CONSERVATION TALK

The Lancaster County Bird Club will meet on Thursday, Jan. 10, at 7 p.m. in the auditorium of the Farm and Home Center, 1383 Arcadia Road, Lancaster. After a short business meeting, Jeffrey Larkin, professor of wildlife ecology and conservation at Indiana University of Pennsylvania, will present a program on “Importance of Landscape-scale Forest Bird Conservation.”

Larkin and his students have assisted state and federal agencies and other conservation groups with understanding the ecology and associated management implications for birds and other animals. Making Disciples In Uganda Pastor Earns Doctorate Through LBC

There are many quotes exhorting people to be part of something bigger than themselves. Richmond Wandera, a native of Kampala, Uganda, has lived them. On Dec. 14, 2018, Wandera graduated from Lancaster Bible College (LBC) with a Doctor of Philosophy in leadership, with the goal of taking what he has learned back to his home country to spread knowledge among pastors there.

“Uganda has 40 million people and 85,000 pastors, but 70 percent of (the pastors have) had no training,” said

Wandera. “(Yet) they are forced to explain complex theology.” Wandera added that theological information is not easily available. Wandera realized that a biblical solution to the problem existed. “Jesus identified a few leaders and went deep with (teaching) them and then sent them out to multiply themselves,” said Wandera. “My mantra is ‘Train one to reach many.’”

This biblical solution led Wandera to found a nonprofit called Pastors Discipleship Network after completing a year at Moody Bible Institute in Chicago in 2008. Pastors are now being trained through LBC’s blended program, which mixes online learning with regular visits to the campus. The See LBC Student pg 3

Opera Lancaster will present “Amahl and the Night Visitors,” a one-act opera by Menotti, on Saturday, Jan. 5. Performances will take place at Fulton Elementary School, 225 W. Orange St., Lancaster, at 2 and 7 p.m.

Opera Lancaster’s production will feature Ambrose O’ Neill as Amahl and Tamara Black as his mother. The three kings, Caspar, Melchior and Balthazar, will be sung by Christyan Seay, Tom Cozzoli and Kevin Durkin.

Frozen Foot Race Series Enters 30th Year Power Packs - Serving And Growing

Michaelis Chapter 327 of the Korean War Veterans Association (KWVA) will hold its regular meeting on Wednesday, Jan. 9, in the Eagle Commons of Woodcrest Villa, 2001 Harrisburg Pike, Lancaster. The meeting will begin at noon. The speaker will be Larry Alexander, who will share the story of Merlin “Whitey” Groft, who fought in World War II. Membership in KWVA is open to all service members who served in Korea at any time from 1945 to the present or were in uniform serving anywhere from June 25, 1950, to Jan. 31, 1955. Opera Lancaster To Stage “Amahl” Performances

Before

Back in 2004, Joan Espenshade noticed the large number of children waiting for breakfast outside a Lancaster city school on a Monday morning.

Recognizing that these children may not be receiving adequate nutrition over the weekend, she founded Power Packs Project to help meet the nutritional needs of those children between Friday and Monday over the school year. The project sought to educate families as well by providing a recipe using low-cost ingredients that they could learn to replicate.

At the World Championships, each dancer will be required to dance a hard shoe and a soft shoe round in the first heat. The top 50 percent of the dancers in each age group will then be recalled to dance their two rounds again the following day. Only the top half of the competitors from heat two will progress to the third and final round, which is a nontraditional set dance that showcases rhythm, footwork, and endurance.

The ceili team consists of eight dancers plus one alternate. The team will perform a traditional group dance called a ceili, which is judged on uniformity as a team. Ceili dancing in Ireland began with group dances passed down through generations by tradition. They were eventually put into writing in the Irish dancing commission rule book in 1939. The Hooley School of Irish Dance has announced that six dancers have qualified to compete in the CLRG Irish Dance World Championships in Greensboro, N.C., from Sunday to Friday, April 14 to 19, 2019. These six dance students and a junior team of eight dancers will compete against more than 4,000 dancers who have qualified at their regional championships.

Competitors will come from Canada, Mexico, Ireland, Great Britain, mainland Europe, Australia, New Zealand, South Africa, and the United States.

The qualified solo dancers are Avery Winters, 10, Reamstown Elementary fourth-grader; Mia Kelly, 10, fourth-grader at Reidenbaugh Elementary; Olivia Raff, 13, eighth-grade student at Gerald Huesken Middle School School; Isabella Carper, 15, 10thgrade student at Conestoga Valley High School; David Irwin, 14, eighth-grader at Anchor Christian Academy; and Thomas Lane, 18, senior at Hershey High School. All of these dancers qualified for the World Championships at the regional Mid

faces going forward. Among these are the need for volunteers, the need to add food sourcing resources, and the ability to provide nutritious food that can be utilized by families from a variety of cultural backgrounds.

Volunteers are needed both at the Power Packs warehouse, located on Walnut Street in Lancaster, and at the schools and other sites where food is distributed. “We need volunteer drivers to deliver food to schools, and we need volunteers at the schools for packing,” said Thompson, who noted that because of a rotating schedule, volunteers can serve as little as once a month. She added that certain volunteer positions can be physically demanding. Volunteers who work at the warehouse or drive vans should be agile and able to lift up to 40 pounds. At the school sites,

packing the bags is not as physically demanding. Thompson said that she has special appreciation for the organization’s volunteer base. “We are trying to grow our volunteer base and learn from the volunteers who have been with us for many years,” she stated.

Finding food that is nutritious, rather than processed or high in sugars, is always a challenge for Power Packs, according to Thompson. “We would love to have more connections for food sourcing,” said Thompson, who noted that tortilla shells and fresh fruits and vegetables like broccoli, green peppers, bananas, grapes, and oranges are on her wish list.

Thompson said that the organization is aware of the ethnic and cultural diversity of the population it serves and that steps are being taken to meet those specific

We need rice, and we need foods that are kosher (or) if (a family doesn’t) eat meat, how do we (meet) their (nutritional) needs with foods they will eat?

In addition to working with school social workers to learn how to better educate and empower families, Power Packs has partnered with a team at Georgetown University for a research project focused on the importance of nutrition in early childhood development. “We are looking forward to having our program evaluated and really learning,” said Thompson.

Thompson comes to the position with experience in both food service and directing nonprofit organizations. She oversaw St.

Joseph’s Children’s Health Foundation and also worked at St. Joseph Medical Center in Towson, Md. During that time, she ran a catering service and sold gourmet soups. In 2010, she realized her dream of owning a café in Lancaster, a place she called “homey and comfortable” that was open for nearly five years.

Power Packs’ signature fundraiser is a spring Stay-atHome Gala, which encourages families to stay home and donate the funds they would have used to attend an event. This year, the organization took part in the Extraordinary Give in November, ranking in the top 25 recipients by raising nearly $75,000. Power Packs welcomes both online and traditional donations year-round.

Christmas Tree Recycling Set

County residents can participate in an environmentally friendly way to dispose of their Christmas trees by dropping them at the mulching site at Lancaster County Central Park, 1 Nature’s Way, Lancaster, between dawn and dusk through Thursday, Jan. 31. Trees must be free of decorations, lights, plastic bags, and hardware, including nails in the trunk.

The park mulching program is for Christmas trees only. No other yard waste will be accepted. There is a three-tree limit per vehicle. Commercial haulers are strongly advised to contact their local municipalities for their respective Christmas tree recycling locations.

There is a suggested nominal donation for each tree. Donations will benefit the operation of the Dr. John Moss Native Tree Nursery in Central Park. The Lancaster County Christian School (LCCS) Class of 2019 recently returned from a short-term mission trip to Peru. From Nov. 3 to 11, the students served alongside the missionaries and staff of Kids Alive International, both in the capital city of Lima and in the jungle city of Pucallpa.

During their time in Peru, the students participated in many typical mission trip activities, such as work projects and children’s ministry.

Furthermore, the senior mission trip experience included opportunities for learning, fellowship, and encouragement. With this in mind, the seniors worked to prepare

The mulch will be available to residents on a firstcome, first-served basis after Friday, Jan. 4, near the tree drop-off site. Persons desiring free mulch should bring a pitchfork or shovel and a bag or a trailer to transport it home.

LBC Student from pg 1 program was introduced at LBC in 2016 following a visit to Uganda by LBC president Dr. Peter Teague. Wandera noted that pastors carefully selected for character, practice, and giftedness have been offered the opportunity to earn a Master of Arts in ministry. To date, 40 students have graduated. Twenty more are due to graduate in June. Each pastor is charged with sharing what he or she has learned with one pastor in Africa per year for the next five years.

The inspiration for the program had its roots in Wandera’s own story. The third of six children, Wandera shared that he and his family witnessed his father’s murder in 1990. “It changed our entire family,” said Wandera, whose family then moved to Naguru, a slum in Kampala. “It’s called a forgotten community. There is very little

hope there,” said Wandera.

In 1991, hope arrived in the form of sponsorship through Compassion International. Wandera and one of his sisters were sponsored and began attending the church through which that sponsorship was extended. Four years later, Wandera came to understand the Gospel. Noting that his family came from a traditional African background, Wandera said that the story of Joseph resonated with him.

Later his sister and his mother made decisions for Christ as well. Eventually his whole family became part of the fold.

Wandera finished high school in 2000, and in 2004 he graduated from Uganda Christian University with a bachelor’s degree in accounting and began working toward his certification with a goal of training accountants to do business ethically. He began teaching accounting, but he also felt a call to become a pastor. “I was deeply moved by

change that happened in our home because of the Gospel,” said Wandera. With encouragement from his pastor, he began pastoring at the church, but one night a woman who had lost a 3-year-old child to malaria asked him a question he could not answer.

Distraught, Wandera returned to working in accounting.

A discussion with Steve Wilson, a worker from Compassion International, brought him back to the ministry. He received the first Wesley K. Stafford scholarship to the Moody Bible Institute, with the goal of taking back what he learned to pastors in Africa. Wandera reached that goal only to find that many of the pastors needed leadership training as well as theological knowledge. That need led to him to LBC, where he began working toward his doctorate as a recipient of LBC’s Wesley K. Stafford Leadership Development Scholarship, established in 2013.

Fundraiser To Benefit Local Family A local family will benefit from a fundraiser on Saturday, Jan. 19, from 9 a.m. to 8 p.m. at Scratch Bakes, 3 W. Main St., Ephrata. One hundred percent of the day’s sales will be donated to Wesley “Wes” Myers, son of Tom and Samantha Kulfan Myers of Ephrata. The family will also receive all proceeds from a by-donation giveaway drawing that will be held during the fundraiser. Donations will also be accepted.

In early 2018, 1-year-old Wes was diagnosed with neuroblastoma, a rare form of cancer. Now 2 years old, Wes has had approximately 10 surgeries so far, and more are being scheduled. He is also about to welcome a new little brother into the world.

Proceeds of the fundraiser will go toward the cost of banking the new baby’s cord blood so it will be available if Wes needs it for his treatment.

Children with cancerous solid tumors like neuroblastoma can receive cord blood transplants after chemotherapy or radiotherapy to accelerate healing and reduce recovery times.

now have the opportunity to collect a unique set of finishers’ medals. “This is the first year that we’ve added finishers’ medals,” explained race director Chuck Wells. “If you finish all three races, you’ll be able to build yourself a snowman (out of the medals).”

The races are set to begin at 2 p.m. on Sundays, Jan. 20, Feb. 17, and March 17, on the campus of Elizabethtown College. Each of the three races will follow the same rolling route through a neighboring development and around the college campus.

Wells noted that the Idiots Option 10K, which was added for the first time in 2017, was a success and will be available again for those looking to complete a longer distance by covering the 5K course twice. The name sparked from a conversation Wells had in the past with two participants: One suggested the addition of a 10K, while the other remarked, “What kind of idiot would do that?”

Interested individuals may register for

each age group. Special discounts will be available at Funk Brewing to Frozen Foot participants following each race.

Through the decades, Wells said that the number of runners has fluctuated - perhaps due to the influx of 5K events in recent years.

The inaugural Frozen Foot series had 16 runners and later grew to more than 800 participants one year; however, in recent years Wells said the event has averaged about 375 participants.

“I don’t know that any of us that worked on (Frozen Foot) in the beginning thought that it would be around this long,” said Wells. “It’s great. I’m happy that the race has been around that long.”

A portion of the race proceeds benefits the Christ Church United Church of Christ mission fund to help people domestically and abroad. Wells said that the destination for this summer’s service project has not yet been finalized but will likely be somewhere within the United States.

At the end of the session, class members will receive goodie bags filled with coupons for program discounts.

The class is an extension of the rec center’s mission, which includes motivating people of all ages to exercise and live a healthy lifestyle. According to the rec center, families that take part in physical activity and choose nutritious foods may reap benefits of better

During the fall, Simon Ababou, fitness director at the Lititz recCenter, 301 W. Maple St., Lititz, had an idea to motivate children and their parents to help each other work toward a better fitness level. Ababou introduced the idea to three rec center instructors. “They said, ‘Let’s do it,’” recalled Ababou.

The result will be a new program, recFamilyFit, offered each Monday from 5:15 to 6 p.m. from Jan. 7 to Feb. 18. The class will be open to parents and grandparents and to children ages 5 to 12. The class will be designed to help reduce stress, and the program will offer weekly options for other rec center offerings.

According to Ababou, instructors Kira Talbot, Elsbeth West, and Jamie Hoffman will start the Monday class with relaxation, yoga, stretching, Pilates, and breathing techniques to help the children and parents release stress. After 15 minutes of stress reduction, the class will turn to physical activities like fitness games, which may include the use of small weights,

The Harvest House at Homestead Village, 1800 Village Circle, Lancaster, is slated for a grand opening in mid-January and will increase the community’s capacity to serve additional residents with cognitive and personal care needs. The CARFCCAC accredited Life Plan Community formerly known as a Continuing Care Retirement Community - currently serves approximately 475 residents in 211 cottages and villas, 111 apartments, and a 60-bed skilled nursing center.

The new household has been designed specifically to provide secure, high-quality memory support services in a personal care setting. The neighborhood-style home is located on the second floor of the Westvue building above Homestead Village’s existing Gelhard House. It features 13 private studios of varying sizes and designs. Each room has its own private bathroom with a shower. The central living space features a living room, a sunroom, and a country kitchen dining area.

A shared ground-level courtyard and walking path are available for residents who enjoy gardening, outdoor conversations, or group activities.

The Harvest House and Gelhard House strive to provide caring and compassionate personal care assistance, as well as

special services including planned on- and off-campus activities adapted for memory support residents, a “music and memory” program, pet therapy, oversize studios to accommodate couples, and complimentary transportation to medical appointments within a 5-mile radius of Homestead Village.

“Our staff encourages residents to pursue hobbies and interests that they enjoyed prior to their move to Homestead Village, as well as to explore new interests and pastimes,” said Tawana Winder Nock, administrator of personal care at Homestead Village. “Completing the resident ‘Life Story’ survey prior to move-in assists staff in planning and preparing experiences that will help this new environment become home.”

Homestead Village representatives asserted that it is an honor to provide resources and serve residents and families during the difficult journey of memory loss. Smith Takes Part In Conference Daniel Smith of Lancaster, a student at McDaniel College, Westminster, Md., participated in the Model European Union 2018 Conference in Washington, D.C., on Nov. 9 to 11.

McDaniel’s delegation of 10 students represented Belgium and had a briefing at the Embassy of Belgium by the actual diplomats who represent the country. Christianna N. Leahy, chair of the political science and international studies department at McDaniel, accompanied the students.

The Mid-Atlantic European Union Simulation engages students in discussions and debates that are both current and topical on the European Union’s (EU) agenda.
