Hunting eggs with gusto in Manheim Township

Come for the eggs and fun for the children. Stay for the popcorn and adult fellowship.

Hey, the Manheim Township Parks and Recreation Department (MTPR) may just be on to something here.

The department’s next event is designed to get folks out and bring people together.

“It’s about community,” said MTPR’s director, Matt Stopa. “Physical activity has its place.

But it’s almost like, ‘Let’s do something more fun geared around the community.’ It’s that community atmosphere.”

“I’ve worked with people who have lived here their whole lives,” Stopa added. “And I’ve worked with people who have just moved

here. I think that really characterizes the Manheim Township community. This can bring people together and provide opportunities for meeting new people.

Township Athletic Complex, 2883 Weaver Road, Lancaster. The event is free, and everyone is welcome, but participants are encouraged to bring their own egg baskets.

An act of creation, art can be pleasing to the eye, the ear, the touch. Art can also create value, worth and appreciation.

Friendship Heart Gallery and Studio’s annual art benefit auction is a great many things to a great many people. But at its most basic level, the auction is about individuality, equality and value.

“Art is a really great way for Heart artists to express themselves,” said Leah Scheib, Friendship Heart Gallery’s manager. “Our mission is to celebrate their personalities, just get across to everyone that what they do is important. It gives all of our artists a voice, creatively, to dive into their most inner feelings and expressions.”

This year’s edition of Friendship Heart Gallery and Studio’s

art benefit auction, the 21st, has been dubbed “Soaring Beyond Boundaries.” It will take place on Thursday, March 21, at Grace Church, 501 W. Lincoln Ave., Lititz. The silent auction

MTPR will conduct the fourth edition of its annual Community Egg Hunt on Saturday, March 23, from 1 to 3 p.m. on the turf fields of the Manheim

Last year, more than 1,000 kids, parents and family members attended the Community Egg Hunt. Most of them were residents of Manheim Township, but some were from outside the immediate community.

“It’s very similar to some of the other events we do,” said Stopa. “The ultimate goal is to create positive memories for families, to just give everyone a fun experience. We want to reach as many people as we can and make it as big as we can.”

The event will be broken down

The Feathered Sanctuary, located at 562 Beechdale Road, Bird-in-Hand, is one of only a few exotic bird rescues in Pennsylvania. The relationship that exists between domesticated birds and people strikes at the heart of what the Feathered Sanctuary does.

“These birds are exotic,” said Sharon Shaub, the Feathered

Sanctuary’s manager. “Anybody can have a dog. Not everyone can have a bird. Dogs like everybody. A bird has to like you and you have to know how to take care of a bird. If they do, they’ll love you.”

Feathered Sanctuary is currently home to 60 exotic birds - parakeets, parrots, cockatoos, macaws and cockatiels. Many of them have been surrendered to the Feathered Sanctuary,

Church sets piano and organ concert

Highland Presbyterian Church, 500 E. Roseville Road, Lancaster, will host another program in the Dorothy Rose Smith Concert Series on Wednesday, March 13, at 7 p.m.

Titled “Pipes and Keys,” this concert will feature pianist Paul Thorlakson and pianist and organist Jonathen Lefever. The program

will include works by Saint-Saëns, Mozart, Gounod, Barber, and Schumann, performed on piano and organ, solo piano, solo organ, and two pianos. The two-piano selections will be played on two Steinway concert grand pianos. Admission is free, and no tickets are required.

ages 5 and 6, and ages 7 and 8. A total of 7,500 eggs - 1,000 more than last year - containing toys, stickers, candy and three to five golden tickets per age group will be the objects of desire.

“Some 2,000 eggs will be eaten up in a minute,” said Stopa of the

hunt’s figurative feeding frenzy. “It goes quick. We want to spread it out more so more kids can get more eggs. We want every kid to get as many eggs as they can. We’re trying to maximize that volume.”

Enhancing the egg hunt experience will be popcorn, crafts,

themed games, music and face painting. There will also be photo opportunities with the holiday mascot Mr. Bunny.

“It’s outside and spring’s just around the corner,” said Stopa. “You have blooming flowers and there’s a DJ playing. It’s definitely this fun, outside event. It’s kind of a lead-in to the spring and summer seasons.”

“We’ve worked on this,” he continued. “Every event we do we try to make better. We have meetings before, and we have meetings after. We’re always trying to finetune it.”

The Manheim Township Parks and Recreation Department sponsors a handful of community events throughout the year, including a

Halloween carnival, a holiday open house, a summer outdoor movie night, a Groundhog Day celebration, the Landis Woods art show and a native wildlife plant festival.

and most are waiting to be adopted by their forever homes.

“When the phone rings, we never know what kinds of friends we’re getting, where they’re from or what their circumstances are,” said Shaub. “Most of the time, people will call us and want to relinquish their birds. Sometimes owners go into the hospital and have no one to take care of them. Birds outlive their owners. Birds live a long time.”

“We’re all volunteers and we just love the birds,” added Shaub. “It’s not their fault they don’t have a home. We’ve made them our pets and our responsibility.”

For visitors, the atmosphere at the Feathered Sanctuary can be a little overwhelming at first. Coming from all directions, there’s energy and sounds and sights that can only be compared to a menagerie.

“It’s just fun,” said Shaub of the rescue’s indoor environment. “We let them out (of their cages) and everyone gets to come at you. It’s fun watching them. It’s always interesting. They know what they’re saying. They’re not just imitating. They’re big and they’re beautiful.”

The Feathered Sanctuary is certainly a unique nonprofit. But like most nonprofits, it has a need for funds and volunteers.

“There are no other rescues around,” said Shaub. “I get calls from Connecticut and Baltimore, and the only (other) two I know of are in New Jersey. That’s why we stay open; we want to help (the birds). Birds are expensive. They have to have a good cage and good food. If you don’t feed them good food, you’re not going to have a healthy bird.”

Feathered Sanctuary was started by Pequea resident Lynne Rothweiler in the late 1990s. Before moving to its current location in December of 2023, the rescue experienced consistent growth and placed dozens of rescued birds in new homes.

“If you were interested in adopting a bird, you’d come here and look around,” said Shaub.

“Hopefully one of the birds would pick you. You can’t make the birds like you. That’s their prerogative. We want them to know the person when they go home with them. There are some people birds just love. They’re smart. They’re very smart.”

“Every animal should be rescued,” Shaub continued. “So many need homes now. There are too many animals out there. Exotic birds are good pets.”

The basics of regenerative agriculture

Climate change poses a threat to various industries, not the least of which is the agricultural sector. In the years to come, farmers and agricultural organizations will need to continue to adapt and adjust, and one of the changes many farmers may consider, if they haven’t already, is a pivot to regenerative agriculture practices. Regenerative agriculture could have a profound impact on the world over the next half-century, so now may be a good time to gain an understanding of the practice.

What is regenerative agriculture?

Regenerative agriculture is a production system that focuses on reducing water usage and other inputs as part of a larger attempt to prevent land degradation and deforestation. According to the organization Green America, regenerative agriculture is designed to harness the power of

photosynthesis in plants to sequester carbon in the soil. The ability to do that can improve soil health, crop yields, water resilience, and nutrient density.

Why should people be interested in regenerative agriculture?

Green America notes that regenerative agriculture draws down atmospheric carbon dioxide. That’s a significant benefit, as Climate.gov, which is a product of various departments within the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA), reports that adding more carbon dioxide to the environment is causing global temperatures to rise. In fact, observations from the NOAA Global Monitoring Laboratory in 2021 revealed that carbon dioxide alone was responsible for about two-thirds of the total heating influence of all human-produced greenhouse gases.

Another reason to

consider regenerative agriculture is its connection to topsoil. Green America reports that the world is on the cusp of running out of topsoil, which is vital to growing food. Regenerative agriculture rebuilds topsoil, which can lead to greater food security across the globe.

What are some regenerative agriculture practices?

Regenerative agriculture practices include the use of cover crops, a reduction in tilling, crop rotation, and spreading compost. Green America notes that regenerative agriculture practitioners also avoid the use of synthetic fertilizers, pesticides, herbicides, and factory farming.

As the climate shift continues to challenge the agricultural sector, regenerative agriculture could help farmers and the larger industry to mitigate this problem.

Help wanted: Labor shortages in agriculture

The agricultural workforce is shrinking and has been for some time. The American Farm Bureau Federation (AFBF) estimates that roughly 2.4 million farm jobs need to be filled annually, but there has been a drastic decline in the number of workers each year.

The AFBF notes that more than 73% of farm workers are immigrants from South America and Mexico. The United States’ H-2A visa program, which allows employers who meet specific requirements to bring in foreign laborers for temporary work, has increased the number of accepted applications for immigrants to 250,000, but this number is still just a drop in the bucket in terms of labor needs.

As more farm operators reach retirement age, fewer young farmers are replacing them, possibly because a career in this sector isn’t always easy or lucrative.

According to the U.S. Department of Agriculture,

for every dollar spent on food, a farmer receives only 7.6 cents. Farmers were predicted to lose 9.7% of total net income in 2021. Working in agriculture can also mean volatile pricing, high real estate and land costs, steep initial machinery investment costs, and physically demanding tasks.

Many people with knowledge of the industry indicate that sweeping changes are warranted.

Ellen Poeschl, the project director for the National Association of Agricultural Educators’ Teach Ag campaign, said that a lack of agricultural education is contributing to the worker shortage. Increasing availability of agriculture education courses across the country could build interest in the industry. Connecting students to internships or mentors may help, too.

Another option is to rally for greater economic opportunities in agriculture. Those working in the industry may look for innovative ways to make the

economic benefits more competitive to other industries, and improve working conditions and job flexibility. Agricultural industries currently average only 60% of what other industries offer in salaries. Farm wages have been rising due to the H-2A program, which requires farm worker pay to be higher than the state and federal minimum wage. Further change may be possible, but this may have to come at the federal level or be sparked by efforts on the part of agricultural advocacy groups.

Additional strategies farm operators may employ to combat shortages include integrating technology to reduce labor burdens, switching to crops that require fewer laborers, leasing portions of land to make extra money, and employing temporary guest workers.

Worker shortages continue to be problematic for the agricultural industry, but a variety of tactics may be available to address the issue.

The future of agriculture

The agricultural industry is continually evolving. In addition to an increase in food demand due to a growing global population, factors leading to change include consumer habits, technology, and policies. In the future, the agricultural sector may look different in several ways.

Bigger digital footprint

Social media has transformed many industries, and it can do the same for agriculture. Farming supply chains can communicate with one another by getting feedback from customers in real time through social media. However, agricultural operations may have to devote extra time to manage social media presence, especially since misinformation is so widespread on social media.

Apart from social media,

local farmers may increase their efforts to utilize mobile apps and directto-consumer purchasing options. The global pandemic helped businesses reimagine takeout and curbside shopping. Local farms may consider marketing to the home-shopping community, providing ways to deliver produce, fresh meat and poultry, and other items direct to customers’ homes.

Regenerative agriculture

The future may feature a significant shift in the way farms source their ingredients. Farmers may try regenerative agriculture, which describes farming and grazing practices that may help reverse climate change by rebuilding soil organic matter and restoring degraded soil biodiversity.

Technological advancement

Technology will likely continue to play important and growing roles in farming operations. New agricultural technologies can collect data on soil and plant health and produce results in real time. Precision farming technology can be developed to deliver integrated solutions no matter the size of the operation.

Shift in what products are grown

Certain crops are being utilized in new and innovative ways, and they’re only the start as consumers have expanded their views on plant-based foods and products.

While there’s no way to see into the future, individuals can likely expect changes in the agricultural sector in the decades ahead.

will begin at 6 p.m., and Friendship Heart Gallery and Studio will present a program featuring its artists at 7 p.m.

Individuals who cannot attend but would like to bid on the works of art can do so online at www .friendshipart.net/artauction.

Light refreshments will be served, and a giveaway drawing will be conducted. Everyone is welcome to attend, but tickets are required and preregistration at the previously mentioned website is encouraged.

“It’s a really fun night to showcase our abilities and talents,” said Scheib. “We’d like everyone to come out and support local arts.”

Friendship Heart Gallery and Studio is a day program designed to assist individuals with intellectual disabilities and autism. During the auction, 31 works - mostly paintings, but also some photographs - by program participants, known as Heart artists, will be made available for bids.

“Those who attend can meet the artists, talk to them and get to know them,” said Scheib. “The event has evolved into something

special for these artists. It’s an opportunity for them to come together and engage with the public. That’s incredibly important for them. We try to get our artists into the community, to have interactions. This is one of the greatest events for that because it’s about our studio and them.”

Over 100 individuals, family, friends and members of the community are expected to attend the art benefit auction, and Friendship Heart Gallery and Studio is hoping to raise $30,000. All proceeds from the event will go toward supporting the gallery and studio and its functions, including utility carts, chairs, standing desks, additional furniture, art supplies, frames, ink and paper.

“We do other fundraisers, but this is the biggest one of the year for the gallery,” said Scheib. “It’s very important for us.”

Friendship Heart Gallery operates two studios, one at 1159 E. Oregon Road, Lititz, and the other at 118 N. Water St., Suite 101, Lancaster. There are currently 66 Heart artists enrolled in Friendship Heart
