small farmers and growers to turn a profit, and they often involve the use of chemical fertilizers and pesticides. The use of such products

poses an additional threat to small farmers and growers, as the Union of Concerned Scientists notes that the heavy application of fertilizers and pesticides accelerates soil erosion and increases pest problems. Consumers concerned by the effects of industrial agriculture on the environment and on small farmers’ and growers’ ability to earn a good living can support efforts such as regenerative farming and organic farms.

ON-SITE PUBLIC REAL ESTATE AUCTION

WEDNESDAY,

Michael P. McMahon was a true Renaissance man. A 1993 graduate of Lancaster Catholic High School, he was a registered nurse, a flight attendant and a school bus driver. Each job offered Michael a chance to help people, something he truly believed in. Although he gave his all to everything he did, he was most passionate about his work as an emergency medical technician (EMT).

When Michael passed away from colon cancer in October 2021, his family turned its grief into an opportunity to help others. The Michael P. McMahon Scholarship for Emergency Medical Services (EMS) was created to help any resident of Lancaster County who wishes to pursue an EMT, Advanced EMT or Paramedic Certification.

Michael was the oldest of four children and the son of Mike and Joanne McMahon. “He was loving, and he was loved by his family and friends,” Mike stated.

Added Joanne, “Michael’s life was so varied. You couldn’t put him in a box. If he was interested in something, he’d do it. … They say it’s the dash

between the years on your gravestone that matters. Michael made the most of that dash.”

Joanne noted that her freespirited son loved to try new things, but one career path made all the difference. “Being an EMT and eventually a paramedic changed his life,” she shared. “He grew as a person. It made him who he was.”

When Joanne sat down to write Michael’s obituary, and she got to the part about giving flowers, she had another idea. “She said, ‘Let’s start a scholarship in his name,’” recalled Mike, noting that they asked family members and friends to contribute.

“Our goal is to find as many people to help as we can,” said Joe McMahon, Michael’s brother. “We want to pay for as many as we can and give people the opportunity to do this as a career, to help people to do something every day that they can be proud of.”

Noted Mike, “This is a full scholarship, based on capability and need.” It will cover tuition up to $7,500.

To help develop the scholarship, the McMahon family reached out to the Lancaster County EMS Council, a nonprofit organization made up

New Police Officer Sworn In

The Manheim Township Board of Commissioners swore in Officer Nicholas Nachurski at the board’s meeting on Jan. 23. With him to pin his badge were his 7-year-old daughter, Chloe, and his girlfriend, Megan.

Nachurski came to the

Manheim Township Police Department from the Reading Police Academy. He graduated from the academy on Dec. 23, 2022, and started work on Jan. 1, 2023.

He has also been a professional drummer and worked as a security guard. He resides in Berks County.

of representatives from all of the EMS agencies serving Lancaster County. The initial scholarship was open to students and alumni at Lancaster Catholic High School, but a second round is being offered countywide.

The scholarship is open to both current students and adults. “Michael was kind of a late bloomer, so the ideal candidate could be someone who has stayed home with their kids and now wants to get back into the workforce,” said Michael’s sister Mary Kate Walsh. “Or it could be someone who wants to change careers and needs financial

support to do that.”

The scholarship is meant to be a stepping stone into a career that helps people, said Michael’s sister Colleen Murphy, who added, “We need more helpers in the world like my brother.”

The application process for the scholarship will run from Saturday, April 1, through Friday, June 30. Scholarship winners will be notified by Monday, July 31. For more information, to obtain a scholarship application or to make a donation to the scholarship fund, contact Joe McMahon at joe@joemcmahonlaw.com.

Nursing scholarships available

To support students just beginning their pursuit of a nursing career, Luthercare will offer nursing scholarships to local high school seniors this year. The scholarships are open to students enrolled in public school, private school, nonpublic school, or homeschooling programs in Lancaster and Lebanon counties. It is for those who plan to pursue a nursing degree.

Two $5,000 scholarships and five $1,000 scholarships will be awarded. Applicants are required to complete an application and write an essay describing why they should receive the scholarship and why they are interested in the field of nursing. Applicants must also submit two letters of recommendation: one from

a teacher, coach, mentor, or other similar person, and one from a community member. The scholarship application can be obtained by visiting www.luthercare.org and clicking on News. Applications will be accepted through Monday, April 3. Winners will be notified on Tuesday, April 18, and invited to attend an awards ceremony on Wednesday, May 10, at Luther Acres in Lititz.

All materials should be submitted to the Luthercare Nursing Scholarship Committee via email at hr@luthercare.org or by mail; the mailing address is available at the aforementioned website. For details, contact Tammy Schucker at 717-626-1171, ext. 1552, or tschucker@luthercare.org.

Make-A-Wish clown classes planned

Clown classes for individuals wishing to become MakeA-Wish clowns will be offered on Saturdays, March 25, April 8, April 22 and May 6. Groups of families, co-workers, church members, and

others are welcome. There is no charge for the class, but there will be a cost for the makeup kits.
