The Women’s Garden Club of Lancaster County will hold its monthly meeting and presentation on Thursday, Jan. 24, at 1 p.m. at St. Thomas Episcopal Church, 301 St. Thomas Road, Lancaster. A brief business meeting will be followed by a presentation providing suggestions on the latest hybrids to use in one’s garden this year. The presenter will be Sinclair Adam, director of Penn State’s Southeast Agricultural Research and Extension Center in Manheim. Flower trials at the center involve conducting research on plants and providing data to the general public and commercial growers. A refreshment social will follow the program. Visitors and new members are invited, with a donation requested.

Home-Based Head Start Offered In MTSD By Ann Mead Ash
Twins Jeremiah and Joshua Philemond worked Head Start home visitor Jessica Gordon to build with brightly colored, interconnecting blocks on the floor of the living room in their Manheim Township School District (MTSD) home. “It’s a tall tower,” cried Jeremiah, gesturing to the nearly three-foot-high structure. Gordon visits the twins weekly to provide parenting support to their mother, Kettia. “I help the parent give lessons to their children,” said Gordon, who noted that children ages 3 to 5 residing in MTSD whose families meet certain income requirements qualify for home visits. “The idea is to work with the child academically.” Gordon explained that many people have heard of Head Start classrooms, but they may not be aware of the home See Head Start pg 5

Writeface, a local nonprofit organization that offers free writing workshops to veterans, has announced its 2019 winter/spring schedule. Folks do not need to be a writer or an artist to participate. Writeface strives to provide a safe space for veterans, in the company of other veterans, to explore their inner landscape by using proven writing techniques to become reacquainted with aspects of themselves that were lost in battle. “Our goal, first and foremost, is always to create a safe environment for veterans to explore and address any difficulty they may be experiencing in their present life that may have roots in the past,” said Annie Ginder, who co-founded Writeface with Scott Hower and serves as a facilitator. “The See Workshops pg 4

Shine. Sponsored in part by the Tim Tebow Foundation, Night to Shine is centered on celebrating people with special needs through an unforgettable prom experience. The annual event is one of several ministries led by the See Night To Shine pg 12
American Banker magazine’s 2016 Innovator of the Year, John Hope Bryant, will give the keynote address at the 31st annual Rev. Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. (MLK) Breakfast, which will be held on Monday, Jan. 21, by the Crispus Attucks Community Center. The event will take place at Millersville University’s Marauder Court at the Student Memorial Center, 21 S. George St., Millersville. Coffee and conversation will be offered from 6:30 to 7 a.m., and the meal and program will run from 7 to 9 a.m. For more than 30 years, the MLK Breakfast has aimed to bring members of the community together in a time to reflect and commit to being agents of change and to remember the life and legacy of its namesake. This year’s theme, “Why We Can’t Wait: Achieving Economic Equity,” will be championed through Bryant’s

will hold a designer bag bingo fundraiser on Sunday, Jan. 20, at the Farm and Home Center, 1383 Arcadia Road, Lancaster. The doors will open at 11 a.m., and the event will take place from 1 to 5 p.m. Prizes will include designer bags and purses. The event will include food, door prizes, drawings, and a silent auction.
