Could the Lancaster Airport be one of the most heavily utilized airports in Pennsylvania, as well as one of the state’s most underutilized? Now, that may sound like a contradiction, but it very much tells the story of the local transportation hub.

One of 13 public airports in Pennsylvania, Lancaster Airport serves as a gateway for the rich business climate that flourishes in central Pennsylvania. But when it comes to commercial traffic, sometimes local flyers overlook Lancaster Airport as

part of their travel plans.

Consider this: Lancaster Airport offers about five commercial flights per day, about 30 a week, many of which serve as connecting flights to destinations like New York; Boston; W ashington, D.C.; and Florida through larger commercial airports. But Lancaster Airport stages nearly 90,000 private or corporate flights each year.

Mainly because of that large number of business flights, Lancaster Airport ranks third in the state - based on number of flights,

not number of passengers - behind only Philadelphia and Pittsburgh international airports.

“I’ve heard that the community wants to go more places from the airport,” said Lancaster Airport Authority director Ed Foster. “I think what happens is that simply because we don’t have large jets come in here, people don’t associate it (commercial travel) with Lancaster. When people search for flights, they tend to book larger airports. Sometimes it may be cheaper, but we’re close and convenient and we

offer free parking here. We’re trying to make it more attractive to fly out of here.”

Situated on 850 acres of land east of Route 501 at 500 Airport Road, just north of Neffsville, the Lancaster Airport features an air traffic control tower, hangars and two paved runways, including a 6,934foot-long, 150-foot-wide runway.

The Lancaster Airport Authority employs 29 local residents as fuelers, firefighters and managers. But the other 24 on-site businesses employ another 230 citizens.

Manheim Township’s fire rescue program is headed in a new direction - a more professional one.

At the board of commissioners’ public meeting on Jan. 9, Manheim Township Fire Rescue (MTFR) introduced its firstever group of career fire lieutenants - Justin Gernert, Richard Flinn, Daniel Braden and Matthew Barnes. Subsequently, Gernert has been assigned to shift A at Engine 201, Southern Manheim Township station; Flinn has been assigned to shift B; Braden has been assigned to shift C; and Barnes has been assigned to shift D.

LBC Names Reed Alumnus Of The Year

Lancaster Bible College | Capital Seminary & Graduate School has named Calvin Reed the 2022 Alumnus of the Year. Reed, who earned his bachelor’s degree in pastoral studies from LBC in 1978, has served in ministry for 40 years.

After graduating from LBC, Reed went on to earn a Master of Divinity and also took Doctor of Ministry courses at Biblical Theological Seminary, now Missio Seminary, in Philadelphia. Reed also previously served as chairman of the board at Biblical Theological Seminary. He is making plans for retirement after four decades at

Lebanon Bible Fellowship Church (LBFC).

After completing his graduate work, Reed began serving within Bible Fellowship Church, first in Reading, then in Lebanon. Under Reed’s longtime leadership, LBFC is “committed to equipping the saints and reaching the lost with the Gospel so that men and women can become committed disciples of Jesus Christ, in fellowship with God and one another.”

As the senior pastor at LBFC, Reed works with two LBC alumni on the pastoral staff, and multiple LBC alumni and current students call LBFC their church home.

W hile at LBC, Reed served as the Student Council chaplain for a year as well as the junior class chaplain. He participated in choir and Wayfarers, a traveling singing

group of about eight students. He was also part of the Pastoral Interest Fellowship for three years, led tours for prospective students through the Student Service Corps and was a student representative on the Middle States Commission on Higher Education team

when the college was working toward accreditation.

Calvin and his wife, Bonnie, have three daughters and three sons-in-law, all of whom attended or graduated from LBC | Capital. He also credits LBC Bible and theology professor Harold Kime for helping to prepare him for his time in ministry. At LBC, Reed shared, he was taught how to formulate argumentative outlines of Scripture, which he still uses in his preparation for preaching.

Over his ministry, Reed taught Sunday school and preached on both Sunday mornings and evenings on a regular basis. It is estimated that he has prepared and delivered over 5,000 messages and lessons. In addition, he has done extensive studies in the area of expository preaching.

An LBC Charger athletics fan, Reed enjoys attending LBC volleyball and basketball games to support the students in his congregation. He described himself as a lifelong learner and said he hopes to teach in retirement.

The promotion of the career fire lieutenants represents the culmination of a 10year plan instituted by former Fire Chief Rick Kane, designed to move Manheim Township from an all-volunteer fire-rescue program to one better capable of serving the community on a 24/7 basis. The new career lieutenants’ duties will include company-level supervision and the overseeing of day-today operations of the four inservice fire stations, including leading, guiding and directing fire rescue personnel.

“Over the last 20 years, we have seen the fire service take on a more professional role when speaking to certification, credentialing and

higher educational standards,” said current MTFR Chief Scott Little.

Little conducted an internal civil services promotional exam for the purpose of elevating staff to the rank of fire lieutenant. The successful candidates exhibited a combination of education, training and experience.

“Their work is just beginning as fire service leaders,” said Little. “They will be empowered to lead, mentor and coach our talented workforce, and help us develop the future leaders of MTFR. This is a historical moment for Manheim Township, and I’m proud of the work everyone has done to see this day come to fruition.”

PeoplesBank recently donated $50,000 to the Y Community Development Corporation, which is part of the YMCA of the Roses’ community development work to lift up local neighborhoods through projects ranging from establishing affordable housing to improving public safety infrastructure.

PeoplesBank is a key partner of the Y Community Development Corporation and the YMCA, with this year being the fourth year of a five-year commitment in the state’s Neighborhood Assistance Program. Through the program, millions of dollars have gone toward improving the quality of life of thousands of individuals, youths and families.

The YMCA and its partners have transformed blighted properties into low-income housing; installed and maintained streetlights; implemented security camera systems, which have been used to assist law enforcement; maintained the appearance of local neighborhoods through façade improvements; and been part of ongoing street

sweeping efforts.

To learn more about the YMCA’s community development work, contact Joe Kirkenir at jkirkenir@roses ymca.org.

Established in November of 2021, the YMCA of the Roses is the result of a merger between the YMCA of York and York County and the Lan-

Lancaster Airport

It is estimated that the Lancaster Airport helps generate $50 million a year for the local economy.

“Our mission is very simple: It’s to support local businesses and introduce them to an international and global market,” said Foster. “I think the community respects the airport. We get zero complaints about noise. We’re trying to be good neighbors. We have a lot of activity, but it’s not an annoyance.”

The airport was dedicated as Lancaster Municipal Airport on Aug. 17, 1935. Fourteen years later, the Lancaster Airport was enlarged and modernized to

include night aviation.

Since then, the facility has undergone a number of renovation and improvement projects, which include current efforts to repave the runways and add additional hangars.

“ We’re building hangars as fast as we can,” said Foster. “ We’re a community airport. We’re here for the community. We wouldn’t be here if the community didn’t need it. We want the community to use the airport. You can get to anywhere in the world from here.”

For additional information about the Lancaster Airport, go to https://lancasterair port.com/.
