Amazing Accomplishment: MS Patient Completes Ironman Rec Center To Offer MS Challenge Training

Local Couple Honored By Seminary

“As a couple, we love sharing the gifts and talents the Lord has given both of us with others, especially the nonprofits we cherish,” said Beth Bostwick, speaking for herself and her husband, Bernie, about the recent Friends of Evangelical Seminary Servant Leader Corporate Partner Awards the couple received at the end of 2020. “We are humbled by this award,” continued Beth.

“(We) feel that there are so many business partners and collaborators who are worthy of this as well.”

In a normal year, the Bostwicks would have received their award when Evangelical Seminary, located in Myerstown, held its fall banquet, but 2020 was not a normal year. When the banquet was canceled due to COVID-19 restrictions, representatives of Evangelical Seminary traveled to the offices of the couple’s businesses,

Beth was introduced to Evangelical Seminary more than a decade ago by then seminary president Michael Sigmund. Since then, Beth and her team at Masterpiece Marketing have worked with school leaders, including current president Tony Blair, on rebranding, developing a new logo, and designing the annual report, among other projects.

“I truly believe that my greatest joy in life, and my greatest responsibility, is to be the best wife and mom I can be,” said Annie Friedrichs, a member of the Change of Pace (COP) leadership team.

COP is a seasonal Bible study program sponsored by Friendship Foundation, Inc. “COP has given us a great opportunity to come together and open God’s Word to gain the wisdom and understanding He offers,” continued Friedrichs.

Ironman from pg 1 years. Instead, he began researching resources and came across the book “David’s Goliath” by David Lyons, which outlines the MS Fitness Challenge.

Stephen connected with Lyons, who founded the MS Fitness Challenge organization, and Lyons began coaching Stephen. He also made dietary recommendations. As the two men became acquainted, Lyons felt that Stephen would be an asset to the organization.

“I jumped aboard,” said Stephen who began studying for his personal trainer license, which he received from the National Federation of Personal Trainers in March of 2019.

Stephen’s health slowly improved, and he began thinking about doing a full Ironman triathlon. He met a former Navy SEAL, with whom he shared his Ironman dream. “I didn’t know how to swim, so once a week he got in the pool with me and taught me to swim,” said Stephen. Soon a 3-mile

Weeks before Stephen was to complete his full Ironman, he learned that COVID-19 restrictions had forced organizers to cancel.

“MS is a time bomb,” said Stephen. “You never know when the next relapse will come.” Uncomfortable with waiting for the 2021 event, Stephen found a virtual platform that allowed him to realize his goal with help from his long-distance swimming coach, Louise Hyder-Darlington, and his father, who drove along on the bicycle route and biked beside his son during the run.

Glaus now works with individuals one-on-one to implement the MS Fitness Challenge. “If someone has lower leg weakness, we have the participant hold each contraction for six seconds,” explained Glaus. “You are giving the brain the opportunity to develop a new pathway to do the same movement.” He also works with clients on nutrition, which he noted is essential to succesfully living with MS. East Hempfield Township Police Department (PD) has participated in the Bleed Blue Challenge since the initiative’s inception. “We want to support Penn Medicine LG Health in its quest to get donations, especially in a pandemic year,” explained Lt. Jen Brubaker. “The blood stays local. It’s a way to give back to the community.”

The Bleed Blue Challenge is a program of the Penn Medicine Lancaster General Health (LG Health) Blood Donor Center and is running from Jan. 4 to Friday, Jan. 29. During the initiative, participating police departments are encouraging members of their staffs and their communities to give blood at LG Health blood drives and at the center, 2104 Harrisburg Pike, Suite 202, Lancaster.

Blood donor recruiter Anita Blizzard introduced the Bleed Blue Challenge with four PDs two years ago.

It has grown to include 15 PDs this year: Manheim Township, East Hempfield, East Lampeter, Columbia Borough, Millersville Borough, Millersville University, Lancaster City, Lititz Borough, West Hempfield, Northwest Regional, Mount Joy Borough, Pequea Township, Quarryville Borough, Strasburg Borough, and

Pennsylvania State Police, Troop J. A total of 80 units were received during the challenge in 2020, with Millersville University PD receiving credit and a plaque for the most donors.

LG Health aims to keep 200 units in stock at all times, Blizzard noted. “What they did last year was really good. With more police stations involved, you’d assume that you’d do even better (this year),” she said.

Brubaker and other police officers planned to donate blood during the Bleed Blue Blood Drive on National Law Enforcement Day, Jan. 7.

“Our first responders and police are great leaders in caring for our community.

This effort is one more contribution they are willing to make,” said LG Health director of laboratory operations Brian Stambaugh.

an autoimmune disease that causes nerve damage and interferes with communication from the brain to the body. In the fall of 2020, he completed a virtual Ironman - swimming 2.4 miles, cycling 112 miles from Reading to Marietta, and running 26.2 miles.

Stephen’s journey with MS began in July 2018. At the age of 27, the Elizabethtown native was working in his dream job as a drone salesman in California. “On a business trip to Japan, my left foot went completely numb,” he recalled. Three weeks later, Stephen had lost the ability to walk unaided, and he was dealing with other complications.

Realizing his life would change dramatically, Stephen left his job in California, and he and his wife, Nikki, returned to Elizabethtown.

who are 5 years old through early 6 at the start of the school year. The program is still activity-oriented, but more emphasis is placed on paper-and-pencil activities and structured seat work. The student notebook is expanded and built upon as a tool for scholarship. The Writing Road to Reading literacy program is introduced at this level. Students expand their phonetic awareness and segmentation in preparation of beginning to read; many children learn to read before completing kindergarten.

In addition to kindergarten, Dayspring Christian Academy offers preschool programs for children who are 3 by Sept. 1.

Preschool is held on Tuesdays and Thursdays from 8:30 to 11 a.m.

These programs offer an introduction to the alphabet as students learn a Bible hero for each letter of the alphabet, culminating with a Bible Character Day complete with costumes. Age-appropriate history, science, literature, and math lessons are woven together and rooted in God’s Word. Guided free play incorporates principles of self-government, order, and unity. The Lancaster Symphony Orchestra (LSO) will begin a new partnership with the Carnegie Hall Link Up Program for children, The Orchestra Rocks. The program is open to students in grades three through five, as well as homeschooled students of all ages. Kevin Greene’s relatives are spread throughout two countries. He was born in British Columbia, then his family moved to Wilmington, Del., when he was 5.

Kevin’s mother’s family lives in Manitoba, and his father’s sister lives near Niagara Falls. Kevin and his wife, Alisha, moved to Ephrata five years ago.

Lancaster County, with its genealogical roots stretching back three centuries for some people, is quite different than Kevin’s experience.

“Family connections in Lancaster are a lot,” Kevin commented. “(As a newcomer, I) have to make those connections in other ways.”

Making connections forging relationships among people and between God and people - is the mission of ConnectUs Church, which Kevin recently founded. his country in the Air Force.

Recognizing the importance of sharing Christ with those in the armed services, he is especially impressed with the seminary’s tuition-free Master of Divinity program degree for military chaplain candidates. Bernie also noted the significance of the school’s work to bring the community into conversation through its Faith in the Marketplace breakfast series, which was held regularly prior to COVID-19 restrictions. The program features speakers who discuss “how to let your light shine for Christ in a secular business.”

“It’s a very meaningful way to connect,” noted Bernie.

Dayspring Christian Academy invites families with soonto-be preschoolers, prekindergartners, and kindergartners to attend an open house on Thursday, Feb. 11, at 10 a.m. at the school, 120 College Ave., Mountville.

The kindergarten open house will feature a Winnie the Pooh Valentine’s Day party that will focus on Proverbs 17:17a. Parents will meet with teachers and learn about the Principle Approach, which is a method of thinking and living

by God’s truth and which is the method of education used at Dayspring. Michael Myers, headmaster, noted that children learned this way during the Colonial and founding periods in America.

Dayspring offers two distinct kindergarten programs.

Children begin learning about a variety of subjects, including science, history, and geography, and they begin reasoning from the Bible, noted Myers.

God is viewed as the author of all subjects. Both kindergarten classes use field studies to bring to life what children learn in the classroom.

The prekindergarten program is appropriate for children who are 4 years old or who have just turned 5 at the start of the school year. The program is activity-oriented while introducing the structure and rigors of a formal classroom setting. As a first step into scholarship, the student notebook is introduced, and students begin formal steps toward reading through the Sound Sensible program.

Students develop early math skills, learn a Bible verse for each letter of the alphabet, and delve into literature as they study the life of Beatrix Potter. They explore music, art, and the environment around them, and they learn to experience the wonder of creation.

ConnectUs Church has been about two years in the making. Kevin completed a church planting residency at Life Church Lancaster, and with the support of people he met while earning a digital communications degree from Lebanon Valley College, several Life Church members, and Alisha’s parents, who moved to Lancaster from Pittsburgh, he created ConnectUs Church, an independent congregation that is part of Converge. The Northeast Collaborative, which aims to remedy the isolation of leaders from resources and teammates, has helped with funding, accountability, and partnerships.

“COVID has thrown a wrench in (the launch),” Kevin remarked. “There’s no book on how to start a church in a pandemic.”

COVID-19 delayed the start of worship services, but for the last month, ConnectUs has been meeting at Reel Cinemas, 1500 Christopher Place, Lancaster, on Sundays from 9 a.m. to noon, with gatherings beginning at 10 a.m. The adults gather for worship in one theater, and children meet in another one. A nursery is located in a private hallway. A formal grand opening will be held at 10 a.m. on Sunday, Jan. 31.

Kevin will deliver a message titled “Meet Jesus: When Real People Meet the Real Jesus.” During the following four weeks, the sermons will discuss how listeners can connect to God’s next steps for their lives.

Kevin described his preaching style as relevant and biblical. “I like to preach to everyone in the room,” he said. “I explain the Bible in a relevant, practical way that will make an impact on your life.”

Safe Communities Plans Retreat Safe Communites will hold a “Journey With Tamar” retreat for adult survivors of child sexual abuse on Saturday, Feb. 6, from 8:30 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. at Neffsville Mennonite Church, 2371 Lititz Pike, Lancaster.

Attendees will discuss the Old Testament story of Tamar, daughter of King David, and what the story tells them about healing, resilience, and hope. Through art, journaling, and discussion, participants will explore how their stories relate to surviving and resilience. The retreat will be facilitated by Andrea Stoner Leaman, MSW, program manager for Safe Communities, and Linda Crockett, director of Safe Communities.

Due to COVID-19 precautions, the retreat will be held in a large meeting hall. All participants must wear a face

covering at all times and maintain social distance.

Attendance is limited to 20 persons.

Registration is required by Sunday, Jan. 31. There is no cost for this retreat due to funding from the LMC Legacy Foundation.
