PJP II To Hold Virtual Auction, Trivia Night BY FRANCINE FULTON

ecause its annual silent auction fundraiser was canceled due to the coronavirus pandemic, Pope John Paul II Regional Catholic Elementary School (PJP II) in West Brandywine will instead present a virtual silent auction, culminating in a trivia night that is open to all area families. Bidding for the silent auction will start on Monday, Nov. 9, and end on Saturday, Nov. 14. The trivia night will take place on Nov. 14 from 6:30 to 8 p.m. A fee will be charged per household to play trivia, and prizes will be awarded to the top three teams at the end of three rounds. host. “There is a company we found called TriviaHub,� said Kelly. “There will be a host, and there is automatic scoring.� The three trivia topics will be Disney, general knowledge and “All Things P.� Participants will be asked to pick their household team names before competing. “The questions will be multiple choice and then after you choose your answer, it goes on to the next question. There is a two-minute break while the scores are being calculated,� said Kelly. “There are also tie-breakers. If (several) people get (the answer) right, the fastest would win.� Kelly said that pivoting the annual auction to a virtual event has made it possible for all families to enjoy taking part together. “Normally the auction is a parent night out, but this year since everyone is home, we thought, ‘Why not make it a nice family event?’� said Kelly. “We’re hoping to keep the community together.�

said Kate Kelly, who is co-chair of the event along with Jenny Reece and Coree Brecker. “We have a Disney trip, a Pocono weekend and (Bishop) Shanahan (High School) gave a basket of spirit wear. Each day we are adding more items.� “We also have restaurant gift cards,� she added. “(Restaurants) are struggling, so people can use the cards to take their whole family there or for takeout.� Participants can bid on items as many times as they want, and they will be notified via text message or email if they are outbid. “The bidding is anonymous, so once the auction closes at about 9:30 p.m., the winners will be notified by email,� Kelly explained. The winners of two additional items, a wheelbarrow of cheer and a PJP II tuition discount, will be announced on Monday, Nov. 16, being selected through random drawings. For the trivia night, families will be able to play online with a live

Hickory House Nursing Home, 3120 Horseshoe Pike, Honey Brook, will hold a benefit chicken barbecue on Friday, Nov. 13, from 3 to 6 p.m. All proceeds will benefit the E.L.F. Education Fund, which was established for Emily Lefever, 12, who lost her mother, Connie, to COVID19. Connie was a licensed practical nurse who worked at Hickory House for 27 years. Kauffman’s BBQ dinners available at the event will include a half-chicken, a baked potato, applesauce, a roll with butter and a beverage. The meal will be takeout only, and people will be able to drive into the Hickory House parking lot to pick up their dinners without exiting their cars.

According to Cathie Thompson, director of business development at Hickory House, Connie contracted COVID-19 in May and died on June 2. Connie was a graduate of Downingtown High School and the nursing program at Technical College High School, Brandywine Campus. “She was sweet and a wonderful nurse. This has been very sad for us here at Hickory House,� said Thompson. “In an effort to help Emily in the future, our director of nursing, Nicole Del-Mese, has headed several
