5K MUD RUN
OneRunTogether will hold its eighth annual Hard to the Core 5K Orchard Mud Run at 8:30 a.m. on Saturday, Sept. 7, at Weaver’s Orchard, 40 Fruit Lane, Morgantown. Participants will run through apple and peach trees, a vineyard, a Christmas tree farm, mudholes, hay bale obstacles, and more. The course will end at the pond with a live rock band and an apple pancake breakfast. OneRunTogether holds races that financially and spiritually benefit local cancer patients in need. Members of Trail Life Troop 1:9 will hold a car wash on Saturday, Aug. 31, from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. at the Sonic Drive-In, 850 Crossings Blvd., Elverson. Cars will be washed for a donation to the troop. The troop is an outdoor character and leadership development organization for boys ages 5 to 17 that meets at Forks of the Brandywine Church in Glenmoore on the first and third Mondays of each month. Lighthouse Assembly of God is sponsoring Light the Block on Saturday, Sept. 7, from 4 to 8 p.m. in New Holland Park on the 400 block of Jackson Street. This free event will feature grocery box giveaways, a free dinner, children’s “swag bags” and entertainment, live music, and Bible preaching. The point of the event is to show the love of Jesus. StarFest To Highlight The Night Sky By Francine Fulton
The Chesmont Astronomical Society (CAS) will present StarFest 2019 on Saturday, Aug. 24, from 5:30 to 11:30 p.m. at Hopewell Furnace National Historic Site, located at 2 Mark Bird Lane, Elverson. During the 20th annual event, the community will be able to view the night sky through powerful telescopes owned by CAS members. Also featured will be educational activities for children, along with guest speakers and door prizes. Admission and parking will be free, but donations will be accepted. StarFest will open at 5:30 p.m. for solar observing and telescope setup. A Kids’ Corner featuring educational activities will be available from 6 to 7 p.m. Opening remarks will be offered by Josh Wright, president of CAS, at 7 p.m. He will talk about the evening’s events, See StarFest pg 7

Military History Museum Marks Anniversary By Francine Fulton
A talk on radio astronomy, which is the study of celestial objects that give off radio waves, will be presented during StarFest 2019 by James Aguirre, an associate professor of physics and astronomy at the University of Pennsylvania. His talk will begin at 8:15 p.m. at StarFest, which is scheduled to be held on Saturday, Aug. 24, at Hopewell Furnace National Historic Site in Elverson. “People think of radio as something you hear, but radio waves travel to us from objects in space and we can learn things (from them),” Aguirre explained. “Radio waves coming from space (highlight) different kinds of objects. The Berks Military History Museum, which features displays of weapons, flags and military equipment, as well as dog tags, uniforms and medals worn by local veterans, recently celebrated its two-year anniversary. The building, located at 198 E. Wyomissing Ave. in Mohnton, next to Mohnton Park, opened in August 2017. The museum’s motto is “Remembering Those Who Served.” As part of the anniversary celebration, Berks County veterans from all periods and branches of service were invited to visit the museum. Among the guests were approximately 10 World War II veterans. See Museum pg 4
State Rep. Mark Gillen (right), Berks Military History Museum president, recently hosted the museum’s second anniversary celebration. Among the special guests in attendance was 102-year-old World War II veteran William Moore, who served in the Army 38th Combat Engineers Regiment.
