Hopewell United Methodist Church (UMC), 852 Hopewell Road, Downingtown, will hold a free traditional Christmas dinner with turkey and ham on Tuesday, Dec. 25, at 2 p.m. The event is open to the public. The meal is free, but those who plan to attend are asked to preregister by visiting www.hopewellumc.org or by calling the church office at 610-269-1545. Free shuttle bus transportation to and from the dinner will be available at the church’s community center, The Well, 107 W. Lancaster Ave., Downingtown. The shuttle will transport people to the meal from 1:30 to 2 p.m. and back to The Well from 3:30 to 4 p.m. CHRISTMAS SERVICE

Garden Spot Village, 433 S. Kinzer Ave., New Holland, will continue to host its annual holiday open house in the Train Room on Saturdays through Dec. 29 and on Thursday, Dec. 27, from 1:30 to 4 p.m. The open house is suitable for visitors of all ages. The HO-gauge train layout includes Thomasville and the “Talk With Thomas” activity. The O-gauge train layout includes waterfalls, a drive-in movie theater, a vehicle dealership showroom and more. Both layouts provide plenty of train action complemented with detailed scenery. The open house is free and open to the public. Christmas Open House To Feature Mansion Tours By Francine Fulton
Volunteers and staff members at St. Mary of Providence Retreat Center in Elverson are busy decorating the site’s mansion in preparation for a Christmas open house to be held on Sunday, Dec. 16, from 1 to 5 p.m. During the event, visitors will be able to tour the 67-room mansion, known as Langoma, which is a Native American term that means “homestead.” A fee will be charged for the guided tours, with separate prices set for adults and for children age 12 and over. Children under age 12 will be admitted for free. The mansion was built in 1894 by Joseph Potts, whose family members were local ironmasters. Joseph’s great-great-grandfather was John Potts, the founder of Pottstown. Tour guides will take visitors through Langoma, which has 183 windows,
20 fireplaces and 22 bathrooms. The home’s attractions include staircases made of marble, onyx and alabaster and a stained-glass window made of Tiffany glass. “We will have people stationed at different places throughout the house and they will explain that particular area,” explained Sister Ann Hubler, a member of the Daughters of St. Mary of Providence. The building will be decorated with numerous Christmas trees, greens, floral arrangements, candles, poinsettias and more. “We have Nativity scenes to remind us of Jesus and the true meaning of Christmas,” noted Sister Ann. During the event, children will be able to meet with Santa in a room decorated just for them with elves and other figurines. Parents are invited to take photos of their children with Santa, who will sit in front of the fireplace to hear the children’s Christmas gift lists. See Open House pg 2

Theater To Stage “Miracle On 34th Street” “Miracle on 34th Street” will be presented at Steel River Playhouse in Pottstown this month. December marks the 10th anniversary of the nonprofit theater company. The play was the first production held at Steel River, and some of the original cast members and set designers are returning for the revival performance. While the shows on Friday through Sunday, Dec. 14 through 16, are sold out, tickets are still available for the performances on Thursday and Friday, Dec. 20 and “Miracle on 34th Street” will be presented 21, at 8 p.m.; on Saturday, at Steel River Playhouse in Pottstown.
