HPF Readies for Forge Day, Fall Plant Swap

oole Forge Day, featuring hayrides, a silent auction, music, historical demonstrations, arts and crafts vendors and children’s activities, will take place on Saturday, Sept. 12, from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. at Historic Poole Forge, 1940 Main St., Narvon (Churchtown). Admission is free and open to the public. “The idea is there’s something for everybody at all times during the day,” said Dawn Rise Ekdahl, Poole Forge executive director. “We really design the event to be very kid friendly.” The event will feature activities for visitors of all ages. For children, Children’s activities will include barrel train rides. there will be a craft area where they candy, and there will be a pony cart show by Raven Ridge Wildlife will be able to take part in Arie’s and pet parade. Gibraltar Fire Company, located at 3351 Main St., Birdsboro, will host a free community event on Saturday, Aug. 29, from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. The highlight of the day will be the touch-a-truck event, which will feature fire apparatus from both Gibraltar Fire Company and Geigertown Fire Company. The season of celebration of America’s 250th birthday is not over. Birdsboro will host a “Big 250 Bash” on Saturday, Sept. 5, from 3 to 8 p.m. at Main Bird Park, 226 N. Water St., Birdsboro. The event will feature local vendors and a farmers market, a petting zoo, various food trucks, Birdsboro history tours, live music and fireworks. The event has been in the works since the spring. “We wanted to have our own little celebration,” said event organizer Brandi Brennan. “We didn’t want to have it during the summer because a lot of people are at the beach and a lot of bigger cities were having theirs on the Fourth of July, so we thought Labor Day weekend would be a good time to have it, where everyone’s home in sort of the back-to-school season.” In the morning, before the bash, there will be a parade in town. Following the traditional route of the borough’s Halloween parade route with a slight detour at the end, the parade will include various groups in the community, including the women’s club, the Rotary Club and the Daniel Boone football team. Local police and fire departments will also be involved. S ticking with emergenc y responders, members of the police department will be sitting in a dunk tank for members of the community to sink them. Birdsboro mayor Anthony Tucci will also take a turn in the tank, along with some members of borough council. During the event proper, live music will be played by Berksbased outfit Dial Up Daze, as well as acoustic duo Old Fangled.

SALT Performing Arts, 1645 Ar t School Road, Chester Springs, will present Rodgers & Hammerstein’s “Carousel” from Friday, Sept. 4, to Sunday, Sept. 20. Performances will take place on Fridays at 7 p.m., Saturdays at 2 and 7 p.m., and Sundays at 2 p.m. The Sept. 4 opening night will include champagne, and dressy attire is requested. Set in a New England seaside town, the musical follows charismatic carnival barker Billy Bigelow and mill worker Julie Jordan as they navigate love, hardship, and second chances. The show features songs such as “If I Loved You” and “You’ll Never Walk Alone.” The cast includes Natalie Schaffer as Julie Jordan, Kai Kasiguran as Billy Bigelow, Megan Lynn Schmid as Carrie Pipperidge, Maggie Riker as Nettie Fowler, Daniel Williams as Enoch Snow, Anthony Foley as Jigger Cragin, Lauren Rozensky Flanagan as Mrs. Mullin, Eloise McComas as the Starkeeper, Sophia Moran as Louise Bigelow, Gavin Vermeulen as Enoch Snow Jr., Gabriel Wochtl as the Carousel Boy, and R o n H a m a d a y a s M r. Local youths recently showcased their livestock knowledge and showmanship during the annual Chester County 4-H goat, dairy goat, and sheep shows. These activities took place during the 2026 Chester County 4-H Fair, held from Aug. 3 to 8 at the Romano 4-H Center in West Brandywine Township. The annual Market Goat Round-Up was held on Aug. 3. Throughout the 2025-26 project year, members had dedicated countless hours
to raising, feeding, training, and caring for their market goats and breeding does. Prior to the show, exhibitors carefully washed, clipped, and prepared their animals to present them at their best. In addition to competing in the show ring, members participated in the annual Goat Skill-A-Thon, demonstrating their knowledge of goat nutrition, health, equipment, management practices, and the meat goat industry. A highlight of the day will be a turtle race at 3:15 p.m. Visitors who “purchase” green rubber turtles that will float down Conestoga Creek will be in the running for monetary prizes. The first turtle across the finish line will get the grand prize. There will also be smaller prizes for the other top finishers. “We don’t schedule any other activities at that point, so ever ything is focused on the turtle race,” Ekdahl said. “We usually bring in either a tree service or someone that has a crane. The barrel’s high, the cord gets pulled and the turtles dump down into the creek. Then everybody runs along the creek, following the turtles to the finish line.” Along with the extensive silent auction, the 18th-century Welsh iron master’s mansion will be open for guided tours on the day of the event. The winner of the scavenger hunt will receive a cash prize. “Our borough council sort of wanted us to pursue this and put it together to get a little bit more of a greater sense of community in our town,” Brennan said of the history tour. “We have a pretty big divide between retired families and the newer, younger families sort of coming in. So we just wanted to sort of introduce some of the new families to the history of Birdsboro and just show them a little bit of how long it’s been here and what it’s contributed to.”

Ella Wingrave was the champion showman and fitter in the junior division, and Hope Hawkins and Sophia Beitler received blue merit ribbons for showmanship and fitting. Evelyn Bove was recognized as the top showman of the day, and her doe, Aristos Harvest Farm Sage, was selected as the best goat in the show. The Sheep Round-Up was held on Aug. 4. Youths showcased their knowledge, showmanship, and quality of breeding and market sheep before judge Caleb Wright. The event began with the senior showmanship competition, where exhibitors were evaluated on their knowledge of sheep production, handling skills, and ability to present their animals. Sawyer Lease was selected as champion senior showman, and Kendra Beiler earned reserve champion senior showman honors. So we just wanted to sort of introduce some of the new families to the history of Birdsboro and just show them a little bit of how long it’s been here and what it’s contributed to.”

Evelyn Bove was recognized as the top showman of the day, and her doe, Aristos Harvest Farm Sage, was selected as the best goat in the show. The Sheep Round-Up was held on Aug. 4. Youths showcased their knowledge, showmanship, and quality of breeding and market sheep before judge Caleb Wright. The event began with the senior showmanship competition, where exhibitors were evaluated on their knowledge of sheep production, handling skills, and ability to present their animals. Sawyer Lease was selected as champion senior showman, and Kendra Beiler earned reserve champion senior showman honors.
