Lions Club Tractor-Trailer Stops In Morgantown

Pennsylvania Lions Club tractor-trailer made a stop at the Morgantown Crossings shopping center on Oct. 15, where members of the Christiana Lions Club with help from employees of Lowe’s of Morgantown, loaded the vehicle with supplies for hurricane victims in Louisiana.

Working with a Lions Club in Louisiana, the Christiana club was able to put together a list of needed items, which included laundry detergent, bleach, mops, work gloves, cleaning supplies and personal hygiene items.

All of the donations were sorted and placed in boxes by volunteers at the Christiana Lions Club building.

The boxes were then loaded onto trailers and brought to Morgantown, where volunteers and a forklift operator from Lowe’s loaded the

According to many travel polls, travelers are choosing small-town destinations for getaways and vacations. Not just now, because of COVID, but into the spring and summer of 2021. Fewer crowds, less traffic, unique culture, and friendly locals make visiting obscure locations more desirable than ever.

As the editor of Where & When Pennsylvania, a publication of Engle See EXPLORE pg 2 Printing & Publishing Co., Inc. (EPC), I quickly learned that many of us have little idea of what’s going on in our surrounding area, let alone across the commonwealth. That’s why we’re launching a new series in our community papers called EXPLORE Across Town, Across PA. Pauline H. Engle, 94, formerly of Mount Joy, went home to be with her Lord and Savior Jesus Christ on Sunday, September 20, 2020, at Pleasant View Retirement Community. Born in Maytown, she was the daughter of the late Harry E. and Ada N. (Fridy) Hershey. Pauline was the wife of Alvin S. Engle, who passed away on June 10, 1971.

Pauline was a graduate of the former East Donegal Township High School class of 1943. She and her husband, Alvin, co-founded Engle Printing in 1954 and Publishing in 1959. After Alvin’s death, Pauline and her children continued the business in which she was active until her retirement in 2009. Pauline is survived by two sons, Charles Engle, husband of Kathleen of Mount Joy, and Dennis Engle, husband of Lynn of Lititz; nine grandchildren; twelve great-grandchildren; and two brothers, Harry Hershey, husband of Joan of Brethren Village, and John Hershey, husband of Mable of Marietta.

She was preceded in death

by a daughter, Audrey Rutt, and two brothers, Robert and Charles Hershey.

When Alvin and Pauline founded Engle Printing, it was undoubtedly a partnership.

Alvin was a quiet, hardworking businessman who took care of planning, pricing, and production, while Pauline, more outgoing, did the hiring and dayto-day employee management. “She could never have done it without him, and he would not have done it without her,� recalled Charlie Engle, President of EPC. After Alvin Engle passed, Pauline decided to continue the family business with her children, who all agreed that they should pursue their parents’ dream. Before Alvin’s death, plans had already been drawn up for a new building where the company could expand. Two years after he passed, the family moved into their new facility on West Main Street. Later, a large production facility was added in West Hempfield, Lancaster County.

While Pauline may not have imagined that the business would become what it did, her

children had plans for further growth. “Even my father ‌ I don’t think he ever thought that we would go from seven people to 400 employees at the high point,â€? Charlie said.

She was proud of the company’s success, but even more so that all three of her children became actively involved in the business, each having at least one child who has chosen a career with EPC. Audrey, the eldest Engle sibling, served as EPC’s treasurer until her retirement one year prior to her passing in 2018.

Whether in business or on family vacations, focus on family was paramount to Pauline. She loved spending vacations with her siblings, her children, and her grandchildren at the beach, in Potter County, or at their cabin along the Susquehanna.

Besides family, relationships with friends were also important, as she entertained and traveled with them often.

When asked how he thought his mother would want to be remembered, without hesitation Dennis Engle, EPC Vice President, said, “For her strong faith.� Pauline was a member of Mount Calvary Church in Elizabethtown and was active

Expanding upon his mother’s Christian faith, Charlie reflected, “She would often say, ‘We have been blessed. It wasn’t just us; it was with God’s help.’� As a result, she gave back and supported many organizations in the community and beyond. Her example was the benchmark from which the Engle children carried on the business, and now the third generation draws from their grandmother’s tenacity and unwavering faith.

A memorial service honoring Pauline’s life was held at Mount Calvary Church on October 4, 2020, where the family shared fond memories of their mother, grandmother, and sister.

The Chester County Board of Elections has approved the polling place locations for the Tuesday, Nov. 3, general election. There will be 192 polling locations open throughout Chester County that will house all 230 precincts.

Due to the current COVID19 pandemic, a small number of polling places will not be open for the 2020 general election. Voters who are affected by a change a polling places will be notified by postcard. On the day of the election, signage will also appear at polling places that are not open, notifying voters where to go to cast their vote.

Polls will be open from 7 a.m. to 8 p.m. on Nov. 3, and all voters in line at 8 p.m. will be able to cast their ballot.

places by clicking on the Polling Places icon at www.chesco.org/elections.

Several COVID-19 preventative measures will be in place at all polling locations.

Signs will be posted at all polling locations encouraging voters to wear masks and to practice safe social distancing.

All polling places will be supplied with masks for poll workers, as well as Plexiglas shields, cleaning supplies and hand sanitizer. Special cleaning materials will be provided for cleaning the ballot scanners.

Extra poll workers staffed at the polling locations will be on hand to assist voters in line to maintain social distancing.

Every voter will be provided with a sanitized pen to sign the poll book, and voting

booths will be disinfected after every voter.

In addition to all of these measures, Chester County’s judges of elections, inspectors and poll workers are also trained on CDC guidelines and Voter Services guidelines to ensure the safety and health of all voters.

Voters who have requested a mail-in ballot, but decide to vote in person instead, must bring their entire mail-in ballot package - ballot and accompanying envelopes - to their polling place, where the judge of elections will spoil the mail-in ballot, allowing them to vote in person. If voters do not bring the mail-in ballot and envelopes with them, they will be given a provisional ballot to complete at their polling location.

Halloween On Main Street Downtown New Holland will host the inaugural Halloween on Main Street on Friday, Oct. 30, from 6 to 8 p.m. The purpose of the outdoor event is to provide an activity for children while observing CDC guidelines for COVID-19.

The public is encouraged to bring unwanted, expired, or unused prescription and over-

porch lights on. Trick-ortreaters should respect the decisions of their neighbors and refrain from knocking on front doors or ringing doorbells where the lights are off.

Trick-or-treaters are encouraged to take safety precautions. “I think trick-ortreating can happen safely if certain procedures are followed, such as distribution of prepackaged candy, candy distribution in a self-serve fashion like in a bowl or even person-to-person if people are wearing masks,� said Dr. Timothy Tam, a Berks County pediatrician. “Trick-ortreaters should also exercise social distancing when walking up to houses.�

In lieu of trick-or-treating, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) suggests attending outdoor events, such as costume par-

ties where people remain 6 feet apart, walking through a haunted attraction wearing a face covering, visiting outdoor pumpkin patches or having an outdoor Halloween movie night with family and friends who are socially distanced. “I think outdoor activities are ideal, especially if there are measures to allow appropriate social distancing,�

According to Cathie Thompson, director of business development at Hickory House, Connie contracted COVID-19 in May and died on June 2. Connie was a graduate of Downingtown High School and the nursing program at Technical College High School, Brandywine Campus.

“She was sweet and a wonderful nurse. This has been very sad for us here at Hicko-

Emily and her family plan to attend the barbecue, where they will receive a plaque honoring Connie from Life Care Centers of America. “One (plaque) will hang at Hickory House, and one will be given to the family,” Chris noted.

Social worker Mary Zebert from Hickory House recently spoke to Emily, and the

youngster was eager to share memories of her mother.

Emily stated, “She always worked hard and loved being a nurse. We had an amazing relationship. Anytime I needed her she was there and gave me the best advice. She was really funny - told me jokes when I was sad. She was the best mom I could ever ask for.”
