The event was in partnership with the Governor Joseph Hiester Chapter of the National Society of Sons of the American Revolution (NSSAR), the William P. Duval chapter of the National Society of Daughters of the American Revolution (DAR) and the color guard. Shelley Klausman, a descendant

of Evans and a member of the DAR, spoke at the event. “The Evans family, one of the earliest established families in Berks County, has contributed to the prominence in peace and war,” Klausman said. “The family has always been noted for its honesty and integrity of its members, some See St. Paul’s pg 2

It’s important to interact with people whom you can relate to. T hat ’s one of the goals of St. Mark’s Evangelical Lutheran Church’s military ministry, which will hold its third annual pasta dinner on Friday, Nov. 6, from 5:30 to 6:30 p.m. at the church, 5 Brooke Manor, Birdsboro. “People you know are there. It’s a good time to have fellowship, meet people and talk to each other,” said Gene Arantowicz, a veteran who

The Boone Area Library will host its annual Wine Pull fundraiser on Saturday, Nov. 7, from 5:30 to 9 p.m. at the library, 129 N. Mill St., Birdsboro. The event will feature wine sampling , food, ar twork , a gift basket drawing and bingo, among other attractions. “Every year, we pretty much keep things the same,” said Rachel Stewart, library director. “We partner with Ridgewood Winery. They come and they do wine samplings of their wine, and then people can also either purchase bottles from them or (get) additional glasses throughout the night.” Included in the price of their tickets, attendees will have the opportunity to pull one random bottle of wine at the end of the night. The value of the bottle they pull may be higher or lower than the price of a ticket. “We have people donate, and then (the wine) gets all wrapped up so you don’t know what kind of wine you’re getting,” Stewart explained. “At the end of the night, the whole thing will fall and then people can just grab a random one.” Past items in the gift basket drawing include gift cards, coffee, a gym membership and an entire ’90s themed basket. Those who are interested in donating items should drop their donation off at the library by Monday, Nov. 2. The library is See Wine Pull pg 4

It denotes his service in the Revolutionar y War, as well as his later service as a private and clerk to Captain John Robeson in the Third Battalion of the Berks County militia. It’s really interesting.” The ceremony was years in the making. Klausman and company spent countless hours digging through family records and verifying facts with local historians and the historian general in Washington, D.C. “Every generation, you

have to have two documentations, like a marriage cer tificate or maybe a family Bible that someone has, and you have to track it down,” Klausman explained. “Unfortunately, the Welsh double-name their families. Evan Evans, I mean, if you try doing that for three generations, the only way you can do so is tedious. ... In fact, the name passed down so long that I have (another) great-grandfather that

fought in the Civil War, and he was Evan Evans.” After all of the research was done, it had to be verified with the historian general. After Klausman got that stamp of approval, she got a family bar number that will be with the descendants of her family forever. “It’s a pleasure,” she said. “After all these years of researching, I feel very close to him, even though it’s been 250 years.”

Chester County Connect Care (CCCC), a nonprofit medical care pregnancy center, will present its annual 5K run and Walk for Life on Saturday, Nov. 7, rain or shine, at Hibernia County Park, 1 Park Road, Coatesville. “This is one of the two main fundraisers that we host,” said Jessica Stoltzfus, marketing and event coordinator for CCCC. “We have had around 250 participants in the past, and then spectators on top of that.” Race-day registration will open at 8 a.m., followed by a welcome at 8:45 a.m. The 5K, professionally timed by 2L Race Services, will begin at 9 a.m., followed by the fun run and walk. “I t ’s a road cours e,” Stoltzfus explained. “Part of it is paved, and some of it is gravel. It goes through Hibernia Park, so we’re hopeful that by November, leaves will be turning with color, and it will be just a pretty course to go through.” Medals will be awarded to the top three overall finishers, as well as the top three male and female finishers for each age group and the overall male and female winners of the 5K. Medals and prizes will be awarded at 10 a.m. Youngsters in strollers along with dogs on leashes are welcome to be part of

the fun run/walk, which will not be timed and will cover less than a mile. There will be a “pup station” table set up with water bowls for four-legged friends at the event. Race snacks will be provided free of charge. “We will have some light refreshments for the runners,” Stoltzfus said. “We’re hoping to have coffee at the beginning.” There will be separate registration fees for the 5K and the fun walk and run. Participants in the races will be given a T-shirt included in the price of registration on a first-come, first-served basis. Stoltzfus said that she’s hoping to maintain 250 runners for this year ’s race, which is being held at Hibernia Park for the fifth time. The fundraising goal for this year’s event is set at $65,000. Proceeds from the event will support the agency’s ongoing mission to provide medical, educational and material support to women and families facing unplanned pregnancies. All services are 100% free. Families are supported physically, emotionally and financially through basic pregnancy care, parenting education, peer counseling, a homeless prevention program and community referrals. “We provide pregnancy tests and ultrasounds to women who come to us

in need of them, and then also give some material assistance like giving formula, diapers, wipes, baby clothes, and we also have an educational arm,” Stoltzfus explained. “People come in for parenting classes, labor and delivery classes, things like that.” The organization has three offices, with the main office being located at 1028 East Lincoln Highway, Coatesville. The other two locations are at 139 W. Market St., West Chester, and 203 S. Walnut St., Kennett Square. Advance packet pickup

can be done by visiting the Coatesville office on Friday, Nov. 6. The location is open from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. on Fridays. More information about CCCC is available by visiting www.ccconnectcare .org or by searching for “Chester County Connect Care” on Facebook. Those with questions may call 610-383-0930. The race’s registration link can be found on the aforementioned website. “Everything goes towards providing our services to people in our building,” Stoltzfus said.

St. Mark’s from pg 1 runs the church’s military ministry. The ministry is active in the community, holding events like the pasta dinners, as well as “stand down” events on the fourth Saturday of every m o n t h i n Po t t s t o w n , where volunteers feed veterans and give them basic necessities with the help of the Veterans Coalition of Pennsylvania. The ministry also prepares care packages for veterans in need within the local community and helps drive veterans who live alone to their medical appointments. “If you take a veteran that’s elderly, you have a veteran that drives him,” Arantowicz explained. “It gives him someone they can talk to, relate to and share stories. Oftentimes, when these folks are sent to their doctor’s appoint-

ments or hospitals, they’ll be put in an Uber or with someone who’s not a veteran, and the Uber person won’t even talk to them.” For the pasta dinner, members of the church will prepare their finest pasta dishes to share with the assembled patrons. Arantowicz said there will be a capellini dish, chorizo pasta, spaghetti and meatballs, among other Italian specialties. Several desserts and pies, as well as juice, coffee, water and other refreshments, will be available. “People can go through the line, there’s salad and bread and that sor t of stuff,” Arantowicz said. “Everybody kind of makes their specialty. Just like a Christmas part when a family gets together, ever ybody makes their best thing and it’s a feast.” Everybody is welcome

to attend the dinner. A freewill donation will be collected; all proceeds will support the military ministry and its efforts. “ We have it all decorated out,” Arantowicz explained. “It’s got red, white and blue tablecloths and little toy soldiers. Then I have various flags that I bring out and hang for each branch of service.” T he re w i l l a l s o b e a baske t draw ing at the event, featuring patriotic items, candles, candies and some themed baskets. One highlight returning from last year ’s event is the prized chocolate turkey. “I’ve got a big , giant chocolate turkey that’s about a foot high,” Arantowicz said. “(It) seems to be the prized possession, because everybody seems to try and win that. ... It’s all in the spirit of raising

money for the things that we do.” The church is hoping for at least 100 diners at the event. On a projector screen at the dinner, there will be a looping slideshow that explains more about the military ministry and its causes. The dinner is held annually near Veterans Day, which is on Wednesday, Nov. 11, this year. A Goodwill Keystone Area Wisdom Opportunity Wealth (WOW) program

citizens at a retirement community or a bunch of preschoolers. Gilbert noted that feedback the organiz ation receives from teenagers is especially compelling. “Kids will say, ‘Can you please come back? We never knew this before,’” she said. “Their teachers touch on financial topics, but we go into depth about everything from the FAFSA to scholarships, renting your first apartment, what it looks like to get your first car.” WOW is unique to Goodwill Keystone, and the program can be offered on weekdays, evenings or weekends. “ We’ll come in over a lunchtime and do a program,” Gilbert said. “We’ll come in any time where we can reach the most people and that’s the most convenient for them.” WOW has offered programing to church groups, homeschool co-ops, residents of homeless shelters and domestic violence shelters, schools and more. “ W hatever the group wants, we can design our program to fit their needs,” Gilbert remarked. And WOW is always working to expand its repertoire of services. This fall, Gilbert is launching a new series of tech literacy courses, focused on how to use programs like Microsoft Word and Excel. She’ll bring a handful of laptops, a WiFi hotspot, a projector and a screen to provide the classes. “We don’t want anything to be a barrier to us coming in and doing a program,” she said. WOW has also begun offering programs focused on AI, the first Goodwill in

the country to do so, Gilbert said. “We’re working on breaking down the barrier of being scared or intimidated to use AI,” she said. “We talk about safety and privacy. We break it down so people can see how easy it is to use AI.” While some people may think AI is a topic suited for businesses or people in the tech industry, it can be a helpful tool for anyone, she said. “ We have a pro g ram called ‘AI at Home,’ where we show people how they can use AI for things like making a meal plan, setting a grocery budget, help with their résumé or creating an exercise routine,” Gilbert remarked. WOW programs can be one-time sessions or multiweek initiatives, depending on the topic. T he program is selffunded through grants and proceeds from Goodwill retail stores. Recently, Sen. James Malone awarded a $100,000 state grant to the program at Goodwill’s store and donation center in Elizabethtown. “I’m proud to have helped secure funding for a program that empowers people to achieve financial health by teaching them how to budget and manage their resources,” Malone said. “Goodwill’s WOW program meets people where they are through partnerships with organizations, like the Lancaster County Prison, to end cycles of poverty and give people a hand up into a better future.” Since its inception about three years ago, WOW has reached more than 2,000 See WOW pg 8

If you have questions about achieving financial stability, developing skills, understanding AI or navigating the tech world, Goodwill Keystone Area’s Wisdom Opportunity Wealth (WOW) is a great place to start. WOW offers one-on-one coaching, retirement and long-term planning , AI and tech literacy training, career and entrepreneurship guidance, budgeting and credit support and tools to keep you accountable. And all of its programs are provided free of charge. WOW began after Sue Soderburg retired from Goodwill as chief mission officer and wanted to leave a legacy program with the organization she’d served for more than 30 years. It started as an initiative focused on women and was called Women of Wealth. “In a lot of ways, women are still behind, especially when it comes to financial literacy,” said Taylor Gilbert, WOW program director. “We served a ton of women within the first and most of the second year of the program, but as word got out, there was so much interest in what we were doing, and we felt we were limiting the number of individuals we could help. We didn’t want to turn down anyone who wanted our services.” As Gilbert explained, the WOW program comes into a location - which could be a business, a school or any other group - and provides all programming, activities and take-home assignments, along with refreshments. “ T h i s i s n’t s o me o ne coming in with a PowerPoint, giving their presentation and then you never hear from them again,” she said. “Our first priority before educating people is building trust and building that relationship with them. We want to know, ‘Where are you at in your journey with this topic? What do you know? How can we help you?’” W i t h e a c h p ro g ra m , WOW works to present information that’s relatable to the audience, whether that’s a group of senior
