For the past nine years, David’s Drive 831 (DD831), a nonprofit organization dedicated to improving the lives of veterans, has held a Christmas Gift Wrapping Extravaganza at the Coatesville Veterans Affairs (VA) Medical Center, where volunteers wrapped 1,000 gift boxes containing personal care items, snacks and more that were distributed to veterans.

Because of the coronavirus pandemic, however, DD831 was forced to cancel the event.

Instead, the charity is collecting gifts that will be distributed

by VA staff members to homebound veterans and those who reside at the VA center, as well as to veterans who are part of the VA’s homeless outreach program.

them to the VA and they will distribute them to veterans,” said David Turner Sr., founder and president of DD831. “Because of COVID ... we will not put (our volunteers) at risk, so all items will be presented to veterans with the highest regard for safety.”

Turner explained that homebound veterans living in the community will receive a tin of cookies, and inpatients living on the VA campus will get a canteen book, which is a coupon book that they can use to purchase items in the VA canteen. Walmart gift cards will be given out to veterans in the HUD-VASH (Housing and Urban Development VA Support Housing) program.

Residents are invited to write personal cards or letters to be included with the gifts.

“We would like to encourage (people) to write a letter to a veteran, wish them a happy holiday or just share a personal story,” Turner stated. “Let them know that the community is thinking of them.”

Monetary donations will also be accepted, which will also help the charity to purchase items in bulk at a discount.

As the board and staff of the Reading Symphony Orchestra (RSO) continue to monitor COVID-19 and coronavirus developments in the area, the RSO has decided to cancel its New Year’s Eve concert. The concert had been scheduled to take place on Thursday, Dec. 31.

veterans and donated vacuum cleaners and microwaves for veterans in the HUD-VASH program. Most recently, DD831 purchased 50 electric razors and chargers for veterans living in the VA’s Community Living Center.

Berks Dog Search Reunites Lost Pets With Their Owners

stated. “If people find a dog and they give it a new home, that is not legal. Pennsylvania has a law that dogs are property, so you cannot keep someone else’s property.”

People who find a lost dog can turn it over to a rescue group until the owner is found.

“If we have nowhere to go with a (found) dog and a person can’t hold it overnight until the owner is found, we reach out to the rescues,” Olsen said. “It’s not every rescue that can just take a stray. They have to apply for an extra license.”

Olsen noted that once the group has a sighting of the animal, it tries to lure the dog to the same location. “A dog will

establish a safe spot,” she explained. “We set up a food station and if you can get him eating, you have a chance of getting him to come back. The dog drives the bus, and we are passengers.”

Olsen said that the group has learned many lessons about dog searching after years of experience. “We are not professionals, but we have learned a lot. We are confident in our abilities and in what we do,” she said.

Helping to reunite lost pets with their owners is the goal of Berks Dog Search, an all-volunteer organization that has been operating in Berks County since 2013.

Through its Facebook page, the group posts information about lost and found dogs, and it provides free informational flyers that dog owners can post in their neighborhoods. In addition, Berks Dog Search sends out volunteers to help find lost dogs by utilizing trail cams and by setting up “traps” with food and water. The group also owns microchip scanners for when a stray dog is found.

The Facebook page was started by Susie Olsen and Diane Sereny, who are page administrators, along with other Berks

County residents. The organizers met through dog rescue organizations.

Olsen explained that pet owners should not panic and call for a search party to try and look for their dog when it first goes missing. “The first thing is to make sure the dog has access to come home. Open the gate, put out food and water and keep lights on at night,” Olsen said. “Do not flush the area with big search parties. If the dog is skittish, they will not come to a stranger. A dog will tend to stay local if people are not chasing it. They usually go in a circle. They start coming around and, believe it or not, a lot of them find their way home.”

Those who contact Berks Dog Search through the Facebook page will be provided with flyers. “Once they are proofed by the owners, I run copies and deliver them. I have three or four sets in plastic sleeves,” Olsen noted.

When a lost dog is found, some people may want to keep the animal, but Olsen emphasized that the dog is someone else’s pet. “Don’t come on our page looking for a dog to adopt.

Live Trees Popular This Holiday Season

According to the NCTA, the temperature of the water used to fill the stand is not important and does not affect water uptake. The stand should be checked daily to make sure that the level of water does not go below the base of the tree. With many stands, there can still be

water in the stand even though the base of the tree is no longer submerged in water.

Other tree preservation tips offered by the NCTA include the following: keep trees away from major sources of heat, including fireplaces, heaters, heat vents and direct sunlight; use lights that produce low heat, such as miniature lights, which will reduce drying of the tree; always turn off the tree lights when leaving the house or when going to bed; and monitor the tree for freshness.

With the coronavirus pandemic keeping people indoors and limiting their activities for much of the year, many families have turned to getting a live Christmas tree this holiday season.

According to the National Christmas Tree Association (NCTA), more people are interested in cutting down Christmas trees at local tree farms this year as a way to enjoy the fresh air and create a fun family outing. In addition, many people have started purchasing fresh trees earlier than normal. Those who typically wait until the last minute to buy their trees may have a more limited selection than in previous years.

Locally, Dan and Patt Collmann of Collmann Christmas Tree Farm in Elverson have seen the increased trend of purchasing live trees firsthand. “People came out earlier and they want their Christmas season to start earlier because of the pandemic,” Patt said.

the Battle of Brandywine on Sept. 11, 1777. The actions and events leading up to this battle spanned approximately 35,000 acres over portions of both Chester and Delaware counties, as well as New Castle County in Delaware.

Viewers of the webinar will learn about new finds in the battlefield’s southern region.

These are places from the 18th century which still exist, including buildings that are still lived in and roads that served as British marching routes. These sites have been identified through the work of community members, a military historian and archaeology consulting team, and various historic organizations.

Additionally, the Planning Commission will debut the Southern Brandywine Battlefield Strategic Landscapes Plan for the Crown Force Approach, Encampment, Northern Column Flank, and Eastern Column Advance areas, which encompass New Garden, Kennett, East Marlborough, and Pennsbury townships as well as Kennett Square Borough and a portion of New Castle County.

Presenters will unveil a summary of next steps to study battlefield strategic landscapes in eastern battlefield combat areas in portions of today’s Pennsbury, Pocopson, Birmingham, Chadds Ford, Westtown, and Thornbury townships.

These activities will be funded through an American Battlefield Protection Program grant.

He also volunteered his time with Relay for Life, set up mobile dental checks for students and donated to many school fundraisers. He even marched in the Elverson Halloween parade in tooth-shaped costumes. A statement by Dr. Wallace can be found at the previously mentioned website.

Chappelle, a social studies

teacher at TVHS and a TVSD alumnus, began teaching in 2014, and that same year brought Mini-THON to Twin Valley. Mini-THON is a branch of Penn State University’s THON, which raises money for pediatric cancer awareness.

Chappelle organizes the annual Mini-THON dance marathon every year in April as well as other fundraisers, including gift wrapping at a local outlet mall, car washes and Laps for Leukemia. Under Chappelle’s leadership, the TVHS MiniTHON organization has raised more than $111,000

The objectives of the contest are to promote the beauty and versatility of wool fabrics and yarns; to encourage personal creativity in sewing, knitting, and crocheting with wool fabrics and yarns; to recognize creative skills; and to develop life skills, including being responsible for one’s self, being a good sport, accepting judges’ decisions, and learning about and appreciating diversity. Each entrant constructed at least one wool or wool-blend garment using knitting, crocheting, and/or sewing skills.

Schreiner, from Penryn, created a two-piece ensemble. Her straight-cut, tan and black plaid skirt is cut below the knee and features a sewn-in slip for added comfort. It has an invisible zipper and faced waistline with a pleated lower back, and the pleats are cut on the bias. Her coordinating vest utilizes three different wools, bound buttonholes, piping, decorative stitching, and buttons. The vest pattern was cut from an actual garment rather than a commercial pattern.

Riviello, from Birdsboro, is a first-time participant in Make It With Wool. Mentored by her great-aunt and her grandmother, she made a wool crepe dress. Riviello and her mentors chose to make a navy blue garment, but remove some of the color to create a gradient. Riviello made a practice muslin to test the pattern that they designed together. The dress has facings and a handstitched hem.

Martin, of Birdsboro, created a blue coat with a modern silhouette. Called a car coat in the 1950s, this three-quarterlength style is now known as a swing coat. The sharkskin blend used by Martin is 85% wool and 15% silk. Her coat features front origami pockets, raglan sleeves, traditional lapels, and one designer button. Recently retired, Sheila is a first-time Make It With Wool participant.

The state contest was held in October, and a virtual fashion show and awards program was held on Oct. 31.

Due to the pandemic, the contest was held in a virtual and mail-in format. Contestants shipped or hand-delivered their ensembles. They also provided a video that showed them modeling their garments and answering a few questions typical of inperson judging. They also provided still photos of their ensemble.

Contactless Amish Farmland Tour Offered The Amish Experience, a guided bus tour company in Lancaster County founded in 1959, has announced that in order to serve those visitors who are concerned about getting on a bus with strangers, it has developed a completely contactless option for the traditional 90-minute guided Amish farmland tour.

A small FM radio transmitter was installed in the Amish Experience bus, so that everything the guide says into his or her hands-free microphone in the bus is broadcast over a vacant frequency on the FM dial, thus allowing customer to drive in the safety and comfort of their own vehicles, following the bus down the scenic back roads, with the live, in-the-moment narration of the guide coming through their car’s speakers.

The only thing a customer must have in their vehicle to enjoy the contactless option is an FM radio.

There is a fee per car. People may make a reservation online and check in on their phone upon arrival, so no actual tickets are exchanged and the guest does not have to enter any buildings in order to take the tour. They are isolated from people they do not know, yet they can have a fully guided, narrated tour of Lancaster County farmland. A stop along the way is made at an Amish roadside stand and farm-based shop, for people to shop for locally-made crafts, baked goods and treats, if they choose.

The contactless Amish farmland tour will be available for a noon departure on Saturday, Dec 19; Tuesday, Dec. 22; Wednesday, Dec. 23; Thursday, Dec. 24; Saturday, Dec. 26; and Sunday, Dec. 27. Reservations must be made online at www.amishexperience.com.
