Memorial Park - 101 Marietta Ave.: This park is 1.32 acres with a gazebo on Marietta Avenue, between Delta and Market Streets. Intended as a place of quiet and rest this park is not to be used for playground purposes.

The Service has an annual subscription program and employs paid, full-time Emergency Medical Technicians and Paramedics 24 hours a day. Nights and weekends, the Service’s ambulances are manned by volunteers. Help is always needed and appreciated.

R&J (Melhorn) Park - East Donegal Township - Farmview Lane behind the Library: 5.48 acres located southwest of Milanof-Schock Library. This park contains a full-size baseball field (Adult) with pressbox, concession stand, playground structure, asphalt walking path and onsite parking.

Scott Hershey is the Borough Manager and John Leaman is the Authority Manager. The Borough has its own comprehensive trash removal and recycling program. Mount Joy Borough Authority operates the area’s water and sewer facilities.

Little Chiques Park - 229 Park Ave.: There is a vehicle entrance from Park Avenue to this 40.9 acre park. Facilities include a parking lot, 10 large pavilions*, with picnic tables, basketball court, benches, sandbox, drinking fountains, and many large shade trees. This park is bordered by the Little Chiques Creek. There are walking and hiking areas, fishing access, swings, spring rockers for children, small child play structure, poles for volleyball net. No electricity available. *Pavilions must be reserved by calling 653-2300. There is a $25.00 fee for each pavilion reserved.

Cove Outlook Park - Mount Joy Township: Dedicated on June 6, 2009, located on Old Market Street across from LCCTC campus. 30 acres with trails, pavilions, multi-purpose athletic field.

High Street Square Park: This park at the corner of Main and High Streets contains a fountain, trees, shrubs and benches.

Florin Park - 151 N. Plum St.: This 1 acre park consists of 1 Pee Wee/Little League ball field with open space bordered by North Plum Street and Church Street.

The Lakes Park - 275 Lakeside Crossing: This 7 acre park is located at Donegal Springs Road and Musser Road. It contains Little League ball field, soccer field, pavilion (first come first served), picnic tables, benches, basketball court, tot lot (playground), and walking path.

Grandview Park - 300 Orchard Road: Approximately 12.3 acres. Consists of Pee Wee/softball in the southwest corner with the balance in open space. Bordered by Church Street, Orchard and Hill Street.

Rotary Park: Located between Fairview Street and Old Market Street, this 13 acre park, developed by the Rotary Club of Mount Joy, has a regulation soccer field, junior midget size baseball/girls’ softball field overlapped with an under 10 soccer field and a Pee Wee baseball/girls’ softball field. A hiking/biking trail traverses the park from east to west, with hopes that it will someday connect to the pathway to Mount Joy Township’s Cove Outlook Park. Rotary Park is owned by the Lancaster County Career and Technology Center, leased by Mount Joy Borough and facilitated by the Rotary Club of Mount Joy.

Borough Park - 301 Manheim St.: This 5.28 acres park is bordered by North Market Street, Barbara Street, Manheim Street (SR 772) and Park Alley. There are 4 tennis courts, ball fields for baseball and softball with concession stand, pavilion (first come first served), swing sets, basketball court and storage shed.

There are shade trees, benches and open space. Paved and stone parking lots are available. Kids Joy Land play area: Six weeks after fire destroyed Kids Joy Land, it was torn down on November 14, 2012. Plans are being made to rebuild the playground. To donate to the rebuilding effort, funds may be sent to Kid's Joy Land Rebuild Fund, c/o Union Community Bank, PO Box 567, Mount Joy PA 17552.

History Of Mount Joy

Besides the Indians who passed through the area, the first whites to come to the Mount Joy area were the Indian traders. These whites traded with Indians along the two branches of the Chiques Creek and the Susquehanna River. Following the traders came the settlers. (Although many old history books and histories written about Mount Joy say that Mount Joy was started as little villages, that is not correct.) Plantations were here first.

Hugh White bought and lived on his plantation as early as 1741. His plantation encompassed all of the present Mount Joy Borough as the borders were before the annexation of Florin and also that portion east of the little Chiques Creek in the Lefever Road vicinity. A second plantation called “Beautiful” was owned by John McCracken lay toward the Florin Ward, and a third owned by Thomas Baly in 1753 now encompasses the rest of the Florin Ward.

There were three main villages in the early 1800’s. Mountjoy (one word) was the village in the eastern part of today’s borough. Jacob Rohrer was the owner of this “housing development.” Richland, the western part of the original borough, was begun by John Bartruff. Springville (the Florin Ward) was laid out by Christian Hertzler. In between and around the three original villages, others plotted lots for sale and labeled these parcels. By the time Mount Joy Borough was formed in 1851, it incorporated Mountjoy, Richland, Wallickstown, Mountjoy Continued, Richland Extended, and Richland and Mountjoy Connected. Florin was annexed by the borough in 1963.

The first roads in the area were trails. Next came roads that were either muddy or dusty depending on the weather, but they had to be maintained, so they became known as turnpikes. A pike (pole) was placed across the road and the fee for “turning the pike” was about three cents. The present Main Street was one of these turnpikes.

Inns started to appear along the pikes.

Manheim Street was the first street, road, or Indian traders’ trail through the area. Old Peter’s Road (as it is still called in some areas) ran from the Schuylkill River to the Susquehanna River. The road did not curve to create New Haven Street but proceeded straight into Donegal Springs Road and then on to Bainbridge where there is a monument showing the end of the road. Trading was done in this area with the Conoy Indians. (If traders were

planning to trade with the Paxtang Indians and were traveling on Old Peter’s Road, they would have made a right turn at what is now the ManheimWest Main Street intersection and headed toward what is now Harrisburg.)

History is abundant in and around Mount Joy beginning with the Donegal Presbyterian Church in 1721.

This statue is a memorial to the ship “Mountjoy” that saved starving Scots-Irish of London-derry, Northern Ireland in 1689.

Twenty years later, these same people came to this area bringing their beloved name with them. Mountjoy Township was named first in 1759, followed by the village of Mountjoy in 1812. Mount Joy was incorporated into a borough in 1851.

The ship statue has emerged from the proceeds of Mount Joy’s sesquicentennial celebration held in May 2001. It was presented to the town as a gift to commemorate our shared heritage.

Donegal School District 2014

Donegal School District, in northwestern Lancaster County, is comprised of Marietta and Mount Joy Boroughs, East Donegal Township and approximately one third of Mount Joy Township. Donegal School District’s close proximity to major metropolitan areas makes the district very desirable for commuters, as we are located 24 miles east of Harrisburg, 85 miles west of Philadelphia and 90 miles north of Baltimore. The small town atmosphere coupled with the easy commutes to the major cities has made Donegal an attractive place to raise a family. Enrollment in the district is anticipated to continue to increase over the next decade.

Donegal consists of two elementary schools: Donegal Primary School (grades K - 2), 1055 Koser Rd., Mount Joy, and Donegal Intermediate School (grades 3 - 6), 1177 River Rd., Marietta. The secondary schools include: Donegal Junior High School (grades 7 and 8), 915 Anderson Ferry Rd., Mount Joy, and Donegal High School (grades 9 - 12), 1025 Koser Rd., Mount Joy. In addition to the recent facility upgrades, Donegal School District has made many strides to meet the academic challenges posed by a global economy. Additional Advanced Placement courses have been added - Project Lead the Way, a STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering, and Math) program is now in both the junior high and the high schools: Microsoft Specialist Certification is available at the high school; new mathematics, language arts and English, social studies and science curricula are offered from kindergarten through grade 12.

The District features: Newsletters for the entire community, updated website, use of PA Educator.net for teacher recruitment, and an emergency notification system.

Staff Development is ongoing and has included: Learning Focused Schools training for all teachers, support for the implementation of the new curricula, ongoing professional development for special education staff on new legislation, technology training to facilitate instruction, emergency management and safety training and school law updates for administrators.

Milanof-Schock Library Free public library service to the residents of the Mount Joy area was initiated in 1962 as a Girl Scout community bookmobile project. In 1964, a storefront library opened at 22 East Main Street in Mount Joy in what is now the Higher Grounds Cafe. The increasing community need for library services had outgrown the small Main Street facility by the 1990s and a major capital fund drive to build a new facility was undertaken.

Spurred on by two large bequests from the estates of Mount Joy residents Anne Milanof and Clarence Schock, the community raised $1.2 million. A new building, dubbed the Milanof-Schock Library, was opened in 1999. This expanded library facility allowed for expansion of its service area beyond Mount Joy Borough to the residents of the five municipalities that comprise the Donegal School District: East Donegal Township, Marietta Borough, Mount Joy Borough, Mount Joy Township and Rapho Township.

The majority of what the library offers is free of charge but it is not free of cost.

Since government funding covers only about half of its operating expenses, generous contributions by government, indi-

viduals, businesses and associations throughout the Donegal region, Lancaster County and beyond have helped the Library to sustain its programs.

Partnerships with the Library System of Lancaster County, chambers of commerce, universities and other not for profits provide valuable services and expertise. The Library also generates income via fundraising efforts from its Friends Group, annual mail campaigns and benefit auction, passport and notary processing, and a used book store. As the Donegal Region has evolved and grown, the Library has experienced an extraordinary increase in the use of it facility and services by community residents of all ages and socioeconomic strata. The Library received over 85,500 visitors, and over 214,000 print and electronic materials were borrowed by area residents.
