“It’s a true community day,” said Poole Forge executive director Dawn Ekdahl when describing the annual celebration of Poole Forge Day. “Except for (purchasing) food and tickets for the turtle race, everything else is free.”

This year, Poole Forge Day will take place at Historic Poole Forge, 1940 Main St., Narvon, on Saturday, Sept. 17, from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m.

Arts and crafts will also be available for children in the pavilion, including twig art, where children can make crafts using items from nature. The popular goat races will take place in the afternoon. This year, instead of an obstacle course, the goats will run a straight line course. “It’s funny. People love it,” said Ekdahl. There will also be a turtle race in the afternoon. Visitors who “purchase” green rubber turtles that will float down the Conestoga River will be in the running for prizes. “The first turtle across the line gets the grand prize,” noted Ekdahl. There will also be smaller prizes for the other top finishers.

The annual celebration of Harmony Day will take place in Honey Brook on Saturday, Sept. 17. In addition to communitywide yard sales at the homes of local residents, the event will feature a Family Fun Fest being presented by the Honey Brook Community Partnership (HBCP) from 8 a.m. to 2 p.m. at the Honey Brook Fire Company, 679 Firehouse Lane. Family Fun Fest events will include food sales, children’s activities, a flea market and vendors and crafters. See Harmony Day pg 2 Poole Forge Day

All’s Fair In New Holland

The New Holland Farmers Fair is an event steeped in tradition, yet it is new and different each year. This year, the Farmers Day Association, which organizes the fair, is celebrating the 90th event, and the directors have made some changes to keep things exciting. The 2022 New Holland Fair will be held from Wednesday, Sept. 28, through Saturday, Oct. 1, on Main Street, Roberts Avenue, Franklin Street, and Fulton Street. The fair will kick off on Sept. 28 with the parade, which will begin at 7 p.m. The fair will feature a midway, exhibits in a range of categories, a long john eating contest, pet and baby parades, games, and a variety of food vendors. Fair president Paulene Redding has been handling the parade for many years. In 2021, she changed the lineup based on requests from high school bands that travel to take part. This year, Redding has designated specially priced sponsorships for Division 1 of the parade to help cover the costs of upgrades to the association’s building at the corner of Roberts Avenue and Franklin Street. Those wishing to help with this effort may call 717-354-5880. New this year will be nightly entertainment on a stage at the corner of Main Street and Custer Avenue. The Kracker Beez will play on Thursday, Sept. 29. The Jess Zimmerman Band will perform on Friday, Sept. 30, and Josh Squared Band will take to the stage on Oct. 1. “It’s going to be a lot of fun. It’s really good quality entertainment,” said Kristie Overly, who handles premiums for the fair. This year New Holland will select a fair queen to send to the state competition. The crowning of the queen will take place at the Farmers Fair building on Monday, Sept. 26, at 7 p.m. Queen candidates must be exhibiting something in the farm show, and the queen will be judged based on a personal interview, knowledge and experience of New Holland Fair, a presentation about the New Holland Fair, a written essay, poise, appearance, and ability to communicate. The queen and her court will ride in the

The American Helicopter Museum and Education Center (AHMEC) has announced JoeBen Bevirt, founder and CEO of Joby Aviation Inc., as the recipient of its annual Achievement Award. The award, presented to a person or organization that has made a significant impact to furthering vertical flight during the past year, is presented during the museum’s Gala fundraiser, which will be held this year on Saturday, Oct. 8, from 6 to 9:30 p.m. Brian Garrett-Glaser, Joby’s senior communications strategist, will accept the award on behalf of Bevirt and the company. He will also deliver the Gala’s keynote address about the revolutionary potential of electric vertical takeoff and landing (eVTOL) aircraft. Bevirt established Joby Aviation Inc., a California-based company developing all-electric aircraft for commercial passenger service, in 2009 while exploring electric motors, flight software, and lithium-ion batteries. Since 2012, Joby has collaborated with NASA’s electric flight projects, including the X57 and LEAPTech. Working with various designs and models throughout the years, the company chose its current configuration and began a rigorous flight testing program. By 2020, the enterprise’s pre-production prototype had flown more than 5,300 miles, including a flight of 154.6 miles on a single charge. Joby has teamed with Toyota and Uber, achieved U.S. Air Force approval, and completed its first FAA production conformity inspection toward becoming the first company to receive type certification from the FAA for eVTOL aircraft. Bob Beggs, AHMEC co-founder and award chairman, noted that Joby’s goal is to create an electric ridesharing operation. For more information, contact AHMEC at 610-4369600 or visit helicopter.museum.www.american lb. lb. lb. $1.99 lb.
