Three years.

Thirty-six months of exploring the differences and similarities between people.

One thousand ninety-five days of altering the world’s perception of a common condition.

Twenty-six thousand, two hundred eighty hours of helping people with Down syndrome function better in their world.

On Jan. 11, GiGi’s Playhouse Lancaster conducted its third birthday party, celebrating three years of serving the local Down syndrome

community. It was a special milestone for the special place located at 2503 Oregon Pike.

Over those years, GiGi’s Playhouse has enhanced the lives of hundreds of participants from Lancaster, York and beyond. Yet in many ways, GiGi’s Playhouse is just getting started.

“When we opened three years ago, it was exciting,” said Christine Hewitt, GiGi’s Playhouse Lancaster’s site coordinator, “because there were

support groups, but there wasn’t anything in the area like it. The main goal is to change the way people view Down syndrome. Everything we do here is designed to help people with Down syndrome do their best. But we also support their families.”

More than a playhouse or even a school, GiGi’s Playhouse is a Down syndrome achievement center. The Lancaster location serves nearly 380 participants and their families

through hands-on programs, tutoring, exercise classes, activities, arts and crafts and life skill-building sessions, all free of charge.

GiGi’s Playhouse Lancaster’s participants range in age from infants to those 60 years of age. Hewitt is the lone paid employee, but she’s supported by a staff of more than 40 volunteers.

“We practice a lot of like skills here,” said Hewitt, a resident of Ephrata. “We focus so much on little steps, on the next steps they can do. Here, we celebrate little wins. They’re little things we take for granted.”

The modern world has evolved through the widespread use of new technology in a variety of ways; during the COVID-19 pandemic, schools and businesses heavily relied on technology to safely continue operating. Although the world is no longer in a state of emergency lockdown, organizations such as Junior Achievement of Southcentral Pennsylvania (JASCPA) have found that procedures adopted during the pandemic continue to prove themselves useful.

In 2021, JASCPA implemented JA Inspire, a virtual career fair that schools can utilize for their students. The program simulates a real career fair, replete with business representatives who provide details on what it’s like to work for their companies and respective fields through the virtual platform. Upon signing into the application, students begin at the exterior of the career fair building accompanied by virtual students and school buses. They can navigate the page to visit the

interior lobby, where dozens of companies have set up their digital booths. “It looks like a real career fair lobby,” said Allison Kierce, chief operating officer of JASCPA. “Students can visit any of the booths they are interested in to learn more about the companies and fields they may want to study in college.”

Students participating in JA Inspire are provided with a virtual backpack that allows them to save videos, documents and any information provided by a booth that they want to keep for future reference. Students can log back into the fair at any time to

review materials or visit more booths, and they can email specific questions to company representatives.

Prior to 2021, JA Inspire was a conventional career fair that was held in a physical location. Although schools resumed many in-person programs after the pandemic, many have opted to continue using virtual platforms such as the new iteration of JA Inspire. “A lot of people wanted to get back to having in-person career fairs, but there are logistics to that,” said Kierce. “Virtually hosting JA Inspire removes the need for schools to worry about transportation and

allows students to see more companies in a shorter amount of time.”

JA Inspire is provided to schools free of charge, and in 2022, JASCPA was given funding to open JA Inspire to adults in addition to schools. Adults interested in the

career fair can contact their local PA CareerLink agency for more information.

JA Inspire will return this year and will be open from Wednesday, March 1, to Friday, June 30. For more information, visit https://tinyurl .com/jainspirefair.

At a recent meeting, the Manheim Township Educational Foundation (MTEF) board of directors approved the Grant Committee’s

recommendation to award nine grants totaling more than $61,000 for the fall 2022 cycle. These grants are made possible through EITC donations, memorial funds, institutional grants, general donations, and contributions from MTEF community partners.

A $20,000 grant was awarded to support the construction of an outdoor

learning pavilion at Brecht Elementary School. This space will comply with ADA (Americans With Disabilities Act) accessibility standards and will provide room for an entire class to learn while being protected from the weather.

A grant for $1,223 will provide students in grades three and four at Bucher Elementary several hands-on

environmental science lessons, from water conversation to animal biodiversity, presented by a county conservation officer. These lessons are designed to help students build a positive relationship between nature and community, including the stream on school property, while addressing Pennsylvania state standards in environment and ecology.

Building on the success of author Thomas C. Murray’s keynote speech at Manheim Township School District’s 2022 convocation, a $9,500 grant will allow the district to host educator and author Joseph M. Sanfelippo as a speaker at kickoff day in August 2023.

A grant of $700 will support Brecht Elementary School’s Summer Reading Kickoff and provide each student with an age-appropriate book to read over the summer. Students will choose their book and make a craft designed to remind them to read over the summer. This grant is made possible through the Louise Engle Memorial Fund established through MTEF.

A grant of $6,100 is designated for the Martian Colonization Project, an interdisciplinary, problem-based STEM learning experience based on the novel “The Martian” by Andy Weir. Over the course of several months, seventh-grade students will collaborate to solve real-world problems in nontraditional formats accessible for all learners. This grant is funded by the Arthur F. Shirk Memorial Fund.

MTEF will help to offset some of the costs for the Manheim Township High School’s quiz bowl team to compete at the national level through funds provided by an outside grant. The grant awarded is $2,500.

A grant of $1,887 will provide a set of high-end replicas of skulls of ancient hominids for use in seventh-grade science classes. The

Giovannini Marks 102nd Birthday

“People often think people with Down syndrome can’t do things,” continued Hewitt. “The truth is they can. They’re just going to need more time or a little help. They’re so capable of so much.”

GiGi’s Playhouse bears the name of GiGi Gianni, who was born with Down syndrome in Chicago more than 20 years ago. Since the first GiGi’s Playhouse was founded, 54 other locations have been opened, including the one in Lancaster, the only site in Pennsylvania.

“Since we opened, people have

really come out,” said Hewitt. “How quickly we’ve grown is surprising. We’ve outgrown this building. But what’s also surprising is how much of an impact it has had on our participants.”

“It’s allowed them to become their best selves,” added Hewitt. “I’ve seen so many participants come out of their shells. This is like a home to them. They are safe here. They take a lot of pride in this place.”

For more information on GiGi’s Playhouse, go to www.gigisplay house.org/lancaster.

Helen Giovannini was treated to a party, including a cake and flowers, on her birthday.

Albright LIFE Lancaster celebrated participant Helen Giovannini’s 102nd birthday on Jan. 6.

Giovannini’s special day included lots of time with family, a giant birthday card from children at the neighboring day care, cake,

flowers, and dancing.

When asked for her secrets, Helen shared, “Just keep moving. Don’t worry about aging because it’s going to happen anyway. Age is just a number. It’s how you feel on the inside, and I feel like I’m 21!”

skulls will facilitate a hands-on activity at the culmination of the life science unit.

A grant of over $6,927 was awarded for fitness equipment for kinesthetic intervention for students in grades five and six at Landis Run Intermediate School. This project seeks to help students who struggle to stay focused in the classroom by providing them with a productive way to channel their excess energy.

A $12,600 grant will support a weekly after-school and summer program of STEAM enrichment for English language learners and atrisk students at Bucher Elementary. Utilizing the resources of Snapology, a community provider of STEAM education programs, this project will teach students about science, technology, engineering, art and math through the building and manipulation of a variety of hands-on and technology.

Maintaining a healthy weight is believed to promote long-term health, while being overweight or obese can be a risk factor for various conditions, including Type 2 diabetes and cardiovascular disease. The World Health Organization reports that the worldwide obesity rate has tripled since 1975. In 2016, more than 1.9 billion adults were overweight. Of these, more than 650 million were obese.

Health issues related to obesity are largely preventable. Losing weight in a healthy manner is essential for safe and lasting results, and individuals aspiring to lose weight may consider the following guidelines on what to do and what not to do.

DO add lean protein sources to your diet. Healthline indicates the body burns calories when digesting and

metabolizing protein, so a high-protein diet can help to shed up to 80 to 100 calories per day. Protein also helps you to feel full, reducing the propensity to overeat.

DON’T get hung up on numbers early on. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention advises that even modest weight loss of 5% to 10% of your total body weight can produce health benefits, such as improvements in blood sugar levels, cholesterol and blood pressure. Start small and gradually build up.

DO eat at least four servings of vegetables and three servings of fruits daily. Produce contains an abundance of vital nutrients and is often fiber-rich and low in calories, which helps you to feel full.

DON’T overlook the impact of beverages on weight loss. The calories in sugary beverages, including some all-natural fruit juices, can add up quickly. Stick to water, tea or other unsweetened beverages to help with weight loss.

DO get moving more. The Mayo Clinic notes that while it is possible to lose weight without exercise, getting moving can help burn the excess calories you can’t cut through diet alone. Exercise boosts metabolism, benefits

mood and strengthens muscles and the cardiovascular system, as well.

DON’T go shopping while hungry. If you do, you may make impulse buys that compromise healthy eating plans.

DO speak with a doctor if you are comparing diet and exercise plans. A health care professional can indicate if a particular diet or fitness routine is acceptable for your age, goals and current health status.

DON’T forget to track eating. Most healthy diets involve some sort of calorie-counting, whether they actually require you to document your intake or use a formula to attribute

“points” or another measure related to what you eat. Writing or tracking the foods and beverages you consume will provide the most honest assessment of habits that could affect weight loss.

DO include foods you enjoy. Completely restricting access to occasional treats may cause you to resent healthy eating, which can derail weight loss goals. The principle of moderation can apply to healthy weight loss as long as you account for the more calorie-dense foods. Losing weight in a healthy manner is achievable when you seek guidance and follow some time-tested techniques.

Grant Provides Truck To Power Packs Project

Using a targeted regional commitment to address food insecurity, the High Foundation has awarded Power Packs Project a grant in the amount of $55,000 for the purchase of a 20foot box truck. Power Packs will now be able to transport more than five times more fresh produce and other nonperishable food to families in need in the community.

Power Packs executive director Brad Peterson explained that the new truck has the capacity to move up to five tons of food. In the past, he noted, Power

Packs would need to make multiple trips to pick up or deliver food and sometimes had to turn down donations because of the lack of transportation. He added that the truck will go a long way to increase access to fresh, nutritious food for families in Power Packs’ 90 partner schools in Lancaster and Lebanon counties.

The truck will be operational immediately and will be used in deliveries to Power Packs affiliates and partner schools as well as pickups from food
