Hopewell Quilters Promote Needle Arts

As part of its ongoing effort to promote quilting and sewing, members of the Hopewell Quilters will present a beginner sewing workshop on aprons on Sunday, Oct. 26, from 1 to 3 p.m. at Daniel Boone Homestead, 400 Daniel Boone Road, Birdsboro.

Led by historian and Quilters member Becky Hughes, participants will learn the history of women’s aprons and make their own project to take home. No prior sewing experience is required. Attendees are asked to bring 1.5 yards of cotton fabric and 3 yards of ribbon. The use of sewing machines, as well as thread and sewing needles, will be provided.

Chester County Connect Care (CCCC), a nonprofit medical care pregnancy center, will present its annual 5K Run/Walk for Life, on Saturday, Nov. 8, rain or shine, at Hibernia County Park in Coatesville. In addition to the 5K, this year’s event will include a fun run/walk, a Pup Station for dogs, a Diaper Derby for toddlers and a petting zoo.

Space is limited, and there will be

a registration fee. To register, email thedanielboonehomestead@gmail .com. The workshop will take place in the Wayside Lodge. Those with questions may call 610-582-4900.

The group will also hold a quilting demonstration on Friday, Oct. 31, from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. in the DeTurk Building at Daniel Boone Homestead, which is free and open to the public.

Race-day registration will open at 8 a.m., followed by a welcome at 8:30 a.m. The Diaper Derby will be held at 8:45 a.m., during which toddlers, will crawl along a cushioned race course. “They have to be crawling, not walking,” explained Kirstyn Veneziale, CCCC marketing and event coordinator, noting that all toddlers will receive a CCCC onesie and headband to wear during the race. Prizes will be awarded. She noted that the race will only occur if there are at least five registrants.

Rotary

The Rotary Club of Birdsboro will present its annual Halloween parade on Thursday, Oct. 23, beginning at 7 p.m. at Daniel Boone Area High School, 501 Chestnut St., Birdsboro. The club has been sponsoring the parade for more than 45 years.

TVHS Band To Compete at Cavalcade

The Twin Valley High School (TVHS) marching band will participate in the Baron Invitational, which will take place on Saturday, Oct. 25, at Manheim Central High School’s Rettew Stadium, 400 Adele Ave., Manheim. Gates are tentatively scheduled to open at 3 p.m. The exact time will be finalized closer to the event.

Eighteen bands will compete in the event, with an additional two performing exhibition shows. In addition to TVHS, competing bands are from Jersey Shore Area Senior High School, Middletown Area High School, Shamokin Area High School, York Catholic High School,

Donegal High School, Big Spring High School, Conestoga Valley High School, Garden Spot High School, Littlestown High School, Conrad Weiser High School, Greencastle-Antrim High School, Lower Dauphin High School, Cedar Crest High School, Eastern York High School, Red Lion Area Senior High School, South Western High School and Warwick High School. Exhibition bands are from Manheim Central High School and Millersville University.

The event is part of the Cavalcade of Bands competition, which features performances at local football stadiums on weekends

from September through early November. Bands receive verbal judged commentary and numeric scores as each school has the opportunity to perform in front of large crowds of spectators. The competition groups bands by division, based on the total number of members.

Food will be available to purchase at the event and will include hot dogs, walking tacos, soups, french fries and baked goods.

There is an admission charge for the invitational, with separate prices for adults and for students.

Proceeds from the event are used by the band booster club to support band programming.

People are invited to bring properly restrained pets, in or out of costume, for a pet blessing. Food and beverages will be available, as well as candy, and the event is free of charge. everyone who registers their dog will get a bandana for their pet and treats,” said Veneziale, adding, “We will have a Cheer Zone with things to cheer on the runners along the course like cowbells and clappers.”

Breakfast items and race snacks will be provided free of charge. “Before the race, we will have doughnuts, bagels, bananas, yogurt and oranges,” Veneziale noted. “After, there will be chips and soft pretzels.” Coffee and hot chocolate will also be offered.

There will be separate registration fees for the 5K, the fun run/walk and the Diaper Derby. All participants in the 5K and fun run/walk will be given a “I Run for Life” T-shirt.

Veneziale noted that about 300 people took

part in last year’s event, which is being held at Hibernia for the fourth time. A representative from CCCC will push an empty stroller with balloons to honor babies who have been lost. Proceeds from the event will support the agency’s ongoing mission to provide medical, educational and material support to women and families facing unplanned pregnancies. All services are 100% free. Families are supported physically, emotionally and financially through basic pregnancy care, parenting education, peer counseling, a homeless prevention program and community referrals.

Veneziale added that non-runners and walkers may also attend the event

Quilters

The Hopewell Quilters are a group of sewing enthusiasts who demonstrate quilting at venues throughout the area. Members also hold a Sewing Circle on the second Saturday of the month at the Exeter Community Library.

The quilters were busy stitching together the three layers of the quilt using blue lines as a guide. When washed, the blue lines, which are imprinted on the fabric, will disappear, leaving only the stitches.

The group also demonstrates quilting at French Creek State Park in Elverson, where they set up in the park office’s downstairs meeting room. During a recent gathering, members were busy stitching a quilt that will be used at Daniel Boone Homestead upon completion.

The item they were working on was a wholecloth quilt, which is made of one continuous piece of fabric that is used for the top layer, rather than a pieced-together patchwork. The quilt’s pattern is created entirely by the stitching through the fabric and its batting and backing.

“This style quilt was popular in the 1700s,” noted Eve Biamonte. “It’s a whole cloth quilt. Most of the quilts were made with extra scraps from fabric or clothing. They did whole-cloth quilts for special occasions like weddings.”

“When we are finished, and it is washed, all the lines will come out,” explained Kate Pugliese. “All you are left with are the stitches. It creates a pattern with the stitches.”

“The purpose of quilting is to hold the three layers of fabric together, so that when it gets washed, the middle layer will not crunch up at one end,” Biamonte added. “In addition to the functionality of holding the three layers together, you put designs in a quilt to make it look pretty.”

The women said they enjoy not only quilting but the camaraderie among members.

“It’s relaxing,” said Pugliese. “You don’t need to know different stitches like in crocheting or knitting.”

“Women solve the issues of the world over the quilt frame,” added Christine Hawthorne with a smile.

During their programs at the various sites, the Quilters allow visitors, includ -

ing children, to try their hand at quilting. “When we demonstrate, we have what we call a cheater cloth for them to practice on,” said Biamonte. “Some people do know a little about quilting, and others know nothing and are fascinated by it. When we have young people who try it, some of them do very well with it.”

The Hopewell Quilters will hold their Sewing Circle at the Exeter Community Library, 4569 Prestwick Drive, Reading, from 10 a.m. to noon on Saturdays, Nov. 8 and Dec. 13. Each session includes a demonstration on a specific topic, followed by a time during which attendees can work on their own sewing projects. Participants also have an opportunity to practice the art of quilting. The topic on Nov. 8 will be quilling, and the topic on Dec. 13 will be apron-making. For more information, contact the library at 610-406-943. For more information about the group, search for “Hopewell Quilters” on Facebook. New members are welcome and may send a Facebook message for more information.

Organization and Business; Best Vehicle; and Best NonFloat Walkers - Family, Individual, Organization and Business.

“We present the trophies prior to the start of the parade. We have judges that walk around,” noted Nancy Kauffman, Rotary president.

The parade will feature floats, families in costume and a performance by the Daniel Boone Area High School marching band.

“(The number of participants) varies each year. Most of the local fire companies participate,” said Kauffman. “We have local organizations such as the Boy Scouts, the Girl Scouts, churches and a dance studio, and we have some private individuals. Anyone can join, but we don’t allow political organizations or candidates running for office.”

Those who would like to participate in the parade or enter a float may complete a registration form at www.facebook.com/ BirdsboroHalloweenParade.

The Rotary Club of Birdsboro, which is part of Rotary International, is a community service organization with the motto of “Service Above Self.” Among its activities is sponsoring the Interact Club at Daniel Boone Area High School for students ages 12 to 18. The goal of the club is “to develop

leadership skills, promote international understanding and encourage community service.” In addition to meetings and participating in fundraisers, Interact Club members take part in the Halloween parade.

“The parade is our biggest event,” noted Kauffman. “We sell poppies for the VFW and have a few fundraisers. We have some flower boxes we take care of at borough hall.”

One of the club’s major projects is the installation of historical markers.

“What we have been doing for the past two years has been sponsoring historical markers throughout Birdsboro,” Kauffman explained.

“We have one at Main Bird Park (honoring) the different neighborhoods of Birdsboro like Texas and Brooklyn. We have one at Conestoga Telephone (to commemorate) the history

of the telephone industry in Birdsboro and one at the William Bird mansion, which is now the community center.”

The group’s current project is to establish a marker in honor of the Birdsboro trolley system. “There used to be a trolley from the city of Reading to Birdsboro,” noted Kauffman. “It would go through West First Street and under the Jackson Street bridge out to Route 724. We are gathering information, and that will be our next marker.”

The Rotary Club of Birdsboro meets on the first and third Thursdays of the month at 6:30 p.m. at Stopper’s Steak and Seafood, 6421 Perkiomen Ave., Reading. Attendees may eat dinner at 6 p.m. prior to the meeting. New members are welcome. For more information about the club, visit www.birdsbororotary.org.

The Benefits of Home Health Aides

Caregivers come from all walks of life. Doctors and nurses may be the frontline medical providers people encounter most frequently, but plenty of others do their part to maintain the well-being of individuals. Among these caregivers are home health aides.

Home health aides, sometimes called personal care aides, assist people with activities of daily life. An aide typically helps a person who may need assistance with tasks he or she cannot perform due to illness or disability. The aides may work in a person’s home, in a group home, or in another care facility.

AARP says home health aides are considered health care paraprofessionals and must meet established training requirements, which vary by location. Their duties may include assistance with personal

care, such as dressing, toileting, feeding, and moving from a bed to a chair; checking vital signs; monitoring a client; light housekeeping; meal planning and cooking; picking up prescriptions; and providing companionship.

Aides typically will not provide skilled nursing care and may not be able to offer recommendations on treatment or medications.

referrals. It can be useful to interview several potential aides to find one who will fit with the needs and personality of the person requiring assistance. A good aide is compassionate, patient, and flexible. As illness or injury also can affect a person’s mood, aides must be able to adjust if a client is reluctant to receive help or is depressed or anxious from his or her limitations.

Home health aides serve an important role in the health care community by providing care and companionship to those who can no longer live independently.
