wall in the train room at Tel Hai Retirement Community has been transformed into a 20-foot mural depicting a scenic view of the surrounding Chester County countryside.
Painted by Tel Hai resident Loretta Gable Englerth, the mural was unveiled and dedicated on Nov. 22 by members of the Tel Hai Train Club, which uses the room to house its extensive model train layout. The display, which is located on the second floor of the StoneCroft Commons on the Tel Hai campus, features HO-, Sand O-gauge railroad cars that run through miniature communities, as well as a large G-gauge train that runs
During the dedication, Englerth spoke about the process of creating the mural. “My dad was a train (enthusiast), and he had a big train set in his basement. I got so inspired (when I visited the train room) here that I (realized) I had do to the mural,” she said. “I (originally) drew some sketches of rolling hills and barns. I thought about what I see when I step outside this door, so I decided to put more of Tel Hai in it.”
Features of the mural include a pond and farm that can be seen near the Tel Hai campus, grazing horses and cattle, an Amish farmer and his horse plowing a field, an Amish buggy and geese flying overhead.
Englerth noted that her grandchildren added their own personal touches to the mural, including rabbits, a fox and a salamander that can be seen in the pond.
“My youngest grandson is into dinosaurs, so we have a skeleton of a dinosaur in the dirt. My other grandson painted the cat (to represent) the many feral cats we have here,” said Englerth.
It took Englerth, who offers watercolor painting instruction at Tel Hai, about six months to complete the project. “I did it on paper first and then I drew it on the wall and then I came back and painted on top (using acrylic paint),” Englerth said. She added that varnish will be added to the painting after the club’s holiday open houses.

Train club member Bob Stevens said that Englerth worked closely with club members to make sure the mural was exactly what they wanted.
“It is unbelievable,” Stevens said of the mural. “Everything on the mural you can see at the
Tel Hai property - the farms, the houses. She added some personal items, but it’s all about Tel Hai and the beautiful area we live in.”
The community is invited to view the mural and train layout during holiday open houses,
which will take place from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. on Saturdays, Dec. 10 and 17, and Thursday, Dec. 29. Admission is free.

The food box was provided by It Takes a Village, a nonprofit organization that has established 13 food boxes, also called blessing boxes, throughout Chester County and one in Berks County. Each box contains the motto, “Take only what you need. Leave behind what you can.”
The community food box at the township building is the fourth box that has been put into place by Nathan Lutz, a member of St. Mark’s Episcopal Church. The first box was installed by Lutz at the church, located at 1040 Chestnut Tree Road, Honey Brook, in November 2020. In January 2021, Lutz installed a second box at the Village Library, 207 N. Walnut St., Morgantown, and a third box at the Hearts in Hands Community Center, located in the Indian Run mobile home park at 1 Lenape Way, Honey Brook.
The most recent food box installation was approved by the township. “(Township secretary/treasurer) Deb Kolpak thought it was great idea and she was on board, and It Takes a Village posted that they needed someone to install the box at the township building,” said Lutz. “It Takes a Village donated everything. The township provided the location and their permission to put it there.”
During the installation process, Lutz dug a three-foot hole and then cemented the post that holds the box into the ground. “I put in some food just to get it started,” Lutz said. “Just like the other ones, anyone can put food in it or take food out.”
Lutz emphasized that only nonperishable items should be placed in the box. Shampoo, toothpaste and other toiletries are also acceptable.
Items that should not be placed in the boxes include fresh food, frozen food, homemade food, repackaged food and food in glass jars, which may freeze and break. No clothing, toys, towels or shoes should be placed in the boxes.
According to It Takes a
Village, the community food box program is designed to help the homeless, people who are experiencing hard times or hungry school students. The boxes are unlocked and can be accessed by anyone at any time.
For more information about the program, to learn the locations of the other food boxes, to make a donation or to suggest an additional food box location, visit www.ittakesa villagecc.org/food-boxes.html.
The 31st annual Turkey Bowl was held on Thanksgiving morning at Tel Hai Camp and Retreat in Honey Brook. The event included a 5K race and a 1-mile children’s fun run.
“We had a beautiful morning for our annual Turkey
Bowl race. I think this year’s weather was even nicer than last year, which helped to encourage more runners,” said Bruce Gregory, camp director.
Participants in the event were of various ages, backgrounds and locations. “I believe our youngest registered participant this year

Noelle Sprenkle of Birdsboro was presented with the Dr. Jack Hampton Award for Excellence in Business at the annual Michaelmas convocation at Saint Peter’s University, Jersey City, N.J.

was about 2 years old and the oldest was 80,” noted Gregory. “We had great showing from Honey Brook and surrounding towns, as well and many families that have made (participating in the Turkey Bowl) a tradition. We also had many from out of state from all over the country ... visiting family for the holidays. We had many new runners this year.”
He noted that about 40 volunteers helped at the event, and 26 local businesses sponsored or donated to the race. “Many of our sponsors and donors also either participated in the race or volunteered,” Gregory noted.
Second Wind Race Timing provided the chip timing for the event. “This year, we chipped both the 5K race and the 1-mile children’s fun run,” said Gregory. “I believe the children enjoy starting under the big blue arch. Our Turkey Mascot was here again, and

the kids enjoyed taking photos with him. Santa Claus was busy up North this year and could not make it.”
The top overall male winner was Noah Taylor, 19, of Mohnton, with a time of 17 minutes, 8 seconds. “This was his second year in a row to take the top spot, his third time total,” Gregory noted. The top overall female winner was Aubrey Ressler, 14, of New Holland, with a time of 20:44.
“We had 352 finishers in the 5K race (and) 77 finishers in the 1-mile kids’ fun run. They all did a great job in their race, even the really young ones, who pushed through to the finish line,” Gregory said. “It was good to see some of the parents run alongside the young ones encouraging them on.”
The top overall male finisher in the 1-mile run was Elias McConaghay, 11, with a time of 6:41. Elias and his family, who hail from New York, have
been running in the race together for several years. Hannah Yoder, 11, a resident of Indiana, was the top overall female finisher with a time of 7:20. This was her first year taking part in the event.

A Richie’s Wish Angel Tree has been placed near the entrance of the Elverson Fitness Club, 51 S. Pine St., Elverson. The tree is decorated with red tags, each bearing the name of a child in foster care along with the child’s gender, age, clothing sizes, interests and Christmas wish. Anyone who would like to take a tag and fulfill the wish of a foster child may stop by the fitness center during regular staffed hours and take a tag or two to help fulfill these wishes. The regular staffed hours are Mondays through Thursdays from 9 a.m. to 7 p.m., Fridays from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m., and Saturdays from 8 a.m. to 2 p.m. New and unwrapped gift items should be dropped off at the Fitness Club by Thursday, Dec. 8.
The Richie’s Wish Foundation was established to honor the memory and legacy of
Richie, a child who spent 1,390 days in foster care before being adopted at age 14. He died in 2018 at the age of 23 from complications of cystic fibrosis. In his multiple moves from one foster home to another, Richie would often lose the few possessions he had accumulated and rarely had access to age-appropriate toys. To help rectify this situation, during the last year of his life, he helped create the Angel Tree program to provide these toys to children in foster care who did not have them. Some children have requested new clothes as well. Monetary donations are also welcome.
For more information on Richie’s Wish, visit www.richieswish.org.

The second annual event will be held in the TVHS cafeteria. “Last year we had 40 vendors and this year we already have over 50,” noted Maddie Morgan, the fundraising overall at TVHS, as well as a member of the Four Diamonds Mini-THON Student Leadership Council. “It’s a great way to get your holiday shopping done,” she said.
A variety of vendors will be on hand, many offering homemade crafts. “People will sell candles and wreaths, jewelry, herbal teas and crocheted items, and there will be some (home-based businesses) like Mary Kay and Tastefully Simple,” said Maddie. “(Vendors) pay a registration fee to get a table.
Some sign up for two tables.”
Santa Claus will be at the vendor sale from noon to 2 p.m. “Kids will be able to sit on Santa’s lap for pictures. We will take the photos and (print them on-site) and also send them digitally,” noted Maddie. A nominal fee will be charged for the photos.
Members of the MiniTHON club will sell refreshments, and they will also greet and assist vendors. Proceeds from the food sales and vendor registration fees will go to Four Diamonds. Donation containers for the charity will be set up around the sale, and there will be an informational booth about the organization.
“We will have a tri-fold setup. All of our fundraising totals will be up there, and we will explain what Four Diamonds is and (their efforts) to combat pediatric cancer,” said Maddie.
There are still a few vendor spots available. A link to register can be found at www.face book.com/TVHSminithon in a post dated Nov. 1.
The goal of the TVHS MiniTHON club is to raise funds for Four Diamonds. The main fundraiser of the student-run club is its Mini-THON, which is a dance marathon modeled after the Penn State THON that raises money for families with children being treated for cancer at Penn State Children’s Hospital.
Last year, Maddie was the top fundraiser in the club, raising $2,458. As the 2021-22 fundraising overall, Maddie is now in charge of creating, setting up and seeing through all of the club’s fundraising events throughout the school year.
In her role on the Leadership Council, Maddie serves as an advocate and leader for Four Diamonds and MiniTHON and will be one of the representatives for the more than 90,000 students who are part of the organization.
Twin Valley High School is located at 4897 Twin Valley Road, Elverson. Those who attend the vendor sale are asked to enter the TVHS lobby doors to access the cafeteria. For more information, visit the aforementioned website.
