MABA Honors Longtime Member With Tree Dedication By Francine Fulton
To honor longtime Morgantown Area Business Association (MABA) member Joe Thomas, who passed away on Feb. 21 at the age of 81 after a lengthy illness, a flowering pear tree was dedicated in his honor on Oct. 15 in Morgan Circle Park. Joe’s family, MABA members and the public attended the memorial ceremony. “We planted this tree and dedicate it as a living memory of a great man who was always there to support Morgantown Area Business Association,” said MABA president Nora Filmore, who led the ceremony. “May it help us to have Joe live in our hearts forever.”
“Dad would have been touched by this,” said Joe’s daughter Terri, wife of Frank Payne. In addition to welcoming those in attendance, Filmore provided biographical information about Joe. “Joe was the husband of Roseann Thomas for 63 years,” she stated. “Together, they owned A2A Services - Vacs Plus at the intersection of routes 10 and 23 in Morgantown for more than 20 years. A2A Services was an MABA member.” Frank also noted that Joe spent 18 years working at Grace Mines when it was in operation in Morgantown. As a hoistman, Joe was in charge of operating electric hoisting machinery that was used to lower elevators and skips, See Tree Dedication pg 9

The Chester County commissioners recently issued a proclamation in recognition of the work done by local, county, and regional planners in conjunction with the celebration of National Community Planning Month. The commissioners adopted Landscapes3 in November 2018, renewing a vision and strategy for balancing growth and preservation. Over the past year, different aspects of the six goal areas of the plan - Preserve, Protect, Appreciate, Live, Prosper and Connect - have been addressed. The Preserve goal has been implemented through the release of the Return on Environment report, which highlights economic, environmental, and public health benefits of open space preservation in Chester County. The report was released during the Chester County Open Space Summit in May, which also served as a celebration of the 30th anniversary of open space preservation efforts in Chester County. During 2018, two major open space protection efforts - the former Strawbridge estate near the Maryland border and the Bryn Coed property in West Vincent and West Pikeland - were completed after three years of planning and acquisition. forward with the Protect goal by updating an inventory of natural resource ordinances. In addition, the Planning Commission is assisting the Chester County Water Resources Authority with an update to its water resources plan. For the Appreciate goal, the Planning Commission is creating a National Register interactive map and promoting adaptive reuse of historic properties. The popular Town Tours and Village Walks program continued this summer, offering free summer strolls in historic neighborhoods, hamlets, villages and sites throughout Chester County. The Planning Commission is implementing the Live goal by working with housing partners to find solutions to affordably priced housing issues and will discuss tools to address this topic during a housing forum on Thursday, Nov. 14, from 2 to 4:30 p.m. at Westminster Presbyterian Church, 10 W. Pleasant Grove Road, West Chester. The event, “Creating A+ Homes,” will focus on ways to make homes attractive, affordably priced, adaptable, agingfriendly and accessible. The forum topics will include new residential designs, policies for affordably priced homes and housing tools for municipalities. The commissioners, along with the

Chester County Department of Community Development, have provided funding support toward several affordably priced housing options in the county in recent years. The Prosper goal of Landscapes3 has been implemented this year through the county’s continued support of the urban centers. The commissioners unanimously approved $2.5 million in grants through the Community Revitalization Program this summer, which went toward infrastructure projects in the city of Coatesville and the boroughs of Atglen, Honey Brook, Phoenixville, Kennett Square, Modena and West Chester. Overall, the commissioners and Department of Community Development have awarded more than $68 million in Community Revitalization Program and Community Development Block Grant program grants since 2002. Another aspect of the Prosper goal is retaining and expanding business. Additionally, as part of the Prosper goal, the Planning Commission is creating a map about redevelopment opportunities in Chester County. In addition, the Planning Commission and Department of Community Development conducted an Urban Centers Forum on Oct. 8 that focused on tourism in urban centers. The Connect goal of Landscapes3 has been moving forward through progress on several trail projects. For example, the Schuylkill River Trail construction contract will be awarded by the end of the year, and construction will begin in early 2020 on approximately 4 miles of new trail between Parkerford and the Route 422 Bridge over the Schuylkill River, as well as
paving approximately 5 miles of trail between Parkerford and the Cromby Road Trailhead that is currently surfaced with stone dust. The 1-mile extension of the Chester Valley Trail from Main Street at Exton to the Oaklands Corporate Center is anticipated to go to construction in spring 2020. The Planning Commission also will conduct a forum, “Trails, Trains and Traffic,” that will focus on public transportation, active transportation and road improvements. The event will take place from 5:30 to 7:30 p.m. on Wednesday, Dec. 4, at the West Whiteland Township Building, 101 Commerce Drive, Exton. During the development of Landscapes3, Chester County residents identified the need for more bicycle and pedestrian facilities in their communities. To address this issue, the Planning Commission staff is working on an Active Transportation Municipal Ordinance Inventory and Outreach project. As part of the project, the Planning Commission will inventory all 73 municipalities, and the results will be used to target locations where active transportation facilities and the municipal ordinances that require and standardize such facilities are most needed. The antique show started in 1969 as a fundraiser for the Elverson Fire Company, which was torn down when the fire company merged with Morgantown Fire Company to form the Twin Valley Fire Company. Pam Mohl, children’s library director, reported that approximately 90 young patrons were rewarded with a T-shirt. Although not all of those were able to attend the event, about 30 youngsters were recognized individually and presented with their Tshirt. The T-shirt design featured the program’s theme, “A Universe of Stories,” and an astronaut attempting to catch a book in space. During the Summer Reading Program, Mohl explained, participants were given simulated passports and airplane tickets. Children and teenagers were asked to note on their tickets when they read for five minutes. When they reached 50 minutes, tickets were turned in to the library’s circulation desk. For each plane ticket turned in, the patron’s passport was stamped. Students who completed all of the destinations - reading for 1,000 minutes - were given a T-shirt. “Congratulations to all of you. You did a lot of good reading. We are so proud of you,” Mohl told the youths. She explained that Morgan Corporation of Morgantown sponsored the cost of the T-shirts again this year. “My daughter Sarah designed the shirt this year,” Mohl added. Fatisha Quainoo, a member of the human resources department at Morgan Corporation, was on hand to help pass out the T-shirts. “We value young students,” she said. “The younger that students start (to read), the earlier their education can start in reading, writing and spelling.

When David’s Drive 831 was created in 2010 in memory of David Turner Jr., who died in 2009 at the age of 20 of a suspected heart arrhythmia while working at the Coatesville Veterans Affairs (VA) Medical Center, the goal of the charity was to help veterans by providing them with T-shirts, underwear and socks. While working at the VA, David learned that many veterans lacked these basic necessities. Today, however, the efforts of David’s Drive have grown to include an array of community service projects that benefit veterans and their families. Thanks to David’s Drive, eight veterans, accompanied by support staff from the VA, took part in a fishing trip on Sept. 30 on the Chesapeake Bay in Maryland. “It was awesome. We had beautiful weather,� reported David Turner Sr., founder and president of David’s Drive. “It started out a little slow, but we ended up catching enough fish for them to have two fish fries up at the VA.� The charity also had a children’s playset installed at the VA on Sept. 30 to be used by visiting families. Once the project was approved, David’s Drive purchased the playground equipment and arranged for the installation. The new playground features double slides, a climbing feature, and stairs up to an elevated platform. “We were approached by the VA, and it was a request from the veterans that they wanted visitation times to be of better quality,� said Turner. “When the family comes, now (the children) have something to do.� As part of another effort, after receiving about 40 bikes for a discounted fee, David’s Drive coordinated a bike giveaway in cooperation with the Coatesville Police Department, including Sgt. Rodger Ollis, on Oct. 2. While most of the bikes were given away at the distribution, the police department has several remaining that it can give out at its discretion.
Each recipient also received a free bike helmet. “We gave one to a veteran who has severe PTSD and anxiety issues and is unable to take public transportation, so the bike was perfect for him,� said Turner. “One girl got a little pink bike, and it had a baby car seat on the back for her doll and she was so excited about that. A couple were Spider-Man bikes that (talk) when you ride them.� The charity’s current project is rebuilding the charcoal grill at the VA and converting it to propane. “LazyMan Gourmet Grills in New Jersey donated the grill, and the VA has a mason who is retrofitting the grill and hooking it up with gas. The grill has a griddle, so we are hoping we can have a pancake breakfast for the veterans. The hearth is 8 or 10 feet wide. It’s a commercial grill designed to cook for over 200 people,� Turner said. David’s Drive will also sponsor a variety of activities during Veterans Week at the Coatesville VA in November. This will include a concert by Jellyroll, a Philadelphia-based wedding band that played at the White House at the request of President George Bush and First Lady Laura Bush; a luncheon for woman veterans; and a trivia game show where prizes will include dorm-size electronics, such as microwaves.
Turner said these efforts could not take place without the generosity of the community. “Every once in a while, we reach out to someone for assistance with a project and they donate instead. It’s wonderful to be a conduit (of donations),� he said. “It’s amazing what people are willing to do and even more amazing what veterans were able to do for us.� He pointed out that the motto of the charity is “Helping Veterans Because We Should.� “People care about veterans. These and similar decorations should be kept far away from any open flames or heat sources, like candles, heaters, and light bulbs. Using candles as decoration can be risky, if not done correctly. Children should be reminded of the dangers of open flames and be supervised at all times when candles are lit. Candles should be extinguished before people leave an area. Glow sticks or electric candles are the safest choice when it comes to lighting up a jack-olantern, but if someone chooses to use a real candle, he or she should do so with extreme caution. A candle inside a jack-olantern should be lit using long fireplace matches or a utility lighter and kept away from other decorations. To improve visibility, children should be given flashlights or glow sticks for lighting, which can even be incorporated into the costume. If a child has a mask, the eye holes should be large enough for them to see clearly. The fall is a great time to make sure smoke alarms are functional and up-to-date. Exits are not an appropriate place for decorations. When decorating, nothing should block any escape routes. The Pennsylvania Department of Military and Veterans Affairs (DMVA) wants to see that everyone leaving the military receives every benefit they earned with their service to America. Former military members should register with the DMVA and apply for federal health care benefits soon after transitioning to civilian life. Hand-in-hand with applying for benefits is safeguarding military paperwork so these important documents are not misplaced or lost. The silent auction tables will begin closing at 3:15 p.m., and the live auction will start at 3:45 p.m. Auction items have been donated by local businesses and the community. Silent auction items will include gift certificates, jewelry and cat-related items. Live auction items will include a gift certificate for a theater in New York City, artwork and gift baskets. Bud and Annette Smith from Smith Auction Company will run the live auction. Photographs of items that will be available for auction can be found by searching for “Cat Angel Network” on Facebook. Posted items include a seven-piece heirloom Nativity set, an area rug featuring cats climbing on a tree and a pallet wall clock. “There will be a lot of variety; it’s a good auction,” said volunteer board member Henry Grabb, recording secretary and director of development. Information about the organization will be also be available at the event. Cat Angel Network has been in operation for more than 20 years. The group’s mission is to improve the situation of unwanted and abandoned cats and kittens through rescue by providing medical care, including spay and neuter services, and eventually finding the pets loving homes. Proceeds from the auction are targeted for CAN’s veterinary expenses and its spay/neuter program. “We don’t adopt any cat out that is not fully vetted, spayed or neutered,” Grabb explained. Photos of cats and kittens available for adoption are posted on the Facebook page, at www.catangel.org and at www.petfinder.com. People can meet adoptable cats in person at two local PetSmarts 1112 Town Square Road in Pottstown and 1010 E. Lancaster Ave. in Downingtown. Adopt-athons are held on weekends at the PetSmart locations. The next adoption events will be held on Saturday, Oct. 26, and Sunday, Oct. 27, from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. Cat Angel Network is always in need of volunteers. “We need fosters and people to work at the PetSmarts on the weekend and to help us with our adopt-a-thons,” Grabb said. “People are also needed to care for the cats in the stores, and we need people that can help with events.” Those interested in volunteering are asked to complete a volunteer application. which are large containers, into and out of the mine from different levels. “He would sit in a little room and he would pull a bunch of levers and operate pedals,” Frank explained. “He would somehow know what level the cars were so that he could safely take the men up and down from the (mine) and the material that they dug out.” Filmore also talked about Joe’s commitment to MABA. “Joe faithfully attended breakfast meetings, mixers, picnics, ex pos and holiday dinners beside his wife. Even as Joe’s health began failing him, Joe continued to support MABA by attending meetings and showing his support of the organization,” Filmore said. “Joe always helped in whatever way he could and favored any motion made to help MABA grow, always thinking of what was best for all the members.” In addition to Terri and Roseann, Joe is survived by his son Joey Thomas Jr., who wore his father’s hat to the ceremony. Joe and Roseann have seven grandchildren and 10 great-grandchildren. Joe’s grandson Nick McDermott was in attendance, along with his wife, Laurel, and their three children, Hunter, Mia and Nolan. Joe was predeceased by his daughter Cindy Mertz. Family members reported that Joe loved his dogs, Teddy Bear and Henry. “You would often see Joe outside the shop or riding in the car with them, along with their other dog, Fifi, which Roseann still has,” said Filmore. “Joe had a tender heart and a kind word for all he ran into. He was very emotional and often had tears in his eyes when speaking of his family or pets or Morgantown.” Filmore note that the tree will eventually be labeled with a plaque. “It will be attached to the tree and it will be expandable so that it will grow with the tree,” she explained. The event was held following MABA’s regular monthly breakfast meeting. MABA members attended the meeting and traveled directly to the tree dedication. MABA, which formed in 1984, is a nonprofit organization that supports and promotes business in Morgantown and surrounding communities. MABA also supports municipal law enforcement and emergency response agencies and works with schools and other agencies to promote business education. VITA Seeks Volunteers In 2019, more than 1,800 households received free tax preparation through the Volunteer Income Tax Assistance (VITA) program in Chester County. VITA is seeking volunteers for 2020. VITA is a program of the Internal Revenue Service (IRS) and is offered across the United States in thousands of sites each year. The VITA program just celebrated its 50th anniversary. Families and individuals who need help filing but who cannot afford to pay a preparer are encouraged to use VITA’s free services. Volunteers ensure that low- and moderate-income families are educated on frequently missed credits they may be eligible for, like the Earned Income Tax Credit and Child Tax Credit. These credits and deductions may reduce a taxpayer’s
liabilities and increase their refund. Since 2004, Life Transforming Ministries (LTM) in Coatesville has partnered with the IRS to operate sites in Chester County. LTM began with a few volunteers preparing 15 returns in 2004; recently, more than 100 volunteers prepared 1,877 free returns, generating $3.3 million in refunds. All returns are electronically prepared and filed at no cost to the taxpayer. The VITA program is a short-term community outreach opportunity that benefits low- and moderate-income households and offers flexible volunteer hours during the day, evening, and weekend. No prior experience is necessary. People from all walks of life are trained and volunteer through VITA. Opportunities in Chester County are
available in Coatesville, Downingtown, Exton, Phoenixville, and West Chester. Weaverland Anabaptist Faith Community has held a trick-ortreat alternative for more than a decade. According to Shannon Martin, one of the organizers of the upcoming Fall Celebration,
the outreach is a natural extension of the church’s mission. “As a church, we are always looking for a way to serve and better our community,” said Martin. “This event is just one way we can do that.” This year’s Fall Celebration will
be held at the church, 210 Weaverland Valley Road, East Earl, from 6:30 to 8:30 p.m. on Thursday, Oct. 31. The event will include a variety of activities for young children, middle-schoolers, and teenagers, as well as adults. Children’s games and activities that will be available inside the church will include cornhole, a football toss game, a duck pond, a golf putt game, and a lollipop toss, along with face painting. “Our
(game) prizes will include a variety of small toys, glow sticks, erasers, lollipops, stickers, and super balls,” said Martin.
