Birds of a feather flock together
BY JEFF FALKWild birds are free and colorful and interesting. Wild birds are also accessible, plentiful and unique.
The Lancaster County Bird Club (LCBC) exists to observe and document birds, preserve them and advocate for them. For members of LCBC, birding is more than just a pastime; it’s a passion, a lifestyle.
“It becomes a way to get out and enjoy nature,” said LCBC president Ted Nichols. “Anyone can walk outside of their house, and in 15 minutes, you’re going to see a bird. The fact that birds are there is something that makes birding fun. It’s not a hobby that
requires a lot of money to get into. It can be done everywhere. The people who are into it as a hobby are welcoming, and they’re willing to mentor newcomers.”
is a love of birds.
“It becomes a way to get out and enjoy nature.”
An independent organization founded in 1937, LCBC is made up of over 350 dues-paying members who hail from every part of Lancaster County and beyond. They are from varying walks of life, occupations and backgrounds, and the only thing that they all share
“Throw a dart at a map of Lancaster County, and every ZIP code is represented by our membership,” said Nichols. “But even beyond that, a large part of central Pennsylvania is represented by our membership. That’s the interesting thing about birding; it attracts people of all demographics and all ages. They’re people of a wide variety of occupations. It’s a general cross section of society as a whole. It’s a hobby that truly is open to everyone.”
LCBC meets at 7 p.m. on the second Thursday of every month from September through March at the North Museum of Nature
BY JEFF FALKTired of the short, cold days? Suffering from a touch of cabin fever? Have you got the winter blahs?
The Big, Big Jazz Band has the remedy. It involves tapping your feet, grooving to music, and leaving the house for a night out.
“People want to get out of
the house. By this time, people are tired of snow. We’re giving people a night on the town if they want to come out,” said Al Kernc, publicity manager for the Big, Big Jazz Band.
The Big, Big Jazz Band will present its 42nd annual Beat the Winter Blahs Ball on Friday, March 8, at the Lancaster Country Club, 1466 New Holland Pike,

Over the course of the 10-week spring season, GOTR teams will meet twice a week for a one-and-a-half-hour session. Friends to display artwork at Ware Center
In honor of Women’s History Month, the Ware Center, 42 N. Prince St., Lancaster, will host an exhibit of artworks by Millersville University (MU) alumnae Kerry Sacco and Ann Thomas in the Regitz Gallery. The exhibit, “Connections and Pathways,” will open with a reception on Frist Friday, March 1, from 6 to 8 p.m., during which visitors may meet the artists and view the collection.
In this exhibition, Sacco and Thomas interpret the complexity of nature and celebrate 40 years of friendship through connections and pathways to the landscape of their worlds.

for a 5K celebration at the end of the season. The 5K will be held on Saturday, May 4, at Franklin & Marshall College, 637 College Ave., Lancaster.
“‘Run’ is in the name, but the program is really about helping to lift up and empower girls,” said Jennifer West, executive director of GOTR Lancaster. “You can run, hop, roll, walk or push through our lessons and the 5K.”

Both artists graduated with art degrees from MU, but their initial path did not follow the painting route. Sacco pursued graduate studies in lithography at MU and the Pennsylvania Academy of Fine Arts. During that time, she began to appreciate works by the Pennsylvania Impressionists, which led to further studies of oil painting. Her landscapes in the upcoming exhibition focus on well-known local subjects, and the artworks are notable for their composition, color, and brushwork.
Upon graduating from MU, Thomas focused on architecture, interior design, and other entrepreneurial pursuits. A decade ago, after raising two daughters, she embraced the one medium that had eluded her: oil painting. Primarily self-taught, she creates landscapes that explore the beauty that surrounds her home in Hunterdon County, N.J., and in Bucks County.
The exhibition will be on view through Friday, March 29. The gallery is open daily. For more information, call 717-871-7814.
This year, GOTR will introduce a new curriculum titled “Hello Superstar.” While the new material shares many of the same goals as GOTR’s previous lessons, it will place an additional focus on the importance of inclusion and celebrating diversity. As part of the curriculum, each team will collaborate on a project that will positively impact the local community, and the girls will have an opportunity to choose where to direct the focus of the assignment. In the past, participants’ projects have supported animal rescues, teachers throughout their school district, local first responders and individuals who could use a care package.
“The girls learn that
GOTR participants receive support from coaches and members of the community.
it’s important to think of others while taking care of yourself, and it’s really neat to see teams choose a project meaningful to them,” said Kylie Homan, GOTR Lancaster’s program director. “They are not only making a difference in somebody’s life, but also in the community at large.”
GOTR Lancaster expects to have more than 1,200 girls and 90 teams participate in the spring season, which will require a minimum of 400 volunteer coaches. Coaches are not required to be runners themselves, and students in high school are invited to sign up as volunteers. For more information, visit www.gotrlancaster.org.
Bird Club from pg 1
The seventh annual Spring Roses Vendor Show will take place on Saturday,

March 2, from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. at the Manheim Community Farm Show Exhibition Building, 502 E. Adele Ave., Manheim.
Small and local businesses will present their wares and services, including baked items, handmade jewelry, 3D printed figurines, diamond art, books, skin care products, natural cleaning products, cooking wares, and hand-crocheted

at Middle Creek Wildlife Management Area visitor’s center, 100 Museum Road, Stevens; and in July and August at Lancaster Conservancy’s Climbers Run Nature Center, 226 Frogtown Road, Pequea. Meetings are conducted indoors and consist of the sharing of recent bird sightings, a 45-minute ornithology lecture and a question-and-answer session.
LCBC also sponsors more than 30 different outings or field trips - at least one every month - at a variety of locations in and around Lancaster County for observing and documenting birds. The meetings and many of the field trips are open to the public.
“It’s a lot of what people want to make of it,” said Nichols. “Some people take photos, some record audio, some draw. For the most part, we observe birds through binoculars.”
“Checklisting is a big part
of the hobby,” he continued, explaining checklisting is identifying and recording different species by sight or sound. “That data is recorded, and we keep it on account for the club. Some people have zero interest in keeping lists. They want to live in and enjoy the moment.”
There exist 10,000 species of birds worldwide, 355 of which have been observed in Lancaster County.
“We’re a club with a long history,” said Nichols. “But the focus of getting out and seeing birds remains the same. If you have an interest in birding, we’re here to cultivate that. Once you get involved, it doesn’t take long to see the regular birds in Lancaster County. Birding opens your eyes to the conservation measures in play.”

Help sought for Aaron’s Acres summer camp
BY JEFF FALKIt’s more than just a summer experience. It’s an altruistic adventure, a chance to step outside the proverbial box, an opportunity to make a difference.
Aaron’s Acres is seeking applicants to help fill a handful of important and meaningful roles. The work is steady and the benefits are out of this world.
“It becomes about the experiences and getting to see the campers’ growth,” said Becky Miller, a summer group leader for Aaron’s Acres. “It just kind of turns into being there and growing a sense of pride in yourself. The amount of love shown at these camps is amazing. That’s what keeps counselors coming back for as long as they can.”
Located at 1861 Charter Lane, Suite 114, Lancaster, Aaron’s Acres is a nonprofit that works with individuals ages 5 to 21 with physical and mental disabilities. The organization is seeking counselors for its summer camp program. Specifically, Aaron’s Acres is looking for volunteer buddies age 13 and older, as well as counselors age 18 and up.
The nonprofit is hoping to add a total of 40 to 50 buddies and counselors for its summer camp, which will start its season in the middle of June.
“The best things these campers get is seeing (fellow campers) who are similar to themselves,” said Miller. “Individuals with disabilities do really well with routine, and they get to do all these activities. Just being in an environment that is accepting of their disabilities is important. They are put into an environment where they can do anything. When they come to camp, they feel at home.”
Aaron’s Acres conducts its summer camps at New Holland Community Memorial Park, 400 E. Jackson St., New Holland. The summer camps are broken down into three 10-day sessions on Mondays through Fridays from June 17 to 28, July 8
Concert to feature trumpet music

Becky Miller with one of last year’s campers
to 19 and July 22 to Aug. 2.
The camps feature daily activities such as swimming, crafts and fitness programs; off-site field trips; and therapies like music and equine.
“(The buddies and counselors are) mostly college students, but we also have kids who want to gain experience and people who have jobs with summers off,” said Miller. “If you’ve never gone into a summer camp program, it can be intimidating, but the amount of support that comes through the program is so comforting. It’s such a good learning experience and stepping stone. It’s such a good way to get a foot in the door. Just seeing how the world works through (the campers’) eyes is so rewarding.”
Because it adheres to a strict policy of a one-to-one or one-to-two counselor-to-camper ratio, Aaron’s Acres’ summer camps are staff driven. Last summer, Aaron’s Acres turned away 100 families with disabled individuals who applied for its summer camp programs because it lacked adequate numbers of staff members.
“We’re trying to give our campers an experience in a safe environment with the support they need,” said Miller. “The need is very great. We have so many families, and it’s not the same campers every year. Last year, we were nowhere close to having the staff to accommodate everyone on our list.”
For further information or to apply as a summer camp counselor or buddy, go to www.aaronsacres .org and click on the employment tab.

“It’s a really nice atmosphere,” Kernc continued. “There are tables surrounding the dance floor. People sit and listen. When the band starts, people start dancing. We play a mix of slow tunes and fast songs. The lights are down low. It’s a really nice venue overlooking the golf course.”
A nonprofit, the 20-piece Big, Big Jazz Band will play three 45-minute sets featuring swing, jazz combos and sounds of the big band era. There is an admission fee associated with the ball, but everyone is invited and Lancaster Country Club memberships are not required to attend.
“We do it for our patrons and followers,” said Kernc. “They’re just people from around Lancaster County who have followed the band for years. We have a pretty loyal following. Some I recognize and some I don’t. They’re just people who like the big band sound.”
The Big, Big Jazz Band is hoping to draw 150 to 200 attendees to the Beat the Winter Blahs Ball in order to raise $2,000 to $3,000 for the band’s operating expenses. Of the 10 fundraisers that the Big, Big Jazz Band will play in 2024, the Beat the Winter Blahs Ball is the only whose proceeds will go back to the band.
“The proceeds go towards sustaining the band,” said Kernc. “You’ve got to keep it running. This is the one job we do to raise funds so we can play for other people. We make a little money and it goes into the music.”
Kernc explained that the band’s other events raise money for fellow
“We help other charities in the Susquehanna Valley raise funds. We’re a human service agency that provides music,” he said.
Organized in 1968 as the Bob Troxell Big, Big Band, the Big, Big Jazz Band is made up of four trumpets, four trombones, five saxophones, a drum kit, a bass guitar and a piano. The band also features vocalist Mary Ann Garrett and is directed by Gary Peters. A host of other musicians serve as substitutes.
Troxell, who played trombone in the Penn State Blue Band while working his way through college, entertained a lifelong love of music and passed it on to the next generation through his work with jazz bands at Lancaster Bible College and local high schools. Troxell started the band as a way to give back to the local community, a mission that the Big, Big Jazz Band carries on today.
In 2002, the Bob Troxell Big, Big Jazz Band became the Big, Big Jazz Band.
“It’s a big band,” said Kernc, who plays lead trumpet. “We call it a ‘Big, Big Band,’ because it has a big sound. We didn’t want it to be called ‘the Big Band.’ We wanted something bigger and better.”
“We always strive to sound like one instrument,” added Kernc. “We all just love to play, and we’ve all been playing for years. Some are music teachers, some are music instructors, and many are lifetime musicians. We’re people who have had music be a part of our lives.”
