Girls Reach Developmental

All phases of development are important. But it seems that the stage between the third and eighth grades may be especially critical in the growth of young women.

That’s where Girls on the Run (GOTR) steps in and helps girls put their collective best foot forward.

GOTR’s mission is to help adolescent females become more social, more confident and more emotionally aware.

“We address the whole girl,” said Jennifer West, program director for GOTR of Lancaster. “Girls are facing so many critical decisions at this stage. We help girls with friendships, resolving conflicts, reaching goals, overcoming obstacles and asking for advice.”

“We hear girls say, ‘I’m not good enough. I’m not tall enough. I’m not smart enough,’” continued West. “We tell them, ‘No, you want to be yourself.’ We help girls find their star power. We help girls make good choices.”

West emphasized that GOTR is more than simply a running program, but an after-school, community program. “You can hop, jump and skip, as long as you’re moving forward,” she said.

GOTR of Lancaster conducts two 90-minute meetings each week for 10 weeks, during both the spring and fall seasons. Registration for the spring 2023 season will begin Wednesday, Feb. 15.

Meetings are conducted by volunteer coaches in every school district in Lancaster and Lebanon counties, as well as at churches and social organizations like the YMCA. Last spring, GOTR served 960 local residents, and in the fall, the program’s participants numbered around 560. This spring, GOTR of

One of the most popular local events of the winter season is back and better than ever.

Venture Lititz and Lititz Borough will proudly stage the 17th edition of their popular Fire and Ice outdoor winter carnival from Friday, Feb. 17, to Sunday, Feb. 26. The already vibrant streets of Main and Broad, as well as Lititz Springs Park, will explode with fun and games, vendors and energy.

“What makes Lititz, Lititz? What makes it so special?” said Rebecca Branle, executive director of Venture Lititz. “I think it’s people

that makes Lititz so special. Fire and Ice is about bringing people together. It’s to get people out, and we’re helping our small businesses. It gives our merchants a lift to spring. It’s about community and pride and people. Fire and Ice is a big event that turns the streets into galleries of art.”

Physically and metaphorically, fire and ice are represented by the 70 ice sculptures, the chili cook-off conducted by original sponsor Lititz Lions Club and a relatively new fire show featuring a display of pyrotechnics. But the carnival also features a Lititz town crawl, a photography show, scavenger hunts, food trucks and much more.

“It’s a regional event,” said Branle. “There’s a family-friendly aspect to it. My favorite part is watching kids’ faces, just seeing what wows them. We’re highlighting everything we want folks to know about us.”

Visitors come, not only from Lancaster County, but also from York County, Lebanon County, Philadelphia and out of state. This year, Fire and Ice is expecting crowds to number over 50,000 throughout its

duration.

“It’s important because winter can be a time when we get separated from one another,” said Branle. “Some of us experience the winter blues. Fire and Ice is a form of economic development that’s about bringing people together at what is traditionally a slow time for local businesses.”

Fire and Ice’s origin can be traced to the mid-2000s and the Lititz Lions Club’s chili cook-off. While much has changed about the festival over time, the one constant that has remained is the commitment of the community required to stage Fire and Ice.

“It was a community event from the beginning and a fundraising event for the Lions Club,” said Branle. “It’s changed over time. We start planning the event in July, and nothing happens without the support of our businesses. This couldn’t happen if community members didn’t step up. It’s a lot of hours and a lot of volunteers donating their time.”

New Program Aims To Reduce Food Waste

Lancaster Central Market, 23 N. Market St., Lancaster, has launched the Kathleen L. Peck After Market program to reduce food waste, improve community health, and honor the memory of Peck. Designed to ensure nutritious food ends up on local tables, not in landfills, market standholders offer free goods that will expire before the next market day.

After Market is open to the public and operates on Tuesdays and Saturdays from 2:45 to 3:15 p.m. Shoppers are asked to browse the tables in a single-file line and take only three to five items at first. Shoppers may return to the

end of the line as often as they wish. After Market shoppers should bring their own bags, as none will be provided.

Before the pandemic, the Central Market Trust partnered with local nonprofits to pick up food donations directly from the market house. Due to staff constraints and varying donation amounts, Trust staff members sought other ways to reduce waste and bridge the gap to ensure that food flowing into the Central Market makes it onto kitchen tables.

The family of Peck helped launch After Market in her memory after she passed away

suddenly in 2022. Mike Peck, Kathy’s husband, noted that his family has bought much of its food from Central Market.

Girls On The Run

Lancaster is shooting for 1,100 participants, 80 teams and 450 volunteer coaches.

“We’re really dependent on finding people with love for Girls on the Run,” said West.

GOTR’s program separates its girls into two groups by age. The course focuses on participants learning about themselves first, then learning about cooperation and finally learning about their communities.

This year’s spring GOTR program will be capped on Saturday, May 20, at Franklin & Marshall College with its annual 5K run, which is expected to draw 3,000 participants, running buddies, coaches and spectators.

“We started out with 25 girls and two teams,” said West. “It’s 14 years later, and we feel like Girls on the Run has become a household

name.”

Lancaster is one of 200 councils of the international GOTR program. In 2017, GOTR of Lancaster incorporated Lebanon County as part of its reach.

Since its inception, GOTR of Lancaster has served nearly 19,000 participants.

“Now we have girls who have graduated from college coming back and they’re like a bridge to the older people,” said West. “We’re a lot more sure of ourselves. We know it’s successful. We know it’s impactful. We know it’s making a difference in people’s lives.”

To register for GOTR’s spring session, visit www.gotrlancaster.org, email jwest@gotrlancaster.org or call 717-869-5655. There is a fee to register, based on income.

Musical Togetherness - LMS To Stage “Annie”

“We picked our shows this year to celebrate the unification of the campuses,” said Dean Sauder, director of the upcoming Lancaster Mennonite School (LMS) production of “Annie.” LMS recently consolidated its Locust Grove and New Danville elementary schools with the high school and middle schools at its Route 30 location, and students from all schools will take part in the play. The performance of the Tony Awardwinning show will be Dean’s last time helming a musical production for the school.

“Annie,” the Broadway version first staged in 1977, will be presented in the High Fine Arts Center, 2176 Lincoln Highway East, Lancaster, on Thursday, Friday, and Saturday, Feb. 16, 17, and 18, at 7 p.m. and on Sunday, Feb. 19, at 3 p.m. The Feb. 16 show will be staged on a pay-whatyou-will basis. All shows will be discounted for students. The Feb. 18 show will offer American Sign Language interpretation.

“Annie” is based on the Depression-era comic strip

“Little Orphan Annie” by Harold Gray. The story follows the title character on her journey from a Lower East Side orphanage in New York to a mansion on Fifth Avenue. The show includes the wellknown tunes “It’s the HardKnock Life,” “Tomorrow,” and “You’re Never Fully Dressed Without a Smile,” plus five songs not included in the movie versions. The musical was last produced at LMS in 2005, when it was directed by John Miller. Dean noted that “Annie” is a personal favorite, having been the first show he ever saw on Broadway. He added that while many of the students knew the name of the show, only a few had seen the movie versions.

Dean said the show, which has a large cast of more than 40 members - including 18 elementary- and middleschoolers - is not without its challenges. Ignoring the W.C. Fields admonition to “never work with children or animals,” Dean pointed out that the show has both. However, for the title role, Dean has chosen an experienced actress in diminutive high school senior Julie Eshenauer-

Rivera. “It’s nice to have someone mature who understands theater to bring the character to life,” said Dean. Main players and supporting leads include Caleb Metzler as Oliver Warbucks, Julia Fisher as Miss Hannigan, Mara Carlson as Grace Farrell, Micah Sauder as Rooster Hannigan, Eli Heinsey as Lily St. Regis, Isaac Greenleaf as both Franklin Delano Roosevelt and Bundles McCloskey, Kay Beidler as Bert Healy, and Sim Spurrier as Drake.

Dean noted that other challenges include acquiring 1930s-era props, such as a period wheelchair for Roosevelt, but that overall the show is enjoyable to produce. “It’s a show that’s fun for everybody, including the ensemble,” he said. “(The kids) are loving this.” Tickets, which are necessary to attend, may be purchased at www.lancaster mennonite.org/events/lmh -musical/ or by calling the box office at 717-740-2456.

Operation HOPE Recognizes Fulton Bank

Operation HOPE recently recognized Fulton Bank, a subsidiary of Fulton Financial Corporation, for providing nearly $1 billion in loans to low- and moderate-income homebuyers over the past seven years.

The announcement was made by John Hope Bryant, founder, chairman and CEO of Operation HOPE, during Operation HOPE’s ninth annual HOPE Global Forums in Atlanta in December 2022. The event included nearly 5,000 delegates and attained more than 1 million views online. The HOPE Global Forum is dedicated to expanding financial inclusion for everyone.

In 2016, Fulton Bank began collaborating with Operation HOPE, a nonprofit focused on financial literacy and economic inclusion. Fulton Bank participates in the Closing Cost Assistance Program, which provides grants to buyers to help with the up-front costs of purchasing

Fulton Bank has helped facilitate more than $968 million in loans to more than 5,700 homebuyers under the Closing Cost Assistance Program, and that cumulative total is on track to hit $1 billion in loans in 2023. In addition to homebuyer loans, the bank has donated more than $8 million in grants to make purchasing a home more affordable for low and moderate-income buyers.

Giant’s Feeding School Kids Initiative Returns

For the third year in a row, the Giant Company has announced the launch of its Feeding School Kids initiative and its $250,000 commitment to kick off the program. From now through Tuesday, Feb. 28, customers at Giant, Martin’s and Giant Heirloom Market stores are invited to round up their grocery purchases to the nearest dollar or convert their CHOICE points into a donation to support public school district food programs.

Giant launched the Feeding School Kids program in 2021 to address the issue of childhood

hunger throughout local public school communities. Together with its customers, Giant has raised more than $4.8 million to date to help ensure no child goes hungry at school or at home.

Through the Feeding School Kids initiative, school districts have been able to support meal programs and address food insecurity through activities ranging from supplying backpacks with weekend food to clearing outstanding student lunch debt to building on-campus food pantries. School districts in Pennsylvania have benefited from the program.
