According to Mark Zerr, HCVHA executive director, 1875 was a prosperous time not only for the country, but for the ironmaster’s family and the residents of the Joanna Furnace community as well. “They celebrated the holiday and gave thanks that the furnace was busy providing income to so many families,” he stated. “Plus,

People in need of nonperishables are invited to visit local food-sharing boxes that have been established in the area. The boxes are regularly stocked with essentials like canned goods, pasta and other staples.
A Little Free Pantry can be found at Living God Lutheran Church, 3200 Horseshoe Pike (Route 322), Honey Brook. According to Julie Funk, church council president and a board member of the Honey Brook Food Pantry (HBFP), the box

donated by the church congregation.
She noted that there is also a place where visitors can write down their needs, such as sugar-free items or gluten-free products. The box also provides additional information about HBFP, including its distribution hours, for people in need of additional help.
“Our pantry is alive and well. It has been embraced by the church. We fill it every day. And we receive notes from people who need special items,” Funk said, noting a small quantity of cat and dog food is also included. “We provide cereals and

The 34th annual Turkey Bowl will be run on Thanksgiving Day, Thursday, Nov. 27, at Tel Hai Camp & Retreat in Honey Brook. The event will feature a 5K cross-country race that will take participants through the camp and around the lake. The event will also include a 1-mile children’s fun run.
This year’s event will begin with registration and race packet pickup from 7:45 to 9:20 a.m. in the camp’s dining hall. The fun run, which is open to children age 12 and under, will begin at 9:10 a.m. Parents may run alongside their child in the fun run at no charge. The 5K race will follow at 9:40 a.m.
Second Wind Race Timing will provide chip timing for the 5K race again this year. Online registration and mail-in registration forms can be accessed from the Turkey Bowl page of the camp’s website. Online registration will be open until the end of check-in on race day. Participants will need to register online before they arrive or when they arrive using their cellphones.
According to Bruce Gregory, camp director, last year’s participants had to brave running and walking through the rain.
“We had 373 finishers in the 5K race and 46 finishers in the 1-mile children’s fun fun,” he reported. “Considering it was a rainy morning, we had a good turnout. We are hoping for good weather this year.”
The 5K is a 3.1-mile race that will cover a mixture of paved, gravel and grassy paths, including some hills. The kids’ fun

run will stay on the main campus.
Children who complete the fun run will receive a finisher’s medal. First-place trophies will be awarded to the overall female and male runners of the 5K, and medals will be given to the top three finishers in various age groups.
Last year, Frankie Disilvestro of Honey Brook was the first male finisher in the 5K, with a time of 16 minutes and 42 seconds. The overall female winner was Laura Posh of Morgantown, with a time of 20:33.
Gregory said the race has become a popular Thanksgiving Day tradition in the area. Both local runners and out-of-town visitors for the holiday participate in the event. “Besides the Honey Brook areas, I know we have runners from the Downingtown area, the Gap and Oxford areas and the New Holland area,” he stated, adding, “We are sponsored by over 150 local businesses and individuals who are listed on the Turkey Bowl page of our website.”
Proceeds from the event are used to benefit Tel Hai Camp & Retreat, which is celebrating 75 years of camping ministry this year. According to a history of

Among the participants who battled the rain during last year’s Turkey Bowl are Jack Taylor of Mohnton (front) and David Rishel of Gordonville (back).
the camp, “Tel Hai” Camp, meaning “Hill of Life” in Hebrew, was founded in 1950 and incorporated in 1951 as an independent, nonprofit, Christian camp.
The board of directors, comprising members from Maple Grove Mennonite Church in Atglen and Conestoga Mennonite Church in Morgantown, developed a camp program for urban and local children. A farm was purchased north of Beaver Dam Road in Honey Brook, and the camp was started in a farmhouse. In 1956, the camp was moved to the woods on the south side of the road. In 1996, another 40 acres was added to the east of the site.

Today, the facility includes a gymnasium; a miniature golf course; a gaga court; an archery range and rifle range; a swimming pool; a climbing wall; and a challenge course, which includes a giant swing and zip line. The camp also offers banquet and luncheon facilities and offers retreat programs for churches, Christian schools and other related organizations.
Special events include a Mother & Daughter Spring Getaway offered in May and a Dad & Lad Camp offered in June.
Tel Hai Camp & Retreat also offers events that are open to the community, including spaghetti dinners and an annual vendor and craft fair. Information about the activities can be found at http://www.facebook .com/TelHaiCampRetreat.

the ironmaster L. Heber Smith and his wife, Ella Jane Grubb Smith, just welcomed their third child.”
During Christmas at Joanna, the site’s mule stable will be transformed into the Victorian mansion of the Smiths. The candlelit parlor will feature a freshly cut Christmas tree, and Smith family re-enactors will be busy in the kitchen making cookies and holiday treats. Other HCVHA historians will be playing
games and reminiscing about past Christmases by the fireplace. Guests are invited to interact with family members to learn more about the family and life in the iron furnace community.
“Each of the guests who visit the ironmaster’s mansion will be treated with a homemade cookie,” noted Zerr. “We have Hay Creek volunteers that made over 100 dozen cookies so far.”

Victorian dancing will take place at the event in a large, heated tent. On an outside stage in front of a large bonfire, the Hay Creek Valley Gold Band will perform various old-time music while the Hay Creek Dancers will entertain visitors with period dances. Guests will also be invited to step onto the dance floor and participate.
The Belsnickel, a fur-clad Christmas figure who rewards well-behaved children, will make an appearance at the bonfire to visit with children and give out treats.
Traditional wagon rides will be offered, as well as a new Christmas express ride. “We are going to be running our Apple Barrel Express ride at Christmas,” noted Zerr. “The little kids can get on, and it will circle around the site across the pathways. We will also have a Christmas light maze, a multicolored light maze that kids and families can stroll through and figure out to get from the start to the end.”
The historic buildings will be open for visitors to explore, and more than 1,000 luminarias will light the furnace walkways.
Homemade foods served throughout the event will include sausage and pulled pork sandwiches, hot dogs, hamburgers, pork and sauerkraut with mashed potatoes, macaroni and cheese, a pork barbecue macaroni bowl,
soups, chili and homemade furnace fries. Beverages will include hot chocolate, hot mulled cider and coffee. Freshly made apple crisp, kettle corn and roasted nuts will also be available to purchase.
MCC (Moving Communizes to Christ) Church will present a live Nativity. “There will be three different stations that tell the story,” Zerr noted. “At the first station, you are greeted by an angel.”
The Christmas Craft Market will offer items such as baked goods, cookies and candy, assorted holiday décor items, crafts and handmade wood items. “We have heated craft tents, plus we have an open-air Christmas market that is filled with vendors,” Zerr added. “It’s a great way to pick up things for holiday gift-giving.”
Visitors will also have an opportunity to win gift baskets with certificates donated by area businesses and vendors at the Christmas market.
An admission fee will be charged for adults. Children age 12 and under will be admitted free. There will be free on-site parking. All proceeds will benefit the HCVHA, which supports the restoration and preservation of Historic Joanna Furnace, as well as the Tri-County Heritage Library.

The community food box at the township building was put into place by Nathan Lutz, a member of St. Mark’s Episcopal Church. Lutz also installed a box at the church, located

at 1040 Chestnut Tree Road, Honey Brook; at the Village Library, 207 N. Walnut St., Morgantown; and at the Hearts in Hands Community Center, located in the Indian Run mobile home park at 1 Lenape Way, Honey Brook.
According to www.ittakesa villagecc.org/food-boxes.html, the food boxes are a great resource for the homeless, people who have experienced hard times and hungry school students. The boxes, which operate on an honor system, are unlocked and can be accessed by anyone 24 hours a day.
It is recommended that people donate canned goods with pull tabs since members of the homeless community who visit the box may not have access to a can opener. Items in glass containers are also not recommended since they can burst in cold temperatures.
