SERVING THE LOCAL COMMUNITIES SINCE 1954

Quilting Group Seeks Volunteers, Fabric Donations By Francine Fulton

Members of the Mission Quilters at Lutheran Church of the Good Shepherd in Coatesville are seeking some extra hands to help with their efforts. Volunteers are needed to help “tie” the quilt layers together during meetings of the group, which are held on the second and fourth Thursdays of each month from 1 to 3 p.m. “If you can tie a knot, you can do this,” said Jean Broderick of Elverson, one of the group leaders. As part of the process, a needle and thread are used to pierce the three quilt layers, which include the top and the back with the batting in between. Similar to sewing on a button, the needle and thread go through each square of the material several times and the thread is eventually tied off. “ We could really use a lot more (help),” said Broderick, who noted that

the group has been meeting for more than 10 years. The completed quilts, which measure 60 by 80 inches and are composed of 11-inch squares, are donated to Lutheran World Relief (LWR) as part of its Mission Quilt program. According to www.lwr.org/quilts, Mission Quilts are used by residents of impoverished countries for bedding, as simple tents or floor coverings or to carry infants. “We send (the quilts) to a warehouse in Maryland, and Lutheran World Relief sends the quilts to wherever they are needed,” Broderick said. “Most of ours have gone to India. “We have a number on the box when we ship them, so we can track it that way,” she added. In 2017, the group donated 24 quilts to LWR, and so far for 2018, the members sent 33. “ We have seven in progress right now,” Broderick said. See Quilting Group pg 7

Sarah Diamond, 17, a senior at Twin Valley High School (TVHS), recently earned the Venturing Summit Award, the highest award that a youth can earn in the Venturing program.

“It’s not necessarily harder, but it’s more involved. It’s more high adventure,” said Sarah Diamond of Elverson when describing Venturing, the co-ed division of Boy Scouts of America that was founded in 1988. “It’s the same activities (Boy Scouts) do, like rock climbing and kayaking, but it’s aimed for older kids, 14 to 21.” Sarah, 17, a senior at Twin Valley High School (TVHS), recently earned the Venturing Summit Award, the highest award that a youth can earn in the Venturing program. The Venturing Summit Award is the equivalent in status to the rank of Eagle Scout in Boy Scouts or the Girl Scout Gold Award. Like the criteria for Eagle Scout rank and the Gold Award, one of the requirements for the Summit Award is to plan and lead a community service project. Sarah’s project was to hold a “Leave No See Summit Award pg 11
