Amadeus Chorale Youth Singers (ACYS) uses singing as an avenue, a tool, to provide children with opportunities to discover themselves and learn about the worlds around them. “Singing is a natural process,” said Darla Bair, the founder and
artistic director of ACYS. “Many children sing before they speak. We all sing. It’s a natural human function.” A repur posing of a proven successful program, ACYS will be introduced as an organization to Lancaster County for the first time during informational meetings at 4 p.m. on Sundays, Jan. 11 and 18, ACYS is seeking to duplicate

Are we ever too old to make new friends? Absolutely not, say the senior citizens who gather on Tuesday mornings for SALT (Seniors Are Living Treasures). The group meets for fun, friendship and fellowship from 9 a.m. to noon weekly at Mount Joy Church of God, 30 E. Main St., Mount Joy. “ We might have anywhere from 25 to 30 people each week,” said Tracy Miller, who coordinates the group with a team of volunteers. “We have people in their 50s and up. Our oldest member is 93.” Each meeting begins with people gathering up to 30 minutes early in the church lobby, enjoying the time to catch up with each other before heading into the chapel for coffee, food and games such as Uno or Apples to Apples. Coordinator Debbie Cohn might lead the group in chair yoga, or coordinator Renee Haney might direct a small group in devotionals or take prayer requests. Coordinator Nancy Shonk is in charge of the snack calendar, ensuring that everyone who wants to bring food has a chance to do so. The group does some activities once a month, such as playing bingo or enjoying a movie together. They also play roundrobin matches of games like cornhole or ladderball, switching tables regularly to encourage interaction among everyone. at Lancaster Church of the Brethren, 1601 Sunset Ave., Lancaster. ACYS’ first rehearsal will be conducted at 4 p.m. on Sunday, Feb. 1, at Lancaster Church of the Brethren. ACYS is broken down into two age-related groups - the SaraSingers for children ages 6 to 10 and the Lyric Choir for Singers for older kids between ages 11 and 14. Children and their families are asked to register before the informational meetings at www .amadeuschorale.org. There are fees associated with participation in the programs. “(The singers) will learn that there are people all around the world who share the dreams they have,” said Bair. “Different languages don’t separate us. It’s a global perspective. We teach children that there are right ways to do things. We teach them how to do things properly so they can grow in confidence. That’s the kind of things we look at and celebrate as a win.”
Par ticipating singers will rehearse for an hour each week. As the singers progress, the choirs will create recordings and music videos, perform publicly at about three or four concerts and festivals each year, collaborate with other groups of musical artists and embark on trips. “We give our kids a lot of experiences,” said Bair. “I don’t believe in competitions. I only want to give my kids stories to tell of where they’re singing and who they’re singing for. I want the kids to have experiences to have lifetime stories to tell.” ACYS participation is open to all Lancaster County youths with an interest in singing. “I’d like to see all Lancaster County children come sing with me,” said Bair, a native of Lancaster County and a resident of East Lampeter Township. “We don’t have a maximum number. If we have a choir that gets too big, we’ll start a new one. We have two requirements: A
child must sing in tune, and a child must show respect for every adult involved. That’s it.” Involvement with ACYS programs could instill a lifelong love of singing into maturing youths. Proceed with caution. “They are children who already know they love singing and their parents are willing to support them,” said Bair. “This is for kids and their families. It’s like the family is joining the organization together. These are people who want to invest in their children and get the type of high-quality music instruction you can’t get anywhere else. You can see the quality in the things we do.” “Parents can expect their children will be elevated in their vocal
etiquette,” added Bair. “They can expect their children will be in a safe environment. (The children) can be who they authentically are. The parents often form their own subgroup, like a club of parents.” Bair originally founded ACYS in Rochester, N.Y., in 1996. At the heights of its success, the program featured 140 singers and staged performances at numerous high-profile events. “We just sort of moved it here,” said Bair. “I’m really open to the opportunities here. We want to duplicate the joys of the stories, but the stories are going to be different here. These kids will be very much of the community, learning about it and being a part of it.”

Some people come week after week. Some people have other activities they’re involved in and can only come once a month, and that’s OK.” Many of the members have lost a
spouse and are looking for connection and companionship. LBC to Expand Baseball Field

Lancaster Bible College (LBC) is beginning construction on the expansion of its baseball field in order to align the field with NCAA distance standards. Planned phases include the addition of a retaining wall behind the outfield fence, as well as land development; fencing; a windscreen; and netting along left field to provide safety for players, fans, and property. The NCAA standard fence distance at centerfield is 400 feet, and LBC’s current field is 320 feet. The outfield fence will be moved back to 375 feet at centerfield, which will bring the field in line with NCAA standards.

Soccer from pg 1 On Nov. 1 at Central Dauphin Middle School’s Landis Field in Colonial Park, Lancaster Catholic realized one of its preseason goals by capturing the District Three Class AA championship. The Crusaders edged Tulpehocken 3-2 in overtime in the final match of the Class AA tournament. After the Crusaders relinquished a 2-0 lead, Luca Dorazio scored the game-winning goal for Lancaster Catholic six minutes into the extra session. Carson Spangler had given the Crusaders their early lead with a pair of first-half tallies. Then on Nov. 4, Lancaster Catholic’s splendid season came to an end with a tough 1-0 home loss to Faith Christian in the opening round of the state playoffs. Lancaster Catholic concluded its year with an overall mark of 19-3. “People don’t see all the things these boys do on a daily basis,” said Fossi. “If they’re not participating in soccer, they’re probably watching a game. They’re into the sport. We talk about culture and how people view us from the outside. These kids are hard workers, and they’re dedicated to their sport, and not just in season. They have phenomenal GPAs (grade point averages), they’re active in the community and they live their faith. I’m just glad we could put them in a position to be successful.” Lancaster Catholic opened its campaign with 17 straight triumphs before dropping a 2-1 decision to Manheim Township in the Lancaster-Lebanon League playoffs. Although the Crusaders showed consistent and constant improvement throughout the fall, they may have experienced a turning point in the middle of September when senior midfielder Will O’Malley was lost to injury.
“We got off to a really good start, and we were cruising a little bit when Will O’Malley got hurt,” said Fossi, a 2004 graduate of Manheim Township High School. “At the next game, you could see the boys really wanted to play for him. That mentality and the next-man-up approach, like, ‘How do we continue to play at a high level?’ was important. We needed to fill a void. The coaching staff portrayed it like, ‘We don’t need another Will O’Malley. We need everyone to improve by 5 or 10%.” Lancaster Catholic’s high-powered offense was led by Stephen Scott, Spangler, Dorazio, Bastian Lucquin and O’Malley. The Crusaders’ stingy defense was backstopped by netminder Logan Kratz. “The nine seniors we had coming back was the most I had ever had, and all nine seniors were important players to the team,” said Fossi of his preseason expectations. “I thought we had underclassmen who could step up and play their roles. I thought we were pretty confident coming into the season. I thought if we could stay healthy, we could have a special season.” Lancaster Catholic also captured the Lancaster-Lebanon Section Three championship with a 10-0 league mark. “(Culture and chemistry are) something I’ve wanted to build over the last eight years,” Fossi said. “I wanted to create my own culture at Lancaster Catholic, like we’re setting a standard. We have to have communication. We have to have common goals. We want everyone to feel part of that culture. That’s been my motto, ‘Culture doesn’t graduate.’ The expectations are always going to be high.”

Conestoga River on Ballot for River of the Year The Conestoga River is in the running for River of the Year for 2026, and the Conestoga River Club and partners encourage everyone in the Conestoga watershed to vote. The Pennsylvania Organization for Watersheds and Rivers, an affiliate of the Pennsylvania Environmental Council, with funding from the Pennsylvania Department of Natural Resources, awards one Pennsylvania river the status of River of the Year each year.
