The Robindale Sunrise Safe Crossing, located on Route 501 (Lititz Pike), has been in place since Dec. 15, 2021. Pedestrians wishing to cross from either Robindale or Sunrise should push the button on the pole to activate yellow flashing lights, which will alert drivers going both directions for the next 25 seconds.
“Look both ways,” said Bill Sauers, engineer with Manheim Township. “Proceed with caution. If 25 seconds elapse and you haven’t had a chance to cross, press it again and wait for a break in the traffic.” Roy Baldwin, who has been working with the Nonmotorized Pathway Committee on similar projects since the mid-1990s, pointed out the care pedestrians must take when using the crossing. “We need
to caution people not to have the false impression that you can just cross the road,” he said. “You can’t do that. It’s not a stop light.” Sauers added that warning signs for drivers have been placed on both sides of the road and that signs will be installed advising pedestrians to look both ways. “It’s going to take time for people traveling this highway to adjust,” he said. Sauers said that the crossroad is a primary location for people going to and from Overlook Park. Matt Stopa, director of the Manheim Township Recreation and Park Planning Department, said the area has been an important crossing location, but not one that was easily made safer for pedestrians. “(Lititz Pike) is a state road,” he said, noting that PennDOT needed to approve the crossing. According to Sauers, the crossing was approved a few years ago, and it was designed and bid on by late summer of 2020. “It was delayed (nine months) mainly because of

the time to fabricate the poles,” explained Sauers, who added that construction began in the summer of 2021, with the final inspection by PennDOT toward the end of the year. Sauers said the township worked with TRG Traffic Consulting from York to get approval. He noted that construction costs were $63,500. According to Baldwin, the safe crossing is not the only project the Nonmotorized Pathway Committee - a group of volunteers, plus staff, planning, park and recreation, and public works representatives - has been working toward. “For a number of years, people have asked about mapping for pathways (in Manheim Township),” said Stopa. “We have talked about (creating) digital maps.” Working with GISinc, Stopa is using Esri mapping software to create a digital map of township parks and trails. “These features show the different pathways that are in (Manheim Township),” explained See Township pg 2

Greer holds a master’s degree in public policy from the Harvard Kennedy School, and he has worked in Rwanda, Cambodia, and Zimbabwe. He noted that satellite imagery is included to give a better view of terrain. The map will also include the official bike route. While the map will give area residents an easy way to identify and locate places to take part in outdoor activities, Stopa is not done. “There are things I want to do yet,” he said. “I also want to be able to add pictures of pathways, and I want (viewers) to be able to see the athletic fields and pavilions in the parks.” Stopa said the bulk of the work is done, and he hopes to

In 2021, to keep visitors and residents safe, Lititz canceled its Fire & Ice Festival and instead held the Lititz Ice Walk, which extended the event from a single weekend to several days and focused especially on the ice sculptures lining the streets. For 2022, the town will host what executive director of Venture Lititz Rebecca Branle calls a hybrid event. “A lot of people enjoyed taking their time (to view the ice sculptures) and coming back a few times (in 2021),” she said. This year, the Fire & Ice Festival will officially run from Friday, Feb. 18, to Monday, Feb. 28, and encompass a number of activities, including a ticketed preview party, a Kids Funderland, a sweet treats punch card, and a scavenger hunt. The launch party, called Winter’s Coolest Night Out, will be held on Thursday, Feb. 17, at 6 p.m. at Collusion Tap Works, 5 Juniper Lane, Lititz. It will include a live ice carving outside The Lititz Shirt Factory building where the Tap Works is located. “It will be a
really fun, interactive carving brought to us by Luthercare, the sponsor of the event,” said Branle, who noted that the sculpture will remain after the party. The party will also feature Lancaster-based fusion band the Inca Campers. “Every demographic will have fun with that (music),” noted Branle, who added that the ticket price will include a drink and light appetizers. More than 60 ice sculptures will be on display throughout the event. Among this year’s creations will be a unicorn and a kangaroo. The Nittany Lion will make a return appearance. “There will be something really beautiful in front of Lititz Mutual (on North Broad Street),” noted Branle. A special two-sided punch card will be distributed to local hotels through Discover Lancaster. One side will encourage visitors to attend area establishments to experience a special fire-and-ice-themed beverage. “We encourage (attendees) to take photos and tell us which was your favorite,” said Branle, who added that because organizers want families to enjoy the

A special day has been planned for children on Presidents Day. “Monday (Feb. 21) will be the Winter Funderland, which will be kid-focused,” said Branle. She noted the event will close West Main Street from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. “The Lancaster Science Factory’s interactive van will come and do fire and ice science fun,” said Branle, who added that the Lititz Fire Company will open part of its building to children in the case of extreme cold.
On Thursday, Feb. 24, from 2 to 6 p.m., a Farmer’s & Maker’s Market representing the talents of Lititz-area residents will be held at Brownstone Manor, 2 W. Orange St., Lititz. Due to COVID-19 precautions, United Zion Retirement Community’s (UZRC) annual Chocolate Stroll was not held in 2021. “February is often known as the month of love,” said Kris Wilson, director of advancement for Mt. Hope Nazarene Retirement Community in Manheim. While many associate that love with flowers, candy or other Valentine’s Day gifts, there’s a bigger love at work at Mt. Hope, Wilson stated. “It’s a time of remembering Christ’s love for us and the call to love others as Christ first loved us. In turn, we emphasize the importance of looking out for our neighbors, but the journey of love doesn’t stop there.” February, she notes, is also the month during which Random Acts of Kindness Week is commemorated, offering an opportunity to bless others with expressions of love. That makes February the perfect month for Mt. Hope to hold a sweetheart to-go banquet, Wilson noted. The curbside pickup meal will be offered on Saturday, Feb. 26, from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. in the parking lot of LCBC Manheim, 2392 Mount Joy

Road, Manheim. Each meal will include barbecue fire-grilled chicken, gourmet cheese potatoes, sweet and sour saucy green beans, applesauce, a dinner roll and butter and a dessert. Proceeds from the meal will support Mt. Hope, a 50-bed nonprofit nursing facility that provides care for seniors and disabled people regardless of their financial circumstances. Although Mt. Hope is often thought of as a senior residence, the facility cares for anyone in need, Wilson said, sharing the story of 48-year-old Chris Dickson. Dickson became ill in the spring of 2020, eventually receiving a diagnosis of a large tumor on his cervical spine. The tumor was a rare form of cancer of the central nervous system. After Dickson received 14 months of hospital care and hospice services, doctors suggested that Dickson move into a skilled nursing home for end-of-life care. Wilson recalled Dickson’s mother worrying about how to pay for his care and considering trying to care for him herself before contacting Mt. Hope. Dickson moved into Mt. Hope in May of 2021 and passed away peacefully on Oct. 19. Participating in the sweetheart togo banquet will help Mt. Hope continue to provide care for residents like Dickson. “It’s the heartfelt gifts that keep Mt. Hope going and able to provide a wonderful place for people

to call home,” Wilson stated. “Mt. Hope continues to step in and say, yes, when other doors close for people with situations like Chris Dickson’s story.” Preorders will be taken for meals and saved under the name provided when ordered.
