MTPA To Present “Once On This Island” By Ann Mead Ash
In the fall of 1990, Mark Wagner, director of the Manheim Township Performing Arts (MTPA), and his wife, Beth, entered a theater on Broadway to see a musical they knew nothing about called “Once on This Island.” “We couldn’t have been more delighted with our choice,” said Mark. “We were enthralled with a beautiful tale of the power and persistence of love in the midst of prejudice.” Later that decade, Mark directed the show on the
Manheim Township High School (MTHS) stage, and now he is preparing to do it again. MTPA will present “Once on This Island” on Thursday, Friday, and Saturday, March 14, 15, and 16, at 7:30 p.m. in the MTHS auditorium, 115 Blue Streak Blvd., Lancaster. “Once on This Island” is a celebration of the human heart written by Lynn Ahrens and Stephen Flaherty that combines “My Love, My Love” by Rosa Guy with Hans Christian Andersen’s “The Little Mermaid.” The story opens on
a storm-tossed island as the inhabitants comfort a frightened little girl, played by Kristen Bennett, by telling the story of an orphan named Ti Moune, who was destined to love too much for a human heart to bear. The villagers telling the story transform into the characters, including Ti Moune, played by Annalise Prentiss, and her rich, ill-fated love, Daniel, played by Nicolas Rivera. Daniel rejects her for Andrea, “one of his own,” played by Annyka Savin. Ti Moune’s foster parents, Mama Euralie and Tonton Julian, are See MTPA pg 3
