But no one is an island, not even an Eagle Scout. Grayson Rotz, a 16-yearold sophomore at Manheim Township High School, recently earned the rank of Eagle Scout. Grayson is one of 60 active members of Troop 99, which See Eagle Scout pg 2

Help Manheim Township help you As the saying goes, “If you fail to plan, you plan to fail.” Manheim Township is aiming to set itself up for success by making a plan - a comprehensive plan, that is - and residents are invited to share input. Township is urging its residents to complete a survey that will help shape the direction of the locale for the short term, as well as for years to come. “We have a responsibility for the health and well-being of our residents,” said Anthony Vallone, Manheim Township’s new community development manager. “It’s about common sense and finding solutions that have common-sense answers. The township residents want the township to be successful, and they care about its history. This is one of the few
opportunities they have to have a voice, to speak their minds. We want to make sure we don’t squander that opportunity. The comprehensive plan ends up taking all these opinions and rolling them into it.” The survey poses eight broad questions about the current state of Manheim Township and the municipality’s future, and it takes about five minutes to complete. T he sur vey began Jan. 10 and will run through Thursday, Feb. 29. “Where we’re headed is a balance between development and preservation of our open spaces and our agricultural spaces,” said Vallone. “As we’re building out, we need to be mindful of where all this stuff goes. Where are the areas we need
to be mindful of development? We have transportation concerns as well.” Results of the survey will help shape the township’s comprehensive plan, which is expected to be updated around the middle of 2025. The last time the comprehensive plan was updated was March of 2010. “It’s an update, not an overhaul,” explained Vallone. “The survey will help us. We have to be guided on what needs to be updated. Some parts of the comprehensive plan may need to be updated; some may not. ... It gives residents an opportunity to inform us how they want their township to be, in many different ways.” Manheim Township received 600 early responses when the survey was first introduced in early January. “I’d be happy with

Eagle Scout from pg 1 is affiliated with Highland Presbyterian Church, 500 E. Roseville Road, Lancaster. “You can’t do it alone,” said Grayson. “But you can’t rely on others to do it for you. It’s Boy Scouts. It’s not Dad Scouts. You’ve got to be the one who wants it, while getting help from others. People will be there to help you.” After finishing his Eagle Scout project in April of 2023, Grayson officially received the prestigious award at a Troop 99 ceremony in October. But his journey to becoming an Eagle Scout - one marked by triumphs and uncertainty - took four and a half years to complete. Grayson experienced a “lightbulb moment” while attending a Boy Scout summer camp when he was 12. “I just fell in love with it,” said Grayson. “I decided I was going to work myself to Eagle Scout right then and there. From age 12 to 16, Boy Scouts has been one of the biggest influences in my life. I do try to live by the laws of Scouting - be a good person, take care of yourself and help others. My attitude toward things has helped me become the person I am. And I made a bunch of fond memories.” After earning 26 merit badges in disciplines like first aid, map reading, finger printing, water rescue, citizenship, cooking and camping, personal management, family life, personal fitness and crime preparedness, Grayson planned his Eagle Scout project. The project

involved building a gaga pit at Landis Woods Park. Gaga ball is a game that’s sort of a cross between handball and dodgeball, played in an octagon-shaped pit. “As Grayson has progressed over the last three or four years, he’s grown in his leadership abilities and sense of self,” said Eric Rotz, Grayson’s dad. “He’s very thorough in what he says. Grayson is very good in helping others.” Grayson was 7 years old when he began his Scouting career as a Cub Scout in Pack 93. He progressed from Scout to Tenderfoot, then Second Class, First Class, Star, Life and finally Eagle. “You always want to strive to get to the next rank,” said Grayson. “I knew I wanted to get my Eagle, but I wasn’t sure what that entailed.” In addition to being versatile, Grayson is well rounded. He’s worked as a lifeguard and swim instructor and a soccer referee; he’s involved at his church, in the youth group and as a Sunday school teacher; and he also donates blood to the American Red Cross. “A lot of my life is spent around younger kids, teaching and mentoring,” said Grayson. “I have a couple ideas about what I want to do after high school. I want to be the manager at my pool someday, maybe when I’m around 19. I either want to go to Stevens trade school (Thaddeus Stevens College of Technology) or maybe go to college and pursue something in business or finance.”

Piercing Word will present “Stewardship” and “Passion: The Musical” on Friday, Feb. 16, at 7 p.m.; Saturday, Feb. 17, at 3 p.m. and 7 p.m.; and Sunday, Feb. 18, at 3 p.m. The stage per formance is expected to take 90 minutes to present. Admission will be handled on a pay-as-you-will basis. “The beauty of the music and the truth of the words create a powerful piece,” said House, adding that the performance should impact everyone present, whether they regularly attend church or not. Framed as a board game, “Stewardship” features three performers and focuses on the importance of making good use of everything God has given us. “‘Stewardship’ is a fun, fastpaced commentary on how to use our God-given resources, presented in the form of a board game,” said House. “It’s like Monopoly on stage. There are two players and a game master.” “The game master is teaching them how to play the game, and everyone gets to see how things unfold,” continued House. “We see evidence of a lack of stewardship in our lives on a regular basis, and for whatever the reasons, we
end up not fulfilling God’s call. He’s entrusted us with these talents, and He’s calling us to use them for a higher purpose. We can multiply these resources in so many ways.” “Passion: The Musical” recounts the events preceding and immediately following the death of Jesus Christ. “‘Passion: The Musical’ is presented in a modern, urban style and depicts the Last Supper, the crucifixion and the resurrection of Jesus, compiled from all four Gospels,” House said. “It’s a really powerful presentation of the events of Holy Week.” Piercing Word’s performances generally draw about 100 spectators. “A lot of our audience is made up of people from Lancaster who have been with us on our journey,” said House. “But there are still a lot of people from Lancaster County who haven’t experienced Scripture performed live on a stage.” Piercing Word employs four staff members full time and works with 70 contracted performers. House founded Piercing Word in 2007 in Houston, and the organization became a full-time ministry six years later. In 2023, Piercing Word presented Scripture performances at churches, colleges, special events and conferences in 15 states. LancasterHistory will celebrate Presidents Day, Monday, Feb. 19, with a story time and special tours. The story time will begin at 10 a.m. and will take place indoors. Children will hear the story “If I Ran for President” by Catherine Stier with illustrations by Lynne Avril. They will then make “I Voted” badges and receive a visit from someone portraying the 15th president of the United States, James Buchanan. Children will have an opportunity to ask Buchanan questions.
The story time is free, but registration is required to ensure adequate supplies are available. This event is designed for children ages 2 to 6, but older and younger siblings or friends are welcome to attend. The suggested age range is 12 and under. LancasterHistory asks that at least one adult age 18 or older attend for every household. The special-subject tours, “James Buchanan: The One-Term President,” will be given at Wheatland on the hour, beginning at 10 a.m. and continuing until the last
tour at 3 p.m. The tour will explore the year 1859, when Buchanan sealed his fate as a one-term executive. Attendees will learn about Buchanan’s attempts to expand the nation, his struggle with corruption in the War Department, and more. Advance reservations are highly recommended as tours may sell out and walk-in tickets may not be available. Members will receive complimentary admission, but they should reserve their tickets in advance to guarantee the tour time of their choice.

The drop-in sessions are informal, informational, and conversational in nature to provide the community the opportunity to meet representatives from the MT School Board and discuss important topics related to MT schools.
