Morgantown/Honey Brook

Those who drive past the lake at Tel Hai Camp and Retreat in Honey Brook may come across a majestic site - a fleet of model yachts on the water with their colorful sails unfurled.

The sailboats are being operated by members of the Chester Springs Model Yacht Club (CSMYC), which was organized more than 12 years ago to “promote remote-control (RC) sailing and to encourage others to take up the sport, learn and have fun.”

The club currently has 22 members, who sail four times a month at Tel Hai Lake between April and November and take part in competitive races. “We have skilled craftsmen in the group who build their own boats,” noted club commodore John Stoudt, who builds, restores and collects the model yachts. Other members, he noted, buy their boats already assembled.

Club members, who pay a yearly membership fee to participate, come mostly from Chester County, although other members are from Montgomery and Delaware counties and the state of Delaware.

Stoudt explained that the ships are maneuvered on the water by skippers, who use hand-held batteryoperated controllers. “There are two (steering) servos in each boat. One servo controls the sails, and one the rudder,” he said. “You have to be a good sailor, understand the boat setup and sometimes do repairs.”

Grant Will Help Fund Honey Brook

Expansion

The Honey Brook Community Library will nearly double in size thanks to a $1.14 million grant that it received through the Department of Community and Economic

Development. The grant was presented to the library by state Sen. Katie Muth on Oct. 12.

In addition to library staff members and community members, participants in the grant presentation ceremony were Jennifer Spade, library director; Rocky Avvento, president of the library Board of Trustees; and Joe Sherwood, executive director of the Chester County Library System.

“I met with Rocky and Jennifer, and we talked about how much more this library could give the community if adequate space was available,” said Muth, who holds monthly office hours at the library.

“They presented a building program report that was prepared in February of 2019 deeming that the current square footage of the building was insufficient to serve the constituency effectively and deliver the over 275 programs that the library has to offer.”

Humane Pennsylvania will present the “Art for Arf’s Sake” auction on Saturday, Nov. 5, at the Reading Fairgrounds, 1216 Hilltop Road, Leesport. Doors will open at 5:30 p.m. Those who attend the event will be able to bid on a variety of items in both silent and live auctions, as well as enjoy food and beverages.

Church

Anniversary Celebration

Robeson Evangelical Lutheran Church, 3520 Plow Road, Mohnton (Plowville), will celebrate its 250th anniversary at a worship service and catered dinner on Sunday, Oct. 30. The festivities will begin at 10:30 a.m.

The congregation began with a group of Lutherans gathering in their homes in the 1760s and obtaining land from the family of William Penn to build a church and establish their congregation in 1770. The church building that now stands is the third church erected since that time.

An anniversary book with a condensed version of the church’s history, along with

advertisements from members, friends, and area businesses, will be available at the dinner. Anyone with a connection to the church is encouraged to attend the celebration. Reservations are requested for the dinner no later than Thursday, Oct. 27, by calling 610-856-7242 or emailing ddemarco@dejazzd.com. There is a fee to attend the meal. Former pastors and the spiritual son of the congregation will be present to share a few words. Entertainment will be provided by the Harmony Praise Choir.

Robeson Lutheran Church seeks to serve the needs of its community and to witness for Jesus Christ.

The theme of this year’s fundraiser is “The Dark Carnival,” and the event will take place under two large, heated big top tents. “We did a ‘Dark Carnival’ theme in 2012, so it’s the 10-year anniversary of that,” said Lauren Henderson Pignetti, director of development for Humane Pennsylvania. “(Because Humane Pennsylvania) is an animal welfare organization, it’s more of a sideshow feel than a circus. There will be fun house mirrors and really cool decor set up to give that dark carnival vibe. There will be an aerialist performing and a magician.”

Auction items will include trips, experiences and gift baskets, as well as one-of-akind artwork created by local artists. Some of the paintings will feature pets.

The silent auction is also

available online. Online billing was scheduled to begin on Oct. 21. “The silent auction is online for two weeks, and people can continue to bid during the first hour and 15 minutes of the event,” explained Pignetti. “The live auction is only available to those who attend the auction. It will start about 7 p.m.”

She said that the online silent auction will allow those who are unable to attend the event to participate. “We did our auction virtually in 2020 and had really good success with everything,” she said. “Last year, we made the switch to have the silent auction online.”

Proceeds from the event will benefit Humane Pennsylvania and its programs, which include pet adoption and animal rescue services and nonprofit veterinary

hospitals in Berks and Lancaster counties. It also operates the Danielle Ruiz-Murphy Center for Animal Welfare and Dog Park, a free public dog park, at 503 S. Center Road, Birdsboro.

Since 2005, more than $1.4 million has been raised by Art for Arf’s Sake.

All tickets must be purchased in advance; no tickets will be sold at the door.

4-H Horsemanship Clinic Slated

Volunteers are a crucial part of the 4-H program across the state of Pennsylvania. A particular need is in the Horsemanship Skills Program, which is a planned progression of horsemanship and handling skills, with an emphasis on safety and education.

A 4-H Horsemanship Skills Examiner Clinic will be held on Saturday, Nov. 12, at Line It Up Farm, Coatesville. The

clinic will include an overview of the 4-H Horsemanship Skills Program, implementation of county programs, testing procedures, records, examiner certification, and practice of skills with youths and horses.

Participants will receive current program information and supporting resources. Sessions will include discussion of frequently asked questions,

suggested activities, program needs, and future program plans.

Volunteers, extension educators, parents, and 4-H alumni are encouraged to attend to learn more about the 4-H Horsemanship Skills Program. Previously trained examiners are encouraged to attend. Volunteers may be involved in hands-on demonstrations, practice of skills, and group discussions.

Participants who wish to be trained as examiners must obtain appropriate clearances and bring a completed Examiner Recommendation Form with their Extension educator’s signature to the clinic.

Preregistration is required by Friday, Nov. 4. Contact Audrey Reith at alr5762 @psu.edu or 610-696-3500 for additional details and volunteer requirements.

Grant

“This grant will nearly double the size of the library,” she continued. “It will add more programming space, more community space, improve ventilation and do so much more than we ever thought possible.”

One of Muth’s first acts as state senator was to attend a library fundraiser, which is when she became acquainted with library staff members and the need for additional space. “She came to our Beef and Brew in April, and she explained that they get discretionary money to infuse in the community where needed and I put her in contact with our board members that evening,” Spade explained. After a series of applications, the library learned that the grant was approved.

The project is expected to be conducted in three phases, which are scheduled to be completed by early 2024.

The first phase of the project includes the construction of a new community center and a remodel of the main

library infrastructure, exterior and parking lot. The second phase entails the construction of a new children and young adults’ area. The final phase includes the construction of a new adult reading area.

“We need to finalize plans with our architect, who will then finalize plans with an engineer and then put (the job) out for bids and get the necessary permits,” said Spade, noting that the library’s capital campaign will continue. “The grant we got is for true building costs. We will need money (for) tables, chairs and shelves.”

Spade said that when the capital campaign started in 2019 it was just a concept and a plan on paper. “For the first time, it feels real,” she said. “I am so excited to tell our patrons who have supported us.”

County Health Survey Posted

The Chester County Health Department (CCHD) recently launched its community health assessment survey to assess the health and wellbeing of those who live, work, or go to school in Chester County. The assessment, conducted every three years, creates an opportunity to improve the health of Chester County residents. The information collected will help identify community strengths, prioritize health needs, and guide the development of a community health improvement plan.

The community health assessment is an opportunity for residents to let their voices be heard about what

matters most to them. A goal of the Chester County Health Department is to focus on issues and initiatives that communities feel are important. The assessment will be used to develop better, more accessible and equitable community health programs and services throughout Chester County.

The community health and wellness survey was developed with input from Chester County Health Department representatives, including nurses, health educators, grant administrators, emergency preparedness planners, and environmental specialists.

The survey takes a few

minutes to complete and asks questions about demographics, health behaviors, and issues that impact the overall health of Chester County communities. Relevant topics, such as climate change and COVID-19, were added to this year’s survey. Everyone age 15 and older who lives, works, or goes to school in Chester County is encouraged to complete the survey by Sunday, Nov. 6.

The survey is available in English at bit.ly/Healthy Chesco2022. A Spanish version is also available at bit.ly/SaludChesco2022. The results of the assessment will be shared with the community in 2023.

Blood Donor Eligibility Criteria Updated

The American Red Cross invites those who spent time in the U.K., Ireland, or France and have never tried to give blood due to concerns over variant Creutzfeldt-Jakob disease (vCJD), related to mad cow disease, to give blood. Recently, the U.S. Food and Drug Administration updated its blood donor eligibility guidance on vCJD, eliminating the deferral for those who spent time in the U.K., Ireland, and France between 1980 and 2001.

In alignment with FDA changes, the Red Cross began accepting donations from individuals who have not tried giving blood before due to the prior donation criteria. In combination with prior

eligibility updates in 2020 for those who spent time in other European countries, this new change effectively eliminates the deferral related to vCJD for all donors.

More people, especially those with type O blood, are urged to donate. Book a time

to give by using the Red Cross Blood Donor App, visiting www.redcrossblood.org, or by calling 800-733-2767. As a thank you, donors who give through Monday, Oct. 31, will be emailed an electronic gift card to a merchant of their choice.

Model Yacht Club

He noted that club members sail various types of ships, including schooners and Chesapeake Bay skipjacks. While racing, club members follow a specific course on the water.

Most recently, CSMYC hosted the 2022 U.S. Vintage Model Yacht Group 2022 National Championship Regatta Series. During the three-day event, club members and volunteers welcomed more than 30 skippers operating 70 vintage model yachts. The skippers were from 10 statesDelaware, Florida, Illinois, Maryland, Massachusetts, New Hampshire, New Jersey,

New York, Pennsylvania and Virginia - as well as Canada. “The boats were all from 1970 or earlier. One of the boats was built in 1934,” Stoudt pointed out.

Like any competitive sport, model yacht racing requires skill and practice, and operators must learn how the wind affects the sail. “It takes a couple of years to get good. To get really good, it takes longer than that,” Stoudt said. “You have to learn which thumb controls the rudder, which thumb controls the sails and what position the thumbs are in. You also have to learn how to read the wind on the water.

You want to sail into the wind shifts.”

Those interested in the club and its activities are invited to attend a sailing outing at Tel Hai Lake, 1101 Beaver Dam Road, Honey Brook. “Anybody is welcome. If they are interested, they can come out and watch,” he said. “If they would like to try it, we have club boats and we will … let them try it.”

For more information about the club and to view the schedule of upcoming sails, visit https://sites .google.com/site/csmy club/home. More information is also available at www.face book.com/groups/CSMYC.

Cohen To Speak At Church

Israel Cohen, a representative of Chosen People Ministries, will speak at Cornerstone Bible Church, 529 Lauschtown Road, Bowmansville, on Sunday, Oct. 30, during the evening praise service at 6 p.m. The program will be “Messiah in the Tabernacle.”

Chosen People Ministries was founded in Brooklyn, N.Y., in 1894 by Leopold Cohn, a Hungarian rabbi who came to believe that Jesus was the Messiah of Israel. It has grown into a worldwide ministry with outreach centers in Argentina, Australia, Canada, England, France, Germany, Israel, Mexico, Ukraine, and

the United States. Its mission is to bring the Gospel message of salvation in Jesus to Jewish people and to others around the world, emphasizing the Jewish roots of the Christian faith. Its goal is to make the message of the Messiah more accessible to Jewish people and to help Christians achieve a greater appreciation of the Jewish basis of their own faith traditions.

The meeting is open to the public, and the church invites both the Christian and Jewish communities to attend.

For more information, contact pastor Jahn Horgen at 717-445-0582.

Petra Plans Annual Fall Fest

Petra Church, 565 Airport Road, New Holland, will offer a day of free family fun on Saturday, Oct. 29, from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. during Petra Church’s annual Fall Fest.

The event dates back to the mid-1990s and now attracts more than 2,000 people.

This year’s event will feature carnival games, face painting, barrel train rides, live entertainment, free haircuts, and prizes. There will be three large inflatables: the Jungle Safari Playland Maze, a 68-foot Mega Obstacle Course, and Whack-a-Mole.

A Preschool Patch will offer games and crafts designed specifically for younger chil-

dren to enjoy. For the competitive types, there will be a variety of yard games, including can jam, spike ball, and cornhole.

Lots of food will be available, including hot chocolate, whoopie pies, popcorn, and french fries. Visitors will also be able to roast hotdogs and make s’mores over open campfires. Chick-fil-A sandwiches will be available for

purchase, but everything else is free.

The event is open to the public. For details, call the church at 717-354-5394 or visit www.petra.church/events or www.facebook.com/Petra ChurchNewHolland. In the case of inclement weather, guests can check the status of the Petra Fall Fest on Petra’s website or via WJTL or WDAC.

Anti-littering Initiatives Posted

Keep Pennsylvania Beautiful has announced its new anti-littering campaign, developed as part of the Wolf administration’s Litter Action Plan and in response to Keep Pennsylvania Beautiful’s 2019 Pennsylvania Litter Research Study. The campaign, “PA Fights Dirty: Every Litter Bit Matters,” encourages community members to clean up litter, whether by picking up litter in their neighborhood or organizing a larger cleanup of a public space.

Additionally, to prevent litter from ending up in waterways, Keep Pennsylvania Beautiful invites residents of the commonwealth to participate in Pick Up Pennsylvania in support of the Ocean Conservancy’s International Coastal Cleanup. The annual event is an opportunity to improve neighborhoods and Pennsylvania’s waterways by coordinating or participating in a litter cleanup.

In addition to waterway cleanups, land-based cleanups are also eligible since a significant portion of waterway pollution originates on land. Wind and rain carry litter into storm drains or directly into creeks and rivers that eventually flow to the ocean where it has a negative effect on marine life, human health, and coastal economies.

Through Wednesday, Nov. 30, participants who have registered for Pick Up Pennsylvania can receive free trash bags, gloves, and safety vests provided by the Pennsylvania Department of Environmental Protection, PennDOT, and the Ocean Conservancy, while supplies last. Keep Pennsylvania Beautiful suggests following all applicable federal, state, and local health and safety rules for COVID-19 in effect at the time of the event.

To register a cleanup or community improvement event, visit www.keeppabeautiful .org/programs/pick-up-pa/. For more information, contact Michelle Dunn at 877-7723673, ext. 113, or mdunn@keeppabeautiful.org.

To become a supporter of the 2023 Pick Up Pennsylvania program, contact Deb Woolley at dwoolley@keeppabeautiful.org.
