Taking a seat at the table
BY CATHY MOLITORIS
MargaretThatcher once said, “If you want something done, ask a woman.” There’s a whole lot getting done in Lancaster County, because for the first time ever, all of the Chambers of Commerce in the county are led by women. Each woman brings a wealth of experience and a unique perspective to her role, but all of the leaders share a common goal: They want to make their community a great place to live and work.
Denise Grove, who started her role as executive director of the Elizabethtown Area Chamber of Commerce in February of 2022, said the job offers her a way to really connect with others. “As a lifetime resident of Elizabethtown, I had a strong desire to work where I could make a difference and be a part of strengthening our community,” she remarked, a sentiment shared by Heather Valudes, who has been president and CEO of the Lancaster Chamber of Commerce since June
of 2022. “I love Lancaster and the work that we are able to advance to make our employer community as strong as possible,” she said, noting that the Lancaster Chamber is countywide and represents nearly 1,500 businesses, almost half of the county’s workforce.
For Ashley Zell, who became executive director of the Mount Joy Chamber of Commerce in January, the job brings a chance to get to know her community. “The friends and connections made and the interaction with the Chamber members and community at our numerous different events are definitely the biggest rewards of this position,” Zell said.
The women also remarked that holding the job offers a chance to see their communities thrive. “It’s seeing kids dancing at the farmers market,” commented Rebecca Branle, who has been executive director of Venture Lititz since August of 2021. “It’s celebrating big wins with merchants. It’s watching this town become ever more alive with art,
culture and community pride.” Her perspective matches that of Kristie Schmid, who has been executive director of the Manheim Area Chamber of Commerce since March of 2021. “I love seeing our community respond to the revitalization in town, the increase in businesses and the new community events,” Schmid said. “It’s fulfilling to put your time into something and then see others have pride in it as well.”
For some of the Chamber leaders, the role is a full-time job. For others, it’s something they do in addition to other employment. As a financial adviser for Edward Jones, Jona Green serves as head of the Southern Lancaster County Chamber of Commerce on a volunteer basis, but she’s just as committed to that role as she is her paid job. “The biggest reward is absolutely the connection to our schools and community,” said Green, who has been leading her Chamber since March of 2022. “Our reach is large, but our heart is rooted in service and making more things possible for our members.”

Not unlike town halls, schools and churches, libraries have always been pillars of thriving communities. That couldn’t be more true in Manheim Township, where the public library is now so much more than a traditional library.
The Manheim Township Public Library (MTPL) has evolved into a vibrant hub, sort of a safe haven of learning and exploring, for the community and its citizens. No longer the conventional “book warehouse,”

Speedwell Forge Parkcome for the recreation, stay for the beauty
BY JEFF FALK
If indeed it’s important to get out, exercise and enjoy the great outdoors, then there are few better places to recreate locally than Speedwell Forge County Park.
Situated at 480 Speedwell Forge Road, Lititz, just outside of Brickerville, Speedwell Forge Park is 415 acres of undisturbed natural beauty. Its scenic setting provides visitors the perfect respite from the
hustle and bustle of the everyday rat race.
“First and foremost, it’s about the welfare of our citizens,” said Bob Devonshire, director of general services of Lancaster County, which oversees the operation and maintenance of the park. “People need to get out from behind their TVs or from behind their computers, go outside and enjoy the outdoors. It’s really about getting out there and being part of nature.”

The Manheim Township Public Library is about so much more than books.
Although each of the Chambers faces its own challenges, the directors all project positivity when it comes to their communities.
“Right now, we see the biggest challenge for a number of our members to be finding enough employees,” said Kerry Meyers, who stepped down as executive director of the Mount Joy Chamber of Commerce after more than 11 years and is now executive assistant to Zell. “And for our small shops in Mount Joy, it is
getting customers in their doors. We need the community to support small local businesses.”
Liz Ackerman, who has been executive director of the Northern Lancaster County Chamber of Commerce since January of 2019, said her organization faces a challenge of keeping pace with expansion. “We are growing at an exponential rate,” she explained, noting that she values maintaining a close connection with all of the Chamber’s 430-plus members. “ We pride ourselves on knowing every member’s name and understanding their needs.”
For some of the directors, being a female leader in the world of business has been a challenge they’ve faced with grace. “I have learned to embrace my leadership style and not shy away from opportunities to lead,” said Grove, noting that she attributes her success to surrounding herself with strong
female role models. “Confidence in yourself is key. We all belong at the table, so be brave enough to pull up a chair. If you are afraid, do it anyway.”
That’s a feeling Branle said she understands. “My worst enemy has always been the negative voice in my head, telling me to question my worthiness,” she stated. “If you, too, have a voice like that, learn to tell her to be quiet.”
As committed as they are to their Chambers, all of the women have managed to find a work-life balance. Meyers has been married for 45 years and loves spending time with her two children and five grandchildren. Zell is raising a family of three with her husband, and they enjoy hiking and attending Faith Bible Fellowship Church. Valudes is the married mother of twin daughters, serves as secretary for the Paradise Township Lions Club and helps with Girl Scouts. Grove and her hus-

band enjoy spending time with their seven children and eight grandchildren, and Grove is active with the Rotary Club of Elizabethtown, where she will serve as president beginning in 2025. Ackerman and her husband are raising two children, and she describes herself as a “serial volunteer” with numerous organizations. Branle and her husband have three children, and the family loves to bike, travel and play “very competitive family football games.” Green and her husband are raising two children who are active in their high school’s marching band, and she joked that her favorite hobby is “networking.” Schmid has been married for 22 years, has three girls and loves to read, shop and explore local breweries.
As for advice for other female leaders, each woman referenced striking a balance between being assertive and being kind. “Work with integrity,” Zell stated. “Be willing to humble yourself. Be respectful of others in the workplace and the community.”
Ackerman advised that women should also be kind to themselves. “Own your talents and always accept a compliment,” she remarked. “This is one of the hardest things to learn, but recognizing your strengths, especially when someone points them out to you, provides a confidence that will reach far beyond anything you can read in a book.”
And don’t underestimate what you can achieve, Schmid said, adding, “Never limit yourself. Find your passion and put your all into developing it so you can bring your best to the table.”

ManheimTownship ’s public library has changed to meet the ever-growing research and educational needs of its residents.
“It has evolved over time and evolved with what people like to see,” said Joyce Sands, the director of the MTPL. “The profession has changed more over the last 10 years than it had in the previous 100 years. We’re in the community, providing resources and information that will enrich lives. We’re always testing the waters with what people want. Everyone is welcome here. We’re eager to
serve.”
Located at 595 Granite Run Drive, the MTPL is 20,000 square feet of theories, ideas, history ... and stories. A vast majority of the services that MTPL provides are free.
As guests enter, they are greeted by a warm and welcoming lobby and café. There’s also a children’s library, a young person’s area, the main library, a circulation desk, meeting rooms, a silo for storytelling, study areas, an engaging outside area, even a passport office and a teaching kitchen.
The MTPL offers a wide
range of programs, as well as newspapers, magazines, largeprint books, DVDs, music CDs, puzzles and board games.
Library cards and inside voices are encouraged.
“My favorite part is the kid who thinks he doesn’t like to read, and you find the right book for him, and it creates sparks,” said MTPL assistant director Karin Rezendes. “Some people think they don’t like to read, and I believe they just haven’t found the right book.”
Manheim Township is one of the 14 members of the Library System of Lancaster County. But unlike most of the other members, the MTPL is operated and maintained by its local municipal government.
In 2022, Manheim Township recorded 535,000 checkouts of physical materialsexcluding electronics - making
it the busiest library in Lancaster County.
“We have a lot of people coming in with young children,” said Sands. “And lots of seniors. Some people don’t have the internet at home. Some people find studying or working at home distracting, so they come here.”
The MTPL moved into its current location in 2010. Prior to that, the organization had struggled to find a permanent home, even being housed in a strip mall and in a trailer at different points of its history.
“When I first started here, I walked in and literally asked myself what I would add,” said Sands. “The answer was nothing. Everything was well thought out.”
“We’re maybe not what you would expect if you haven’t been to a library in a while,” said Rezendes.

Bordered by the Pennsylvania State Game Lands of Furnace Hills and encompassing the Pennsylvania Fish and Boat Commission’s Speedwell Forge Lake, the park and surrounding areas allow hunting and fishing. But Speedwell Forge Park also offers visitors opportunities for hiking, bird watching and general nature appreciation.
Visitors should also be willing to peacefully coexist with deer, several species of birds, assorted wildlife and a wide variety of plants and woodland wildflowers.
“There’s trails. There’s nature. There’s plants,” said Devonshire. “There’s a tremendous amount of things to do there. The fishing is fantastic and you can hunt in the park.”
Speedwell Forge is one of nine parks - some 2,000 acres of park land - operated by Lancaster County. It is one of Lancaster County’s most northern parks and second only in size to Lancaster County Central Park.
“I would consider it more of a passive park,” said Devonshire. “It’s more like undis-
turbed woodlands. It’s pretty much been kept as it’s always been. It’s remained in its natural state.”
Lancaster County has good reason to take pride in its park system. So, it follows that the county also has a great desire for residents to utilize and experience its
recreational areas.
“The goal is to try and have a park within close proximity of every resident in the county,” said Devonshire. “Speedwell Forge fills that gap in the northern corridor.”
“I think the message is ‘We’re here. We’re open,’” concluded Devonshire. “We’d

Passing around postcards
BY ADRIAN ESCHENWALD
On the third Monday of each month, the Lancaster County Postcard Club meets at the Farm & Home Center, 1383 Arcadia Road, Lancaster. During the meetings, which are open to the public, members gather to discuss postcards on a wide variety of topics. Each meeting features a specific theme and includes a talk from a
guest speaker who focuses on that theme.
In January, the club creates a schedule of which themes will be incorporated throughout the year, and the topic of the club’s meetings can be anything from railroads to boats to hometowns. For its meeting in January, the club had members share postcards relating to their favorite holidays. On Feb. 20, the topic of the
meeting was cartoons and humor, and attendees participated in a member’s market to buy and sell postcards.
Jere Greider of Mountville has been a member of the postcard club for over 20 years, first becoming inter-
ested in them while adding to his collection of CocaCola memorabilia. After Greider found a Coca-Cola postcard, he began to shift his focus to collecting postcards from around Lancaster County.

Greider is now a postcard dealer and participates in several yearly shows where postcard enthusiasts come together to buy and sell items for their collections. During the
shows, around 25 postcard dealers present boxes of cards that are organized by topic. A buyer will often look for postcards from specific locations, such as his or her hometown
or alma mater. Before the advent of different technologies in the 19th century, postcards were a way for travelers to remember a location they visited without a camera. Many people also used them to communicate with others who lived nearby before the invention of the telephone, as a way to stay connected with each other. Today, postcards are primarily found in tourist attractions, but many vintage cards still circulate in antique stores and on the internet.
“Postcards cover every topic imaginable,” Grei-
der said. “We have so many antique stores and outlets here in central Pennsylvania where you can find them.”
Besides combing through local antiques stores, Greider often finds items to add to his collection by searching for postcards on websites like eBay. Throughout his many years spent collecting postcards, Greider has learned more about the market and what people are seeking. Currently, he is focused on collecting postcards that originate from the Mountville area and the surrounding towns.
During the March meeting, set for Monday, March 20, at 7 p.m., the Lancaster County Postcard Club will share postcards from various places of worship. For more information, search for “Lancaster County Postcard Club” on Facebook.

Annual art auction to return to in-person event
The Friendship Heart Gallery & Studio will present its 20th annual art benefit auction on Thursday, March 23, at Grace Church, 501 W. Lincoln Ave., Lititz. The event has been held virtually since 2020 due to the COVID-19 pandemic but is returning to an in-person format.
The community is invited to celebrate the talents of the Friendship Heart artists as they showcase unique creativity through various mediums of art. The event will consist of light hors d’oeuvres, a silent auction and a special program featuring the Heart artists. This year’s theme was inspired by a collaborative piece of art, which will be featured in the silent auction, titled “Together, Hand in Hand.”
A Paint Brush Pull will be featured once again. Attendees can purchase a numbered paintbrush or a bundle of six for an additional cost, which will enter them into a drawing for a Friendship Heart Gallery prize pack. Included in the basket are a number of Primitives by Kathy Collaborative Collection pieces, handmade cards, jewelry and a gift certificate for a framed original painting from the gallery. The winning paintbrush will be announced at the end of the program.
A-Need item consists of large canvases so that the Heart artists have opportunities to express their creativity on a larger platform independently or collaboratively. The second Fund-A-Need opportunity will help to purchase a high-quality projector and screen, which will be used as an instructional tool and art-making tool in the studio.
