Litter Education Book Updated
Keep Pennsylvania Beautiful has announced that revisions to its “Open Your Eyes to Litter in a Watershed” book is complete. It is part of the Open Your Eyes to Litter series of five educational activity books, which the organization is updating in partnership with illustrator and concept artist Brady Mock and the Eastern Pennsylvania Coalition for Abandoned Mine Reclamation (EPCAMR). The updates are being made to account for the changing environment, new environmental education standards, and new types of litter. The original series was created more than 20 years ago, and more than one million copies were distributed to schools throughout Pennsylvania.
“Open Your Eyes to Litter in a Watershed” is designed for kids in grades two through four. The book focuses on how illegal dumping and littering affect watersheds. The book includes vocabulary, activities, journal prompts, and activities that reinforce the concept of a watershed and how litter impacts the people and animals who live there.
Pennsylvania’s firstever Litter Action Plan, announced by the Governor’s Office in 2021, called for education and outreach strategies to ensure that all Pennsylvanians know littering is unacceptable and that there are better ways to manage their waste. Boosting Cognitive Health
Cognitive health is not something to take for granted. Although a certain level of memory loss can be expected as people age, when the ability to clearly think, learn, and remember is compromised, those changes can affect an individual’s ability to perform daily activities and are a cause for concern.
Brain health should be a priority for everyone. The National Institute on Aging (NIA) says brain health is an umbrella term that encompasses a host of factors, including cognitive health, which is how well a person
thinks, learns, and remembers; motor function, or how movements are made and controlled; tactile function, which is how a person feels sensations; and emotional function, or how a person interprets and responds to emotions.
Individuals can safeguard brain health - particularly cognitive health - by taking the following steps.
Be more health-conscious. People should get routine screenings, manage chronic health problems, limit or avoid alcohol and nicotine products, and get the rec-

Manage high blood pressure. All chronic conditions cause long-term repercussions, but the NIA indicates that observational studies show that having high blood pressure in mid-life increases the risk of cognitive decline later in life. Lowering blood pressure lowers the risk for mild cognitive impairment and possibly dementia.
Challenge your brain. Harvard Medical School says nurturing social connections, engaging in stimulating mental activities like reading and doing puzzles, seeing new places, and learning new things can help keep the brain in top form.
Manage stress. Stress can take its toll on the body, and there is reason to believe that it may adversely affect cognitive health as well. Make every effort to reduce stress, whether that involves exercising, meditating, laughing with friends and family members, taking vacations, or engaging in other relaxing activities.

Get enough vitamin D. Vitamin D is linked to a host of health benefits, including its potential to promote a healthy brain. Individuals can spend more time outdoors to get vitamin D naturally from the sun and eat foods rich in vitamin D. If doctors find that vitamin D levels are exceptionally low, supplements can help.
Pay attention to hearing loss. At least one type of hearing loss has been linked to cognitive decline, says Healthline. Researchers in Italy concluded that people with central hearing loss had a higher risk of mild cognitive impairment than those with no hearing loss or peripheral hearing loss. Individuals with central hearing loss are urged to speak to their physicians to determine if they can take preventive action to stave off further decline.
Cognitive health should be a priority, and adults can employ various strategies to reduce their risk of cognitive decline as they age.

Chester County CEO Graduates From Program
The Center for Excellence in County Leadership (CEL), a professional development program of the County Commissioners Association of Pennsylvania (CCAP), has announced that David Byerman, Chester County CEO, has graduated from the program as part of the Class of 2025.
The CEL program fosters individual growth through interactive and high-level executive train-
ing aimed at improving participants’ communication, management, and leadership skills. The winners will be published in this special section appearing in the Conestoga Valley and Garden Spot Pennysavers, as well as the Morgantown/Honey Brook and Octorara Community Couriers, in early December. All entries will be featured on townlively.com. Not all entries are guaranteed to be published in print.

the entries in each division will be created around the theme “Famous Quotes.”
“When we were looking for a theme for the show, we decided people needed some inspiration,” said Vanessa Peterson, who is co-chair of the event along with Lisa Cherpanich. “Each category of the flower show is dedicated to an author, and each division will emphasize a well-known quotation.”
There are individual subcategories in each division. In horticulture, categories include cut specimens, fruits and vegetables and container-grown plants. The design division includes categories such as framed designs and dried plants. For botanical arts, people may enter an artistic crafts category using items such as a hat, a highheel shoe or a watch as a vessel for their plants.
The design division is dedicated to Robert Frost. One of the categories features the quote, “The best way round is through.” The horticulture division will feature quotes by Rachel Carson. “(Carson’s quote), ‘Each mystery solved brings us to the greater one’ is for the cut specimen category in the horticulture division,” Peterson noted. “My favorite is Doctor Seuss, and he is the (featured author) in
the botanical arts division.”
This year’s show will also feature a youth division with participation from Twin Valley High School (TVHS) and Chester County Intermediate Unit (CCIU) students.
The quote by Maya Angelou for the youths’ novice class is “Try to be a rainbow in someone’s cloud.”
“The Twin Valley Education Association had a workshop where the community can come in, and (TVHS teacher) Nicole Weaver was making wreaths back in December.
She spoke at our club, and I went into the school and presented to her students,” said Peterson, explaining how the participation by the TVHS students came about. “For the CCIU, Mike Walls is one of the (horticulture) instructors there and he joined our club, and he has students signed up for the show, too.”
“Young people have such enthusiasm; it will be fun to see their interpretations of the quote,” Peterson added. Organizers believe that the upcoming show, which the club holds every two years, will be interesting for people who love plants, as well as those who enjoy literature.
“Authors uplift us and put a twist on our lives to take us away from reality for a while,”
Peterson said.
The Elverson Garden Club is a member of the National Garden Clubs and the Garden Club Federation of Pennsylvania. The National Garden Club System of awarding will be applied in all divisions at the upcoming show; accredited judges will be used.
Judging will take place prior to the opening of the show so the awards can be seen by the public. Information about joining the club will be available, and club members will be on hand to answer questions.
The Elverson Garden Club, now in its 96th year, meets monthly, with the exception of January and February, at Detterline Hall on the first Tuesday of the month at 6:30 p.m. Debbie Wright serves as current club president.
Besides monthly meetings and activities, the group decorates Hibernia Mansion at Christmas and participates in the Longwood Gardens Flower Show and the Philadelphia Flower Show.
Individuals may join the “Elverson Garden Club” Facebook group for more information about the club and the show.
PennCyber Warns
Residents of “Phantom Hacker” Scam
The Cybersecurity Association of Pennsylvania (PennCyber) urges vigilance as senior citizens across the commonwealth and the nation face a surge in sophisticated “Phantom Hacker” scams. These multi-phase social engineering attacks leave seniors vulnerable to devastating financial losses, often draining entire retirement accounts.
The FBI reports that nearly half of the victims of these scams are over 60 years old, with seniors representing two-thirds of all financial losses. Nationwide, Americans have already lost more than $1 billion to this evolving fraud.
The “Phantom Hacker” scheme unfolds in three stages. An impostor poses as technical support, convincing victims to allow remote access to their computers. Then another impostor posing as a bank representative claims the victim’s accounts have been compromised and directs funds to a “safe” account. In many cases, victims are then contacted by individuals posing as U.S. government officials, who may even send official-looking documents to reinforce the deception.
Recent reports indicate scammers are also leveraging artificial intelligence to make their attacks more convincing, targeting seniors based on personal interests, hobbies, and online activity.

What
I love about EPC’s online marketing is the ease of access to see how a campaign is doing, and they always make time to reach out and talk about what could be changed. Since working with them, our online foot traffic
has more than tripled and our online sales have increased exponentially!”
Ryan Amway, Inside Track
PennCyber encourages families to discuss these scams proactively, educate seniors on the red flags, and remind them to immediately report any suspicious contact. The FBI urges victims to report incidents to their local FBI Field Office and the Internet Crime Complaint Center (IC3) at www.ic3.gov.

Streubert Named County HR Director
Chester County Commissioners Josh Maxwell, Marian Moskowitz, and Eric Roe have named Lauren Streubert the new director of human resources (HR) for the County of Chester. Streubert comes to the county from Citadel Credit Union, where in her 20-plusyear career she served as human resources manager, director of human resources, and vice president of human resources.
Under the direction of Chester County CEO David Byerman, Streubert will
oversee a department of 16 employees, which administers benefits to 2,400 full-time county employees, recruits talent, develops wellness and training programs, and ensures the county complies with workplace safety regulations.
Streubert earned a Bachelor of Arts in psychology at Albright College and a Master of Science in Administration, Human Resources Management from West Chester University. She is a Society for Human Resource Management Senior Certi-

inside to the gymnasium at 4 p.m. There will also be homemade apple dumplings available for purchase. There will be a set price to purchase a pan with eight dumplings each.
After the barbecue, there will be an alumni celebration, with activities located behind the school. First up will be a student Powderpuff Football Championship, followed by an alumni soccer game. “We already have alumni signed up,” Hall noted.

On Oct. 18, breakfast items and individual apple dumplings will be offered for sale at the Cougar Cafe. There will also be a Cougar Grounds coffee area offering hot coffee, cold brew, hot cider and hot chocolate.
The live auction on Oct. 18 will be held from 9 a.m. until the last item is sold. On the auction block will be handmade quilts, experiences and homemade jams and yogurt.
Also featured will be artwork, some made by the students themselves. Eighth-grader Ella Perechinsky created a painting for
the auction that features a colorful sunset done in acrylics. The artwork also includes Psalm 19:1, which states, “The heavens declare the glory of God; and the firmament sheweth His handywork.” “I drew it first with pencil, and then I went over it with paint,” Ella noted.
In addition, each class at the school has designed a themed basket for the auction. Basket themes this year will include Date Night, Relaxation and Wellness, Backyard Fun, Fall Fun, Road Trip and A Hunting We Will Go. “Our class baskets are always a big hit,” said Hall. “Each grade level comes up with a theme. The senior class always does a College Ready basket with sheets for a college dorm bed, a (coffee maker) and a microwave - things you need for your dorm room.”
Each year, there is also a “paddle raise” during the auction for a special project. “This year’s (special project) is to hopefully install a high-visibility digital sign in front of campus,” Hall said, noting that sign will share event announcements, cel-

ebrate student accomplishments and keep families informed about events.
An online auction will be offered this year as well. Bidding will start on Thursday, Oct. 16, at 8 a.m. and run through Thursday, Oct. 23, at 8 p.m. Bidders can visit www.conestogachristian .net for more details and bidding access.
Proceeds from the weekend will be used to support the financial operations of the school, which offers classes for students in preschool through 12th grade. The weekend’s events will be held rain or shine. In the case of inclement weather, activities will be moved indoors.
The school is located at 2760 Main St. (Route 23), Morgantown. For complete details about the barbecue and auction and to order chicken in advance, visit www.conestogachristian .net/bbqauction.
Overflow parking and a shuttle service will be available at Conestoga Mennonite Church, which is located across the street from the school.
