Birdsboro Group Holds Activities for Seniors

The Birdsboro

Senior Group at St. Mark’s, launched in June of 2021 at St. Mark’s Lutheran Church in Birdsboro, continues to offer a place where individuals age 55 and over can enjoy activities and a homemade lunch.

The group meets on the first and third Thursdays of the month from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. Gatherings include refreshments and a time for fellowship and bingo followed by a guest speaker and the meal. Activities are free, but donations are accepted for the lunch.

Bingo prizes include paper products, cleaning supplies and other household items, along with

beverages; eggs; and baked goods, including loaves of bread. Attendees also have an opportunity to win these and other items through a random drawing.

“We have bingo from 9 to 11 a.m. and a guest speaker. Then we do lunch,” explained church member Sally Sassaman. “The prizes are anything from food to personal

Rock Band To Conclude Concert in the Park Series

The final performance in this year’s Honey Brook Concerts in the Park series on Sunday, Sept. 7, will feature the band Local Honey. The outdoor concert, to be held in Honey Brook Borough Park, 71 Pequea Ave. (Route 10), will take place from 5 to 7:30 p.m. Admission is free and open to the public, but attendees are asked to bring a nonperishable food item for donation to the Honey Brook Food Pantry (HBFP).

Local Honey is a group of longtime friends who have played in various bands through the years. Concert goers can expect to hear tunes from bands like the Grateful Dead, Allman Brothers Band and Pink Floyd, as well as original material. To learn more about the band and to listen to music samples, visit www.localhoney.live.

Organizers, volunteers, craftsmen and nearly 800 living history interpreters are busy finalizing plans for the 2025 edition of the Hay Creek Festival, which will run from Friday, Sept. 5, through Sunday, Sept. 7, on the grounds of Historic Joanna Furnace, 1250 Furnace Road, Morgantown. The festival will be open each day from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m.

Highlights of the 49th annual event, presented by the Hay Creek Valley Historical Association (HCVHA), will include traditional

According to Jeanne Jenzano, vice president of Honey Brook Borough Council and chair of the Parks and Recreation Committee, this is the first time that the band has played in Honey Brook. She explained that she finds bands to perform in the concert series from local music venues.

“I spend a lot of time listening to live music around the county. If I hear a band that would be fun, I talk to them afterward,” she said. “I don’t like to book a band that I have not seen and heard in person. We want to make sure we are getting quality musicians. Plus I also have to consider the audience. I have to make sure the music fits the audience.”

The concert series debuted in 2010 with one concert by a trio of

Book Bonanza Distributes Funds, Sets Collection Date

Berks Book Bonanza organizers have calculated the totals from the latest sale and plan to distribute $40,000 to each of the two sponsoring organizations following the highly successful fundraiser in July.

The July sale was the first five-day operation held at Book Bonanza’s new home in the County of Berks South Campus building. Book Bonanza vice president Judy Ellsworth noted that attendees on opening day lined up on the sidewalk down the length of the building.

Ellswoth reported that shopper excitement continued over the other sale days with thousands turning out to secure bargains and support two local nonprofits.

The Friends of Berks County Public Libraries and local branch of the American Association of University Women (AAUW) have assisted with the sale for decades, and each receive an equal distribution of money raised from the annual sale.

Each organization, in turn, distributes those funds back into the community through direct aid to public libraries in Berks County and

local musicians, but it grew to include four concerts held once a month during the summer. Jenzano said that the concerts attract between 75 and 100 people, some of whom do not live in the borough. “It brings people from outside the area to see Honey Brook. They get here and tell me it’s a cool town and a nice park,” she stated. “It puts a positive spin on Honey Brook.”

While food is not sold at the venue, people may bring their own picnic

dinners or visit various eateries located around the park. Picnic tables are set up inside one of the park’s pavilions.

The park also has a playground for children. “People can watch their kids on the playground and listen to the music or they can be on the playground with the kids and still hear the music,” Jenzano noted.

Following the concert, Jenzano delivers all of the food donations directly to the pantry. “There is a bin

Applications Sought for Leadership Program

Leadership Chester County (LCC) is accepting applications for its 202526 program. This year marks the 25th anniversary of the program.

LCC’s program will run from October to May, meeting one full weekday each month. Participants will engage in interactive sessions led by speakers, community leaders, and subject matter experts, covering topics such as community development, collaboration, advocacy, and effective governance. LCC welcomes individuals at every stage of life and career, including seasoned professionals, retirees, and those just beginning their careers.

Participants represent a wide range of sectors, including business, government, education, and

nonprofits. The program is designed for those who are curious about how the community works and are motivated to make a meaningful impact. Administered and facilitated by Chester County United Way and in partnership with West Chester University and the Chester County Chamber of Business & Industry, Leadership Chester County has become a trusted resource for building civic leadership. With the support of partners and sponsors, the program has developed a network of alumni who bring their skills and passion to nonprofit boards and community initiatives throughout the region. Applications are open through Friday, Sept. 12. To learn more or apply, visit www.leadership chestercounty.org or contact Kelly Cockshaw at 610-429-9400.

early American crafts, a contemporary craft market, living history presentations and interpretations, vintage Industrial Revolution-era working equipment, threshing demonstrations, a working sawmill, children’s hands-on activities, Civil War and World War II encampments, antique vehicles, a display of steam engines and tractors, live music and homemade food.

New this year will be a performance by magician David Darwin on Sept. 5 and Saturday, Sept. 6. Darwin, a past contestant on NBC’s “America’s Got Talent,” will perform everything from death-defying stunts to juggling and comedy. Also new this year will be featured musical group Valley Vision from Reading who will perform Americana and rock music on Sept. 7. Marion Gehman & Friends will present a ventriloquist act on Sept. 5, and the Hay Creek Gold Band will perform folk and bluegrass music at the festival all three days.

The Civil War encampment will demonstrate how soldiers lived and trained in the mid-19th century. This year, re-enactors from the Army Rappahannock Re-enactors Association and the 22nd North Carolina Infantry Unit will be at the festival on Sept. 6 and 7. “The Confederate company is bringing their cannon, which is a crowd favorite. People enjoy seeing the cannon-firing demonstrations,” noted Mark Zerr, HCVHA executive director.

Also new this year will be a special exhibit on one-room schoolhouses by Hay Creek’s Tri-County Heritage Library. A display of an interior oneroom school will be set up at the mule stable, plus there will be information and photos of old schools.

“Basically, every small town had their own little school. There was one at Joanna Furnace, one in Scarlets Mill, Giegertown, Cold Run Road and the Harmony School. And the kids walked to school,” noted Zerr. “(The display) will be about the local community schools, what they learned and what they did if the (kids misbehaved) and the books the teachers would have used. We even have some local paperwork, like attendance records from one-room schoolhouses. We are focusing on the schools that were directly around the furnace.”

Visitors to the Joanna Furnace site may also notice some improvements to several of the site’s buildings, where the bricks were pointed with new mortar. “We did a lime-mortar, which is what the buildings originally had. The (buildings) look very fresh and almost new,” Zerr noted. “We did some other spruce-ups and got a new split-rail fence.”

The festival will also feature open-fire cooking, bake oven demonstrations and butter and sauerkraut making. Samples of these early American foods will be available.

There will be children’s activities throughout the weekend, including archaeological digs, candle and paper making, early American games, Civil War marching and drilling. Children can pick up their “chores list” at the festival gate, which will feature all the hands-on activities at the event. Upon completion of a variety of tasks, children will be rewarded with a free wagon ride.

Food will be prepared and served by HCVHA volunteers and community nonprofit organizations. The menu will include chicken pot pie, hamburgers, hot dogs, pulled pork barbecue, turkey and roast beef sandwiches, sausage sandwiches Mabel’s openfire cooked soups, hand-dipped ice cream, funnel cakes, french fries and fresh baked goods. Also featured will be homemade corn pie and stuffed

bell pepper casseroles.

Freshly pressed apple cider will be made daily in the Joanna Furnace cider mill. Many of the festival foods are also available to purchase to take home. Craft beer and honey wine will also be for sale.

Joanna Furnace is located 3 miles north of Morgantown on Route 10. Parking on Sept. 5 will be on the festival grounds. Free continuously running shuttle buses will be available on Sept. 6 and 7 only at Weaver’s Orchard, 40 Fruit Lane, Morgantown. An admission fee will be charged. There will be separate prices for adults and children ages 6 to 12. Children age 5 and younger will be admitted for free. For more information, visit www.haycreek.org.

items - everything they would need.”

Programs vary each session. Magician Chris Ivey performed on Aug. 7, and the meeting on Aug. 21 included a talk titled “Senior Scam Alerts.” The meal that day included homemade sloppy joe sandwiches prepared by church volunteers Kim Arantowicz, Gayle Kramer and Jim Reeser.

“The tomatoes came from the neighbor’s garden that I helped puree. So, it truly is a community meal,” said Kramer.

It is not necessary to live in Birdsboro or attend St. Mark’s to participate. “It’s a walk-in and open to the public,” Sassaman said, noting that the gatherings attract more than 50 people during each session.

She noted that the club formed when Berks Encore moved its senior center out of the Birdsboro

Community Memorial Center. After much planning, it was decided that the church should offer a club for seniors twice a month at the church.

“It got started because they closed down the senior center and Marsha (Springel, church operations coordinator) wanted to do something for people here that came to Birdsboro,” Sassaman said. The next get-together of the the Birdsboro Senior Group at St. Mark’s will be on Thursday, Sept. 4. There will be bingo and a speaker. Transportation is available. For more information or to request transportation, call the church office at 610-582-8167.
