2020 GALA

Mark and Beth Wagner have been directing plays at Manheim Township High School (MTHS) for more than 30 years. For their last Manheim Township Performing Arts (MTPA) production, the pair has chosen to stage “Mamma Mia!” The show is based on music of the 1970s Swedish pop group ABBA and written by playwright Catherine Johnson.

MTPA plans to present the international hit musical in the auditorium at Manheim Township High School (MTHS), 115 Blue Streak Blvd., Lancaster, on Thursday, Friday, and Saturday, March 19, 20, and 21, at 7:30 p.m.

The play is set on a small Greek island and tells the story of Sophie, played by Annalise Prentiss, a bride-tobe who is trying to find her real father

so he can walk her down the aisle when she marries Sky, played by Ayush Iyer.

Sophie’s mother, Donna, played by Yasmin Nicholas, who was once the lead singer of the 1970s group Donna and the Dynamos, refuses to discuss the past, but Sophie reads her mother’s old diaries and learns of three men who could be her father. Sophie invites the men, Sam, played by Mason Norris; Bill, played by Josh Deliver; and Harry, played by Mitchell Callais, to her wedding. The story also includes Donna’s two lifetime friends and fellow members of Donna and the Dynamos. They are Tanya, played by Alexa Day, and Rosie, played by Dayanna Blanco.

Bridge Of Hope Opens Lancaster Office Neighboring Volunteers Sought To Help Fight Homelessness

In August of 2019, Bridge of Hope Lancaster and Chester Counties and Good Samaritan Services parted ways.

Triple Play - GOTR Slates Multiple Activities

Bridge of Hope, a national organization that fights homelessness through community support efforts, made the decision to operate Bridge of Hope programs separately in both Lancaster and Chester counties. In Lancaster County, Audrey Metzler became the county director, moving into the organization’s new offices at 255 Butler Ave., Suite 205, Lancaster, in December.

post in 2008 and returning to the organization and to Lancaster in late 2019. In her new role, she will handle some case management and train and coordinate local volunteer groups through churches and other faith groups, such as Bible studies and small groups.

“I will be recruiting and training neighboring volunteers from local churches and matching them up with families (facing homelessness),” said Metzler, who explained that groups help to support families who are on the brink of homelessness. She shared that responsibilities are often divided with designated positions, including a group coordinator, members who help find housing, a child care coordinator, and a transportation coordinator.

The Wagners chose the show after students expressed interest in performing it and because they felt it was a good fit for the students currently taking part in MTPA, but the musical is not without challenges. “Perhaps the biggest (challenges) are the sheer volume of music and the technical demands of the music,” said Mark. “Every song has backstage vocals, so whenever a cast member is not onstage, they are singing backup vocals in a designated area backstage, (which) is quite tricky to pull off as they must also coordinate costume changes and their characters’ scenes.”

have taken easily to the material. “The students are loving the contemporary feel of the show, the dancing, the vocals, really all of it,” said Mark. “The music is familiar to them and to their parents. ABBA spans many generations.”

For their final show, the Wagners hope to give audiences uplifting entertainment that resonates after they leave the theater. “The show is very lighthearted, and the plot is not complicated,” said Beth. “It communicates the importance of love, laughter, family, and friends.”

Mark agreed. “It is a feel-good show,” he said. “We hope the audience leaves smiling and feeling happy and humming the tunes.”

groups are referred to as neighborhoods of support. “There’s a case manager and six to 10 volunteers from a neighboring church,” said Yoder, who noted that the volunteer group members are encouraged to get to know the head of the family they will work with, often the mother, and then spend time with the family engaging in fun group activities. Bridge of Hope will provide case management and connections to area resources the family may need.

Yoder noted that many volunteers are not aware of how valuable their help can be. “We are really emphasizing that one of the gifts group members bring the families facing homelessness is social capital that they might not even know they have,” she said, explaining that social capital refers to connections within the community that can help meet the family’s

specific needs. “Oftentimes neighboring volunteers don’t realize the assets they have access to because of who they know (in the area),” she noted.

Both Metzler and Yoder told of instances when neighboring volunteers connected with dentists, mechanics, or others to provide services a family needed at little or no cost.

One goal of Bridge of Hope is to move a family into housing within two months of entering the program. To reach that milestone, the organization partners with faith-based groups and landlords within a community. “We provide rental assistance on a decreasing basis,” explained Yoder. “We are looking for landlords who want to support families.”

Metzler will be meeting with churches and other groups throughout the county to encourage volunteers to connect with Bridge of Hope as the organization looks to increase the number of families in the

100 teams in school districts in Lancaster and Lebanon counties using two different curriculums.

The program, designed for girls ages 8 to 14, will teach about self-esteem, positive body image, and setting and achieving goals.

The organization offers two curricula: GOTR, for girls in grades three through five, and Heart and Sole, designed for girls in sixth through eighth grades.

Heart and Sole is facilitated by coaches, but led by the team members. The curriculum includes both discussion and journaling with a goal of giving girls the tools they need to navigate middle school and be successful in high school.

“We are excited that in our 11th year in Lancaster and Lebanon, we have our biggest Heart and Sole season to date coming up,” said Jennifer West,

who serves as program director for the organization.

They will also take a tour of Stevens College to learn about the programs offered there.

“More than 53% of girls receive financial assistance,” explained Yohe. “This is a major annual fundraising event for scholarship needs.”

Describing the annual event sponsored by SHOUT Student Ministries at Hempfield United Methodist Church as a gigantic indoor yard sale does not even begin to hint at its enormity.

The yard sale practically fills one level of the church building, 3050 Marietta Ave., Lancaster. Youth group members and supporters spend the two weeks before the sale pricing the items and sorting them by department: domestics, furniture, toys, office and craft, collectibles, jewelry, electronics, sporting goods, seasonal/holidays, tools and outdoors, pets, and clothing. Each department will have its own space at the sale.

“The yard sale serves many purposes, but its largest purpose is to support summer youth missions. Youths are expected to take active roles (in the event),” said senior high youth director Stacy Knight. In addition to sorting, the young people help to serve dinner during the preparation nights, and they work as cashiers and runners on the day of the yard sale.

A majority of the sale inventory is contributed by congregation members. “They know we have the sale every year,” Knight remarked. “ We start

communicating after Christmas that we need stuff, we need volunteers, and we need shoppers. We do get people by word of mouth who are cleaning out (their collections).”

This year’s sale will be held from 8 a.m. to 1 p.m. on Saturday, March 14. From noon to 1 p.m., nearly everything will be sold by the bag. Jewelry and collectibles will not be included in the bargain.

“Every year, we have these amazing stories. The yard sale always manages to meet a need for a family or group of families,” Knight said, noting that with careful packing in the bargain bags, customers have been able to restock wardrobes and kitchens after a fire or an unexpected move at much less than the cost of retail.

Knight also said she is grateful that any unsold items can go to area organizations that also help others. Unto, formerly Global Aid Network; Community Aid; Boy Scout troops; and other churches with yard sales have benefited in the past. “These items were entrusted to us for a specific purpose, so we want to make sure that what doesn’t sell is used with good intentions,” Knight said.

Power Packs Project is slated to participate in the café, Knight said, adding, “It’s another great way that we can support more than just us.”

Helping others is a goal of the summer mission trips. Middle school students will go to Philadelphia in June to volunteer with The Philadelphia Project, and the high-schoolers will attend Momentum Youth Conference in Marion, Ind., in July. “We’re trying something new this year. Normally, we go

on just a strict mission trip,” Knight said of the decision to attend Momentum. The conference will combine spiritual training with volunteerism.

“Our teens have grown a lot just in this year,” Knight commented. “I’ve been in awe of the growth and the leadership that they’ve developed. They’re taking on roles in preaching and teaching in the church.

These (mission trips) help to nurture that. These weeks are great for life lessons.”

SHOUT welcomes students in grades seven to 12 for Bible study at the church on Wednesdays from 7 to 9 p.m. On Sundays, middle-schoolers gather for worship and teaching at 10 a.m., and high-schoolers meet from 6 to 8 p.m. for dinner, worship, teaching, and small group discussion.

The Lancaster Symphony Orchestra (LSO) will present a concert titled “Emperor” on Friday, March 13, at 8 p.m. and Saturday, March 14, at 3 p.m. and 8 p.m. The performances will take place at The Cultural Center at Willow Valley Communities, 900 Willow Valley Lakes Drive, Willow Street. Graybil began his piano studies at age 6 and presented his first recital the following year.

He made his orchestral debut at age 14 with Tchaikovsky’s Piano Concerto No. 1 and has subsequently performed with the Fort Worth Symphony and the National Chamber Players. In 2009, he received a Bachelor of Music degree from the Juilliard School under the tutelage of Jerome Lowenthal. In 2011, he completed the master’s degree program at Juilliard where he continued to work with Lowenthal as well as Matti Raekallio.

Lancaster Catholic High School’s head football coach, Todd Mealy, recently resigned due to other professional responsibilities. His assistant, Chris Maiorino, has been promoted to head coach, the school announced.

Mealy guided the Crusaders for two seasons, winning a pair of Section 3 Championships while compiling a 20-3 overall record, including a 17-1 mark in league play. He served as the team’s defensive coordinator for the prior two seasons and as the head coach at Penn Manor for eight seasons (2007-14). Mealy, a history teacher at Penn Manor High School who has a doctorate in American studies, will pursue other opportunities outside of athletics while continuing to focus on his young family.

Maiorino served as the offensive/defensive line coach at Lancaster Catholic for the past four

years, joining the Crusader family with Mealy in 2016. Lancaster Catholic ranked second in the section, rushing for 3,140 yards this year. The team’s top three running backs each averaged more than 7.9 yards per attempt behind the line play.

Overall, Maiorino has coached high school football for 14 years, 12 of those with Mealy. At Catholic High, he was instrumental in the program’s use of Hudl and other video work while also assisting in game management and other administrative duties.

Maiorino graduated from Millersville University in 2004 with a degree in elementary education. He was a four-year member of the Marauder football program, serving as a team captain during his senior year. Maiorino currently is an instructional coach at Edward Hand Middle School in the School District of

Chris Maiorino Lancaster, a role he has held for eight years.

Maiorino and his wife, Lauren, live in Mountville with their four children, Julia, Bennett, Catherine and Lane. The Maiorinos are members of St. Leo the Great Parish, and the two oldest children attend St. Leo the Great Catholic School.

ASSETS Plans Temporary Move ASSETS has announced that it will temporarily relocate onehalf block north while its permanent home at Southern Market undergoes a renovation. The Southern Market project is underway, and the ASSETS office will be closed on Thursday, Feb. 20, and Friday, Feb. 21, as the organization relocates to the historic Yeates Building at 24 S. Queen St., Lancaster, where it will operate for 12 to 18 months.

For years, the future of historic Southern Market has remained in limbo, but ASSETS has continued growing, even when it was the only organization left in the building. With the assurance of its permanent home, ASSETS is making plans

for its new second- and thirdfloor office space and the hub for diverse entrepreneurs, social enterprises, B Corporations and impact-focused businesses that is envisioned for Southern Market.

Streaks Fall in PIAA Opener to N. Allegheny

In the opening round of the PIAA Class 6A state playoffs, the Manheim Township girls’ basketball team traveled to Sewickley Academy to face District Seven champ North Alegheny on Friday, March 6.

The Blue Streaks were coming off a 35-26 defeat at the hands of Governor Mifflin in the fifth-place game of the District Three Class 6A consolations, entering states as the sixth seed from the district.

The Streaks battled back from a nine-point halftime deficit to make it a six-point game heading into the fourth quarter. The Tigers went on a 17-11 run in the final stanza to end Township’s season at 19-9. Groups Post Early STEM Lancaster Posts Education Program Grant Awards

Michael Clow of Leola was named to the dean’s list at the University of New Hampshire, Durham, N.H., for the fall 2019 semester. Clow is a business administration major. He was included on the dean’s list at the honors level.

Students named to the dean’s list have earned recognition through their superior scholastic performance during a semester in which they were enrolled in a fulltime course load of 12 or more graded credits. Students whose grade point average is 3.5 through 3.64 are awarded honors.

The program is oriented toward parents of students in kindergarten through 12th grade.

Dr. Matthew Spalding will present “Prudence: Education’s Greatest Virtue.� Spalding is the Kirby Professor in Constitutional Government at Hillsdale College and the Dean of the Van Andel Graduate School of Government at Hillsdale College’s Washington, D.C., campus. He received his Bachelor of Arts from Claremont McKenna College and his Master of Arts and doctorate. in government from the Claremont Graduate School. In addition to teaching at Hillsdale, he has taught at George Mason University, the Catholic University of America, and Claremont McKenna

College.

Spalding will address the loss of the virtue of prudence in today’s culture. He will argue that prudence must be at the center of education and parenting. Parents, teachers and community members are invited to attend the lecture.

Lancaster Recreation Commission has partnered with STEM Starts Now to provide the program to all of the commission’s early childhood education programs. The goal of the program is to help teachers and parents to teach early science, technology, engineering, and math (STEM) concepts to young children so children will be equipped with all the necessary skills to be successful in school.

STEM Starts Now is a digital parent subscription program created by local pediatric occupational therapist Dr. Aimee Ketchum. Written by a team of early child developmental experts, STEM Starts Now helps babies by supporting parents first through weekly emails tailored to their child’s age and developmental level. The emails include tips, STEM activities, videos, articles, and information on physical, social-emotional, language, and intellectual development to help children master the skills necessary for success in kindergarten, future academics and leadership roles in today’s global world.

The City of Lancaster announced recently that the High Foundation and the Lancaster Community Foundation have awarded over $100,000 to the City of Lancaster Department of Neighborhood Engagement and the Community Action Partnership (CAP). The grants support several community benefit programs.

The Lancaster Community Foundation awarded the Department of Neighborhood Engagement a $20,000 grant for the Neighborhood Leaders Academy program. The Neighborhood Leaders Academy is a training program that educates community members on the resources available to them through the City to help spur positive change in their neighborhoods. Manheim Township School District MT School Board Saturday Morning Conversations The MT community is invited to attend the next Manheim Township School Board Community Conversations on Saturday, March 14th from 10:00 am12:00 pm at the District Office. Community Conversations are held on the Saturday morning between the School Board Work Sessions and Board Action Meetings. These sessions are informal, informational, and conversational in nature to provide our community the opportunity to meet our School Board, ask questions, and discuss important topics related to our schools.

All members of the MT community are invited to attend. The April Community Conversation will be held on Saturday, April 11th, 2020.

MARCH MT School Board Meeting The March School Board Voting Meeting will be held on Thursday, March 19th at 7:00 pm at the District Office.

MT Residents: 2020 Census is Coming!

The U.S. Constitution calls for a head count of all people living in the U.S. and its territories every 10 years. The Census is very important for a variety of reasons. It determines the: • Distribution of 675 billion federal dollars each year to state and local governments (approximately $2,093 per person).

• Districting of U.S. House of Representatives • Decision-making at all levels of government including funds that the Manheim Township School District receives to support our learners in each of our schools.

The official census day is April 1, 2020. Residents can fill out the census online, by phone, or through U.S. mail. Please watch for more information in local and national news. It is imperative to understand your part in this significant event. This is an important initiative, it is confidential, and it is very easy. To learn more about it, visit the United States Census Bureau website at census.gov.

Manheim Township Performing Arts to Present:

MT High School Hosts Successful MiniTHON On Friday, February 28th, the MT High School hosted its tenth annual mini-THON to support the Four Diamonds Fund. A record number of 671 high school students attended the mini-THON held overnight from 6:00pm Friday night (2/28) through 6:00am Saturday morning (2/29) in the high school gymnasium.

The evening raised a total of $144,118.41 for the Four Diamonds Fund! A grand total of $906,158.18 has been donated to The Four Diamonds Fund from MTHS students in the last ten years!
