BY FRANCINE FULTON After a two-year absence because of the pandemic, the Shepherd’s Kitchen meal ministry is once again being offered at Honey Brook Presbyterian Church. As part of the program, free dinners are served at the church on the first Thursday of each month from 4:30 to 6:30 p.m. The meal includes an entree, salad, side dishes, dessert and“Ourbeverages.lastmeal was in March of 2020, and we were closed for (more than) two years. (Past attendees) were asking for us to open again,” said volunteer Lynn Klumpp, noting that the first meal back was held in July, and it featured spaghetti with bread and salad. August’s meal had a summer picnic theme with hamburgers and hot dogs and all the fixings along with freshThosewatermelon.whoattend the meal are also offered free nonperishable food items and baked goods. “Giant gives us desserts and bread and we use them for our meals, and we give out (the rest),” Klumpp said. The canned goods are provided by the Chester County Food Bank (CCFB). No proof of residence or income is required to take part in the meal, which is open to people of all ages, including seniors, young families with children and individuals who don’t want to dine alone. Those who attend the meal on a regular basis include residents of St. Mary of Providence, Tel Hai Retirement Community and Honeybrook Gardens Apartments. “We do a have a lot of seniors that look forward to coming out. They are on a fixed budget and they (can be) lonely,” said Klumpp. “We had a group of ladies from Honey Brook Gardens (attend July’s meal), and they sent us a thank-you note thanking us for opening back up again.” “Everyone enjoys the fellowship,” added volunteer Arleen Zomer. “It is good for people to get out and enjoy a time of fellowship. A lot of older folks can’t afford to go out to eat.” All food is prepared by volunteers. While most volunteers at the meal are congregation members, people from the community also assist with the ministry. “We want to help the community any way we can,” Klumpp added. The next scheduled meal will take place on Thursday, Sept. 1. The menu will include barbecue sandwiches, baked beans and macaroni andHoneycheese. Brook Presbyterian Church is located at 4331 Horseshoe Pike (Route 322), Honey Brook. For more information, contact the church at 610-273-2848 or visit www.honeybrookpres.org. More information is also available by searching for “Honey Brook Presbyterian Church” on Facebook. BY ANN MEAD ASH Lori Bennett, a member of the board of the New Holland Re-Uzit Shop, shared that one of the main requirements the organization is looking for in new board members is a “Christian heart focused on wanting to serve.” Bennett knows that such people are present in the local area. “This community has so many wonderful people who have a passion for serving and have some really neat gifts the board can use,” she said. The current board of six has made it a mission to expand membership to nine or more. “We want to reach out … beyond our circles and find some people who have the potential to be really good board members,” Bennett said. Pennsylvania Family Support Alliance (PFSA) launched its Family Digital Wellness Hub, an effort designed to provide parents, caregivers, and communities with the tools and resources they need to keep Pennsylvania’s children safe. With schools across the commonwealth adjourning for summer recess, PFSA is urging parents and caregivers to be proactive and get educated on the dangers that social media and digital devices can pose to their children, given that usage will only increase now that many will have unlimited free time. The Family Digital Wellness Hub is a free resource that is designed to provide educational information for parents, caregivers, and communities to help them foster a safe and healthy relationship between their children and digital technologies. As part of the organization’s Hub, PFSA is providing a free practical guide that contains easily digestible information on social media, digital use, and how to prevent children from being harmed in virtual environments. The guide also includes a detailed FAQ section, tips, interactive quizzes, fact sheets, and action steps that can be tailored by families as they become more proactive in reducing digital threats and preventing the potential abuse of children. Finally, PFSA recommends that parents, caregivers, and communities focus on being digitally diligent and adhere to the several recommendations. Parents should pause to become aware of the current digital dangers that threaten children and families, prioritize their family’s

After 29 relocating to farm Among the qualities the organization would like to see in potential board members are familiarity with areas of property management, real estate, and construction; human resources, as about half of the staff of 18 is full time; accounting and finance; and legal issues. Bennett noted that skills in those areas could help the organization move forward with plans for the future. “We are looking to do some exciting things,” said Bennett. Currently, the board meets every other month, normally in the evening, but individual committees often get together in between those meetings. “It’s not a huge time commitment, but (a minimum amount of) time will be necessary,” Bennett noted. The New Holland Re-Uzit Shop has been a fixture in the area for decades, having opened in 1976. Originally, the shop was located near the intersection of Main Street and Railroad Avenue, but 12 years ago, it was moved to the former Good’s Furniture location at 707 W. Main St. “August 2 was our 46th anniversary,” said Sherry Duda, who shares general manager duties with Andy Clayton. The Re-Uzit Shop mission reads, “To serve in the name of Christ by reselling primarily donated items to benefit people locally and globally.” Most of the funds raised by Re-Uzit are given to Mennonite Central Committee to aid projects around the world, most recently in Ukraine. A percentage also goes to local ministries, including CrossNet, New Holland Early Learning Center, and Lighthouse Vocational Services. Funds are also donated to the New Holland Police Department, New Holland Ambulance, and Garden Spot Fire Rescue.
