St. Peter Catholic Church, 2835 Manor Road (Route 82), West Brandywine, will host “Discovering Christ,” a seven-week series designed for people who want to learn more about Christ. Sessions will be held on Sundays, Sept. 22 to Nov. 10, from noon to 2:30 p.m. in the church’s Celebration Center. Members of the Senior Connections group meet at Conestoga Mennonite Church, 2779 Main St. (Route 23), Morgantown, on the second Thursday of each month. All local residents age 60 and older are invited to attend. The group will meet on Sept. 12 at noon to enjoy a free meal, followed by a program on “Bees and Beekeeping” by beekeeper Nevin Martin. A day trip to the historic Bowmansville Roller Mill in Narvon will be held on Oct. 3. Participants will meet at noon for a trip that will include free packed lunches and a tour. Transportation to and from the mill will be provided. Senior Connections will meet at noon on Nov. 14 for a free Thanksgiving meal followed by a program of praise and thanksgiving.

Poole Forge Day To Offer Family Fun Poole Forge Day, featuring children’s activities, food, crafts, live music, pony rides, goat races, a volleyball tournament and more, will take place at Historic Poole Forge, 1940 Main St., Narvon, on Saturday, Sept. 14, from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. Admission and parking are free. The entire Poole Forge property, which was once part of the local ironmaking community, will be utilized throughout the day. Activities are designed to provide fun for people of all ages. “It’s really a community day. We celebrate the community with our neighbors and our volunteers,” said Dawn Rise Ekdahl, executive director. “We hope many people will come join us. This is a great place for kids; there is a lot to do. It is really a family-oriented event.” The day will begin at the picnic pavilion, where there will be a hands-on wildlife display of local mammals and

The Berks County Parks and Recreation Department will present “The Reading Railroad: Then and Now” on Sunday, Sept. 15, at 2 p.m. at Gring’s Mill Barn, 2083 Tulpehocken Road, Wyomissing. Dale Woodland from the Reading Technical and Historical Society will discuss and show what has happened to the lines of the Reading Railroad since they disappeared into the Conrail system in 1976. Neighbors Caring and Sharing, a Christian women’s group that meets weekly at Conestoga Mennonite Church in Morgantown, will begin its 33rd year on Tuesday, Sept. 17, with a program from 9:15 to 11 a.m. The theme of the first meeting will be “Come and Meet the Women of the Bible.” The opening meeting will feature a program and a time for fellowship, as well as snacks and beverages. “We’re going to be featuring three women from the Bible; we will have a skit about the different women’s lives,” explained Tina Essick, program chair. “We will also play a get-to-know-you game and then (enjoy) food from Bible See Women’s Group pg 6

Serene Green To Perform Bluegrass Concert

Cordell Huyard, director of Cavod Theatre, cannot keep his enthusiasm about the group’s fall show from bubbling over. “‘The Pirates of Penzance’ is such a fun show. It’s hilarious,” gushed Huyard. “Audiences walk away having really enjoyed it (because it’s) such a crowd favorite.” “The Pirates of Penzance” will be staged at Cavod Theatre, 685 W. Main St., New Holland, at 7 p.m. on Fridays, Sept. 20 and 27; at 2 and 7 p.m. on Saturdays, Sept. 21 and 28; and at 4 p.m. on Sundays, Sept. 22 and 29. First produced in 1879, the maritime musical by Gilbert and Sullivan is an energetic work focused on Frederic, played by Nolen Petosky, a young man who, as a child, was mistakenly apprenticed to a pirate rather than a pilot. The error is the fault of Ruth, Frederic’s hard-of-hearing nursemaid, played by See Pirate Musical pg 4
