Students Take Part In Day Of Service By Francine Fulton
While visitors were previewing auction items and enjoying chicken barbecue meals on Oct. 18 as part of the annual fundraiser for Conestoga Christian School (CCS), CCS students were busy taking part in the 2019 Service Day. Students also attended a mid-morning chapel with a theme of service. From 8:30 to 11 a.m., students from elementary through high school assembled 10,000 packets of food in conjunction with Meals of Hope, a food packaging organization that provides nourishing meals to people in need in the United States. The activity took place at Conestoga Mennonite Church, located across the street from the school. The meals were packed for the Twin Valley Food Pantry, which is housed at the church. According to www.mealsofhope.org, the organization provides several different varieties of food packets, including macaroni and cheese, cinnamon and apple oatmeal, pasta and tomato sauce and bean and rice casserole. CCS students packed a chicken-flavored rice and vegetable soup mix that becomes a nourishing meal when added to boiling
water. All the food packing materials were delivered to the church the week of Oct 14. Since each meal costs 40 cents, the students had to raise the needed $4,000 through donations. âWe are $800 short of reaching our $4,000 goal,â reported Michelle Parris, CCS admissions director. Those who would like information about donating to the project may email ken.parris@ conestogachristian.org or visit www.conestoga christian.net/service-day-2019. The church also served as the location for a chicken barbecue drive-through. âIn addition to packing meals, our middle and high school students (worked at) the church,â Parris said. âThis was a way of serving and showing our appreciation to the church for allowing us to use their parking lot, among many other things. We are not connected to the church, but we have a great relationship with them.â Students, led by Jack Greenly, CCS director of student life, completed projects at the church such as working on the flower beds and cleaning the church kitchen. Traditionally, those who would like to learn more about their faith would speak with their pastor, read related books or take part in a Bible study. Now, there is an additional way for people to get a new perspective about the Scriptures. Chester County resident Stephanie Rousselle recently launched a new podcast called âGospel Spice,â which strives to âspice upâ peopleâs time with God. People may listen to the podcast at www.gospel-spice.com, or they may download the episodes and listen to them on their phones, tablets or laptops. âA podcast is like a radio show, (and) itâs free,â Rousselle explained. âIt is something you download, and you can listen anytime you want on your computer, phone or tablet. Itâs accessible 24/7. It is the ultimate tool (for communication). See Podcast pg 5
