Those interested in low-impact hikes and exploring unique locations throughout the area are invited to join Berks Community Strollers, a local hiking group,
which has scheduled weekly outings this fall.
The Strollers, an offshoot of the Berks Community Hiking Club, was formed for those interested in more of a leisurely stroll rather than a fast-paced hike.

StillWaters Ministries (SWM), a nonprofit organization that offers no-fee community counseling services to residents of Chester, Berks and Lancaster counties, recently announced the return of its fall fundraiser. The event, featuring a concert by the Celtic Martins, will be held on Friday, Oct. 14, at 7 p.m. at Conestoga Mennonite Church, 2779 Main St. (Route 23), Morgantown.
This is the fourth time that the group has been featured during the fundraiser. “We have not had a concert fundraiser for over two years now due to the pandemic. Happily, the Celtic Martins will be back performing,” said Jill Waters, who founded SWM along with her husband, Sam. “It is a very popular concert and it’s a lot of fun. People love to bring their kids and grandkids. It’s a real fun evening for everyone.”
The Celtic Martins, a family band from Newmanstown, perform traditional Celtic music, as well as step dancing. The band includes fiddling
Martin sisters Emily, Melissa and Christy; brothers Brian on guitar, Zach on fiddle and Alex on drums and fiddle; their dad, Nelson, on guitar; their mother, Elaine, on bass; and drummer Elijah Roeder. For more information about the group and to listen to samples of its music, visit www.martinfamilyband.net.
There is no admission fee, but a freewill offering will be received. All monies collected will benefit SWM.
“October is Domestic Violence Awareness Month, so this fundraiser is important to our services, since we work hard to keep abused women safe,” said Jill.
In addition, Jill’s newly released book, “No One Will Ever Know,” will be available that evening. “My book is about my own journey through abuse,” Jill noted. “I have been working on it for five years. It’s been a long project, and I am glad I did it.”
She said that her own experience with abuse makes her very relatable to women who seek help from SWM. “I have clients who cover up abuse. They live in fear. I address that in the book,” she said, adding,
“I can counsel on a personal level.”
SWM began offering counseling services at Conestoga Mennonite Church in July of 2012. Help is offered to those dealing with a variety of issues such as anger, depression, fear and anxieties, addictions, selfesteem issues and broken relationships. The ministry also offers an array of services for victims of domestic violence. While the ministry is church-based, counseling services are offered to everyone, regardless of church or religious affiliation.
Jill has been offering virtual counseling for the last two years. Sam and the other counselors offer in-person sessions. “Everyone has their own specialty,” Jill noted. “Amy (Stoltzfus) deals with a lot of children’s trauma. My passion is for (counseling abused women), and Sam (counsels) men with anger issues.”
For more information about SWM or the fundraiser, call SWM at 610286-9555 or Conestoga Mennonite Church at 610-286-9124. More information about SWM can be found at www.still-waters-ministries.org or www.facebook.com/stillwatersPs23.

Since 1940, National Newspaper Week has been observed the first full week in October, so I thought it appropriate to share my thoughts on why supporting your local newspaper is more important than ever.
It’s a popular notion that the internet has marked the downfall of community newspapers. And, while many have stopped publishing due to tough economic times, the rising cost of newsprint, and other factors, your community newspapers can do something the internet can’t: We promote connections at a local level.

Headlight glare becomes dangerous when visibility is impaired to a point where the risk of accidents is heightened. Glare is a growing problem for many modern drivers due to the increased use of light emitting diodes in headlights.
Driving at night is challenging because pedestrians, cars and other obstacles are difficult to see once the sun sets, and headlight glare can cause further problems. A study from the U.S. Department of Transportation found that 88% of drivers noticed LED and HID headlight glare. While LED lights may not actually be brighter, their “cool” color temperature can make them appear so. Studies have found that blue and white light tends to hit people’s eyes harder, especially at night.
In addition, human eyes do not adjust to changes in lighting very quickly, according to Pierre Paul Driving School in New York City. The older a person gets, the longer his or her eyes take to adjust to changes in lighting. In fact, it can take up to seven seconds to recover from the blinding glare of headlights. That’s enough time to swerve off the road or potentially hit something. While glare can be problematic, drivers can take steps
to make nighttime driving safer.
- Clean the windshield. Dirt and grime found on the windshield can refract light and make glare worse. Therefore, clean all windows and mirrors thoroughly, inside and out.Repair scratches and cracks. Glare can be exacerbated by any imperfections in the windshield. Repair cracks or scratches promptly.
- Get a vision and health check. Changes to vision can
impact how glare affects certain individuals. Vitamin A deficiency can cause night blindness, also known as nyctalopia. Eye shape changes, including a condition called keratoconus, can affect vision. Cataracts and diabetes can also impair vision. Visit a primary care physician as well as an eye doctor to check for conditions that can make night vision worse.
- Change your line of sight. Do not look directly into oncoming headlights. Rather, look slightly down and to the right side of the road so that you are not focusing on the beams.
- Get glare-resistant coatings on eyeglasses. Speak with an optician about eyeglasses with a coating that can reduce the amount of glare. VisionCenters.com says standard plastic lenses reflect around 8% of the light that reaches glasses, while high-index lenses reflect up to 12% of available light. Anti-glare coating allows 99.5% of available light to reach the eyes, essentially eliminating glare. Those who don’t wear eyeglasses can purchase special anti-glare glasses to wear in highglare conditions, such as when looking at computer and phone screens.
- Flip your rearview mirror to night mode, if you have this option. This setting will make it appear as though lights coming from behind are dimmer.
- Take breaks. When glare makes driving difficult, take a break to help your eyes recover.
These are some of the steps people may take when glare becomes problematic while driving at night.

How To Maintain An Older Vehicle
New cars have been costly for quite some time, but those costs have spiked considerably since the onset of the COVID-19 pandemic. That unprecedented rise may lead many motorists to wonder how they can get more mileage out of their existing vehicles. According to data from Kelley Blue Book and Cox Automotive, the average cost of a new car in September 2021 was just over $45,000. That marked a $3,000 increase from June 2021 and a $5,000 increase from the end of 2020.
Drivers who may not be able to afford the cost of a new vehicle can take the following steps to keep their existing cars running smoothly for years to come.
- Take care of the timing belt. Engines may get all the glory, but they cannot run smoothly without a fully functional timing belt, which helps to synchronize movements of various components. Owner’s manuals may note when to replace the timing belt, but they generally must be replaced every 60,000 to 105,000 miles.
Although replacement is required infrequently, drivers can ask their mechanics to keep an eye on their timing belts. During the early months of the pandemic, many people learned that infrequent driving can cause a timing belt to fail before it reaches the projected mile marker. Aging drivers should
keep this fact in mind if they do not drive as much as they used to.
- Take care of the brakes and associated components. The experts at Popular Mechanics urge drivers of older vehicles to replace their brake fluid every two years.
Popular Mechanics also advises drivers whose cars are more than seven years old to replace the rubber brake lines when major brake work is required.
- Pay attention to oil levels. The older engines get, the more oil they burn. For this reason, owners of older vehicles should check their oil levels more often than they would if their vehicles were brand new. These checks also provide a way to discover leaks before they lead to potentially significant issues.
- Don’t skip maintenance appointments. Even if you’re still driving less due to the pandemic, it’s best to keep up with maintenance on any car, especially if the car is older. Routine tuneups and oil changes, which may need to become more frequent the older the vehicle gets, can keep cars running smoothly and protect the engine over the long haul.
The rising cost of new cars may compel people to keep their cars longer than they might have anticipated. A few simple maintenance measures may help to prolong the life of a vehicle.

Food will also be available, and there will be an ice cream truck on-site. “We will be grilling hamburgers and hot dogs outside, and we will be having homemade doughnuts, which will be delivered that morning,” said Patty Levengood, church Sunday school teacher and one of the event organizers. Varieties will include plain, cinnamon and powdered.
The event will also include a craft sale and a sale of white elephant treasures. Vendors will be set up inside the church’s fellowship hall.
Live music will be provided by The Happy Dutchmen German Band from Kutztown,
which is popular in Berks and Lehigh counties. The band performs wearing authentic German attire. “They do a lot of polkas and (Oktoberfest) songs. They are fun and entertaining,” said Levengood, noting that the band will be located in the picnic pavilion.
There will also be a pie baking contest. Participants are asked to bring a whole pie and the recipe. First-, second- and third-place prizes will be awarded. To enter the pie baking contest or reserve a craft table, call 484-520-6263 by Friday, Oct. 14. The event will be held rain or shine. In the event of severe weather, most activities will be moved indoors.
Mount Carmel UMC holds its Sunday service at 10 a.m. Children’s Sunday school is offered at the same time.
Oher programs at the church include a virtual coffee time, which is held at 10 a.m. on Wednesday mornings. People may access the program at www.mount carmelumc.org.
A men’s breakfast is held on the third Saturday of each month at 8 a.m. Men are asked to register by calling the church office at 610-4699151. The next scheduled breakfast will be on the morning of the Fall Festival.
The church also has a community garden program, which began in June of 2021. The community garden features raised-bed gardens surrounded by a fence. Those who plant vegetables in the
garden may take home what they grow or share the harvest with others.
“We fenced in a larger area this year and we had more people (participate),” Levengood noted.
The harvested produce, including tomatoes, was placed in bins outside the church this summer, and community members were invited to take whatever they needed. Other produce was donated to Mission First in Pottstown, which has a community meal program and an outside refrigeration unit that provides fresh food to people in need, along with a food box containing nonperishables.
Mount Carmel UMC is located just north of St. Peter’s Village. For more information, call the church office, visit the previously mentioned website or www .facebook.com/Mount CarmelUMCStPeters.

their 35- or 40-foot buses to the stadium,” said Lauren Henderson Pignetti, director of development for Humane Pennsylvania.
“Folks going to the Senior Expo are being asked to bring human food for Helping Harvest and pet food for Humane Pennsylvania. The idea is to fill the bus. This is a good opportunity to help both organizations all at one location.”
All food, as well as personal care items, will be used by Helping Harvest to aid Berks County and Schuylkill County residents. Each year, more than 100,000 people receive assistance from the agency’s fresh food bank. For more details, visit www.helping harvest.org.
The pet food will be distributed through the Spike’s Pet Pantry program, which serves residents of Berks and Lancaster counties. “We will have our box truck on-site. Once the event is over, we will bring donations back to the warehouse,” Pignetti said. “Ideally, we would like people to bring bags of dry dog food and dry cat food. We will have folks on hand to help unload donations from the cars and into the bus.”
According to Pignetti, from January through July, Spike’s Pet Pantry has given away more than 100,000 pounds of pet food to those in need. More information is available at www.humane pa.org/healthypets/spikes -pet-pantry.
She added that everyone is invited to donate, whether or not they attend the Senior Expo.

There will also be health screenings, educational seminars and live entertainment, including a performance by Jeff Krick Sr., an Elvis impersonator. “When the weather is good, we will get more people,” explained club member Joanne Henny, noting that between 15 and 20 people generally participate. However, club membership is not required to take part, as all hikes are open to the public. “It’s always good to have more people,” she said.
Henny noted that the group mostly consists of middleaged people and seniors, but people of all ages are welcome. “Sometimes we get young people who are recuperating from injury,” she noted.
She explained that if walking on a trail, for example, attendees will walk for about an hour and then return to the starting location. “The other clubs are too fast or they walk too far. This is a shorter distance,” said Henny. “Some walk a little faster than others, but at one point we wait for everyone (to catch up).”
Each walk is followed by lunch at a local restaurant. “We
walk to eat,” said Henny with a smile. “Most people go to socialize. (The outings) are not difficult walks; they are mostly (on flat surfaces). The goal is to get people out and about.”
Those who would like to join the Strollers group are asked to pay a nominal yearly membership fee. Members are given special invitations to the annual summer hike and picnic, a Christmas hike and luncheon and a yearly overnight trip.
Members receive the schedule of hikes, which are typically listed weekly in the Community Calendar section of the Community Courier.
Each outing features a hike leader. “The hike leaders pick the locations. We take turns each week picking a place,” noted Henny. “I grew up in Reading but did not realize how many trails there were.”
The next upcoming hike will be on Saturday, Oct. 8, when the Strollers will hike at the Blue Marsh Lake Stilling
Basin, 1280 Palisades Drive, Leesport. The group will meet at 10 a.m. in the Game Commission parking lot.
On Saturday, Oct. 15, the hike will be at Hibernia Park’s Hatfield House, 151 Hatfield Road, Coatesville. The group will meet at 10 a.m. in the Hatfield House parking area.
The hike on Saturday, Oct. 22, will be at the Nolde Forest Environmental Education Center, 3025 New Holland Road, Reading. The group will meet at 10 a.m. at Fire Gate No. 3.
The final hike in October, set for Saturday, Oct. 29, will be along the newer section of the Schuylkill River Trail in Towpath Park, 1675 New Schuylkill Road, Pottstown. Attendees may meet at Boscov’s East, 4500 Perkiomen Ave., Reading, at 9:30 a.m. to carpool to the area or meet at 10 a.m. in the park.

Chester County To Present Color 5K Run/Walk
BY FRANCINE FULTON
The sixth annual Chester County Color 5K run/walk will take place on Saturday, Oct. 8. This year’s event, the sixth annual, will be held on the Chester Valley Trail and will start and end in Exton Park, 122 Church Farm Lane, Exton. This is a new venue this year; previously, the fundraiser took place at Everhart Park in West Chester.
The timed 5K is open to both runners and walkers.
On-site registration will begin at 8 a.m., followed by the race start at 9 a.m. Medals will be given out for the first-, second- and third-place finishers in various age categories.
Participants will be doused in different-colored powder at the start of the race and along the course. “At different points throughout the race course, there are color stations and people will be doused in color as they run past,” explained Rebecca Brain, Chester County public information officer. “It’s cornstarch and completely biodegradable, and it washes out.”
There will be an option for runners and walkers who choose not to participate. “Runners who don’t want to interact with the color can take a route around the color stations that allows them not to be sprayed with powder,” noted Brain.
Participants will travel along the Chester Valley Trail through Exton Park and the
neighboring corporate center.
“It’s a two-lap course, and those who are walking can just walk one lap if they prefer,” Brain pointed out. “We will have the fire police out
there to control traffic.”
The presenting sponsor for the 2022 Chester County Color 5K is the John R. Gailey III and JoEllen Berger Charitable Fund.

Local Newspapers
Some say that because people can tweet, blog, surf, shop, and search online, no one reads newspapers anymore, but you just proved that to be a myth. Rather than being replaced by all the noise of “instant” media, your free local paper has become more important than ever. We are a part of your neighborhood. We shine a spotlight on people and organizations that make your town a better place to live, work, and play. No, they probably won’t
get a million views on TikTok, but they are heroes who live down the street and are making a positive difference in our community.
In the past year the publisher of this newspaper, Engle Printing & Publishing Co., Inc. (EPC) has featured more than 1,500 front-page articles benefiting more than 1,000 local nonprofit organizations in Lancaster, Chester, Berks, York, and Dauphin counties. Those numbers don’t take into account the
thousands of press releases that make their way into our papers each year.
With all the talk about social media, why do we continue to publish free community newspapers? It’s who we are and who we’ve been for nearly 70 years. We live here, too, and we want to keep our communities thriving as much as you do.
If you know of an organization or individual making a positive impact on your

Viking Ship To Sail On Leif Ericson Day
BY FRANCINE FULTON
Members of Leif Ericson Viking Ship Inc. (LEVS) invite the community to celebrate Leif Ericson Day by witnessing the sailing of the Norseman, a 40-foot Viking ship replica, on Marsh Creek Lake on Sunday, Oct. 9.
LEVS membership chairman Hildegard Lindstrom explained that in 1964, the U.S. Congress, by joint resolution, declared Oct. 9 as Leif Ericson Day; the sail is always held on or near that date.
The launching of the ship will take place at 11 a.m. by costumed Viking re-enactors from the western launch area of Marsh Creek Lake. The GPS address for the location is 800 N. Reeds Road, Downingtown. Visitors will be invited to take a closer look at the Norseman in the water and talk with the crew.
At noon, there will be introductions of honored guests, as well as the reading of a proclamation from the president of the United States and the singing of “The Star-Spangled Banner.” At the conclusion of the ceremony, a wreath will be dedicated in honor of the life and accomplishments of Leif Ericson. The Norseman will then sail until about 2:30 p.m.
LEVS, a Chester Countybased nonprofit, is a living history educational organization that was formed to educate people about the Viking people and Leif Ericson, the first European known to have discovered and settled on the North American continent.
On the day of the sail, the group will have souvenir Tshirts that say, “Leif Landed First,” along with books and other merchandise.
Crew members sail the ship on Marsh Creek Lake each year, and they also make appearances at various festivals
County Offices Collect School Supplies
and events. “We took part in the Kennett Square Memorial Day parade, and in July, we sailed on Lake Chautauqua during the Scandinavian Folk Festival at Jamestown Community College in Jamestown, N.Y,” said Lindstrom. “In August, we went to a Swedish Festival in Mount Jewett in western Pennsylvania. For Labor Day weekend, we were at Scandinavian Fest in northern New Jersey.”
LEVS members, dressed in authentic Viking-style clothing, also bring the ship to local elementary schools and
present educational programs. This fall, the group has plans to visit West Bradford, Brandywine Wallace, Springton Manor and Lionville elementary schools in the Downingtown Area School District.
LEVS is seeking people to join the group and help to maintain the ship. For more information, visit www.face book.com/LEVS.Norseman or contact Lindstrom. The event at Marsh Creek Lake will be held rain or shine, unless there is a downpour or high winds.
Color 5K
Funds generated through this year’s Color 5K will support Chester County’s Community Outreach Prevention and Education (COPE) program.
Through the COPE program, overdose survivors who are being treated in emergency rooms at any hospital in Chester County can meet with a certified recovery specialist within an hour of entering the ER. The peer specialist is available to speak with the overdose survivor and provide personal support and a direct connection to treatment and recovery services.
COPE peer specialists also work with the overdose survivor’s family and friends to advise them on how to navigate insurance coverage, ways to get treatment and how to obtain and use naloxone. The service is available 24 hours a day, seven days a week.
“The purpose of the Color 5K is to raise funds to tackle opioid and heroin addiction with a family-friendly event but also to reduce the stigma of substance use disorder,” said Brain.
Previous Chester County Color 5K events have attracted thousands of participants and supporters and, combined, have raised more than $200,000. “We have everybody. We have serious runners, fun runners and people of all ages,” Brain noted.
For more information or to register for the 2022 Chester County Color 5K, visit www.chesco.org/color5K. Sponsorship opportunities are available at various levels for organizations and individuals. Those interested in sponsoring the event can contact Brain at rbrain@chesco.org.
