Boone Area Library Welcomes New Director By Francine Fulton
“Times change. We change and the way we do things changes but the main thing is that (libraries) have the same mission - which is to provide free access to information, whether it’s in books or on the computer,” said Ryan McCrory, the new director of the Boone Area Library in Birdsboro. “That’s what we’re here for. That core mission remains the same.” McCrory, who began his new position in late August, applied for the job in June after viewing a job posting on the Berks County Libraries website. He then participated in an interview via phone and video chat with the library’s board of directors. “(The job) fit what I needed, and I think in many ways I fit what they needed and what they were looking for,” he stated. McCrory, who most recently worked as a library assistant for Seattle Public
Libraries, noted that although he saw photos of the Boone Area Library on its website, he did not visit the facility prior to the start of work. “At the end of July, I came out here to look for a place to live and I drove through Birdsboro,” he recalled. “I did not see the inside of the building until my first day.” He said that he was pleased with the size of the library, which includes a community meeting room, a teenager center, a children’s area, a kitchen and the Boone Bookstore. “It’s much larger than it looks like from the outside. I was amazed by the space,” he said. “I would really like to find ways to utilize (the space) and do more programs.” Current programming offered at the library includes Teen Movie Night, Family Movie Night, story time for children, the Cliffhanger Book Club and a Mahjong group, among other activities. An upcoming event will be story time See Boone Area Library pg 4
