Watch Out For Jude Jones! Twin Valley Graduate Pursues A Timely Profession BY FRANCINE FULTON
“I always really liked watches from a young age,” said Jude Jones of Morgantown, who graduated this past summer from the Lititz Watch Technicum, where he became a Swiss American Watchmakers Training Alliance (SAWTA) certified watchmaker. “I was always very precise growing up. When I was young, I always liked to take things apart and put them back to together - and they always worked.” Jones, the son of David and Lori Jones of Morgantown, is a 2019 graduate of Twin Valley High School. He decided to pursue the field of watchmaking after a lesson on careers that he completed while a senior. “We had a class project revolving around careers and what you had to do to pursue them and what education you needed,” he recalled. “I didn’t know what I what I wanted to do with my life at that point. So, I decided to look up what

All proceeds will benefit the school, which offers classes for students in preschool through 12th grade. The event will begin with the barbecue dinner on Oct. 15, which will be takeout only. Each dinner will include a half-chicken, applesauce, chips, a dinner roll and butter, a whoopie pie and a choice of water or lemonade. Half-chickens only will also be available. In addition, each class at the school has designed a themed basket for the auction. Basket themes will include Date Night, Health and Wellness, Family Fun and Gardening. Bidding on class baskets will start at 9:30 a.m. Coffee, breakfast sandwiches, doughnuts, homemade yogurt, fruit and apple dumplings will also be offered for sale.
All things apple - apple dumplings, apple pies, apple crisp, homemade caramel apples, apple fritters, hot mulled cider and freshly pressed cider - will be the stars of the upcoming Hay Creek Apple Festival to be held on Saturday and Sunday, Oct. 9 and 10, at Historic Joanna Furnace, 1250 Furnace Road, Geigertown.

Monday, Oct. 11. A limited supply of dinners will be available to purchase at the door. Dinners may be picked up in the school’s front parking lot from 11 a.m. to 7 p.m. on Oct. 15. Michelle Parris, CCS admissions director, explained that the driveup service was implemented last year because of the pandemic. “It went so well last year, so we are keeping (it that way),” she said. “We were able to serve so many people. We actually sold over 2,200 dinners last year, all drive-through.” Also on Oct. 16, a gift certificate store will be open outside the school, and there will be homemade apple dumplings available for purchase. ages 10 to 18. “We are actively recruiting Scouts. We are also trying to start up Cub Scouts again,” said scoutmaster Tom Yost, noting that Cub Scout troops are open to youths in kindergarten through fifth grade. In 2020, Troop 37 did not meet or attend summer camp, but activities have resumed. “We are doing lots of outdoor activities (like) hiking and camping,” Yost said. “We also do a lot of community service (projects). We have a (regular) roadside cleanup along Route 23, and then we also do a yearly roadside cleanup in East Nantmeal. The kids have fun with the things they find.” He noted that Scouts who have aged out of the troop often volunteer as adult leaders. “The adult leaders are younger guys that the kids can identify with more, and they are willing to come back and (help),” said Yost. “They recently did an Appalachian Trail Hike, and the three adult leaders were (former) Scouts in their 20s. (They) volunteered to lead the hike. “ Young men interested in joining the

Apple Festival from pg 1 The event, presented annually by the Hay Creek Valley Historical Association (HCVHA), will include most of the events that visitors have come to enjoy through the years. “We did a mini event last year. We are building back to our traditional Apple Festival,” noted Mark Zerr, HCVHA executive director. The event will begin each day with an apple pancake breakfast that will be served from 7 to 10 a.m. “We are planning our regular Apple Festival with modifications. For instance, we will offer our pancake breakfast, but it will be outside instead of in our (Mule Children may ride the Apple Stable) building,” Zerr noted. “We have an outside seating area.” Barrel Express during the Hay Creek Apple Festival. Mabel’s Iron-Kettle Soups, cooked over actual open fires, will also be a highlight of the weekend. Varieties will include chicken corn, beef vegetable and ham and bean with rivels. “Mabel’s Iron-Kettle Soups recipes can be traced back to the meals served to 19th-century furnace workers’ families,” Zerr pointed out. Soup, as well as chicken potpie, will be available by the quart. A flea market will be open both days. Committee members from

HCVHA’s newly acquired TriCounty Heritage Library will also have books for sale. “We will have everything from the traditional flea market items to antiques and crafts,” said Zerr. Vendors interested in a flea market or craft stand should call Kathleen at 610-914-8152 for details. Family activities during the Apple Festival will include scarecrow making, pumpkin painting and hayrides. “Returning this year, which was not (offered) last year, is the Apple Barrel Express,” Zerr added, explaining that the activity, which is geared for young children, is a tractor-pulled plastic barrel train ride. The Joanna Furnace buildings will be open and staffed by interpreters. The buildings include the blacksmith shop, the blowing engine house, the casting house, the office/store and the charcoal house museum. Visitors will also be able to see Hay Creek’s latest restoration project - the Joanna Furnace wheelwright shop. Joanna Furnace is located off Route 10, 3 miles north of Morgantown. Masks are optional, but visitors should maintain social distancing. Admission to the Hay Creek Apple Festival is free. Parking will be available on-site by donation. All proceeds will benefit the HCVHA, which is the nonprofit organization that preserves and maintains the Historic Joanna Furnace site. School To Host Community Auction As part of its annual homecoming celebration, Berks Christian School will host a community benefit auction on Saturday, Oct. 9. Featured will be a variety of items, including gift certificates to many local restaurants and businesses, themed gift baskets, specialty items and more. The event will include a quarter auction beginning at 10 a.m., followed by a traditional live auction at 11:30 a.m. Registration for both events will open at 9:15 a.m. Free hot apple cider along with
freshly made doughnuts and cookies will be available. Additional food and beverages can be purchased throughout the day. Families are welcome, and there will be fun children’s activities, including crafts and games from 10 to 11:30 a.m. for a suggested donation.
