Conestoga Christian School To Hold Barbecue, Auction

While the event has been slightly modified this year due to COVID-19, Conestoga Christian School (CCS) will hold its 47th annual chicken barbecue and auction on Friday and Saturday, Oct. 16 and 17.

This year, the barbecue dinner will be takeout only. Each dinner will include a half-chicken, applesauce, chips, a dinner roll and butter, a whoopie pie and a choice of water or lemonade. Half-chickens only will also be available. To order chicken barbecue tickets in advance, readers may visit w w w. c o n e s t o g a c h r i s t i a n . n e t /auction2020.

Dinners may be picked up in the school’s front parking lot from 11 a.m. to 7 p.m. on Oct. 16. This year, drive-through dinner pickup will not be available at Conestoga Mennonite Church, located across from CCS. “We will turn our entire school parking lot into a four-lane drive-through,� explained Michelle Parris, CCS admissions director. “We are trying to do everything as efficiently as possible.�

Also on Oct. 16, a gift certificate store will be open outside the school, and there will be homemade apple dumplings available for purchase.

A live auction will be held on Oct. 17 from 9 to 11 a.m. It will take place outside under a tent behind the elementary school. “Masks will be required inside and if social distancing cannot be achieved outside,� Parris noted.

This year, there will be no alumni game, no children’s area and no food tent. “ We downsized the amount of food we are serving. We will have a coffee area that will serve specialty coffees, cold drinks and our famous apple dumplings.

They are made at the school on the Wednesday before (the auction) by parent volunteers,� said Parris.

The live auction will feature a selection of items, experiences, artwork, quilts and homemade jams and yogurt. Auction highlights will include a 1999 Volkswagen Jetta, a John Deere tractor, 150 gallons of heating oil and two-night stays at local inns, including Brownstone Colonial Inn Bed and Breakfast and Laurel Springs Guest House.

Although a few changes have been made due to COVID-19, this year’s Apple Festival at Historic Joanna Furnace will go on, offering an assortment of apple dishes, as well as a flea market and fall craft fair. The Hay Creek Valley Historical Association (HCVHA) will present the Apple Festival on Saturday, Oct. 10, and Sunday, Oct. 11, from 8 a.m. to 3 p.m.

Visitors will be able to view a wide variety of makes and models of cars, trucks and motorcycles during Historic Poole Forge’s annual Cruise to the Forge, set for Sunday, Oct. 18, from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. The show is free to the public; vehicle owners will be asked to pay a registration fee. HCVHA volunteers will prepare open fire cooked soups throughout the weekend, as well as chicken potpie. Soup varieties will include chicken corn noodle, beef vegetable and ham and bean. Soup can be purchased by the quart or by the bowl. Other foods available at the event will include hot dogs and a box meal that will include a sausage sandwich with french fries and a beverage.

There will be no tables and chairs available for visitors.

However, festival attendees are invited to bring their own chairs or blankets for seating while keeping socially distant.

There will be curbside pickup for customers who prefer not to enter the festival. People are encouraged to preorder their food at www.haycreek.org/food-raiser. “Ordering guarantees that you get what you want because we

Across the country, rioters are burning bibles and American flags. They are burning churches, businesses, and government buildings. They are a acking and bea ng bystanders that don’t agree with them. Radical mayors and governors are encouraging the rioters by defunding police departments, resul ng in rising crime rates na onwide.

Worse, they’ve exploited the coronavirus epidemic as an excuse to force churches to close while leaving Walmarts, casinos, liquor stores and abor on clinics open. Each of us has the power to stop this.

In the United States, 40% of Chris ans do not vote.

If God did not want us to have an ac ve role in His plans, He would not have called us to ac on repeatedly throughout Scripture. Again and again, from Genesis to Revela on, He calls on His people to act, to stand against evil, and to stand up for the needy and vulnerable (Isaiah 6:8, Ma hew 28:18-20, Ephesians 5:11, Proverbs 29:2, Proverbs 31:8-9). If we sit on the sidelines while every good thing our na on stands for is destroyed, we will have violated far more Scripture than the handful of passages that may be misused to jus fy inac on.

We encourage you to pray and ask God to help you break free from these fears. We are all called upon to do the right thing. The hard part is finding the courage to stand up, to stand in the gap. However, standing in the gap is the only way to stop this storm.

The Berks History Center (BHC), 940 Centre Ave., Reading, is now open, welcoming visitors to explore Berks County history. To ensure the well-being of visitors, volunteers and staff members, the center is following the guidelines of the CDC and Pennsylvania Department of Health.

Public visitation hours for both the museum and library will be Wednesdays through Saturdays from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m., and appointments are required. No walk-ins will be permitted.

Virtual Race To Benefit Natural Lands Car Show

Natural Lands will present its annual ChesLen Chase for Open Space this year, but due to COVID-19, the event has gone virtual.

As part of the fundraiser, now called “ChesLen Chase ...

All Over the Place,” participants are asked to complete 2 miles, a 5K, a 10K or a half marathon any time from Saturday, Oct. 10, through Sunday, Oct. 18. Participants may also complete the Chase Challenge, which includes the 2 miles, 5K, 10K and half marathon.

Both trail runners and road runners or walkers are welcome to register on Team Dirt or Team Asphalt. Runners and walkers can choose their own race length, pace and location.

The virtual event replaces the ChesLen Chase normally held at the ChesLen Preserve in Coatesville, a 1,300-acre property. “Every year for the last seven years we hosted a ChesLen Chase, (but) since

we can’t gather 600 people together safely, we are hosting the virtual race,” said Kirsten Werner, senior director of communications for Natural Lands. “People can walk or run or hike on their own treadmills, in their neighborhood or on trails at the Natural Lands nature preserves.”

After completing the chosen distance, runners and walkers are asked to enter their results online. “Since it’s an honor system and people are running on trails versus asphalt, there will be no prizes,” Werner noted.

“Instead, we are celebrating people that go the distance, and every registrant gets a race T-shirt, a medal, a Team Dirt or Team Asphalt sticker and virtual bib. The shirts are cute because they have masks on them.”

All proceeds will benefit Natural Lands and its mission to save open space, care for nature and connect people with the outdoors. “We’re a nonprofit, and we get no

government funds because the preserves are on private property,” Werner explained. “(Fundraising) is a way to help support the preserves and make them beautiful places for people to visit.”

Werner noted that the preserves have seen an increase in use during the pandemic.

“At ChesLen, our visitation is up three or four times, and we had to hire additional staff to coordinate parking and open a huge field for parking,” she said. “Our preserves never closed during the pandemic. People were flocking to open spaces, and with extra time on their hands - parents not working and kids not in school - the number of visitors has skyrocketed.”

Natural Lands owns 19 preserves and one public garden. All are open free of charge. In addition to the ChesLen Preserve, local sites include the Green Hills Preserve in Mohnton, Binky Lee Preserve in Chester Springs, the Crow’s Nest Preserve in

Elverson, the Stroud Preserve in West Chester and the Sadsbury Woods Preserve in Coatesville. A complete list of locations is available at www.natlands.org/visit.

playground will be open,” said Dawn Ekdahl, executive director of Historic Poole Forge. “(The event) will be scaled down this year. Basically, it will be more of a car cruise with people driving in to display their cars.”

She added that the cars will not be judged this year and that visitors will be asked to practice social distancing.

A highlight of the day is always when a professional photographer takes photos of the vehicles as they drive over the site’s covered bridge, which crosses the Conestoga River. “The photos will be printed on-site, and (car owners) will have an opportunity to buy them,” Ekdahl noted.

Craft vendors will be stationed outside this year instead of inside the Pool Forge Ironmaster’s Mansion, and a silent auction will also be located outside. Auction items will include gift cards and items from local businesses.

Food will be available for sale by Blue Ribbon Catering, and music will be provided by disc jockey Jay Mattson.

Representatives from the Classic Auto Mall in Morgantown will be on hand with information about their car showroom and museum. Visitors will also be able to stroll the grounds.

Historic Poole Forge is located at 1940 Main St., Narvon, along Route 23, 7 miles east of New Holland and 5 miles west of Morgantown.

Chester County Board Approves Plans For Election ballot drop boxes can be found on Chester County’s comprehensive election portal at www.chesco.org/elections.

Included on the portal is an interactive map that allows voters to enter their address to find the satellite election office and secure drop-off locations closest to them.

All drop-off locations will include a secure, tamper-proof locked box for completed ballots that are placed in the secrecy envelope and outer envelope.

Security personnel will be positioned at each location.

Ballots will be collected every evening by individuals who are wearing a body camera, and the ballots will be delivered to the Chester County Government Services Center, where they will be kept under video surveillance 24/7 until Election Day, Tuesday, Nov. 3.

Chester County’s polling places will be set up to ensure the maximum level of personal

protection against COVID-19 for both poll workers and the voting public on Election Day. This includes clear, mappedout 6-foot social distancing while waiting to vote and while voting; plexiglass shields; hand sanitizer and hand washing facilities; provision of masks, gloves and sanitation kits for all poll workers; regular cleaning of pens and voting stations; and specialized disinfectant for scanning machines.

The Chester County Board of Elections recently approved a number of measures to ensure the eligible ballots of all county voters are counted in the November election. The measures include the designation of 11 locations for secure drop-off of mail-in and absentee ballots and the addition of two satellite election offices.

Starting on Tuesday, Oct. 13, drop-off locations will be open for all county residents who choose to vote by mail-in or absentee ballot to securely return their completed ballot in-person.
