Library naming recognizes contributions of local Rotarian BY JEFF FALK
When a library is named after you, you know you’re doing something right. There’s a library and technology center located in Danli, Honduras, that bears the name

Things change. Society evolves. Priorities shift. A change in societal norms has created a shortage in volunteer firefighters locally and caused Manheim Township Fire Rescue to adjust how it provides emergency services. “We definitely have a crisis in Pennsylvania in the volunteer setting,” said Scott Little, Manheim Township Fire Rescue chief. “Volunteerism is down.” At the height of volunteer firefighting’s popularity in the 1970s, there were 300,000 volunteer firefighters in Pennsylvania.
Today, there are about 30,000. “Some fire companies in Lancaster County struggle for volunteers,” said Little, emphasizing the importance of instilling in local residents a need to give back to their communities. He noted that generational volunteer firefighters play a key role in keeping fire departments staffed with volunteers. Manheim Township Fire Rescue operates and staffs four fire companies - at Fruitville Pike, Richmond Square, Neffsville and Eden - with 34 full-time firefighters, 48 part-timers and 25 volunteers, 13 of whom are active firefighters and 12 who
provide administrative support. Overseen by Manheim Township municipal government, Manheim Township Fire Rescue operates with an annual budget of about $6 million. “We’ve become an all-hazard response force,” said Little. “We’re kind of a catch-all. That’s why our profession is so unique. Every time the tone drops, you’re going to something different. It’s a new day. It’s something unique and challenging.” To become a volunteer firefighter, individuals must complete 200 hours of training. “You’ve got to have trained p e o ple goi n g i nto b u r n i n g

“Hone y b e es p ollinate a third of everything we eat,” said Master Beekeeper Denny Gorman. “Without them, we wouldn’t have most of the fruit we eat. Honey bees also pollinate 100% of the almonds grown in this country.” Gorman, who is vice president of the Lancaster County Beekeepers Society, is passionate about the insects. He invites other people who are interested in learning more to attend the 2024 New Beekeeper Workshop.
It will be held on Saturday, Jan. 27, from 8 a.m. to 3 p.m. at The Gathering Place, 6 Pine St., Mount Joy. The event will cover everything people need to start the hobby of beekeeping. “We provide a continental breakfast and a very nice lunch,” Gorman said. “I personally teach a class in honey bee biology and hive biology. We teach classes in how to extract honey, where to place your hives, a little bit on diseases. We try to prepare a new beekeeper with the basic info they need to start beekeeping.”

There are great days with positive outcomes, but there are also bad days.” In 2022, Manheim Township Fire Rescue responded to a total of about 2,900 emergency calls of varying types. “There are some things you do to try to make it attractive to volunteers,” said Little. “You’re always
trying to do what you can to retain people who want to give back. We’re competing against so many other interests, so you’ve got to be creative. Volunteers are community-driven individuals who are dedicated to service before self. Beekeeping from pg 1 Gorman has been a beekeeper for seven years. He started the hobby after he retired from a career in business. “I wanted something to keep my mind sharp and something that I knew nothing about,” he said. He attended his first beekeeper workshop and now is vice president of the organization that got him hooked on the hobby. “B e es are am azing l y intelligent,” he shared. “They can understand the concept of zero. They can recognize human faces.” Bees often get a bad rap, Gorman noted, because they sting , and he has endured his share of pain from the hobby. “After a while, it hardly bothers you at all,” he said simply. It’s worth the discomfort to know he’s doing his part to help the environment, he said. “As a group, we’re doing our best to save the bees,” he explained. Due to a variety of factors, including loss of habitat,
the honey bee population is declining. Attending the workshop provides people with a one-year membership in the Lancaster County Beekeepers Society. Established in 1876 as the Lancaster Honey Producers Association, the society exists to promote better understanding of honey bee biology and behavior; provide public awareness, education and ser vice; and promote honey and other products of the hive. Meetings include educational topics about beekeeping as well as hive checks at the Southeast Agricultural Research and Extension Center located at 1446 Auction Road in Manheim. “Members can come once a month to the center, and they can learn all about the bees without having to handle the bees,” Gorman said. “Experts will show the hives and talk about beekeeping.” The workshop is a good

The people who I’ve met down there are friends now.” In cooperation with the local Rotary Club in Danli, the library and technology and education center was named in Lawrence’s honor to recognize his overall altruistic contributions to the area, his direct efforts in constructing the library and the $12,000 donated by the Lancaster Sunrise Rotary Club, of which Lawrence is a member, to fund the project. The library was built right next to a

school in Danli that serves students in kindergarten through eighth grade. “We basically focus on water, medical, dental needs and construction,” said Lawrence, a 68-yearold third-generation Rotarian. “These kids have nothing. The only hope for their future is education. The health care helps. But this is something happening in their village, and when they find out about it, it’s like, ‘How can I help?’ It’s awesome to see. I don’t speak Spanish, but I’ve always been able to communicate, especially with the kids.” A native of Vermont, Lawrence moved to Lancaster County in 2012. His involvement with a Rotary Club there has continued through Lancaster Sunrise Rotary Club. This month, Lawrence will be making his 16th mission tr ip to Danli, accompanied by a handful of other local Rotarians. “ T hey ’re all community improvement-type projects,” said Lawrence. “I just call it a grounding e x p e r i e n ce b e c a u s e i t shows you the difference between what you want and what you need. they have great attitudes. There’s just something to it that makes me want to go back every year.” “ We ’ve gone back to schools we built earlier and put additions on,” he added. “It’s kind of doing the same things every time, but with different people and different projects. I look at it like, ‘What else can I do? The GIANT Company “Round Up at the Register” The GIANT company is once again partnering with Manheim Township School District to help support the fight against childhood hunger. From January 1st - March 31st everyone who shops at GIANT Food stores (1605 Lititz Pike, Lancaster, PA 17601) will be invited to “Round Up at the Register” their grocery purchase and donate the round-up amount to our school community. We encourage our MT community to help spread the word to support students in our district who need assistance!
MT School Board Saturday Morning Conversations The MT community is invited to attend the Saturday, January 13th Manheim Township School Board Community Conversations at the District Office from 10:00 a.m. -12:00 p.m. These drop-in sessions are informal, informational, and conversational in nature to provide the community the opportunity to meet representatives from the MT School Board and discuss important topics related to MT schools. The drop-ins are held on the Saturday morning between the School Board Work Sessions and Board Action Meetings.
Over 200 students confirmed participation in our annual district Holiday Shop. Our two district social workers, Ms. Roseanne Myers and Ms. Jaime Falgie, worked alongside many other volunteers to plan, organize, and host a larger-scale holiday shop. Thanks to the wonderful donations from many staff members, parents, and community members, the shop was filled with special gifts, toiletries, and food items for our families.
