Althoughvehicles of all makes and models will be stars of the annual car show presented by the Woman’s Club of Birdsboro, the event will also offer other attractions, including a cake walk, music, craft vendors, homemade food and an opportunity to win prizes.
The club will present its 24th show, rain or shine, on Sunday, Oct. 2, from 8 a.m. to 3 p.m. at Daniel Boone Area High School, 501 Chestnut St. (Route 345), Birdsboro. Compeer: Wellness Starts With Friendship”
BY FRANCINE FULTON
An important aspect of Compeer Chester County, a nonprofit organization that pairs people living with mental health conditions with volunteer friends from the community, is social interaction. Not only do pairs enjoy activities on their own, but the organization also holds community get-togethers.
Most recently, Compeer presented its annual summer picnic at the Albert C. Miller Park in Exton. More than 30 people attended, enjoying box lunches, socializing and games, including cornhole. Some attendees also took walks around the park. Members of the Compeer advisory council helped with welcoming people, handing out lunches and supervising the games.
According to Sherry Thompsen, Compeer outreach coordinator, one attendee described the picnic as “the best day I’ve had in a longPriortime.”to the summer outing, the Compeer Bowling and Pizza Party was held in March at The Palace Bowling & Entertainment Center in Downingtown, the organization’s first in-person event since before the pandemic.
Thompsen also announced that the international Compeer organization has adopted a new logo, which depicts the “O” in Compeer as heartshaped and a new tagline, “Mental Wellness Starts With Friendship.” “Compeer International asked all affiliates to start using this new logo. It provides a consistent

Glen Moore United Methodist Church (GUMC) will present its first antique and classic car show on Saturday, Oct. 1, from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. All types of pre-1990s vehicles are welcome.
Those who would like to take part in the show should arrive between 9 and 10 a.m. Vehicle owners will be asked to pay a registration fee. There will be no charge for spectators. In addition to the display of cars, there will be music, food and games, includingVehiclescornhole.willbeparked in the church parking lot and the grassy field next to the church. Parking for spectators will be available at Wagenseller Park, which is located next to the church.
Prizes will be awarded for Best in Show, Best in Class,

The church will also be open that day for tours. “We will have John Miller, historian, who will talk about the church,” said pastor Dan Hepner. “It is 149 years old; we will celebrate our 150th year in 2023. There is a lot of history here.”
According to Hepner, proceeds from car registration fees will be used for the church’s roof funding project. “There is a brand-new roof on this church. Every penny will go to paying back the debt,” he noted.
Hepner was appointed GUMC pastor in the summer of 2021. He also continues to work part time at Hopewell United Methodist Church (UMC) in Downingtown. “It’s called a two-point charge,” he explained. “I am liaison to men’s ministries at Hopewell and the lead pastor at Glen Moore.” While at Hopewell, Hepner held 12 car shows, but this is the first one being offered at EnsuringGUMC.that the church received a new roof was the pastor’s latest project. “Our energy continues to grow

American Heritage Girls (AHG) was started in 1995 by a group of parents living in Ohio who wanted to offer a faith-based alternative to Girl Scouting. AHG troop members enjoy all of the same types of programs and activities, including camping, earning badges and completing community service projects.
Locally, two AHG troops have formed: Troop 1031, which meets at Forks of the Brandywine Evangelical Presbyterian Church in Glenmoore, and Troop 1234, which is chartered by St. Norbert Parish in Paoli.
Serena Farace of Downingtown, age 14, who is a member
of Troop 1234, explained that the troop is open to girls of all denominations. “American Heritage Girls now has troops in all 50 states,” she noted. “There are many different faith denominations within the group, but we all worship oneTroopsGod.” are divided by program level into the following units: Pathfinder, ages 5 and 6; Tender Hearts, ages 6 to 9; Explorers, ages 9 to 12; Pioneers, ages 12 to 14; and Patriots, ages 14 to 18.
“Older girls have the ability to hold leadership positions and to be mentors to the younger girls,” said Serena, who is a member of Patriot group. “At the Patriot level, girls can decide to earn the Stars and Stripes Award, which colleges recognize as a big accomplishment.” Like the Girl Scout Gold Award, the Stars and Strips Award requires the planning and completion of a community serviceSerena’sproject.troop has camped at French Creek State Park in Elverson, and it took part in a multi-troop outing at Frances Slocum State Park in
Wyoming, which is located in northeastern Pennsylvania. Every April, there is also a multi-troop camping event at Innabah Camp and Retreat Center in Spring City.
“We do a lot of fun activities, many of which I would never have taken part in if I wasn’t a part of AHG,” Serena shared. “There are certain requirements we have to fulfill in order to earn badges and patches, and those
requirements push me to go beyond my comfort zone. For instance, I have never gone camping in my life, but so far, I have gone on two camping trips, both for two nights each. I would never have thought I could do that, but I persevered and learned a lot about myself after the experience.”Serena’smother, Theresa, said that a friend recommended the AHG program when the Faraces were looking for an activity similar to Scouting. “We wanted a Christianbased organization,” she said.
“It’s for all denominations, not just Catholic, and (the troop has) girls in private school, public school and homeschoolers.”Shesaidthat the troops fundraise by taking part in a read-a-thon and garnering pledges. “All the money goes to the troop,” Theresa said. County Works To Digitize Historical Documents
In less than two years, Chester County expects to have its most historic documents available online. Thanks to improved scanning equipment, Chester County’s Archives & Records Services has accelerated the process of scanning and digitizing documents dating back to 1681. The project’s goal is to make the collection publicly available on the county’s website so that people can easily acquire historical information.
The county installed a new
scanner in January 2020, just before the pandemic, making this project possible. To date, about 40% of the Archives’ collection - which includes both microfilm and physical documents - has been digitized.
A climate-controlled room at the county’s Government Services Center in West Chester houses the documents and keeps them stable. Temperature and humidity fluctuations degrade paper, so the storage room temperature always
remains roughly 65 degrees with 45% relative humidity.
The upgraded scanner has a superior lens and creates images faster than the model it replaced, purchased in 2007. The new technology scans documents in color and at a higher DPI (dots per inch), so the image quality is sharper. In addition, technology has made storage space much less expensive, allowing easier storage of larger files.
Cliff Parker, who served as the
county’s archivist for 20 years before taking on his current role of Archives & Records director, noted that one of the documents to be scanned is the first Chester County court docket documenting the county’s earliest governmental activities from 1681 to 1697. A second corresponding volume spans 1697 to 1710. The docket records every function of county government, including row offices, administrative functions, and court activity. Parker

look for Compeer programs, regardless of location,” she noted.Aspart of the program, Compeer volunteers are paired with individuals of the same gender and geographical area who share common interests. Pairs share activities such as attending a sporting event or a movie or going for coffee or lunch.
Individuals in the program have been diagnosed with conditions such as depression, social anxiety and posttraumatic stress disorder, and they are referred to the program by a mental health professional.Compeeris always in need of volunteers, who must take part in a phone interview, complete an application and have appropriate clearances. “We are in special need of older male volunteers age 55plus,” Thompsen noted.

can call or text 988 if they are experiencing a suicidal, substance use and/or mental health crisis. This new number, modeled after 911, went live on July 17. It offers 24/7 access to trained counselors who can talk with the callers and also direct them to additional resources for mental health and substance use issues. “If someone is concerned about a friend or family member, they can use that number as well.” Thompsen noted.Compeer Chester County is a program of Mental Health Partnerships (MHP). It is funded by the Chester County Department of Mental Health/Intellectual & Developmental Disabilities (MH/IDD) and private donations.Formore information, including volunteer opportunities, contact Donna Kueny, pro-
noted that some of the documents date to before William Penn first came to his colony in October Commissioner1682. Josh Maxwell added that the records include a variety of documents, such as tax records, Poor House records and property records. Chester County’s Poor House was established in 1800 in West Bradford for the employment and support of people in financial difficulty in the county. The facility served poor and elderly people with physical and mental disabilities.
Chicken Barbecue Sale Scheduled
The Chester County 4-H Program Committee will sell chicken barbecue dinners for takeout on Saturday, Oct. 1, at the Romano 4-H Center, 1841 Horseshoe Pike, Honey Brook. Dinners will be sold from 3 to 6 p.m.
The cost of a dinner will include a half-chicken, a
baked potato, coleslaw, a dessert, and a drink. Tickets will be available through Friday, Sept. 30. For tickets and details, contact Audrey Reith at alr5762@psu.edu or 610696-3500. All proceeds will support 4-H programs in Chester County.
Chester County Commissioners chair Marian Moskowitz explained that the records being digitized are those considered to be historic, permanent records. While the county preserves every existing physical record created before 1920, retention policy changes meant that only certain documents were maintained after that time. Today, less than 10% of the records created by the county each year are considered a permanent record of historicalCommissionervalue. Michelle Kichline said this conversion
project is about access. The problem with storing records on microfilm, she said, is that the user needs a machine to look them up, and nobody is selling or repairing those machines as they break down. In addition, most of the county’s microfilm is stored off-site.
The Pennsylvania Historical and Museum Commission has a microfilm security storage program. If a user wants to view a document, the commission must make a duplicate and send it to Chester County, making for a lengthy process.
