Church Supports Pantry Backpack Program

Honey Brook Presbyterian Church (HBPC) recently showed its support of the Honey Brook Food Pantry’s Backpack Program, which provides backpacks full of nonperishable food items to students in need during the school year.

The church deacons organized a food collection in July and August specifically for the Backpack Program, and this summer, youngsters in HBPC’s vacation Bible school (VBS) raised $370 for the cause. “As part of vacation Bible school we held in June for four nights, it was our mission to support the Honey Brook Food Pantry Backpack Program,� said HBPC member Gwynne Sweatlock, VBS

instructor. “Over those four nights, they brought in donations every night random change and some bills. On the last night, we collected $50. And it was only about 18 kids. We (explained to the youths) that in Honey Brook there is a huge hunger issue and there are hungry kids right in their backyard.�

Honey Brook Food Pantry volunteer Patti Frank, who is also a member of the pantry’s board of directors, has been in charge of the Backpack Program for the past four years. She explained that the students who received the backpacks are from the Honey Brook and Twin Valley elementary centers.

The students are chosen for the program by the school nurse.

Chester County 4-H will hold its annual benefit auction on Sept. 28 at the Romano 4-H Center in Honey Brook. The event will include silent and live auctions.

The annual Chester County 4-H Center Benefit Auction, which has been held for more than 20 years, will take place rain or shine on Saturday, Sept. 28, at the Romano 4-H Center, located at 1841 Horseshoe Pike, Honey Brook.

The event will include a silent auction that will be held from 4:30 to 6 p.m.,

followed by a live auction from 6 p.m. to approximately 10 p.m. Admission is free, and all are invited to attend.

decor for the holidays, such as handcrafted pumpkins and ghosts for Halloween, as well as wreaths, Santas, lighted snowmen and painted trees and other decorations for Christmas. “ We will have country crafts, Nativity scenes made of wood and wooden snowmen that can sit outdoors,” said crafter Mary Kilareski.

A lot of the crafts that will be offered for sale were repurposed from other materials.

For example, Kilareski pointed out that there will be pumpkins made from bushel baskets,

All proceeds from the craft show will benefit the fire company and Hopewell Love In the Name of Christ (Love INC), a charitable organization that helps with the day-to-day needs of Birdsboro-area residents. The Friends of Daniel Boone Homestead will present Heritage Day at Daniel Boone Homestead, 400 Daniel Boone Road, Birdsboro, on Saturday, Sept. 28, from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. The homestead will celebrate the arrival of fall with a living history event featuring horse-drawn wagon rides and a variety of 18th-century demonstrations, trades and hands-on activities.

Visitors can enjoy a scenic horsedrawn wagon ride through the historic area with draft horses Hank and Hunter and watch the Bertolet sawmill in action.

There will be interpretive presentations throughout the day, with presenters including Native American Darius Puff.

Farmers Day Association Plans Fair

The 2019 New Holland Farmers Day Association Fair will be held from Wednesday, Oct. 2, through Saturday, Oct. 5, on Main Street, Roberts Avenue, Franklin

Street, and Fulton Street. The fair will kick off on Oct. 2, with the parade, which will begin at 7 p.m. A number of marching bands are scheduled to participate in the parade’s Spectacle of Bands competition, which awards prizes in a number of categories, including the Cup of Honor. The 2018 Cup of Honor winner was from Daniel Boone High School. The winning band will stop at the judges’ stand to receive the award and then perform for spectators. The fair will also feature a midway, exhibits in a range of categories, games, and a variety of food vendors.

According to Linda DiBartolo, concession manager with the Farmers Day Association, the 88th annual fair will focus on bringing back some cherished events and activities.

First, under the direction of parade manag-

er Paulene Redding, the tug-of-war will be held on Thursday, Oct. 3, and Saturday, Oct. 5. Pulls will begin at 8 p.m. each night.

Cash prizes and trophies will be awarded to the top four teams. Redding has lined up a number of participants, including firefighters and employees of local construction companies, among others. As of midSeptember, only three openings were left for teams to take part.

The long john eating contest will also be held this year on Oct. 5, beginning at 2:45 p.m. “That was a very popular event,” said DiBartolo of the competition for youths ages 8 to 18. Registration will open at 1:45 p.m. at the contest location on the corner of Franklin Street and Railroad Avenue. In addition, pony rides will be held in an area adjacent to Main Street. Dancin’ Boots will be held on Friday, Oct. 4, beginning at 7:30 p.m. at the stand on the corner of Franklin Street and Railroad Avenue.

The animal competitions are a long-held tradition at the fair. For 2019, animals will be judged in the tents on Fulton Street.

Swine will be judged on Tuesday, Oct. 1, at 5:30 p.m. Goats will be judged at 1:30 p.m. on Oct. 3, and sheep will be judged the same day at 4 p.m. The competition is open to 4-H and FFA members from Lancaster County.

There will also be another food vendor offering lunch items and snacks.

Chester County Commissioners Michelle Kichline, Kathi Cozzone and Terence Farrell recently approved a resolution calling for the formation of a countywide 2020 census Complete Count Committee (CCC) to encourage all residents’ participation in the census survey. The commissioners’ approval was given on Sept. 12.

The CCC is a group of volunteers who will, at the local level, develop and implement a 2020 census awareness campaign based upon their knowledge of the local

community. The CCC consists of government and community leaders from education, business, health care and other community organizations.

According to commissioners chair Michelle Kichline, census data impacts grant programs that are federally funded and population-based, government and business planning and state and federal legislative districts, which are population-based. The county’s 2019 adopted budget includes $190.2 million in federal and state grants, which represent 40 per-

cent of Chester County’s $476 million operating budget.

Approximately 522,000 people currently live in Chester County, according to 2018 census data. This grew from the 2010 census count of 498,886 residents in Chester County. The county’s population is expected to increase 30 percent over the next 30 years.

Census Day is Wednesday, April 1, 2020. Every household will have the option to respond to the short survey online, by mail, or by phone. By law, the Census Bureau must keep all responses confidential and is not permitted to share answers with any other government

On Oct. 5, competitions of a different kind will be held when the baby and pet parades are judged at 1 p.m. Babies may be entered as walkers or as part of floats, which include wagons, strollers, or coaches. Pets may be entered on floats with one or multiple pets.

Other categories will include most unusual pet, pet and owner look alike without costumes, a pet team theme where owners must be costumed, and most beautiful cat.

Exhibits will be located in the New Holland Farmers Fair Building at the corner of Franklin Street and Roberts Avenue and at the Boy Scout Home on Roberts Avenue. Three special baking competitions to be held this year will include the angel food cake contest, the blue ribbon apple pie contest, and the homemade chocolate cake contest.

Fresh produce will be offered in the live auction as well as wheat straw, fine art, pet food and more.

“For the live auction, I have a handmade quilt, hand-braided rugs, pumpkins, mums and mushrooms,” said Pippin. “We will have some equine (supplies) and donations from various 4-H clubs. This year, we will have a Movie Basket in the live auction with a gift card to a movie theater.”

A returning attraction this year will be a cash-only table. “Basically, you can just purchase items from the table directly,” explained Pippin. “New this year will be 2019 reusable grocery bags that say Chester County 4-H Center on them.”

Youth members from local 4-H clubs donate items they have purchased or made for gift baskets. Additionally, 4-H youths will provide assistance during the auction, serving as runners and helping display items for auctioneer Bill McCauley.

4-H members and their families also help gather donated items. “I start sending out (donation) letters in July and August, and some of the 4-H members follow up with businesses in the area,” Pippin said.

“Older 4-H members or parents who take a couple of kids (will also pick up items). The donors love it when the kids come.”

The Dairy Cart will also be on-site throughout the auction to offer refreshments, including milkshakes and ice cream.

“We will also have pulled pork sandwiches, macaroni and cheese and, new this year, walking tacos,” Pippin said, noting that there will also be a baked goods table and beverages, including soda, water and coffee. “There will also be combo meals where you can get a (main dish) and a baked good and a beverage (for a fee),” she said.

Organizers are seeking donations for the auction, including handmade items, farm products, antiques, gift certificates, collectibles and artwork. Especially needed are larger items for the live auction. People may drop off items at the 4-H Center on Wednesday and Thursday, Sept. 25 and 26, from 6 to 8 p.m. and on Friday, Sept. 27, from 6 to 8:30 p.m.

Volunteers are also needed to provide assistance on the day of the auction. Those interested in volunteering are asked to contact Pippin at amygracepippin@gmail.com or Toni Stuetz, 4-H educator, at tstuetz@psu.edu.

Proceeds from the auction will be used to help support the cost of maintaining the 4-H Romano Center. “The 4-H Center is free to use for all the 4-H clubs in Chester County,” Pippin noted.

The 4-H Center contains restroom facilities and meeting rooms, as well as a large exhibition and activity area. It is used during the annual 4-H Fair, along with the livestock building that houses the swine, dairy and goat exhibits.

From January through April this year, Girl Scout Lizzy Stahelek organized dance parties for children of all ages with special needs as part of a service project in conjunction with pursuing the Girl Scout Silver Award. The dances were so successful that Lizzy has decide to continue the parties this fall.

The dance parties, themed “Everybody In,” will be held at Grove United Methodist Church, 490 W. Boot Road, West Chester.

Dances will be held several times each month beginning on Saturday, Sept. 28, from 10 to 11 a.m.

Lizzy’s younger sister, Ally, who has special needs, was the inspiration for the project. “Kids can dance their own way and enjoy the music in their own way,” said Lizzy. “The kids will not have to follow dance steps; it will be a dance party.”

Lizzy said that between 16 and 20 participants attended the dances held earlier this year. They were accompanied by volunteers, including Lizzy’s friends and family members as well as members of the Best Buddies organization.

Margaret shared that Everybody In provides a place for youngsters, like Ally, to enjoy dancing in a comfortable, safe place without having to learn any formal dance steps. “There wasn’t a place for someone like our daughter, so Lizzy wanted to create something where everyone can participate,” she explained. “(The dances are) great. We love them, and we can’t for them to start.”

“The children remain anonymous,” Frank explained. “If families have four children or more, they get two backpacks. We serve approximately 80 children each year when school is in session.”

Volunteer mothers from each of the schools come to the pantry to fill the backpacks twice each month. In October, there will be three distributions. “We have all the food set out, and the moms come and fill the backpacks,” said Frank.

“The moms take the backpacks back to the school nurse, and she gives them to the kids, who take the backpacks home on Fridays.”

The food items are stored in backpacks so that other students in the school are unaware that the family is in need of food. “They are plain black backpacks so no one can bully (the students) or make fun of them,” Frank said. “It takes time to pull the food together, but it’s so rewarding. Some of our families live in a hotel and have a hot plate and microwave. We do our best to help them.”

The backpacks are filled with at least 15 healthy nonperishable items like peanut butter and juices, as well as tuna and chicken, which can now be purchased in foil packages. “Sometimes (the recipients) are only in first or second grade, so it can’t be loaded with cans,” Frank noted. “We try to give them food which will fill them up and that they can make themselves, like ramen noodles.

(Also included) in the boxes are cereal, shelf-stable milk, oatmeal and lots of nuts. We also give them snacks, which are reasonably healthy, like granola bars.

We don’t give out candy.”

The Honey Brook Mobile Food Pantry is located at the Good Food Distribution Center, 5064 Horseshoe Pike, Honey Brook. Two distributions are held each month - on the second Wednesday from 10 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. and on the fourth Wednesday from 4 to 6:30 p.m. The See Backpack Program pg 9

After the opening event on Sept. 28, upcoming dances will be held on Oct. 12 and 26; Nov. 16 and 23; Dec. 14; Jan. 18, 2020; Feb. 1 and 22, 2020; and March 7 and 21, 2020. It is not necessary to register for the events, and participants can attend as many dance parties as they choose.

All attendees must be accompanied by a parent or adult guardian who must stay with them during the hourlong session. Siblings are welcome. Dancers are encouraged to bring bottled water or other beverages.
