Manheim Township

Every day, the United States disposes of millions of pounds of unused food. Every day, millions of Americans go hungry.
A local organization is working toward bridging that gap between surplus and need, supply and demand.
Blessings of Hope’s mission is to end world hunger, or at least minister
Alwaysa problem solver, Tom Rudzinski started out just trying to make an impact, simply seeking to make a difference. Thirtysix years of service later and somehow his job with Manheim Township Police Department turned into a career. Where does the time go?
Rudzinski has decided to step aside as the chief of the Manheim T ownship Police Department. Township’s veteran top cop made the announcement at the beginning of the year and his retirement won’t officially take effect until the beginning of the summer, but it’s a decision he’s been mulling for nearly two years.
“My goal was to make a difference for as long as possible,” said Rudzinski. “I hope I’ve been able to improve the quality of life in Manheim Township. I hope that I did a good job of making the community a safe place to live.”
A native of Baltimore, Rudzinski came to Manheim Township as a wide-eyed patrolman in 1987. Much has changed since that time, but Rudzinski’s enthusiasm for local law enforcement has not. He noted that he never left the township for another position simply because “That’s how I was brought up.”
“My goal was to make a difference for as long as possible.”
His successor has yet to be named, and Rudzinski has expressed an interest in providing input on exactly who that should be. Rudzinski has always led through both words and examples.
“I know the officers here will continue that legacy. It’s just time for me to take a break,” he stated.
A cancer diagnosis has figured into Rudzinski’s decision to retire, but he stressed that the illness did not make it necessary that he retire.
Rudzinski was diagnosed with an uncurable and inoperable, but treatable, form of cancer in April of 2021. Chemotherapy treatments have kept the cancer at bay, but Rudzinski’s prognosis is unclear.
“For the first three months after my diagnosis, I was trying to figure out what I was going to do,” said Rudzinski. “I wanted to keep working. I could still do all the things that needed to be done, just slower because of the chemo. When people look at me, they wouldn’t know about my diagnosis.”
After graduating from Franklin & Marshall College, Rudzinski worked his way up the ranks of the Manheim Township Police Department, from sergeant to lieutenant to chief.
to the dietary needs of as many citizens of this country that it can. Blessings of Hope operates out of a 44,000-square-foot warehouse on Becker Road, Leola, and is planning a 160,000-square-foot food processing/distribution center east of Ephrata. The organization is headed by New Holland natives and brothers David Lapp, Steve Lapp and Jake Lapp, as well as founder Aaron Fisher of Kirkwood.

“Flowers always make people better, happier and more helpful; they are sunshine, food and medicine to the soul.” - Luther Burbank.
Wo rk to Bernie Hendricks isn’t a chore; it’s an opportunity help others.
Age to Hendricks isn’t a number; it’s experience and wisdom.
Flowers to Hendricks aren’t merely beautiful; they’re gifts from God to be nurtured.
“I never get tired of looking at flowers,” said Hendricks. “It doesn’t
take much to make me happy. We grow flowers with a little help from Him (God). Look what God created. It doesn’t get better than that.”
Perhaps the most important thing to understand about Hendricks is that she’s a unique individual who’s living her best possible life. No regrets. No looking back. No excuses.
“The main thing is to be honest and forthright,” said Hendricks. “I won’t beat around the bush. I just want to be remembered as an upfront and honest person.”

But at 84, Hendricks isn’t going anywhere any time soon.
Hendricks remains firmly entrenched as part of the management team at Hendricks’ Flower Shop, 322 S. Spruce St., Lititz, a local business her husband’s parents started. She still works 65 hours a week, because “it’s what I want,” even though she handed off the day-to-day operations of the mom-andpop shop to her daughter, SueEllen Hendricks, five years ago.
“I feel great. I’m busier than ever,” said Hendricks. “I think you should appreciate everything you do. I’m a consistent worker. I do things and lift things most 84-year-olds can’t.”

The Spring Roses Vendor Show 2023 will return for its sixth season on Saturday, March 4, from 8:30 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. The show will take place in the Manheim Community Farm Show Exhibition Building, 502 E. Adele Ave., Manheim.
The event will showcase creators, makers, and direct sales representatives from all over Lancaster County and beyond. Among the featured products will be clothing, baked goods, jewelry and diamond art, glass-blown objects, and woodworking. DLT Farms will offer a hot food stand during the event.
Teen Central Manheim will have hot beverages and some food items available for purchase along information about the organization. The event is free and open to the public. For details, search for “Spring Roses Vendor Show” at www.face book.com. To learn more, contact Janessa or Della at springrosesvendorshow @gmail.com. dricks’ Flower Shop was founded in the early 1900s. Over the years, Hendricks’ Flower Shop gained two greenhouses - from the original four to six - and a reputation around town for being a fair and caring purveyor of nature’s beauty.
Hendricks is much more comfortable talking about the business’s place in the community than she is about herself.
“It’s not a business to me,” said Hendricks. “I love it because it’s helping other people. It’s a one-of-a-kind place and that makes me happy. I want to be known as a person who helps people, not one who just grabs money.”
Born and raised in Lititz, Hendricks has never strayed too far from the town, mainly
because home is where the heart is. Thoughts of retirement never enter her mind, not because she wouldn’t know what to do with herself, but because she’s never known anything else.
“I think one day a hearse will pull up next to the shop,
and I think they’ll come to get me with my shoes on,” she said.

The Shaarai Shpielers of Congregation Shaarai Shomayim will present their 24th musical Purimshpiel, “Dice and Dolls,” on Sunday, March 5, at 1:30 p.m. in the synagogue’s sanctuary at 75 E. James St., Lancaster. Admission is free and open to the public.
The Purimshpiel is a comic production with the name coming from the Yiddish word “spiel,” meaning “play.” It features participants wearing costumes that depict the characters in the story in the Book of Esther. This story describes what transpired on Purim, in which Esther and her cousin, Mordechai, save
the Jews from death at the hands of Haman, and the production shares why Purim has become an important Jewish holiday. Each year the Shpielers take the songs from a particular American musical, parody the lyrics of those songs, and merge the themes of that musical with the story of the Book of Esther.
This year, the group is using the 1950 Frank Loesser Broadway hit “Guys and Dolls” as its vehicle. The Shpielers will parody such songs as “If I Were a Bell,” “I’ve Never Been in Love Before,” I’ll Know When My Love Comes Along,” “Luck Be a Lady,” “I Love You a Bushel

Trucks are just one of the tools used to carry out Blessings of Hope’s mission.
“ We think there’s more than enough food for people not to go hungry,” said David, Blessings of Hope’s CEO. “Basically, what we do is acquire large volumes of food and make it available to nonprofits. I’m not sure why we’re wasting so much food, but if businesses donate it instead of getting rid of it, it’s a win-win for everybody.”
Blessings of Hope services an area within a 200-mile radius of Lancaster County and, in 2020, opened a satellite operation in Campbellsville, Ky. The organization works with 200 donors and helps supply 700 partner ministries, like food banks, church pantries and other community nonprofits.
Through the direct work of its partner ministries, Blessings of Hope helps provide about 70,000 meals each day.
“Our focus is to serve the organizations that reach people in need,” said David. “It’s
Saturday, March 25 • 10:00 a.m.-1:00 p.m.
about being able to serve people in their time of need and get them back on their feet. It’s really hard to tell how many people we’ve reached over the years.”
Picking up and delivering f ood donations can be a “logistical challenge,” noted David. Blessings of Hope tackles that challenge with 50 pieces of mechanical equipment that include a fleet of trucks, along with 70 employees and an army of volunteers.
“ We have a great team of people who are putting this all together,” said David. “I guess the message is ‘If you’re not sure how to change something, start out by doing something right. If we can influence the people around us, we can have an impact for the good.’”
In some ways, Blessings of Hope’s mission is already well engaged. In others, it’s still in its infancy.
Blessings of Hope’s roots can be traced to 2010, when Fisher began handing out seven boxes of food per week to local families in need. In 2020, Blessings of Hope distributed more than 65 million pounds of food.
“ We knew it would grow, but not this fast,” said David. “ We’ve always thought it could get big because of the availability of product. We think we’re just starting to grow. We think it could turn into a national organization serving cities around the country.”

“Lancaster County: An Art Exhibit,” featuring pieces by local artist Joanne McIlvaine, will be on display at the Landis Homes Crossings Art Gallery through April. The exhibit is on display in the Crossings Gallery, located in the Calvin G. and Janet C. High Learning and Wellness Center on the campus of Landis Homes, 1001 E. Oregon Road, Lititz. The gallery is open from 7 a.m. to 8 p.m.
McIlvaine is a graduate of Lancaster Mennonite High School and received a fine art degree from Goshen College in the 1980s. She did not start oil painting seriously until 2009, when she took a plein air painting class at Pennsylvania College of Art & Design
and learned how to paint outdoors on location.
“I’ve been painting outdoors with oil paints for over 12 years. Growing up on a farm in Lancaster County, I’ve always found inspiration in natural beauty,” McIlvaine said. “My goal with each painting is to express beauty: to instill a sense of wonder, to marvel at the variety in nature, and to share a mood or feeling that the place inspired. I’m trying to capture the soul of the place on my canvas.”
Proceeds from the art gallery support the Landis Homes Caring Fund. For more information, contact Deb Laws-Landis at 717-381-3583 or dlawslandis@landis.org.

Rudzinski characterized his job as police chief as more of a manager or an administrator, adding, “I don’t get out on the streets much.”
“Making split-second decisions is hard,” said Rudzinski, a resident of Manheim Township. “But we have so many great people here. We have our struggles, we have our issues, but we’re working through them. We try to do our best every day.”
With its force of 65 officers, Rudzinski’s department polices the Manheim Town-
ship area on a 24/7 basis. Under Rudzinski’s guidance, the Manheim Township police force continues to operate under the belief that safety is everyone’s business and really is a matter of cooperation.
“I truly believe our residents love us,” said Rudzinski. “I think they think we’re the best of the best. There’s always going to be that 10 to 20% who don’t believe that. Some days it’s a struggle to make people believe we’re there for them and not against them.”

The Lanco Recovery Benefit Auction, which will include live music, food vendors, and a candy drop, will be held at 320 N. Ronks Road, Bird-inHand, on Friday and Saturday, Aug. 4 and 5. Festivities will kick off at 5 p.m. on Aug 4 and at 9 a.m. on Aug. 5.
Currently, organizers are looking for sponsors to help cover the costs of bands, food, marketing, and more, and for businesses and individuals to donate new items to be auctioned. Among the new items Frank Gaston of Slow Down Ministries has gathered to go up for bids are motorcycle parts and accessories, parts for off-road trucks, and a bicycle. “We would accept gift cards, vacations, or a dinner for six in a home,” said Millette.
To provide entertainment between live auction sets, Santiago has lined up family Gospel folk groups from Ohio that he said are well-known in the Lancaster area. On Friday, groups include Dan and Amanda Esh, the Brandenberger Family, and Matt & Nimmie. The Brandenberger Family will play again on Saturday, along with Conrad Fisher, Broadway, and Endless Hallelujah Band. A candy drop is planned for late Saturday morning or early afternoon.
“One of our purposes is to let people know this is a unified effort of several minnistries wanting to help each other,” said Millette. “Right now, we are hoping individuals and businesses will stand with us as sponsors.” He added, “(We are looking for) people who find joy in helping those who can’t help themselves.” The Potter’s House provides a safe place for men and women to recover from addiction, experience Christcentered discipleship, and embrace their God-given destiny. RTCM has a mission to change the lives of men with addictions by introducing them to Jesus and helping them process past trauma to deal with problems in a healthy way and become positive members of society. “We are there to give people a leg up with a desire that they become contributing members of the community,” said Millette. “We all benefit from that.”
Readers who are interested in sponsorships or making donations to the auction may call Gaston at 717-723-7253, Santiago at 717-304-3341, or Millette at 717-919-0316.
