According to the charity, the tabs are worth money because they are sold to a local recycling company. “Last year, we were attempting to set the Guinness Book World Record, which is 6.2 million tabs donated over one year,” Habecker explained. “While we did not get the Guinness Book World Record, we demonstrated that every person can make a difference, and it begins with just one tab.” She said the effort is also designed to shine a light on Community Connections, a group that promotes the values of friendship, value and belonging. “Community Connections is a group of young
adults with and without disabilities coming together with their caregivers in friendship, fun and service to the community. That is our mission statement,” said Habecker. “We are inclusion-based and community-based.” Habecker’s son Joshua, who has cerebral palsy, founded the group in 2013. “It is a passion, a piece of my heart and love not only for my own children but for other young adults and their families, our community and our

Youngsters do not have to put away their Halloween costumes after a night of trick-or-treating. Instead, they are invited to take part in Field of Screams, a night of baseball that is being presented by the Twin Valley Baseball Association (TVBA). The event will take place on
Saturday, Nov. 1, from 3 to 6 p.m. at Caernarvon Township’s Friendship Park, 3287 North St., Morgantown. The first-time event is open to baseball players in age 8 and under, 10 and under and 12 and under teams. However, the games are for all players in the area, regardless of where they currently play. “It’s basically a Wiffle ball game, and they

WCR Center for the Arts, 140 N. Fifth St., Reading, invites community members to join its Knitting & Crochet Club, a gathering for yarn enthusiasts of all skill levels. The club will meet on Wednesdays, Nov. 5 and Dec. 3, from 6 to 8 p.m. in the WCR Gallery.
Each meeting will feature an informal mix of stitching, conversation, and sharing ideas. Participants may learn new techniques, exchange project tips, and enjoy the camaraderie of fellow makers in a relaxed gallery setting.
The program is free to attend, and participants should bring their own projects and supplies. Free parking is available in the lot behind WCR by turning onto Madison Avenue from Washington Street, and metered parking on Fifth and Walnut streets will become free at 6 p.m.
For more information, visit www.wcrcenter.org or follow the center on Facebook, Instagram, or LinkedIn.
community partners,” she said.
Group members take part in a variety of outings in the community, including a drum circle at the Birdsboro Community Memorial Center, bowling and dinners at local restaurants. They also take part in local Halloween parades.
“It’s all volunteer,” Habecker noted. “Any funds we receive - we do accept donations and do fundraising activities - go to the young adults and our activities and service projects in the community. We go bowling once a month, and we cover the young adults’ bowling and shoe rental. Once a month, we go to a restaurant, and we cover the young adults’ meals. We (recently) had a huge ‘Happy Fall, Y’all’ party completely free for families.”
Those interested in joining the group are asked to complete an information survey about their specific interests and special needs. “From that form that I email a list of activities for the month,” Habecker noted. “You are not expected to come to every event. It is solely based upon choice. We are growing and are constantly continuing to help meet the needs of our individual families and community.”
Community service projects, including the soda tab collection, are also part of the group’s activities. “(Collecting tabs) was a way for us to give back to another organization that makes a difference to so many,” said Habecker. “When my son was 4, he had surgery at Hershey Medical Center, and Ronald McDonald House had a family room that provided snacks and drinks and different things to support the families. They also have a house right across street where they provide housing at no cost. Several of our families utilized their services. Joshua and I started collecting soda tabs from our families, friends and schools and at church. We do it every year.”
She noted that after the group delivered the nearly 1 million tabs last year, participants celebrated by visiting Hersheypark. “We were so successful that we have decided to continue this service project for a second year and hope to beat our contribution,”
noted Habecker.
Group members also interact with residents of local senior centers. “We will do a craft with them and have lunch with them,” she said, noting that the group also made homemade valentines cards along with the Key Club at Daniel Boone Senior High School to distribute to the residents. “We want them to know that someone remembers them, cares and
loves them and they are not alone.”
For more information about the group or to learn about the tab collection, visit www.community connectionsberks.com or search for “Community Connections - Berks Inc.” on Facebook. Those with a large quantity of tabs can arrange for pickup by sending a Facebook message or emailing CommunityConnections Berks@gmail.com.
will play in their costumes,” explained TVBA president Jeff Green, noting the game may be modified depending on the number of registrations. “There will be one big game. If we need to break it up into two, one-hour games, we will do that. Everyone will get a chance to play.”
“There will be prizes for best costumes and Halloween-themed medals for the winning team,” he added.
Food vendors will also be on hand, including the Joanna Store food truck; Rollin Spuds, which will offer loaded french fries; and a vendor selling sweets, including cotton candy, cake pops and candied nuts.
There will also be a TVBA spirit wear table and an equipment exchange. “If anyone has old equipment, they can feel bring to bring
it. We are also purging our equipment stock,” said Green. “I have a big bin of gloves that are broken in, and it will all be free.”
Information will be provided for those who would like to register for the spring baseball and softball season. “We will have a link there to register early with multiple payment options,” said Green. “We offer a spring season and a fall season. This is the end-ofyear event. (The goal) is to get our name out there.”
The TVBA also plans to continue to offer more family-friendly activities. “We will have food trucks (at games) and more community events (in) partnering with the township. We can have sandlot games with a movie afterwards,” Green noted. “There may be a homerun derby for adults.”
Organizers hope that the upcoming event will get more youths interested in playing baseball or softball this coming season. “We are already gearing up for spring and propelling the TVBA and planning on getting the community involved going forward,” Green said, noting that about 200 youths from the Twin Valley School District play softball and baseball with TVBA. “(Field of Screams) is something fun for parents and kids and another use for their Halloween costumes.”

The Twin Valley Rotary Club has selected Twin Valley High School (TVHS) students Zachary Troutman and Cecilia Skoniczin as its Students of the Month for September.
Zachary is a member of the National Honor Society and has played for the TVHS football team for the past three seasons. Zachary was named Lineman of the Week by the Lancaster-Lebanon Counties Quarterback Club last fall and was also selected as an Academic All-Star.
He is also a shot put thrower for the track and field team during the winter and spring seasons and has earned medals on various occasions.
Zachary has taken numerous Advanced Placement (AP) and honors classes, including AP U.S.
history, AP biology, AP English language and composition and AP computer science. He thrives in his STEM courses at school and will be pursuing an education in that field. He is considering attending Penn State University to further his education after high school.
Cecilia holds various leadership positions within the music department. Not only is she the orchestra secretary, but also the vice president of the concert band and Tri-M Music Honors Society. She also participates in extracurricular ensembles, such as select choir and marching band.
This is Cecilia’s second year as a drum major for the TVHS marching band. In that role, she conducts the ensemble, facilitates rehearsals and serves as the bridge between staff and students. Cecilia was recently featured on 6abc Action News as a drum major and spoke on the band’s behalf. She also has a solo during the second movement of the show this year.
Outside of TVHS, Cecilia participates in honors festivals on the county and district levels. Cecilia is the president of the TVHS theater arts club and has served on the executive board for three consecutive years. She is now a National Honor Thespian, meaning she has dedicated more than 1,000 hours of her high school career to theater and developing her craft.
She plans to pursue a career in acting and theatrical production.
Each month during the school year, the Twin Valley Rotary Club honors two students of the month from TVHS. The seniors are selected by guidance counselors, teachers and staff members at the school.

When you spot a person wearing a jersey of a sports team that you love, you can’t help but connect with them. Just this past weekend, I saw an elderly man wearing an Eagles sweatshirt and I had to say to him, “Go Birds.” He
responded with a smile and the same sentiment.
No matter the age, race, religious background or political affiliation, sports unite us. Any group of strangers who share a love for a team and its players can strike up a conversation at any time or place.
It is not uncommon to see people talking game strategy while waiting in line for lunch meat at the deli counter or after church on Sunday.
Last year, when the Eagles were in the big game, we were shopping for snacks at a local grocery store and people began singing the Eagles fight song and chanting “E-A-G-L-E-S - Eagles!”
Although we were separated by aisles, everyone from meat and dairy to produce and the

self-checkout line took part. It was a great moment.
We love our players, even when the going gets rough. For Phillies fans, the end of the year brought a heartbreaking loss. No one will ever forget the season-ending play when the relief pitcher committed a catastrophic error in the 11th inning, resulting in a walk-off win for the Dodgers.
But as much as we complained about the player, the incident forced us to look at the human side of baseball.
Right after the game, players fled to his side to offer him a word of consolation. Even the coach told him to keep his head high, stating, “We win as a team, and we lose as a team.” Many Little League coaches used the incident as a teaching moment.
Sports also teaches us life lessons about discipline, teamwork and how to handle both success and failure. And these qualities are not limited to players on the field.
Sports also bring people together. Even the most unlikely fans at a ballpark or stadium become friendly, united in a common goal. We feel the losses, and we rejoice in the victories.
So next time you see a person wearing a hat or jersey of a sports team that you follow, whether it be a professional team, a college favorite, a local high school team or even a Little League Baseball team, say hello and share a smile and celebrate the unity that sports offer. And as always, “Go Birds.”
mobile accessibility a top priority. Department and service icons align with Chester County’s updated branding, and the Health, Emergency Services, and Parks and Preservation Departments now feature enhanced pages that highlight public health updates, emergency preparedness tools, and information on the county-owned parks and trails.
A “Community” section gives county demographics, county history, a list of municipalities, and interactive maps for schools and trails. The “How do I...” feature leads to highly searched services including the purchase of dog, hunting, and
fishing licenses; applications for marriage licenses, mail-in ballots, and passports; property searches; public libraries; and directions on signing up for county news and emergency notifications.
Chester County has been recognized nationally as a Top Ten Digital County, which is attributed in part to the functions of the www .chesco.org website and the ongoing enhancements to services available through the website.
Some of the most-visited pages include jury service, active emergency incidents, records searches, marriage licenses, and seasonal selections such as election information and vaccine clinics.
