Food Pantry Continues Providing Vital Community Service

Honey Brook Food Pantry (HBFP) continues to provide a vital service to the community, particularly during the COVID-19 pandemic.

During the distribution on Dec. 9, 430 people, including 140 children, visited the pantry, which was the highest attended distribution since March. In addition to food, the pantry gave away 400 toys and 150 coats, thanks to local organizations that held food, coat and toy drives in the community. Among those who provide food donations to the pantry on a regular basis are parishioners from St. Peter Catholic Church in West Brandywine.

In his holiday newsletter, Ken Ross, HBFP board chair, thanked volunteers for helping to support the pantry’s mission, which is to “serve local families in need while empowering them toward independence.”

“Thanks to the work of our incomparable volunteer team, we have not missed one distribution date and actually added more remote distributions and served more emergency needs than ever before,” he stated.

second Wednesday from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. and on the fourth Wednesday from 4 to 6:30 p.m. Like other food distribution centers, the pantry now uses a drive-through format.

Additional programs by the pantry include a Weekend Kids’ Backpack Program, which offers food for 60 children, and a Nutritional Supplement Program for children up to age 3, which currently provides special foods, diapers and supplies to 58 families.

This past summer, the pantry’s “Garden for Life” program included two community gardens - one at the Honey Brook Borough Park and the other at the Honey Brook Township Building. The program provided more than 200 pounds of broccoli, bush beans, tomatoes, sweet peppers, radishes, zucchini, turnips, beets and lettuce for clients during food pantry distributions twice a month from May through November. Between distribution days, clients and volunteers were also invited to pick produce at the gardens as needed. Eight local gardeners also contributed to the program by donating produce from their home gardens. The program will continue next spring.

Community members are invited to help out the pantry by donating nonperishable food items. Items will be accepted on the day of the next scheduled distribution, Wednesday, Dec. 23, between 8 a.m. and 4 p.m.

Food items most needed include spaghetti noodles and sauce, pasta, rice, boxed macaroni and cheese, instant potatoes, cereal, peanut butter, jelly, soup, canned fruit, tuna, canned stew and pasta meals. Monetary donations are also being accepted at www.honeybrookfood pantry.org/donate.

The French & Pickering Creeks Conversation Trust is inviting the community to participate in a new holiday tradition by decorating a tree with natural ornaments at the Thomas P. Bentley Nature Preserve, located at the corner of Valley Way and Warwick Furnace Road, Glenmoore.

The tree is a native red spruce that sits on a hill at the preserve.

“This tree is a stand-alone tree that was planted last year,” explained

Kersten Appler, director of development and operations. “It is the only one on the hillside and was planted for this purpose. Because it’s solo, it is just beautiful.”

Visitors can park in the preserve parking lot and then take a short hike to the tree. The route to the tree passes Anna’s Oak, reportedly the largest oak tree in Pennsylvania.

“There is parking relatively close (to the tree), so you can make it a short walk,” Appler said, adding that visitors may also park farther from the tree to make it a longer hike.

Also offered to visitors is a “photo booth.” “You and your family can take a photo and have the tree in the background,” Appler said, noting that the tree stands at about 15 feet and will grow each year.

Make Good Use Of The Christmas Tree After The Holidays

Many families have chosen to display a live Christmas tree this season, which means more trees will be disposed of after the holidays.

However, people are encouraged not to throw their real Christmas tree into the trash. Rather, trees can be reused or recycled in other ways, such as for mulch or to create a bird feeder.

After all decorations, hooks, garland and tinsel strands have been removed, homeowners can place the tree in their backyards for the birds. “My favorite way to recycle your real tree is as a bird feeder,� said Dawn White, education director at the Green Valleys Association at Welkinweir. “You can lay the tree on (the ground) or stand the tree in the ground and decorate it with strung peanuts, popcorn or cranberries to attract a variety of birds.�

People may make additional edible “ornaments� for the tree. “You can

make pinecone bird feeders with peanut butter or vegetable shortening rolled in birdseed, then hang them on the tree,� White said.

Other options include adding fresh orange slices, suet cakes and strings of unsweetened cereal such as Cheerios.

All these items will attract birds, which can sit in the branches for shelter.

Ornaments can be replaced as needed throughout the winter months to provide a good food supply for all visiting birds to eat.

In addition, Christmas trees are biodegradable, which means their branches may be removed and chipped. “You can mulch your tree to enrich your soil for spring plants,�

White noted.

Another suggestion provided by the National Christmas Tree Association is to sink the tree into a local lake or pond because trees can create a safe space and feeding area for fish. People should always check with local officials

or the landowner for permission.

Locally, as part of the second annual Blue Marsh Lake Trees for the Fishes event, trees may be dropped off from Saturday, Dec. 26, through Tuesday, Jan. 12, 2021, between 8 a.m. and 6 p.m. Drop-off locations include State Hill Boat Launch, 599 Brownsville Road, Sinking Spring, and Church Road Access Area, Old Church Road, Bernville. Trees will be used for aquatic habitat enhancement and other wildlife habitat resources. For more information, readers may search for “2nd Annual Trees for the Fishes� on Facebook.

Some areas in eastern Pennsylvania, including Berks County, offer tree recycling programs. Readers may contact their local municipalities to see if the service is offered.

For next year, homeowners are encouraged to think about purchasing a tree with a rooted ball that can be planted in the yard after Christmas.
