SCHOOL TOURS

Lancaster Mennonite will host open house events at four of its campuses, including Lancaster, Locust Grove, New Danville, and Hershey. The events will be held from 5:30 to 7:30 p.m. on Thursday, Jan. 24.

Servant Stage will kick off the new year with concert titled “A Million Dreams: Songs of Inspiration.” The original revue will showcase vocals, tight harmonies, and original arrangements of a wide variety of uplifting songs, ranging from Broadway and pop tunes to sacred songs and spirituals.

“It’s a diverse program, but each song has an encouraging or inspirational theme,” said Servant Stage executive director Johnathan Bauer. “This is a great show to beat the winter blues.

The arrangements, vocals, and harmonies are just exquisite, and the costumes are gorgeous.”

The cast includes Lancaster performers Ric Zimmerman, Sarah Poague, and Kat Prickett as featured vocalists, with Kayla Klase as female vocalist - swing.

Zimmerman directed the vocals, with original arrangements and musical

direction from Andy Roberts. Roberts and Scott Williams take turns as accompanist for the show, which is directed

by Servant Stage’s artistic director, Wally Calderon.

“Audiences will love the amazing vocal blend of the trio, as well as the individuality of each singer,” said Prickett. “Finding voices that blend so tightly is not an easy task. The best part is that the three of us are actually friends; we all care very much about each other, and I think this will translate to the audience clearly and add another layer to the show.”

The show will tour to venues across Lancaster County with 30 performances through March, including a performance at Rissers Mennonite Church, 8360 Elizabethtown Road, Elizabethtown, at 7 p.m. on Sunday, Jan. 27. A freewill offering will be See Servant Stage pg 4

Room To Grow Aaron’s Acres Gears Up For Summer Camp Service Dog Program Moves To Larger Facility

Sully, the newest UDS Foundation service dog trainee, was named in honor of the yellow Labrador that served President George H. W. Bush. Sully is in need of a sponsor to fund the completion of his twoyear training before going to work helping to provide independence to a person with a disability.

When UDS Foundation moved from its previous home in Greenfield to 2270 Erin Court, Lancaster, the space available for the service dog program more than doubled. The new facility includes a kennel with space for 12 dogs, a cuddle room for puppies, and a large training room.

According to Lori Breece, UDS service dog program manager, 12 puppies per year are brought into the program, which takes several years to turn an eight-week-old ball of fluff into a dog capable of giving a person with a disability a chance for greater independence. In addition to serving individuals, many UDS dogs are being sent to schools where they provide student support. “Since we have been here (in See Service Dogs pg 6

Minnie was Lancaster County’s first (and only) female groundhog, thanks to the vision of the late Bob Myers, an eccentric, funloving Mount Joy businessman who hosted Minnie’s first Groundhog Day appearance in 2008.

After Myers died unexpectedly in July 2008, the festivities were put on hold the following February. But in 2010, Shonk, then the Chamber’s executive director, got permission from Myers’ widow, Sharon, to restart the quirky event. It has been held every year since, at times drawing up to 100 people, including families with children, according to Shonk.

For those readers who are still wondering: No, Minnie is not a flesh-and-blood groundhog; she’s a puppet that lives in a tree stump made of chicken wire and papier-mache. But some confusion is understandable. Take Carl Hackman Jr., Chamber president, who admitted, “It took me three years to figure out she wasn’t real.” (Oh, but her powers are real, very real indeed.)

So, what would the late Myers think of the event today?

“He’d love it,” answered Sharon.

“He would have probably had a parade,” added Shonk.

Kerry Meyers, Chamber coordinator, described it as “just a fun community event.”

“The amount of people that we have out here sometimes, it’s a lot of people for as cold as it is,” Meyers added. “Everyone’s usually in a good spirit. And the hats just keep getting funnier every year, and more of them.”

As in years past, hat-wearing fun-lovers will gather at the town clock starting at 6:45 a.m.

As the sun rises, lots of noise will be made to lure Minnie out of her tree trunk, with the hope that, unlike last year, she will predict an early spring.

Refreshments, including coffee, hot chocolate and cookies, will be provided by the Walter S. Ebersole American Legion Post 185 and a local business.

Boys from Cub Scout Pack 102 faced off in the annual Pinewood Derby event held on Jan. 12 at Grandview United Methodist Church in Lancaster. After a breakfast for Scouts and their families, the 40 Scouts gathered to race their gravity-powered cars down the track in the officially sanctioned Boys Scouts of America (BSA) racing competition. The winners of the Pinewood Derby may advance to regional and state finals as the season continues.

Pack 102’s overall top finishers were the Webelos Den’s Benjamin Koser in first place, the Bear Den’s Milo van Harskamp in second place, the Bear Den’s Zachary Miller in third place, and the Wolf Den’s Anders Braksator in fourth place. All four Scouts earned the chance to advance to the Harvest District Pinewood Derby.

The top derby car finishers within the dens were Connor Kipe in the Lion Den, Miles Detwiler in the Tiger Den, Rowan Bushong in the Wolf Den, Kai Detwiler in the Bear Den, Colin Baker-Herron in the Webelos Den, and Lex Pabon in the Arrow of Light Den. Brothers and sisters of Scouts competed in the sibling race.

Lucy van Harskamp won the sibling race.

In addition to recognition based on times, boys were honored in design-related categories such as Most Futuristic Car, Funniest Car, Most Patriotic Car, Best Paint Design, Most Unique Car, Most Realistic Car, and Kids’ Choice. Among the Scouts honored were Mason Sheaffer, Most Patriotic; Kyto Anderson, Most Original; Eli Newswanger, Shiniest Paint Job; and Henry Axford,

Mason Sheaffer’s car was named Most Patriotic at Pack 102’s Pinewood Derby.

Participation in the Pinewood Derby requires basic woodworking and engineering skills as well as creativity. Each child receives a block of wood, four nails, a set of wheels, and a set of rules.

After assembling their cars, the Scouts sand, decorate or paint the cars, and then weigh them prior to race day. The Pinewood Derby goal is to foster sportsmanship, good citizenship, personal achievement, and family understanding.

The Pinewood Derby began as an idea of one father in a California Cub Scout pack. By 1955, the event was part of the official Cub Scouting program and, while always optional, has become a key part of many Cub Scout packs’ annual programs.

School Plans Open House Events Lititz Christian School and Early Learning Center, 501 W. Lincoln Ave., Lititz, will host its annual open house events on Friday, Feb. 8, at 9 a.m. and on Tuesday, Feb. 12, at 7 p.m. Both events will include a brief welcome session followed by a tour of the facilities.

Lititz Christian Early Learning Center is a Keystone Stars 3 establishment, providing care and instruction to children ages 6 weeks through pre -kindergarten.

Founded in 1978, Lititz Christian School, a college preparatory school, aims to partner with Christian families to provide a

biblical, academic education that prepares students to honor Jesus Christ in scholarship, vocation, and lifestyle. Academics are provided for students in kindergarten through 12th grade. Club To Host Holocaust Survivor The World War II Oral History Club will meet on Tuesday, Jan. 29, at 7 p.m. at St. Anne’s Retirement Community, 3952 Columbia Ave., Columbia.

The club will welcome Lancaster County resident Rosette Lobel, a Holocaust survivor. Lobel was born in France and grew up under Hitler’s regime during the five-year Nazi occupation.

Torres-Calderon Barbara (Childs) and Rick Gerz recently celebrated their 50th anniversary. They attended a Christmas show at American Music Theatre and then enjoyed a dinner hosted by their children at a local restaurant.

LCDHH Sets Pancake Breakfast Lancaster Center of the Deaf and Hard of Hearing (LCDHH) will host a pancake breakfast on Saturday, Jan. 26, from 8 to 11 a.m. at Lancaster Deaf Mennonite Church. Buddies act as positive role models for campers under the supervision of the group leader.

Activities at camp include swimming every day, music therapy, therapeutic horseback riding, arts and crafts, group games, and sports. “The staff give 200 percent, and they always say they feel like they learn more than they feel the campers do,” Paskoff stated.

“They are really energetic, passionate people who will do whatever it takes to make (camp) an exceptional experience.”

“We take every moment, and even though you think of it as just camp, we’re working on socialization and other skills at all times,” added Paskoff.

Special activities, theme days, and community service are other significant aspects of camp.

Through the Aaron’s Acres Acts of Kindness Program (AAAOK), campers ages 13 to 21 have the chance to take part in community service projects such as running an Alex’s Lemonade Stand, playing bingo at Pleasant View Retirement Community and Danner Home, and having a car wash to raise funds to donate to a local nonprofit selected by the campers. Optional programs for parents are also offered during camp, ranging from guest speakers to pampering days with manicures, pedicures, and massages.

Aaron’s Acres has hosted its summer camp in Manheim since 2013. It merged its Dauphin County camp site with Manheim in 2017 and its Berks County site in 2018. Transportation to camp from Dauphin and Berks counties is available.

Paskoff noted that serving at Aaron’s Acres summer camp is great for undergraduate and graduate students studying subjects such as social work, special education, occupational therapy, and physical therapy, but the organization is also thrilled to have anyone with a heart for the campers.

“We love when people without those majors do it and get comfortable interacting with our campers,” added Paskoff. “It’s great hands-on experience for people who want hands-on experience, and they’re always supervised by professionals.”

In schools, dogs serve students with multiple disabilities, but they also serve in learning support classrooms. Kristy Smith, service dog program coordinator with UDS, said that dogs help with physical therapy or with fine motor skill issues, but they also aid students struggling with “the emotional aspects of school and life’s challenges.” Breece added that in some classrooms, time with a dog can be an incentive.

“For some of those students who are more challenged, it’s a calming influence, and they can work toward time with the dog as a reward,” she said.

Smith noted that currently

UDS dogs are present in Cocalico, Ephrata, Penn Manor, and Northern York County school districts.

“Each dog has a teacher or principal they go home with each night as the main handler, but we ask the schools to have a group of handlers,” she explained. Having a group of handlers allows a dog to work in multiple rooms.

Breece noted that having a dog in a school affects the atmosphere of the building. “It changes the lives of the faculty by changing the environment behind the cement walls,” she said. “We’d like to see more dogs in schools.”

A service dog’s training begins when it becomes part of the BARKS Prison Program, through which it is trained by an inmate at a Pennsylvania correctional facility. Puppies live with their inmate handlers around the clock, learning up to 50 commands. At the age of one year, the dogs return to Lancaster. For the next six

months, they live in a volunteer puppy home. “(The dogs) attend weekly outings and training sessions, and they will go out in the community so they can get socialization,” explained Breece.

At the age of 18 months, the dogs are sent to trainers for six months of specialty training.

Smith explained that many of the tasks the dogs perform are extensions of actions that come naturally to Labradors, such as retrieving and tugging, which make up 95 percent of the working service dog force. “A lot of the main job is retrieval from the floor or the counter or helping pay,” she said, adding that dogs tug open doors, carry bags that are too heavy (for their client), and remove articles of clothing, such as socks. “They push elevator buttons and handicappedaccessible buttons and turn light switches on and off.”

The newest puppy in the UDS program has been named Sully in honor of the yellow Labrador that served President George H. W. Bush and was photographed lying near his master’s casket during the funeral services in early December. UDS’ Sully is in need of a sponsor, which can be a local individual, organization, or business, to cover his twoyear training. Breece is also looking for a sponsor for the dog program’s new training room.

The Lancaster Muzzle Loading Rifle Association (LMLRA) will hold its 62nd annual gun show on Saturday and Sunday, Feb. 2 and 3, at the Lancaster Farm and Home Center, 1383 Arcadia Road, Lancaster.

Livestock Judging Team Places Ninth In Nation

Four students from Lancaster County achieved ninth place as a team in the 95th National 4-H Livestock Judging contest held from Nov. 8 to 14 in Louisville, Ky. The team placed ninth overall out of 33 teams with students ages 15 to 19 from across the country, as well as 10th in beef cattle and 11th in reasons. Members of the award-winning 2018 4-H Senior Livestock Judging Team included Emma Musser, Maddie Musser, Jacob Snavely, and Leah Welk.

Individually, Leah earned 15th overall for her scores at the national competition. Leah, the daughter of Don and Emily Welk of Strasburg, is a senior at Lampeter-Strasburg High School.

She has been involved in 4-H for eight years and is also a member of FFA. After graduation, Leah plans to attend Penn State University to major in agricultural science and minor in animal science or agricultural communications. Plus, she plans to get involved in livestock judging at the collegiate level.

“I learned I can compete at a higher level just like anyone else can,” said Leah. “It was one of the best experiences I’ve ever had.”

Earlier in the year, Leah set the goal of becoming an All-American, and achieving that was the highlight of her year.

Prior to the national competition, the team won the state championship at the Penn State 4-H Achievement Days held at University Park from July 23 to 25. The team placed second at the Keystone International Livestock Exposition on Oct. 5. Individually, Maddie earned fourth, Emma took eighth, and Leah

came in 13th. At the Southeast Regional Contest in Raleigh, N.C., on Oct. 27, the team came in fourth place, with Maddie taking sixth and Leah placing ninth.

Coached by Adam and Dani Zurin of Mount Joy and Johanna Rohrer of Manheim, the team began holding practices in January 2018 at the Farm and Home Center. Beginning in March, practices went from going over basic information in a classroom setting to visiting local farms for hands-on experience judging real animals. Each student was required to raise funds for the costs involved with traveling to and from competitions and did so by sending letters to family and friends as well as selling baskets at the Elizabethtown Fair and Manheim Farm Show.

“We bonded really well as a team, and it was a lot of fun being together,” remarked Emma when reflecting on the group’s success. Emma, the daughter of Greg and Jodi Musser of Elizabethtown, has been a 4-H member for eight years. She is a junior at Elizabethtown Area High School, where she is president of FFA and plays tennis. “It was cool getting to see livestock from different states and getting to meet people from different states,” said Emma, “and representing Lancaster County and getting to do it all with my sister.”

Emma’s sister Maddie has been a 4-H member for nine years and is currently a freshman at Penn State University, where she is studying agricultural business management. Maddie attributed the team’s outstanding year to the coaches, who volunteered countless hours instructing and practicing with the students. They also planned

“We knew going in that it would be a tough match-up with the first place team in the section,” said head coach Sean Burkhart. “While we battled for four quarters, we had some shots not fall in for us. Once you’re playing from behind, it can be too much to battle back.”

The Falcons took a 13-10 lead into the second quarter where they limited the Streaks to only four points, making it a 23-14 halftime edge. The Streaks weren’t able to shave much off that deficit in the third.

Bonano hit a pair of three-pointers during the turnaround. She finished with eight points.

“Alijiah hit a couple of big three’s for us,” said Burkhart. “Alexcia had 10 rebounds, many of which came on key stops we needed to make.”

MERCHANDISER - Manheim Township Edition SWIMMING & DIVING Township stayed undefeated in both boys’ and girls’ swimming and diving.

The boys’ team topped Cedar Crest 11657 while the girls’ team doubled up the Section One foe 121-62. The Streaks improved to 7-0 (3-0 league).

For a change, Streaks’ head coach Dan Graybill used 11 different swimmers for the three relay events in the boys’ meet, only utilizing Alonso Borrero more than once. Borrero, Elijah Gocotano, Luke Brandsema, and Jackson Prevost won the medley relay with a time of 1:44.18.

The 200 freestyle relay went to Borrero, Nick Boomsma, Jack Sheehan and Adrian Waplinger (1:35.38).

“I tried to mix them up because we have such a deep team this year,” Graybill said. “I like to keep them competitive and on their toes. They also get to have competition among each other to stay in top form.

“I had three good freestylers leading off in each of the relays,” he added.

Sergio Borrero, who’s Alonso’s older brother, Rob Perot, Aidan Buckwalter, and Brian Nguyen posted a 3:35.45 for second place in the 400 free relay.

Wylie-Thal anchored the 200 free relay team, helping Gabrielle Stramara, Faith Forman and Diana Lamont clock a winning 1:45.71.

“Backstroker Brynn Magrini and Sam Bennett, who did the butterfly, are a couple of freshmen on the medley relay team,” Graybill noted.

“Bennett also does the 50 freestyle for us.”

Magrini went on to win the 100 backstroke with a time of 1:04.46.

“Faith Forman did very well in her individual events,” said the coach.

Freshman Liz Perot notched a firstplace finish in the 500 free.

“That was her lifetime best,” Graybill said of Perot’s 5:27.36 time. “I know she was very happy about that.”

In the 100 fly, the Streaks claimed the top three spots with Stramara winning it in 1:01.26, Lamont (1:05.10) placing second and Bennett (1:06.82) taking third.

Speaking of second-place finishes, Pyott placed second in the 100 breaststroke with a time of 1:09.25.

“This was the first time Olivia didn’t win the 100 breaststroke,” Graybill said. “We knew it was going to go down to the wire with Krysta Welk from Cedar Crest. She was closing in on Welk, but lost by four-tenths of a second.”

Also winning was Shannon O’Hara, who took the diving competition with 135.5 points.

“Shannon has only had one loss this season,” Graybill pointed out.

AIR RIFLE Manheim Township handed Elizabethtown’s air rifle team its first loss of the season, defeating the Bears 496-494 on the road Thursday.

With each team featuring two shooters hitting the 100-point mark, it was the third, fourth and fifth scores on each team that were key.

Graham Wolf and Eli Torres registered the perfect scores for MT while Arabella Albino and Matt Risbon did so for E-town.

The Streaks’ Ethan Demler and Hana Musser each recorded a 99 while Hunter Modene tallied 98 on the day. Elizabethtown had only one person reach 99 while fifth place dipped to 97 for the Bears.

The win improved Township’s record to 7-2 while Elizabethtown fell to 8-1.

The Streaks had a near perfect team score earlier in the week, defeating Manheim Central 499-492. The four shooters reaching the century mark were Musser, Wolfe, Demler and Jada Bender. Torres recorded a 99.

WRESTLING The Blue Streaks kept pace with a tough Solanco squad in an L-L League wrestling match on Wednesday night, climbing to within six points at 30-24 and again within six points at 36-30 before the Mules pulled off a 42-30 victory.

The loss dropped Township to 0-6 while the Mules improved to 3-3.

The match opened with a Nate Neuhauser pin in the 285-pound weight class, giving Solanco a 6-0 lead. Micah Sams pulled the Streaks even with a pin at the 106, putting Dominic Flatt on his back 1:46 into the match.

The Mules pushed ahead with three consecutive pins leading up to the midway point of the match.

Township’s Cade Clancy halted the momentum with a pin at 145, followed by David Over’s pin at 152, cutting the deficit to 30-18.

The biggest game of the day was Drew Jaquith’s 687. He was consistent throughout, finishing with scores of 223, 216 and 248.

Second on the day was senior Jordan Schell (643) followed by Matt Iseman’s 634 tally. Chaz Eavenson finished with 600.

On Tuesday, Township came up short against Cedar Crest at Palmyra Lanes with the Falcons winning 5-2.

Kolby Bennett was the leader for Crest, starting with a 258 and finishing with a total of 695.

Canavan previously worked at School (LCCS) has announced that Patrick Canavan was named Tenth Presbyterian Church in as the new director of business Philadelphia, where he was administrator and director of education for 14 years. He directed operations, led personnel, managed facilities, and oversaw finances for the church, located in Center City in Philadelphia.

Canavan earned his degree from St. Joseph’s University. He and his wife have two children and two grandchildren.

LCCS is governed by a board of directors and managed by the head of school and administrative team. The school offers Christ-centered and interdenominational curricula for area children in preschool through 12th Patrick Canavan grade.

Grandons Receive Recognition UPMC Pinnacle’s youngest patients - newborns - were recently dressed in holiday stockings and knit caps. Nurses arranged babies in the newborn nursery in the new maternity unit at UPMC Pinnacle Harrisburg for a photo op and visit with Santa.

Since 1992, the Pinnacle Health Auxiliary volunteers have sewn stockings that are given to babies born at UPMC Pinnacle hospitals during the holiday season. This year, more than 140 stockings were delivered to UPMC Pinnacle Harrisburg, Lititz, and Memorial maternity units and were to be shared with mothers giving birth the last two weeks in December.

James Grandon, chair of the Pinnacle Health Foundation board, and his wife, Jean, joined the festive gathering and were recognized for their donation to the Pinnacle Health Foundation’s Labor of Love Campaign.

The Pinnacle Health Foundation launched a $10 million fundraising campaign, called Labor of Love, for its new Women and Babies Center in Hollinger Tower at UPMC Pinnacle Harrisburg. The Grandons’ contribution supported the construction of the newborn nursery in the new maternity unit that opened for patients on Dec. 17. Spotted Lanternfly Quarantine Information Posted The Pennsylvania Department of Agriculture is encouraging businesses to obtain the required spotted lanternfly permit to ensure they are complying with the spotted lanternfly quarantine orders. As the next phase of the spotted lanternfly life cycle gears up, now is an ideal time for businesses to learn how they can jumpstart this spring’s fight.

There is no cost to businesses to obtain a permit. Under the law, businesses in Pennsylvania need to take the online permit training and exam and receive a permit for their vehicles. The Pennsylvania Department of Agriculture continues its work to contain and minimize the spread of the spotted lanternfly while also keeping commerce flowing in Pennsylvania.

In November 2017, 13 Pennsylvania counties - Berks, Bucks, Carbon, Chester, Delaware, Lancaster, Lebanon, Lehigh, Monroe, Montgomery, Northampton, Philadelphia, and Schuylkill - were placed under quarantine to help stop the spread of the spotted lanternfly.

States with spotted lanternfly populations are also required to follow the permit requirements for Pennsylvania. This will help prevent the movement of the pest from other states into Pennsylvania.

The spotted lanternfly permit training teaches business owners, managers, and designated employees how to comply with the quarantine - an important legal designation to help stop the spread of spotted lanternfly - to ensure each

of their employees are complying with the law. The quarantine order directs businesses, residents, and county authorities to follow guidelines to prevent the movement of the certain articles that contain any living stages of the spotted lanternfly, including egg masses, nymphs, and adults such as logs, stumps, or any tree parts; nursery stock; crated materials; and trucks or vehicles not stored indoors.

By investing time and personnel to inspect vehicles to safeguard against transporting insects, people can help to ensure this pest does not reach farther beyond those counties that are already quarantined.

As part of the spotted lanternfly quarantine agreement beginning on Wednesday, May 1, The

Department’s Bureau of Plant Industry will begin to perform inspections and verification checks to confirm that businesses are properly permitted. Failure to take the permit exam and educate employees could result in possible penalties and fines.

Columbia Crossing River Trails Center, 41 Walnut St., Columbia, invites to public to view “Ice Harvesting Along the Susquehanna,” an immersive exhibit about the ice harvesting industry. Prior to refrigeration, homes and commercial businesses required ice to keep food cold.

A worldwide industry was created to collect ice from frozen rivers, ponds, and lakes and ship it by wagon and rail to be sold. Pennsylvania ranked third in the nation for ice production behind only Maine and New York. Locally, Columbia had at least three ice houses that kept residents supplied with ice for their homes. Deliveries of ice were brought by the “ice man”

to homes on a regular basis.

The exhibit follows the ice from the river to the kitchen. It features a wide variety of objects, including ice harvesting tools such as drills, saws, and plows. Antique ice boxes, ice shavers, ice crushers, and other memorabilia are also on view.

The exhibit was designed and installed by Susquehanna Heritage, which manages the building for the Borough of Columbia. Objects and content development was led by local historian Lynn Smoker.

Smoker will present a Talk With the Collector in the exhibit hall on Thursday, Jan. 24, at 6:30 p.m. Smoker will discuss the

ice harvesting industry and his collection.

Plans are underway for the 11th annual A Taste of Western Lancaster County celebration, to be held on Friday, Feb. 1, at the Elizabethtown Public Library, 10 S. Market St., Elizabethtown.

The event will run from 4:30 to 9 p.m. Proceeds from the 21-andolder event will benefit the library and the service projects of the Elizabethtown Rotary Club.

Throughout all three levels of the library, attendees may sample appetizers, entrees, soups, salads, side dishes, snacks, desserts, and beverages from local restaurants, vendors, and purveyors serving the greater Elizabethtown area.

Aimee Nelson noted that several participating restaurateurs use the event to test out new recipes and food and beverage combinations that they may be considering adding to their menus or selection - giving attendees an exclusive sneak peek at what may be to come.

Nelson said that this year’s event will feature some new vendors that organizers are excited about. However, plenty of fan favorites will be returning as well. “(A Taste of Western Lancaster County) has become such a tradition that we work to keep the elements that people look for - like having the giant Turkey Hill cow parked in front of the building,” shared Phillips.

As attendees make their way through the library, they can vote for winners in various categories, such as Best in Show, Best Dessert, and Best Appetizer. “Our vendors really stretch themselves to do new things,” remarked Phillips.

Live music will be performed by local bands on two levels of the library. “People really enjoy staying and mingling and talking,” said Nelson. “I’m always amazed by how quickly the evening goes.” A Taste of Western Lancaster County has been coined “the Elizabethtown Reunion” by many of those who attend year after year. “It gives you the opportunity to see and connect with people from the community, plus you kind of get to

put faces to the food from restaurants you go to,” Phillips said.

“And you get to support two great community organizations.”

The Chesapeake Bay Foundation (CBF) has named Brenda Sieglitz to manage the Keystone 10 Million Trees Partnership, one of Pennsylvania’s efforts to restore and protect its rivers and streams by planting 10 million trees by the end of 2025.

The Keystone 10 Million Trees Partnership is a collaborative effort, coordinated by CBF, of national, regional, state, and local agencies, conservation organizations, watershed groups, conservancies, outdoors enthusiasts, businesses, and individuals dedicated to planting trees to improve the condition of Pennsylvania waters.

Trees clean and protect waterways, including drinking water sources, by filtering and absorbing

polluted runoff, stabilizing stream banks, and improving soil quality.

Simultaneously, they help cleanse the air of harmful contaminants and beautify communities.

As the Keystone 10 Million Trees Partnership manager, Sieglitz will help ensure the success of the Partnership by synchronizing creative strategies that serve and diversify the partners, funders, agencies, and other priority audiences. Working closely with CBF’s Making History Campaign team, Sieglitz will also serve as the key internal point person to ensure the Partnership activities are coordinated and communicated.

For more than a decade, Sieglitz worked in the private sector, where she has focused on project

management, business development initiatives, sales, and marketing. During that time, she created and led multiple marketing and other events centered on public-private partnerships, including leading the development and launch for a biodegradable food service disposables line in the Mid-Atlantic region.

She resides in Mount Joy and is co-chair of Lancaster County Conservancy’s Riverlands Trail Festival. She has held leadership and mentor roles with the Susquehanna Valley Chamber of Commerce, the Lancaster County Chamber of Commerce, Team Sarcoma Keepin’ it Kevin, and the National Parks Service. She is also a certified Pennsylvania Master Naturalist.

Lecture Series To Examine Local History Historic Ephrata Cloister, 632 W. Main St., Ephrata, will host its annual Winter History Class from 9 a.m. to noon each Thursday from Jan. 31 to March 28.

The lecture series will explore many aspects of the region’s history along with some Ephrata Cloister stories. During the series, participants will learn a new way to view the Pennsylvania German art of Fraktur, learn ways to care for old photographs, and investigate the close of the German Seventh-day Baptist Church at the Cloister in 1934. Dr. Leroy Hopkins will provide information on Lancaster County’s African-American heritage, and Dr. Christopher Herbert will return to

share new insight into Ephrata’s music. In cooperation with the Ephrata Public Library, the Ephrata Cloister has received a grant from the Gilder Lehrman Institute of American History to spend one class period on the Revolutionary War, with a focus on the local region, as part of the “Revisiting the Founding Era” initiative.

Hot coffee and homemade treats will be available at each session. Separate fees for the full series have been set for Cloister Associates members and for nonmembers. There is also a set fee for individual sessions.
