While the Christmas at Joanna celebration gives visitors a chance to enjoy holiday shopping and music, sample seasonal foods and beverages and warm up by the bonfire, the event is also an opportunity to learn about the traditions and history of the local iron furnace complex.

The Hay Creek Valley Historical Association (HCVHA) will present Christmas at Joanna on Friday, Dec. 2, from 5 to 9 p.m. and on Saturday and Sunday, Dec. 3 and 4, from 4 to 8 p.m. at Historic Joanna Furnace, 1250 Furnace Road, Geigertown. During the event, visitors will be transported back to 1872, when the furnace was owned and operated by the Smith family.

“We always (celebrate) 150 years from what year we currently are in,” explained Mark Zerr, HCVHA executive director. “Basically, the 1870s were the most prosperous times at

During the event, the Joanna Furnace mule stable will be transformed into the parlor of the Victorian mansion of Ironmaster L. Heber Smith and his wife, Ella Jane Grubb Smith, who are holding a holiday party. Zerr noted that every effort is made to make the celebration as authentic as possible. For example, visitors may notice the antique English Staffordshire china on the dining room table. The china is on loan from Gary Kurtz of Elverson.

The historic site’s buildings will also be open for touring. More than 1,000 glowing luminarias will light the walkways between the buildings. The luminarias will be lit each evening by volunteers from Boy Scout Troop 543, Plowville.

New this year, live metal casting demonstrations will take place each evening in the casting house,

where visitors will see aluminum Christmas stars being poured. These limited-edition stars will be for sale in the office/store building.

Also featured will be Victorian dancing, a live Nativity presented by Moving Communities to Christ (MCC) Church each evening from 6 to 8:30 p.m., traditional wagon rides around the complex, a Kids’ Santa Craft Workshop, face painting, arts and crafts and a children’s light maze. Local musical groups will perform around the bonfire, which will be tended by members of Boy Scout Troop 241 of Plowville.

Homemade foods offered for sale will include sausage sandwiches, hot dogs and hamburgers, pork and sauerkraut with mashed potatoes, macaroni and cheese, kettle corn, grilled chicken sandwiches, soups, chili and homemade “furnace fries.” New this year will be a pork barbecue and macaroni bowl and holiday cupcakes offered for sale by Troop 543G of Plowville.

The annual Christmas in Birdsboro celebration will take place on Saturday, Dec. 10, from 4 to 8 p.m., with the hub of the activities centered at Main Bird Park, 226 N. Water St., Birdsboro.

Visitors to the park will find a sale of crafts, food trucks and children’s craft activities. “This year we are adding a Polar Obstacle Course, a giant inflatable snow globe and a mechanical reindeer, which is like a mechanical bull,” said Christen Thompson, president

of the Birdsboro Parks and Recreation Department. “Santa will be brought in on a Birdsboro-Union Fire Company fire truck at 5:15 p.m., and he will be in the gazebo (and available for photos).”

There will be live music in the park, including several groups from Daniel Boone Area High School District, including the district chorus and high school jazz band. There will also be performances by Turning Pointe Dance Studio, Abundant Life Church and Threefold Blessing. There will be a bonfire in the park and free wagon rides through town.

Hoopert is a resident of Birdsboro and is majoring in physical therapy.

Congregation members from local churches will present a live Nativity, First Street Players will have roaming carolers and there will be a photo booth set up in the park.

The day will conclude with a Christmas tree lighting at 7:45 p.m., followed by fireworks at 8 p.m.

Christmas in Birdsboro is being planned by an event committee led by the Birdsboro Parks and Recreation Department, local pastors and representatives from community organizations.

Local businesses have also come on board to sponsor many of the events. “A lot of local groups have come together to make this happen,” Thompson said, adding that planning for the event began in August.

Fireworks will conclude Christmas in Birdsboro at 8 p.m. on Dec. 10.

The day will also include a continuous showing of the movie “The Polar Express” and the sale of food and beverages, including homemade chicken corn soup. Soup can also be bought by the quart to take home.

The craft show will feature 17 vendors, all of whom hand-make the items they sell. Crafts for sale will include honey, beeswax cosmetics, chocolates, tote bags, purses, wallets, baked goods, inlaid cutting boards, tiles, jewelry, wire sculptures, soy candles, wreaths, note cards, quilted items, pressed flowers, Swedish embroidered hand towels, seasonal items and more.

There will also be a silent auction. The prizes will be items donated by the vendors, as well as gift baskets from church members.

The centerpiece of the event will be the display of trains. The model trains are of various gauges and types, and sets will be constructed of differing materials.

“Congregation members

bring in their displays and set them up in our fellowship hall,” said Gwen Sweatlock, one of the event organizers. One of the displays is made entirely of Lego blocks, including the railroad track, the railroad cars, the buildings and all of the scenery.

“That’s always a favorite,” Sweatlock noted.

All are invited to watch “The Polar Express.” The movie, based on the children’s book by Chris Van Allsburg, is about a young boy who embarks on a magical adventure to the North Pole on Christmas Eve on the Polar Express, while learning about friendship, bravery and the spirit of Christmas.

“It is played on a TV, and there is a lot seating for the kids to enjoy,” said Sweatlock. “It’s a cozy spot with a few sofas. It’s nice for the kids to sit and watch the movie while their parents (shop) or look at the train displays more closely.”

The church sanctuary, which will be decorated for

the season, will be open throughout the event.

The Sunday worship service at Honey Brook Presbyterian Church is held at 10:30 a.m. Lift-Off, an intergenerational ministry, is held prior to the service from 9 to 10 a.m. It includes a light breakfast, a Bible study, an activity, singing and prayer.

The new group, which is led by pastor Sam Massey and congregation member Peg Dombach, formed in September. “It is an additional gathering that we have,” Sweatlock said, noting that about 20 people of all ages attend the group each week. “We recently created fleece blankets for some of our missions.” The group also packed shoeboxes for Operation Christmas Child.

For more information about the church and its activities, call the church office at 610-273-2848 or visit www.honeybrookpres.org. More information is also available by searching for “Honey Brook Presbyterian Church” on Facebook.

Piercing Word Sets Christmas Production

Piercing Word’s Christmas production, “The Advent of Christmas,” will tour across Lancaster County and beyond throughout the holiday season.

The mission of Piercing Word is to ignite passion for the Word of God in the heart of the church.

training (PT), followed by a time of instruction and hands-on activities.

“We introduce them to paramilitary disciplinesmarching, standing at attention and saluting. We introduce them to physical fitness and we move into our law enforcement curriculum,” Long explained. “The first 30 minutes is a military drill and PT, and then there is an hour and a half of scenario-based training.”

Scenarios may include reenacting a traffic stop or responding to a mock call. “We make it fun and interactive. We try and let the kids do a lot of hands-on stuff in a safe way,” said Long. “They are (learning) and having fun at the same time.”

This is the third session of the Hill Impact Program, which is named for the Pennsylvania State Police Academy, known to locals as The Hill because of its location in Hershey. The

course is open to students from all geographical locations.

“For the first session, we had some students who drove three hours one way to attend,” Long pointed out.

He said that the students often come away from the program realizing that law enforcement officers have chosen their career because they want to serve the community. “As troopers, we put the community above ourselves. It’s amazing how fast they learn that and how quickly they catch on,” Long said.

The program also encourages a relationship between young people and law enforcement officers. “We have a core group of instructors that will be here every Tuesday. The kids not only are familiar with the faces, they develop a mentorship out of it as well,” Long noted. “We urge the kids if they have questions or need anything to reach out to us.

We supply them with our contact information and we have question-and-answer sessions. It’s a great way for us to have that accessibility in the community.”

Long encourages students to register as soon as possible, since space is limited and

spots fill up quickly. Those who complete the course will take part in a graduation ceremony and receive a certificate. For more information about the program and to obtain an application, contact Long at ra-sprecruiter-acad@pa.gov or 717-497-4577.

Heltzinger Honored At Flower Show

Heather Heltzinger of Birdsboro participated in the 189th Philadelphia Flower Show in June, winning two blue ribbons and the Best of Blues award. She was a firsttime entrant in this show, which was the last of the outdoor shows.

In March 2023, at the

The Christmas craft market will offer items such as baked goods, candy, holiday décor, homemade soaps, stoneware pottery, hand-knit scarves, jewelry, candles and fresh Christmas wreaths. “This year, we added a second heated tent (for the crafts),” Zerr noted.

All proceeds will benefit the HCVHA, which supports the restoration and preservation of Historic Joanna Furnace, as well as the Tri-County Heritage Library. For additional information, visit www.hay creek.org or www.facebook .com/historicjoannafurnace or call 610-286-0388.

A Fresh Take On The Christmas Story

Behind the creativity in presenting the 2022 Journey to Bethlehem event at Woodcrest Retreat, is an enduring goal to keep the tale fresh, while acknowledging its unwavering truth. “It’s the Christmas story,” said Adam Fox, program director at Woodcrest. “It doesn’t change, but there are different ways to think it through.”

One aim of the event is to

make the experience more real for attendees. “Audiences understand what the characters are going through,” said Fox. “That’s what we want to help bring to life.”

Now in its 12th year, Journey to Bethlehem gives participants the opportunity to become part of the Christmas story as they follow Mary and Joseph from the time they receive the news that Mary will give birth to the Christ child to their arrival at the stable where Christ was born and beyond. Journey will be held at the retreat center, 225 Woodcrest Drive, Ephrata, on Fridays, Dec. 9 and 16, from 6 to 8:30 p.m. and on Saturdays, Dec. 10 and 17, from 5 to 8:30 p.m. Attendees are encouraged to dress warmly and wear appropriate water-resistant shoes on the hourlong trek. Although the event is familyfriendly, strollers and those with mobility issues cannot be accommodated because of the rugged landscape.

The live Nativity is interactive in that adults and children who attend may participate in specific scenes. As they travel with the characters from the Bible, participants will witness the walk to Bethlehem, where they will experience the disappointment of finding there is no

room at the inn. The journey will also take attendees to a marketplace, where they may spend a shekel to purchase raisins or crackers, and then to a field, where they will gather with shepherds to hear the angels announce Christ’s birth. Finally, visitors will arrive at a stable along with the shepherds, where they will all meet Joseph and Mary and baby Jesus. “Together they are in awe of how biblical prophecy foretold this event,” explained Fox. The final stop is now a live presentation that takes place in the palace of one of the wise men.

Fox noted that about 3,000 people attended the 2021 event. The cost to attend will

be discounted for children ages 4 to 16. Children age 3 and under will be admitted for free. In addition, a special price will be available to members of an immediate family living in the same household. Reservations may be made at www.woodcrestretreat.org /events/journey. Readers who have questions may call 717738-2233.

All funds raised by the event will benefit the ministry of Woodcrest, a nonprofit retreat and camp center that serves more than 1,900 children each year. In the case of inclement weather, those planning to attend Journey to Bethlehem should check the aforementioned website for information.

The Whitford Charitable Classic, in partnership with the Chester County Community Foundation, recently delivered proceeds totaling more than $120,000 to 11 local nonprofit charities in Chester County. Each grantee will receive at least $10,000 for its organization.

This year’s Whitford Classic took place the weekend of Sept. 23 to 25. The event brings together Whitford Country Club members and a network of supporters and grantees from the community to play in golf, tennis and pickleball tournaments, with the highlight being the Whitford Gala and Auction.

After putting the Classic on hold in 2020 and hosting a modified event in 2021, the fundraiser returned this year with special guest Dick Vermeil, the NFL championship-winning coach and 2022 NFL Hall of Fame inductee, who served as the

honorary chair and donated his time, and his wine, to promote this event and raise funds.

Since its inception in 2011, the Whitford Classic has raised more than $1.2 million and awarded grants to more than 70 qualifying organizations. This year’s grantees are the Andrew Hicks Foundation, Brandywine Valley Active Aging, Communities That Care of Greater Downingtown, Downingtown Community Education Foundation, Friends Association, Great Valley Community Organization Internship Program, Hope Springs Equestrian Therapy, St. Mary’s Franciscan Shelter for Homeless Families, The Barn at Spring Brook Farm, The Fund for Women and Girls and Youth Mentoring Partnership.

Groups Partner For Coat Drive

LCH Health and Community Services distributed more than 300 coats with the help of the Auto Dealers CARing for Kids Foundation. The Auto Dealers CARing for Kids Foundation celebrated its 15th annual New Coat Program. The local effort saw LCH partner with Concordville Subaru and Nissan.

Approximately 180 auto dealers located throughout the five-county region of greater

Philadelphia were teaming up for this year’s New Coat Program. A new winter coat remains one of the most requested items via local service agencies. Through the effort, a record 58,239 brandnew winter coats were slated to be distributed this fall to children in need who reside in Bucks, Chester, Delaware, Montgomery, and Philadelphia counties. Coats were to

be distributed through a network of more than 350 nearby social services agencies, YMCAs, homeless shelters, school districts, and more. LCH served the children of southern Chester County on Nov. 3.

Kevin Mazzucola, executive director of the Auto Dealers CARing for Kids Foundation, noted that this was the foundation’s 15th year of participating.
