Ken Kulakowsky refuses to stop the presses
BY JEFF FALK
Print is far from dead. But print is being threatened.
Ken Kulakowsky is a historian, an advocate and a guardian of everything related to the art of lettering, typesetting and lithograph. Currently, Kulakowsky is looking for a new location from which to continue his crusade.
“Printing is something that people need to know about,” said Kulakowsky. “I’m really into the history of printing because it has been such a major part of everyone’s history. Everyone should know about printing, without hitting the print button. It’s a craft that needs to be maintained. We’re trying to keep the craft of printing alive.”
One of the founding members of .918 Club at Heritage Press Museum, Kulakowsky is trying to save the education center that bears his name, the Ken Kulakowsky Center for Letterpress & Book Arts, located at
117 Parkside Ave., Lancaster. In August of 2023, Kulakowsky’s landlord, Thadeus Stevens College of Technology, informed him that his Memorandum of Understanding was being terminated effective July 1 of this year.
Thadeus Stevens is planning to use the 2,500-square-foot building at 117 Parkside Ave. as transition space during upcoming construction.
“Hopefully, someone has a place where we can relocate to,” said Kulakowsky. “We have a couple of Realtors looking for us. I hope they’ll come up with something soon. We could share space with other organizations. We pride ourselves on being hands-on.”
Equipped with 10 floor model presses and 15 tabletop presses, the Ken Kulakowsky Center for Letterpress & Book Arts is a unique space to learn about printing and its history. The education center serves as a workshop for school groups, field trips, college classes, technical schools and the general

Innovative nonprofits really deserve a lot of credit; they come up with some very creative ways to raise money.
Take Good Samaritan Services and its upcoming Ephrata Eats outing as an example. It’s an event featuring food, drink and fellowship, all in the name of healthy housing and sound financial practices.
“People love eating good food for a good cause,” said Mandy Ramos, Good Samaritan Services’
director of community engagement. “It’s a wide variety of food, everything from savory to sweet. It’s not a fancy event. It’s held at your local brewing company. You’re probably going to run into someone you know. It’s a very light event. It’s a very social event. You’re going to have a chance to win things and help a local nonprofit. We really want to make it an event where everyone has a good time.”

It’s golf as a vehicle, a learning tool. But there’s something much more cerebral going on here.
The Manheim Township Education Foundation’s (MTEF) Mini Golf Madness is a forum for thinking outside the box, student growth and school spirit, all the while engaging the community.
“Our focus is really on the student,” said Carissa Noel, MTEF’s events committee chair. “We really try to impact the students’ experience. But it’s not just about certain students. We want to impact all students equally. If students are what we’re really about - and they are - the question becomes, ‘How can we involve them more?’ Sometimes it’s easy to lose sight of who we are serving.”

MTEF’s inaugural Mini Golf Madness event will take place on Saturday, March 23, from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. at Landis Run Intermediate School, 25 Blue Streak Blvd., Lancaster. Those in attendance will be afforded an opportunity to play golf holes or courses designed and built by teams of students representing nine Manheim Township High School organizations.
Friends, family members, teachers and community members who attend will be given chances to vote on their favorite group’s design. Those votes will determine the recipients of cash donations of $500 for first place, $250 for second place and $100 for third place, which the organizations can use as they see fit.
Everyone is welcome to attend the free event; people do not need to sign up for a time slot. MTEF did open the event to sponsorship opportunities for local businesses and individuals in the community.
Madness, design teams of four students representing their high school organizations will work together to construct the golf holes. Employing their creativity and problem-solving skills, the teams will navigate timed and resource-limited constraints to produce their themed projects.
Among the Manheim Township High School organizations participating are Aevidum Club, Future Teachers Club, Lions Leo Club, MTHS Dance Team and MT Technology & Engineering Club.

“We want to bring in students and the community to show them how printing is done,” said Kulakowsky, who taught graphic arts in Chester County for 35 years. “Everybody goes out of here with a great experience.”

“In the worst-case scenario, we’d have to put everything in storage until we find a place,” he continued. “Right now, anything is possible. I’m hoping we don’t have to close. It would be a real shame.”

“We support innovation in the classroom,” said Noel. “That’s our work. That’s our purpose. So, we want to be innovative too. It’s always part of the conversation. We’re always open to these concepts.”
Noel added that MTEF executive director Becky Doumaux had seen another group hold a mini golf event and proposed the idea to the board.
“We all said ‘absolutely,’ and we jumped on it,” Noel said.

“This is a real-world design experience,” said Noel. “There’s pressure. The students can think about a theme. But they will have setbacks or things might not go their way. The question is, ‘How do they work through it together?’ We talk about producing career-ready students. The creativity opportunity is so beneficial. When they’re finished, there’s going to be a tremendous amount of validation and satisfaction for the students. There is so much reward at the end.”
The Manheim Township Education Foundation exists to supplement and enhance the education of the nearly 6,000 students in the Manheim Township School District. Over the past 30 years, MTEF has awarded 583 grants totaling $1.85 million to district educators and students.
“This is really at the heart of the Manheim Township Education Foundation’s purpose,” said Noel. “MTEF has really done an excellent job of building connections with the community. On the outside, it just looks like a fun, family event. But when you go through the students’ work, it’s so much more. Some of these things can change the whole trajectory of a child’s life.”
For additional information about the Manheim Township Education Foundation, go to www.mtef.net.
The best-case scenario for the Ken Kulakowsky Center for Letterpress & Book Arts moving forward would be to locate a new, affordable and suitable space soon. The worst-case scenario doesn’t currently seem to be under consideration.
“You need space to be hands-on,” said Kulakowsky. “We’re going to have to pay rent. We have to try to cover the cost of our materials. We might have to do more advertising to schools. Everything right
“This letterpress printing struck a chord with me on the first day of eighth grade when I walked into my graphic arts class,” said Kulakowsky. “Something just clicked with me like, ‘This is really cool!’ When I was a senior, my graphic arts teacher said to me, ‘What are you going to do after high school? You need to be a teacher.’”

More than cute - a commitment
BY ANN MEAD ASH
“There are so many things to consider when adopting a pet,” said Damon March, director of operations for Humane Pennsylvania, which oversees the Lancaster Center for Animal Life-Saving on Route 30 as well as the Freedom Center for Animal Life-Saving in Reading. “Those who have never been the primary caretaker, it’s difficult to see everything. We discourage people from making a snap decision.”
Different types of pets require different levels of care as do the individual pets, based on age and a variety of factors, and the commitment continues for up to 20 years depending on the pet. “I wish people would better manage the expectation that they will walk in and find a pet for them,” March pointed out. “Pets are not universal. They have wide-ranging personalities, and finding a good match for you is not always easy.”
To foster more successful pet ownership, Humane Pennsylvania seeks to counsel would-be pet owners with questions about lifestyle, time and interest in working with a pet, and expenses.
March noted that getting a puppy is probably the most challenging of pet adoptions, pointing out that those who like to travel
spontaneously might do better with a lower-maintenance cat.
Training, both house training and behavior modification, is most important and time-consuming with puppies. “Housebreaking (is) a pretty major thing, but there are other things, and one of the most important is the general manners,” emphasized March, who noted that laying down house rules from the first day and enforcing them 24/7 is key. “When people return puppies, it’s because they underestimated how much work those general behaviors would be,” he said. “One of the bigger mistakes with a very young puppy is to delay the beginning of that training. As dogs mature, allowing behaviors to persist can lead to really undesirable behaviors such as barking or growling over food or treats.” March recommended working with a trainer in person, online, or by video. “That second set of eyes can give you valuable reasons for the behavior,” he noted.
Sometimes new pet owners are not prepared for the costs associated with the animal’s care and feeding. Melissa Detrick, owner and administrator of Honey Brook Animal Hospital, said that knowing what is best to feed a particular animal is important, but that owners should also be prepared for
the costs of first-year visits, which may include vaccinations, neutering, and preventatives. Pet-sitting and grooming expenses will come into play with certain types of pets, as well.
“My advice to pet owners, especially new pet owners, is multifaceted,” said Detrick. “Do the research before taking the leap.” Detrick pointed out that practicing preventive care combined with a balanced diet and maintaining a good relationship with the animal’s vet is all important. She also recommended considering pet insurance.
According to March, when a relationship does not work
out between a pet and an owner, the problem often lies with the owner’s perspective. “Most of the time it’s because the caretaker failed to manage expectations for the situation,” said March, who noted that owners may think that an experience with an animal will be similar to a past pet experience or a friend’s or relative’s pet experience. “That’s why relationships fail,” he noted.
Humane Pennsylvania formed in 2014 when the Humane Leagues of Lancaster and Berks County merged. Cats are housed at the Lancaster location, and dogs are sheltered at the Berks County facility.

Damon March, director of operations for Humane Pennsylvania, holds a cat that is being sheltered at the Lancaster Center for Animal Life-Saving on Route 30.
24 E. Main St., Ephrata, on Tuesday, March 12, at 6 p.m. More than 10 northern Lancaster County restaurants will be there with their unique culinary offerings.
Those attending will be afforded an opportunity to vote for their favorite dishes.
There will also be music, giveaway drawings, other games and a direct appeal for Good Samaritan funding.
“One of our marketing aspects comes from when people see the restaurants who are going to be there,” said Ramos. “They know they’re going to have fun trying food they never tried before. The event is designed to bring in new people. We’re hoping a mix of marketing will get them there. But we also want our current donors there, those who already believe in the work we’re doing.”
“We love alliteration, and we live in Ephrata,” Ramos continued. “We wanted an event to showcase vendors. We assume our friends here in Ephrata like to eat.”
Ramos said Good Samaritan Services is hoping to attract 150 to 200 attendees to Ephrata Eats. It’s a turnout that would raise an estimated $50,000 of Good Samaritan Services’ multi-million-dollar operating budget.
“It’s a portion of what we need to run our nonprofit in Lancaster and Chester counties,” said Ramos. “We exist to help people move from crisis to stability. Housing is a big part of it, but it doesn’t end with housing. It’s individual case management. We have a case manager who can help you with all your needs to hit stability. (Clients) have an advocate who is helping them with everything. It addresses the whole person.”
Functioning under the motto “Restoring Hope, Transforming Lives,” Good Samaritan Services operates in five locations - Phoenixville, Coatesville, Kennett Square, Lancaster city and Ephrata. The nonprofit, which addresses homelessness and poverty issues, was founded in Phoenixville in 1999 and opened its Ephrata office in 2011.
“Over the last 13 years, our commitment in this community has been to helping our neighbors,” said Ramos. “We want everyone in our community to have a chance to live a great life. We know this community. That’s why we wanted to have this event in Ephrata. We’re passionate about it. That’s what keeps us going every day.”
Choral group to present concert
Jerusalem Lutheran Church, 36 Church St., Rothsville, will host the Lancaster Chamber Singers in concert on Sunday, March 10, at 3 p.m. as part of its 2023-24 Music at Jerusalem Concert Series.
The Lancaster Chamber Singers, directed by Jay W. Risser, has presented choral music in central Pennsylvania for over 45 years. Consisting of 30 to 35 auditioned vocalists, the ensemble performs throughout Lancaster County and its immediate surroundings, and has also appeared at venues such
as the National Cathedral in Washington, D.C.; Longwood Gardens; and Bruton Parish Church in Colonial Williamsburg in Virginia, where the group presented a concert to help celebrate the 400th anniversary of the founding of Jamestown.

Sierra Club seeking grant proposals
The Sierra Club - Lancaster Group will accept proposals for the next round of its “green project” grants through Sunday, March 31. Any Lancaster County 501(c)(3) organization with a project that promotes sustainability, expands environmental awareness and improves green infrastructure is eligible to apply for a grant.
For additional information on Good Samaritan Services’ Ephrata Eats event or to purchase tickets, go to www.goodsam services.org, click on “Ways You Can Help” and select “Events & Campaigns.”
The program annually awards grants of up to $500 to charitable, educational or business 501(c)(3) groups that demonstrate a commitment to the Sierra Club’s mission of “exploring, enjoying and protecting the planet” in Lancaster County. When applying for a grant, organizations should consider how their projects relate to an ecological preservation or educational effort. Projects may focus on topics such as storm water management, rain gardens and rain barrels; native plantings; pollinator plants; organic gardens; composting programs; or
hands-on learning. The Lancaster Group will offer its expertise and labor to support the projects that are awarded grants. Eighty-four organizations have been awarded grants over the past eight years. To apply, visit http:// lancastersierraclub.org/ grant-program/. After submission, an email will be returned to confirm that the proposal has been received.
Winners will be announced on Earth Day, Monday, April 22, and soon after, a list of the awardees will be posted at www.lancastersierra club.org.
The grant program has been supported by funds raised primarily through the Lancaster Group’s former Polar Bear 5K Trail Run/Hikes and, more recently, from funds received through its participation in Lancaster’s annual ExtraGive. Students invited to enter art contest
The Shapiro Administration invites all firstthrough sixth-grade students in Pennsylvania to enter the 2024 Lyme Art Contest by creating a short video or poster focusing on the theme “Protect. Check. Remove.” The annual contest aims to help students, Scout troops, and community youth programs learn how to prevent Lyme disease by educating them about ticks, including where these creatures live, how to prevent bites, and how to remove ticks that do bite.
Officials from the Departments of Health (DOH), Education (PDE), Environmental Protection (DEP), and Conservation and Natural Resources (DCNR) encourage young students to participate in the contest and help raise awareness of Lyme disease.
The deadline for entries is 5 p.m. on Friday, March 15. Contest information can be found at http:// tinyurl.com/TickborneDis easeArtContest24.
Finalists will be notified by mail and will be invited to an award ceremony at
the state Capitol in May. In 2023, nine winners were recognized at a ceremony with representatives from DOH, PDE, and DCNR.
Pennsylvania has one of the highest annual counts of Lyme disease cases in the nation. Ticks are usually found in shrubs, weeds, leaf litter, and tall grasses, but can be found anywhere there is grass. When exploring outside, it is important to take the proper steps to lower one’s risk of getting bitten; these steps include covering exposed skin, wearing light colors to help detect ticks, and using an EPA-approved insect repellent. Use permethrin spray on shoes, clothes, and gear as an added protection before spending time outdoors.
After being outside, people should check themselves and their children and pets thoroughly for ticks and remove any that they find. Then, people should shower to help remove any ticks they may have missed. Clothes may be put in the dryer on high heat to help kill any ticks that might still be stuck to the clothes.

Club and museum announce strategic partnership
Lancaster County Bird Club (LCBC) has formed a strategic partnership with the North Museum of Nature and Science with the aim of enhancing ornithological education and outreach in southcentral Pennsylvania. The partnership will put special emphasis on finding ways to share the science of ornithology and the hobby of birding with residents of southcentral Pennsylvania and help youths develop an understanding of wild birds and the conservation issues they face.
As part of the partnership approved by the LCBC board of directors in December 2023, LCBC will now hold its September through March programs at the museum on the second Thursday of each of
those months at 7 p.m. The programs are free and open to the public, and feature a speaker on a topic related to the science of ornithology and the hobby of birding.
LCBC and the North Museum will also look at ways to collaborate on enhancing existing educational offerings related to wild birds and their conservation as well as expanding birding-related offerings to particularly target youths through engaging a variety of youth-focused organizations. The partnership will also open ways for both entities to collaborate on birding-related offerings at Millport Conservancy; the museum recently took charge of oversight and support roles at the conservancy and will utilize
the conservancy as a permanent outdoor classroom space. LCBC and the North Museum will also explore ways to work together to see that the museum’s world-class ornithological collection - with most specimens dating back to the 1800s - will continue to be available for generations to come.
LCBC has a long history of involvement and association with the museum resulting from the club’s early ties to Franklin & Marshall College and ornithologists and staff members at the college who were key to the museum’s founding. LCBC remains one of the longest-supporting financial contributors to the museum, supporting the museum’s natural history
program and ornithological collection since its founding.
LCBC has been dedicated to securing the cultivation of public sentiment in the preservation of Lancaster County’s native bird life since its founding in December 1937. The club is a nonprofit membership organization with a mission focused on bird observation, conservation and education, and promoting the recording and dissemination of bird observations. The club consists of more than 350 members and fulfills its mission through building partnerships and a variety of offerings, such as field trips, lectures, programs and scholarships. More information is available at www.lancasterbirdclub.org.
Club plans bird-related program, field trips
The Lancaster County Bird Club (LCBC) has planned several programs, which are free and open to the public.
The LCBC will hold a meeting on Thursday, March 14, at 7 p.m. at the North Museum of Nature and Science, 400 College Ave., Lancaster.
Todd Underwood, a professor of biology at Kutztown University (KU), will present Migration Patterns and Overwintering Locations of Veeries in South America. Veeries are songbirds that breed in dense, moist forests of eastern North America and are easily recognized by their distinctive song. Using the latest tracking
technology, Underwood followed the migration of veeries from their breeding grounds to their overwintering sites in South America. The presentation will discuss patterns of veery migration and describe the overwintering locations and habitats of these birds in South America.
Underwood earned a Ph.D. in zoology from the University of Manitoba in Canada. At KU, he teaches courses on topics such as ornithology and animal behavior, and he studies the behavior and ecology of birds. For the past 25 years, his research has focused on host defenses against avian brood
parasitism. Recently, he began a long-term study of the ecology of veeries breeding at French Creek State Park. Christopher M. Heckscher from Delaware State University served as a co-author on this presentation.
For more information, call 717-856-3851 or 717-725-2717.
The LCBC will also offer two field trips in March. Preregistration by 6 p.m. the day before the trip is required.
On Saturday, March 9, John Lahr will lead a trip at Middle Creek Wildlife Management Area at 4:30 p.m. Participants will look for American woodcock and waterfowl. The main objec-
tive of the trip is to hear or view the courtship display of the American woodcock. To learn more, contact Lahr at 717-205-3030 or john lahr@gmail.com.
Derek Stoner will lead a trip along the Susquehanna River starting at Wrightsville on Saturday, March 16 at 1 p.m. Attendees will look for little and black-headed gulls and other river birds. For more details, contact Stoner at 484-723-3348 or derek stoner@hotmail.com.

“Our American Family” is a portrait of a closeknit Philadelphia family grappling with the legacy of generational substance

judge of the Lancaster County Court of Common Pleas and founder of the Lancaster Drug Court; Kayla Weiler, manager of addiction medicine at Penn Medicine; and Chris Dreisbach, CEO of Blueprints for Addiction Recovery and addiction survivor.
After the film showing, there will be a question-and-answer session
with the film’s director, Hallee Adelman, and the mother of the family featured in the documentary, Linda Geraghty.
Tickets are free but required for entry. They may be reserved at www .artsmu.com, by calling 717-871-7600, or in person at the Ware Center or at the Student Memorial Center on the campus of Millersville University.

Annual pet-themed art exhibit set
Representatives from the Sebastian Foundation for Animal Rescue attended the opening reception for the “We Love Our Pets” show in 2023.
BY ADRIAN ESCHENWALD
Mulberry Art Studios, 21 N. Mulberry St., Lancaster, is now accepting submissions for its sixth annual We Love Our Pets show. Artists and pet owners in Lancaster County are encouraged to enter original artwork of their animal
companions until Friday, April 12. Accepted submissions will be displayed at Mulberry Art Studios in May for National Pet Month.
Amateur and professional artists of all ages are invited to participate in the show, and submissions may be artwork in any medium, such as
CLC plans Second Friday Program
The Circle Legacy Center (CLC) will present a Second Friday Program on Friday, March 8, from 6:30 to 9 p.m. at Community Mennonite Church, 328 W. Orange St., Lancaster. A local Native American woman will share her story of surviving domestic violence. She will also

present information about trauma-informed responses, how people can assist victims of domestic violence, and human trafficking of native peoples in the past and present. Attendees are asked to bring food to share if they are able, along with their own place settings.
Every year, Mulberry Art Studios partners with a local nonprofit organization for the We Love Our Pets show; a portion of all artwork sold at the exhibit will benefit the Sebastian Foundation for Animal Rescue. Amy Garrety, the organizations founder, will attend the opening night of the exhibit from 5 to 8 p.m. on Friday, May 3. Garrety and a team of volunteers and rescued dogs from the Sebastian Foundation will receive donations at the door. We chose to have this show benefit Sebastian Foundation for Animal Rescue
our very first year because they are a local nonprofit that really pours their all into helping the animals in our area find homes, Kulfan said. We have continued to have it benefit the Sebastian Foundation each year because the more we get to know them, the more we love them and all they do.
Mulberry Art Studios partners with various school districts in Lancaster County to incorporate the show in art teachers curricula, allowing students to create pieces for the show during class time. Awards will be given out for Best in Show and Peoples Choice in the adult and youth categories. The recipients of the Best in Show award will be chosen by a panel of artists.
Although accepted artwork will remain on display until the end of May, vendors will only be present during the opening reception. Last year, vendors sold a variety of items, including dog treats, pet accessories, pet portraits, animal grooming services and refreshments for humans.
We get some really incredible artwork that is deserving of awards. But personally, my favorite part is when little kids have submitted art into the show, Kulfan said. I get to see their faces light up as they come into the building and see their artwork up on the gallery wall with all the other artwork.
